Where is the air filter located?
In the Ford Fusion, the device, which is supposed to filter the air entering the internal combustion engine cylinders, is located in a special plastic housing, which is located in the engine compartment. You will see this container next to the cylinder block. The filter element itself consists of a plastic base and paper that performs the cleaning function. The device is sealed with polymer rings, which ensures a tight fit to the walls. The air that passes through the filter device is cleaned of contaminants and dust particles. Thanks to this, dirt does not enter the power unit and does not interfere with its operation.

How often should it be changed?
During operation, the filter device begins to become clogged and is no longer able to pass the required volume of air. Because of this, oxygen starvation occurs in the machine engine. Such problems lead to serious consequences. The power unit begins to lose power, the car becomes less playful and dynamic. The need for replacement can be indicated by the Check Engine indicator on the dashboard, made in the form of an engine. But the icon does not always appear, so first of all you need to monitor the operating condition of the engine. It is recommended to replace the air filter every year after 10-15 thousand kilometers. If you actively use the machine throughout the year, then the filter element is changed twice - in spring and autumn. The device must be replaced earlier if condensation accumulates inside the housing due to temperature changes.
Need for replacement
Signs of the need for replacement are visible to the driver with the naked eye. First of all this:
- Increased vehicle fuel consumption.
- Increased CO 2 level in the engine system.
- Visible contamination of the filter upon direct inspection.
- Reduced vehicle power.
How often should you change your air filter? Experienced specialists recommend carefully approaching not only the selection of the required filter element, but also the frequency of its replacement. First of all, it is worth remembering that every 10 - 15 thousand kilometers lead to contamination of the air filter system. This negatively affects, first of all, the overall performance of the car in city driving conditions. If the car is operated in extreme and difficult driving conditions, the air filter must be changed twice as often.

Selecting a filter
To replace the air filter in a Ford Fusion, the manufacturer recommends using only original devices, part numbers: 1729857, 1338536.
According to the technical regulations, the installation of similar devices is allowed:
- Blue Print AMD, item 52247;
- Alco MD-8020;
- Bosch, article number 1457433593;
- Mann S.
Our compatriots trust the last two analogues, since the products of these brands have proven themselves to be positive. When purchasing, you may be offered an Alco MS 6259 filter. It is not recommended to buy such a product, since it is thicker and will not fit into the seat.

Thanks to the air filter, the air from which the fuel-air mixture is prepared in the engine does not contain dust particles. Foreign particles entering the engine significantly increase the load on it, thereby bringing its overhaul closer.

Signs that it's time to change the filter:
- the car doesn't pick up speed well
- The engine periodically begins to “chop”
- the volume of fuel used increases
- in particularly advanced cases, the “check” warning signal may light up.
Since the price of an air filter is not high. We recommend regularly replacing this “consumable”. This will definitely cost less than eliminating the consequences of your forgetfulness.
Tools required for replacement: 10 socket, 25 torx (wrench or socket).
Procedure:
1) The air filter in the Ford Fusion is located in the decorative cover covering the engine. And in order to be able to do this, you need to remove this cover. To do this, you need to unscrew the bolts holding it and loosen the clamps holding the pipes.
2) Disconnect the air pipes from the cover.
3) Disconnect the breather located under the cover.
4) Carefully remove the engine cover. Try to do this evenly, as there is a possibility of breaking the clips holding the lid.
5) Transfer the lid and then turn it over. Unscrew the fastening bolts. There are 10 of them in total. Use tools prepared in advance.
6) After removing the bottom cover. Remove the used filter. Thoroughly blow out the housing in which the filter is located with a compressor.
Attention There is a crater gas filter next to the air filter. The main task of which is to prevent oil drops, oil evaporation and other contaminants from entering the pan. The crater gas filter is a piece of special foam rubber; some “experts” recommend replacing it with an ordinary sponge, but this is not true! Since such a “homemade product” will clog very quickly, which in turn will affect the ride quality. The best option is to purchase an original filter or an analogue
7) Install a new filter. Reassemble the cover and then install it in the reverse order of these instructions.
Replacing the air filter is a rather responsible process. Many car enthusiasts are concerned about the question of whether it is possible to replace the air filter on a Ford Fusion 1.8 with their own hands. Having understood this topic and armed with a simple algorithm of actions, it is possible to carry out this procedure quite easily and simply.
Replacing the filter yourself
You can change the device yourself; this is one of the simplest car repair tasks.
Tools and materials
Before you begin the changeover process, prepare everything you may need:
- filter device;
- a Phillips head screwdriver;
- set of wrenches;
- star key 25;
- pliers;
- rags.
If possible, prepare a compressor to blow air through the system.

Stages of work
The following instructions will help you remove and replace the part:
- Turn off the engine. Wait until it cools down and open the hood.
- Two corrugated hoses are connected to the filter housing, through which air flow is supplied to the cleaning system. The pipes are disconnected. It is also necessary to dismantle the clamp securing the hose, which comes from the line located on the body of the device.
- Move the disconnected pipe to the side. Visually assess the condition of the fixing clamps. If these elements are damaged or defective, they must be replaced.
- Disconnect the crankcase ventilation pipe.
- To dismantle the case, you need to unscrew two 10mm screws located in the front part. Then grab the plastic container by the back part that is closest to the windshield and pull it up. There are two lugs on the body, they contain pins that secure it. Dismantling requires effort. If it doesn't work, try removing the left side first and then the right.
- After removing the container from its installation location, turn the case over and unscrew the ten screws securing its cover. If you have a screwdriver, this will speed up the procedure.
- When the cover is removed, the filter device is removed from its seat. Some car owners blow out the part if there is no serious contamination on it. We recommend doing this if there is not enough dirt. When paper cassettes become covered with a layer of dust and become heavily soiled, the device must be replaced.
- Before installation, wash the inside of the plastic housing. Dry the container and wipe with a rag. Install the new part into the housing and secure it. The crankcase gas filter element is also located here; it is designed to clean and collect oil fumes and other types of contaminants that enter here from the power unit sump. This filter is made in the form of a small sponge. The seat must be cleaned using a special product. If you do not have the original filter, you can install a simple dishwashing sponge instead. Only first it should be cut in accordance with the dimensions of the installation site.
- The assembly procedure is carried out in reverse order. You need to replace the filter housing cover and screw it in place. The container itself is mounted on guides; to fix it, you need to press on its edges. Tighten the two previously unscrewed screws and connect the corrugated hoses, as well as the crankcase gas system pipe. Secure the clamp with pliers; if the part is damaged, it must be replaced.
1. Unscrew the bolts and disconnect the corrugated hose clamps
2. Remove the screws on the air filter housing
3. At the top is an air filter device, at the bottom is a crankcase gas filter

How to replace the air filter in a Ford Fusion
In a Ford Fusion, replacing the air filter is quite simple. To do this, the screws on the air ducts are unscrewed and the air ducts are removed. Then the filter housing is removed.
There will be two pins with caps located on the back of the filter housing. You can ignore them and take out the case.
Good filters would be the Austrian KNECHT - LX1268 and the French Lauttrette - ELP9081.
Ford Fusion air filter replacement is carried out as follows. You need to remove the filter fuse, turn on the engine and let it idle until the engine stops on its own.
Next, you need to remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, install the fuel pump fuse, then raise the car.
Next, place a container under the filter, remove the connection of the vapor recovery system pipelines.
Then remove the pipeline and take out the old filter. When installing a new filter, it is advisable to pay attention to installing the filter in exactly the same position as it was before. Connect the ground wire to the negative terminal of the battery. Now you can lower the car.
Main functions of the air filter
The main functions that an automobile air filter performs are cleaning the air that enters the cylinders from dust and dirt. Exhaust gases pass through the filter and soot particles settle on the walls of the matrix.
The car air filter housing is made of plastic, in which a paper filter element is placed. Inside the housing, the filter element is sealed with polymer rings. Therefore, all the air passes through the filter, and then purified, enters the engine.
The filter quickly becomes dirty and this affects the condition of the car. It can also have a detrimental effect on the driver’s health if he does not replace it on time. The vehicle's traction may decrease and fault messages will appear on the dashboard.
In a Ford Fusion, replacing the air filter will ensure effective air purification, which is also important for the driver’s health, because there are too many bacteria in polluted air that cause an allergic reaction. In addition, the car’s ventilation system will be protected from dust and soot particles.
If the car often operates in extreme conditions with increased air pollution, then the filter will need to be replaced more often so that there are no problems with either the engine or the health of the motorist. As a rule, the air filter needs to be replaced once a year.

Filter selection
The types of filters available for the Ford Fusion vehicle are quite varied. How to choose the right air filter? In order to carry out this procedure, you must focus on:
- The quality of the air element.
- Strength of the filter element gasket.
- Originality of the manufacturer.
You should not choose a filter based on the price category of the product. First of all, you should give preference to the original consumables from the manufacturer, which has a logo and all the necessary license marks.
Problems and recommendations
The air filter housing on a Ford Fusion, which will also serve as a decorative trim for the engine, is located directly above the engine in the engine compartment. Due to constant temperature changes, as a rule, this is especially felt in winter, the car engine either heats up or cools down, this causes condensation to appear inside the housing and on the replaceable air filter element.
Installing a zero filter is a good, but very labor-intensive undertaking; due to the lack of free space under the hood of a Ford Fusion, this is practically impossible. Among other things, water will get into it through the radiator grille, and this is fraught with water hammer.
The only way out is to replace the air filter element more often. This way you will avoid unnecessary hassle and costs, ensure engine cleanliness and good health for all people in the cabin.
