Replacing the brake pads of the front wheels of Renault Duster

We carry out the work on a flat area, inspection ditch or overpass.

Attention! The brake pads of the front wheels must be replaced only as a set - all four pads. Replacing the pads of one brake mechanism can lead to the car pulling to the side when braking.

If the fluid level in the hydraulic brake reservoir is at the MAX mark, then before installing new pads, use a syringe or rubber bulb to pump out some of the fluid from the reservoir. This operation must be performed so that when the piston is pressed into the wheel cylinder of the brake mechanism while installing new pads, fluid does not flow out from under the reservoir cap.

Remove the front wheel.

Before installing new pads, it is necessary to move the wheel cylinder piston as much as possible inside the cylinder. To do this, insert a wide-bladed screwdriver through the hole in the caliper between the base of the inner pad and the piston. Leaning a screwdriver on the block...

Front brake pads of the left wheel.

Attention! Before installing new pads, you must pay attention to the markings of the internal pads. They must be installed strictly in the direction of rotation of the wheel. This is indicated by an arrow marked on the base of the inner block. The direction of rotation of the wheel and the direction of the arrow must match.

Install new brake pads into the pad guide and lower the caliper. We wrap the guide pins and install the caps of the guide pin bushings.

We similarly replace the pads on the other side of the car.

After replacing the pads, press the brake pedal several times to set the gaps between the pads and discs. We check the fluid level in the tank and, if necessary, bring it up to normal.

During operation, the surface of the brake disc becomes uneven, as a result of which the contact area of the new, unused pads with the disc decreases. Therefore, during the first 100 km after replacing the pads, until the new pads have broken in, be careful, as the car’s braking distance may increase.

Replacing the brake pads of the front wheels of Renault Duster

Which ones to choose

The brake mechanism can be of various types. Depending on it, Duster brake pads with one number or another are installed, suitable for Duster. There are only two options - for 280 mm discs and 269 mm discs.

You can purchase original spare parts for Duster, or turn to products from such well-known brands as Bosch, Blue Print, Brembo and others. You should not save money when choosing brake pads for Renault Duster, because people’s lives and health depend on them.

Replacement on all-wheel drive

Replacing the rear brake pads of Renault Duster occurs in much the same way as in other options.

Design

  1. Take a TORX-40 wrench and unscrew a couple of screws that secure the drum to the hub, and remove it

  2. Remove and remove the lower and upper springs using pliers and a screwdriver

  3. Disconnect the spring that adjusts the gap
  4. We take pliers and unscrew the spring of the support post and the cup until the tip of the stand and the hole in the cup align

  5. We remove all separated parts

  6. We take out the block

  7. Take a screwdriver and disconnect the parking brake tip from the shoe lever
  8. Disconnect the end of the spring and cable and remove the brake part
  9. Disconnect the spring with the ratchet bar and remove the block
  10. Putting everything back together

Before installing a new part, it is necessary to check the condition of the brake cylinders, then clean the surface from dirt and lubricate the ratchet mechanism.

Replacing pads on a Renault Duster with front-wheel drive has its own characteristics.

  1. They need to be combined, just like in the first option.
  2. Take a screwdriver and remove the hub cap
  3. We unscrew the nut at the hub bearing using a socket
  4. We remove the drum; this must be done together with the bearing.

Next, we carry out all the work, as in the version with all-wheel drive. Finally, secure the drum with a new hub nut.

As mentioned above, SUVs with different drives have different brake parts:

  • All-wheel drive has part number 440607493 R
  • Front-wheel drive number: 7701210109

When changing the pads, the tension springs with catalog number: 7701205518 are also changed.

Possible nuances

Immediately after removing the Duster wheel, it is necessary to move the piston away from the pad. The greater the distance between them, the better. The piston is moved back using a slotted screwdriver. The latter is inserted into the groove of the brake assembly.

You can find two large bolts, at the bottom and at the top. Due to them, the Duster brake assembly is fixed. The bolts are covered with plastic caps. The latter must be carefully dismantled so that further disassembly can begin.

The bolts released from the caps must be unscrewed. This is done using a hex key with the number “7”. In this case, the sequence does not matter. There is only one last step left, and access to the replaced elements will be open.

The spring clip must be removed. You may have to remove the bracket instead. To do this, you need to get one or another element from the so-called “well”. A slotted screwdriver or pliers will help with this.

Now you need to pull the caliper away from the Duster disc. Caution is important here because the brake hose is connected to it. Only the inner pad will come out with the caliper, at least that's how it should be. The external one should remain on the disk.

The space for the new set was freed up, but a lot of dirt and dust could accumulate here. Therefore, first you need to clean it. Installation areas are cleaned using a brush with metal bristles.

You can start installing new brake pads on Renault Duster. It doesn’t matter what to install first, external or internal. The outer pad is placed on the brake disc, on its outer side. The internal one is placed in the caliper. It is necessary to cover the inside of this block.

To complete the replacement of the front pads on Renault Duster, you need to secure the caliper. It is fixed on the disk. All that remains is to put everything back together. It's not difficult, you just need to do everything in reverse order. If you have little experience, then it is better to photograph your every step so as not to confuse or lose sight of anything.

To change the pads on the other front wheel of the Renault Duster, you will need to do the same thing. The entire process may take a little time, but beginners should be prepared for it to take several hours. Of course, if in the future they regularly do this themselves, they will be able to control much faster.

It's time to change your brake pads

First, let's look at the symptoms of abrasion that can be noticed while driving a Duster:

  • Vibration of the brake pedal when decelerating. If the wear is uneven, you may feel a vibration when you apply the brakes hard. It can be felt on the pedals and throughout the body.
  • Low braking efficiency. When the linings become unusable, the braking distance becomes an order of magnitude longer. But it’s not so easy to notice this right away.
  • Changes in the behavior of the brake pedal. If the pedal falls down when decelerating, this can be considered a sign of a breakdown of the vehicle as a whole;
  • Extraneous sounds when pressing the brake. A whistling or squeaking sound is the result of several reasons. Not only wear of the linings, but also general vehicle problems.

It is equally important to regularly monitor your brake fluid levels.

If its level drops too sharply, oil leakage or pad wear may occur. If the tank is intact, then we can directly say that these parts require replacement. This happens because the caliper needs more and more oil in order to remove the working piston to move the valve towards the disc. Therefore, the level will drop below normal.

Removing the brake drum on Renault Duster 4x4

Naturally, you only need to replace the pads as a set - all four pads. Replacing the pads of only one brake mechanism can lead to the car pulling to the side when braking.

Before removing the brake drum, lower the parking cable lever all the way - the car must be released. Remove the rear wheel and securely fix the car. In order to remove the drum, the pads must be brought together. To do this, using a slotted screwdriver, through the threaded hole into which the wheel fastening bolt is screwed, we rotate the ratcheting nut of the mechanism for automatically adjusting the gap between the pads and the drum, thereby reducing the length of the spacer bar.

For clarity, the operation is shown with the Renault Duster drum removed.

We rotate the ratchet nut on the left and right wheels by the teeth from bottom to top.

Then, using a Torx-T40 wrench, unscrew the two screws securing the brake drum to the hub. Remove the brake drum.

Brake pad part number

Components produced by Ferodo are used in the production of Renault Duster vehicles. The type of pads depends on the diameter of the discs used and the working volume of the engine unit.

For cars with a 2-liter gasoline engine and a diesel engine, wheels with a diameter of 280 mm are used, designed to install original upholstery with article number 440603905R (set cost 4.7 thousand rubles). You can use analogs of ATE (code 13046072662, price from 2.3 thousand rubles) or Ferodo (FDB4180, price from 2.1 thousand rubles).

Cars with a 1.6 liter engine are characterized by reduced dynamics, which reduces the load on the brakes. Discs with a diameter of 269 mm are used on cars that require the installation of front pads 410608481R (cost - from 1.6 thousand rubles).

It should be taken into account that in 2012-13. Dusters with a 1.6 engine and an all-wheel drive system were produced, equipped with discs and pads increased to 280 mm with catalog number 440603905R. Before the initial replacement, it is necessary to check the diameter of the discs and the type of pads.

In addition to the original 410608481R, cars can be equipped with ATE products (article 13046027092, price from 1.8 thousand rubles) or Brembo (code P68033, price from 1.6 thousand rubles).

Ferodo supplies pads in branded packaging with the index FDB1617, the cost of one set is 1.5 thousand rubles. When carrying out work, it is necessary to change all 4 gaskets; parts for disks with a diameter of 269 and 280 mm are not interchangeable.

Basic faults

Parts wear out mainly not because of the mileage traveled, but because of unstable factors: driving style, chemical characteristics of the brakes themselves, weather conditions, compatibility of the part material with the disc material, etc. Distance traveled.

It is these parts that are responsible for the length of the braking path and for safety in general. They need to be changed if the following faults are found:

  • when braking and cornering, a noise, creaking, creaking is heard, as if the wheel was rubbing against something;
  • damage visible from the outside: scratches, dents, abrasions;
  • drums or discs are damaged;
  • to stop the car, you need to press the brake pedal harder than usual while it vibrates;
  • if the car is equipped with a wear sensor for electrical parts, it will emit a sound signal when braking and a mark will appear on the panel;
  • when driving, the steering wheel “does not obey”, the front or rear of the car moves away from the road in any direction;
  • skidding easily occurs on slippery roads.

You won’t be able to save money on brake repairs, so it’s better to purchase high-quality factory options or analogues that match the car model.
