DIY diagnostics and replacement of the speed sensor on a Priora

Determining driving speed is required not only to inform the driver about compliance or violation of traffic rules. The speed sensor of a Priora car with an injection engine is a necessary link in the vehicle’s fuel system control system. Externally, it differs little from other similar devices.

What we know about the operation of this sensor:

  • records the speed of movement;
  • with its help, the mileage of the car is recorded;
  • transmits information to the engine electronic control unit (ECU).

About the sensor

In Lada Priora DS cars, it performs a large number of different actions. It maintains higher speeds when driving at neutral speed, reads information about the speed of the car by reading them from the wheels, and also, according to its readings, the fuel-air mixture is regulated and the power steering is turned off when a certain speed is reached.

The sensor is made of oil-resistant plastic of a cylindrical shape. Inside the sensor there is a sensitive element that reads readings from the gearbox gears and converts them into km/h.

The DS is located in the rear part of the gearbox housing near the exhaust manifold and is secured with a “10” nut through a stud.

How to check this unit if the symptoms overlap with other fuel system failures

First, you need to know where the speed sensor is located on the Priora. It is located on the top of the manual transmission. Moreover, you can get to it without an inspection hole or a lift.

To accurately check the sensor, you need a car scanner or at least a primitive error reader like ELM-327.

First, perform an external inspection:

  • the wiring should not have visible kinks or breaks;
  • the connector contacts are intact, without traces of corrosion;
  • the sensor body is without cracks (it is made of plastic, so damage will be immediately obvious);
  • There are no chips or dirt on the sensitive element.

On the 16 valve LADA Priora engine, the location is not the best; the sensor is influenced by external factors: temperature, humidity, the action of road reagents. If any of the signs are found, except for mechanical damage, then the problem can be eliminated on your own. The wiring is restored, the contacts are cleaned, and the sensor can be cleaned of dirt. If this does not help, then replacement is required.

Purchasing on the basis of “the same thing that came from the factory” is not always justified.

Priora was produced quite a long time ago and has already been removed from the assembly line. Therefore, brand support for spare parts for this model is not at a high level. However, there are many authorized LADA manufacturers that offer high quality components.

Information: After installing a new speed sensor, no adaptation is required. The device is calibrated instantly after the start of movement.

Basic speed sensor faults

  • No readings on the speedometer, or incorrect distorted readings;
  • An error appears on the instrument panel 0500 and 0501;
  • Increased fuel consumption;
  • Unstable operation of the EUR or its complete shutdown;
  • There are no increased speeds when driving in neutral gear;

If the speed sensor fails, a series of malfunctions will occur in the car.

Symptoms of a problem

Of course, there are obvious symptoms:

  • the speedometer does not work;
  • The daily and main odometer readings do not change;
  • reading error 0500 or 0501 by an on-board computer or OBD scanner.

In addition, the power plant will operate intermittently, especially at idle. The reason is precisely that when receiving information from the throttle position sensor, the ECU cannot synchronize it with data from the speed sensor. A system error occurs, which, among other things, leads to excessive fuel consumption. Neither the on-board computer nor the 16 valves of a modern engine will help.

Another obvious sign: if the speed sensor is faulty, traction disappears during uniform movement.

When to replace?

Replacement must be made only when the above-described malfunctions occur, but before starting work, you must check the sensor itself for contamination and integrity.

The check should begin with the connector. You need to remove the chip from the sensor and check it for contamination and integrity of the contacts, both on the chip itself and on the sensor. All contacts must be clean and intact without traces of oil, dirt or rust.

DSA with broken and dirty contacts

If, upon inspection of the connector, the problems described above are discovered, it must be replaced. Connectors are sold in auto parts stores for domestic cars.

Next, you need to remove the sensor itself; to do this, use a ratchet and a 10-point socket, unscrew the nut and remove the sensor. The plastic housing of the sensor should be free of cracks, chips, dents and metal shavings. If necessary, we clean it and install it in place.

Metal shavings interfering with the operation of the diesel engine

Quite often it happens that chips formed during the friction of gears in the gearbox stick to the DS and it, in turn, begins to display incorrect readings.

If all these manipulations with the DSA did not help, then it needs to be replaced.

Checking the induction DS

The signal that comes from the rotation of the wheels essentially resembles the oscillation of a wave impulse. Therefore, the voltage changes depending on the rotation speed. Everything happens in the same way as with the crankshaft angle sensor.

Even more useful tips in a convenient format

If the sensor is working properly and the gear is not leaking, then there may be no power to the sensor or there is a break/short somewhere in its wiring. In addition, the ECU and ABS are involved in the readings on the tidy. The wire from the ECU to the instrument panel or from the ABS may have been lost (you should call the wire from the speedometer to the ABS block). It is possible that the device is faulty.

Good day everyone, I have such a problem that the speedometer and odometer do not work. My car is a Hyundai Santa Fe 2 2007. I checked the speed sensor drive gear, everything is ok, I don’t know how to ring or check the sensor itself. The workers checked the inductive sensors on the box by eliminating everything, the check light came on, I don’t know what else could be the reason, since you drive with a scanner, the speed shows “0” on the speedometer, maybe someone has someone who can tell me.

Guys, good afternoon everyone! Please tell me! I have a Lada 14 and just recently the speed began to fluctuate, it almost stalls, it does not work evenly. Diagnostics showed a camshaft sensor, they replaced the sensor with a new one, but there was no result. By the way, the speedometer and tachometer do not work. What could be the reason?

Thank you, detailed article! And it will be even more clear how to check the speed sensor if you watch the video of the HF channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiDmZLUuTMI

Thank you for a very clear and accessible description of checking the speed sensor yourself. Thanks to the instructions, I was able to do it myself. It turned out to be really dying.

Good afternoon Subaru Outback has a 2007. The check lights up. The error code reveals P0500 – circuit speed sensor. But there are three sensors there. The question is how to determine which of them does not work? Or how else can I check?

The reason is not always only in the speed sensor (this behavior can also appear when the contacts in its connector oxidize), although if it starts to lie, then this is precisely the problem. Perhaps the problem lies in the device itself, then you have to disassemble it and check the arrow drive mechanism. On cars with a cable drive, such a malfunction is often hidden either in old oil on the gears, or in a worn square at the end of the cable, or the lubrication of that same cable helps.

Volkswagen Multivan T5 2012 car. Sometimes when accelerating the speed needle shakes/jerks. I looked for this sensor in ETKA and couldn’t find it. What could be the problem?

My Galant 8 (shark) has stopped showing the speedometer and the revs without load are developing well, only if you stick D in, the rev shows 2500 and there is no 3rd and 4th respectively. Automatic transmission box. Could it be the speed sensor? By the way, the speed sensor is some kind of magnetic.. I’m looking forward to the answer from the experts!

On my Toyota, the signal from the sensor first goes to the instrument panel, and from it to the signal converter for the ECU, and then to the ECU.

Useful article, but they lied a little at the beginning. It is written that the speed sensor sends its signals to another sensor - this is not true. All sensors first send their signals to the ECU, and it will decide what to do next based on all the data received from other sensors.

What numbers does the multimeter show when testing both sensors? It is quite possible that the sensor is not the right one. When purchasing a new sensor you really need to look at the part number! Despite their external similarity, Kalinovsky and Priorovsky sensors are not interchangeable. Since 2011, it seems that Prior sensors have been installed. And by the way, it is possible that the magnetized disk inside the box has come off its mounts (such cases also happen).

Kalina car is a 11 year old, the speedometer shows an underestimated speed. I can't find the reason. I removed the old speed sensor and replaced it with a new one, same picture. The gearbox is like the Priora. Maybe I installed the wrong sensor? The instruments are working, the arrows are all moving, I checked them. Tell me what to do, what to watch?

very interesting case! Have you asked our experts this question in the Q&A section? If not, then copy it and put it in that section!

Replacement at a car service

For dismantling and installing a diesel engine at a service station, you will be charged from 200 to 300 rubles. The cost of the device itself in a spare parts store ranges from 300 to 400 rubles, depending on the manufacturer. When purchasing, pay attention to the article number.

Speed sensor part number

There is nothing complicated in the process of replacing the DSA; the work from start to finish will not take even 20 minutes. All work on changing the DS can be carried out independently, without overpaying an extra amount.

Control Features

Control is carried out through a lever and a knob for switching between speeds - a rocker with a cover. To prevent accidental engagement and disengagement of gears while driving, a reaction-type traction rod is integrated into the mechanism. At one end it is connected to the engine, and at the other to the base of the switch lever. Some drivers install a short-throw rocker as an upgrade for greater sensitivity. On one side of the rod, a switch is fixed inside, which affects the mechanism; it is a separate unit and is attached to the pallet. There are three axes fixed in the device casing:

  1. The first is used to secure the speed selection and switching switch, as well as two locking brackets.
  2. The second goes through the slots in the brackets and prevents them from turning.
  3. The third secures the reverse gear fork.

Self-replacement of DSA

First, you need to prepare the car: secure it with the handbrake, having previously placed it on a flat surface, remove the negative terminal from the battery, and then begin dismantling the old speed sensor.

We take out the DSA plug and use a ratchet with a head or an open-end wrench set to “10” to unscrew the nut securing the sensor, then remove it.

Installation of the new DS must be done in the reverse order; be careful not to damage the O-ring or lose it, otherwise oil will ooze from under the sensor.

Diagram and pinout of DS Priora

Three wires are connected to the DS Priora plug. One of them is positive 12V, the second or central one is the signal wire that supplies impulses to the control unit, and the third is ground.

The speed sensor power supply circuit is shown in the photo below.

The DS pinout diagram on a Priora may be needed when replacing a plug or checking the incoming power.

Layout and operating principle

The Lada Priora model is equipped with a fully electronic speed calculation system. It consists of the following elements:

  1. Speed sensor (EMF). Its function is to create electrical impulses.
  2. Electrical wiring. Powers the speedometer system with electric current.
  3. Fuse. Protects the system from voltage surges.
  4. On-board computer. Monitors work and analyzes incoming data.
  5. The speedometer itself. Necessary for visual speed control.

There are not many components in the system. The system works as follows:

  1. The speed sensor produces electrical impulses. It is installed on the gearbox housing. On power units with 16 valves, the EMF is located on the side of the expansion tank. The EMF is installed opposite the flywheel. This gear has teeth along its entire diameter. There is only one tooth missing in one place. It is to this place that the magnetic speedometer sensor reacts. During the passage of an empty space, the EMF opens, thereby creating an electrical impulse.
  2. The pulses generated by the opening are sent through wires to the ECU. The computer calculates the speed at which the signals arrive and converts them into an electrical voltage of a certain strength.
  3. Voltage is supplied to the instrument panel, activating the speedometer drive motor.
  4. The electric motor deflects the speedometer needle by a certain degree.

In addition to needle deflection, electrical impulses from the speed sensor are necessary to calculate the fuel supply to the engine. Based on the data received, the on-board computer determines the required amount of combustible mixture and its filling with air. In this way, the required, stable engine speed is maintained for the current speed limit.

The speedometer on the Priora does not work for several reasons. But this is always preceded by the appearance of a number of symptoms of a malfunction. They will be described below.
