Changing spark plugs on a Mitsubishi Lancer 9 with a 1.6 liter engine

Share

The issue of selecting spark-forming elements is of interest not only to beginners. Experienced motorists also do not ignore the spark plugs on the Mitsubishi Lancer 9. If previously one could be content with installing conventional nickel spark plugs, which were sintered after the first unsuccessful refueling, today it is recommended to pay attention to modern options with a longer service life.

Replacing spark plugs for Mitsubishi Lancer 9 (mini photo manual)

The car has already covered quite a lot, 113,000 km, as if there were no complaints about the spark plugs, but I think it’s pointless to wait until they do, and besides, winter is approaching.
I don’t know if the previous owner changed the spark plugs; they were regular NGK ones with 1 electrode, but judging by the fact that the brake pads were original, most likely he didn’t bother replacing the spark plugs either. In any case, I got it with a mileage of 57,000, which means it has already run for 56,000 on these spark plugs. My choice fell on DENSO IRIDIUM POWER IK20, according to reviews from LANCER drivers and all sorts of blah blah blah from the manufacturer, regarding reduced fuel consumption, improved dynamics, etc. .d. Old spark plugs don't look bad at all, except for the burnt ceramic insulator. They got out with a little difficulty, and the thread didn’t boil much.

Along the way, I also replaced the air filter.

And I drew a one-page photo manual, if it’s useful to someone it’s good, if not it’s not bad either, just a little creativity).

Not much advice on replacing spark plugs.

Tools: 1. Spark plug wrench 16, preferably magnetic (the wells are a little deep, wrench length 300 mm, outer diameter of the head should not exceed 21.7 mm.) 2. Wrench 10, better socket, but also socket or open-end. 3. More or less even hands.

We unscrew it with a smooth force, do not rip it off abruptly; if it is too tight, make half a turn back and again to the front. We screw it all the way in with a smooth force until the seal ring expands, as evidenced by a soft click. Of course, ideally you need a torque wrench, but if you have a feeling, you can completely do without it).

When to change and what spark plugs to put on Lancer 9

Of course, you will also need spark plugs. The number of the original spark plugs is MS851358. Among analogues, it is recommended to take NGK BKR6E-11 or Denso K20PR-U11.

On the 9th generation Lancer, the manufacturer gives the frequency of replacing spark plugs at 30 thousand km. (if these are ordinary spark plugs) and 60 thousand km (iridium).

The necessary keys to unscrew the coils and unscrew the spark plugs.

Disconnect the coil power plugs on both sides.

They can be removed without difficulty (press a little from above and pull).

Now take the key to “10” and unscrew the four bolts of the coils.

After which we will proceed to removing the ends of the explosive wires and the coils themselves.

We remove the high-voltage wire of the first spark plug...

We do the same with the third candle well.

Then you can start removing the coils

After you have pulled out the coils and spark plug tips, you can start replacing the spark plugs on your ninth Lancer.

Using a spark plug wrench, unscrew the spark plug of cylinder 1. If the unscrewed spark plug does not hold in the key, to remove it from the well, use the removed spark plug tip. Do the same procedure with all the remaining candles and collect everything in reverse order.

What is needed for replacement

You will need a long 16mm spark plug wrench with a magnet.

Replacing spark plugs is carried out with two keys:

Experts advise buying a spark plug wrench with a plastic or magnetic retainer . The ideal solution would be a spark plug from a 16-valve VAZ .

Many motorists are faced with a problem when the spark plug key simply does not fit into the well. To prevent this from happening, you need to choose a candlestick with a smaller outer diameter (about 22 mm less than required). If the key does not fit into the spark plug well, you can lubricate it with a small layer of oil.

The photo shows that the walls of the spark plug keys vary in thickness.

Algorithm

Remove the 2 ignition coil terminals.

Using a 10 mm socket, unscrew the 4 bolts securing the coils.

Remove the ignition coils one by one.

After dismantling the wire coils, free access to the spark plugs opens.

When removing the candles, we look at their condition. Oil leaks on the spark plug body indicate a worn spark plug well sealing ring.

Periodicity

The timing of replacement depends on what kind of spark plugs you use in your car.

The manufacturer recommends replacement at the following intervals:

Which candles are better?

The “life” of nickel or conventional spark-forming elements in domestic conditions is shortened for reasons beyond our control. It is enough to refuel with low-grade gasoline once, and replacing the spark plugs on the Mitsubishi Lancer 9 is guaranteed. Question: are more expensive iridium varieties, which are even recommended by the manufacturer (although for some reason only for 2-liter modifications of the Lancer 9), capable of withstanding low-quality fuel? After all, their declared resource is twice as large.

Often, one additive is added to Russian fuel, which kills any spark plugs. It increases the octane number. It contains a substance that leaves a harmful residue on the electrodes and causes a short circuit. Brick-colored deposits are visible to the naked eye.

The additive kills SZ (brick-colored deposits)

So what should we do? If the additive kills all spark plugs, what's the point of buying expensive iridium ones? For this reason, many people use conventional products at a low price. If problems arise with sparking, they replace them with new ones. Drivers of another category (there are fewer of them) buy expensive spark plugs, hoping for their high quality. In most cases, they do not fail; they wear out only after a decent mileage. It turns out that both options have their pros and cons.

Maintenance schedule 4G18 1.6 l/98 – 122 l. With.

The naturally aspirated Japanese 4G18 engine, made in China, will last more than 300 thousand km if you adhere to the maintenance regulations:

  • It is recommended to change the oil and the corresponding filter every 10 thousand in the absence of hydraulic compensators or 5 thousand if they are present;
  • The timing belt resource is 90,000 miles, it is usually changed at the same time as the pump;
  • attachment belts are serviced more often - after 30,000 miles;
  • purging of crankcase ventilation is required at the turn of 20 thousand km;
  • a cast iron exhaust manifold can burn out only after 100,000 miles;
  • The service life of candles is 2 years on average, the battery is 5 years, but a lot here depends on the design and manufacturer;
  • The fuel filter must be replaced after 40,000 km, and the air filter after 15 - 20 thousand mileage;
  • depending on operating conditions, antifreeze loses its properties after a run of 40–50 thousand km.

An exhaust manifold

All operations can be performed independently in the garage and even in the field.

Choosing spark plugs for Lancer 9 correctly: what do you need to know?

It is recommended to change stock spark plugs every 30,000 km, and devices with platinum or iridium tips - every 60,000 km, which will increase engine service life. Using a car with worn spark plugs worsens the ignition quality of the air-fuel liquid, which leads to the formation of soot and soot on the surface of the cylinder-piston group and negatively affects the integrity of the sealing gaskets.

It is advisable to select spark plugs for the Mitsubishi Lancer 9 solely by the vehicle’s VIN code or by checking the compatibility of component part numbers, which will ensure optimal ignition quality. It is important to know that on cars of different engine sizes and gearbox types, spark plugs are not interchangeable and may differ not only in power, but also in design features.

DENSO SPARK PLUG - the simplest inexpensive candles. According to reviews, they last a long time and work well. The price is about 500 rubles for everything.

Varieties

Spark plugs for Mitsubishi Lancer 10 and 9 are consumable material. They are subject to mandatory updating after a certain time. According to the manufacturer's recommendations - after 30-60 thousand kilometers. The specific resource depends on the spark generator model - iridium ones last longer (4 years).

Classification by electrode type

Models are classified according to different parameters. One of them involves a difference in the electrode.

Difference in heat number

The manual for Lancer 9 cars states that you need to use elements with a heat index of 20 and higher. It is advisable to follow these tips.

Thus, the elements are classified as follows.

List of car models in which it was installed

Initially, the 4G18 engine was used in four Mitsubishi cars:

  • Kuda - SUV for Indonesia;
  • Colt Plus – Taiwan market only,
  • Space Star – a hatchback with a body increased by 30 cm;
  • Lancer is a compact sedan.

However, the engine characteristics are fully suitable for third-party cars:

  • BYD F3 – Chinese version of Lancer;
  • Zotye nOMAD – power 78 hp. pp., 2007 – 2009, Chinese SUV;
  • Proton Waja - Malaysian sedan;
  • Hafei Saima – compact Chinese hatchback;
  • Foton Midi - from 2010 to 2011, Chinese A-class compact van.

The Russian C-class sedan Tagaz Aquila was also equipped with this 107 hp engine. With.

Iridium spark plugs

The problem of poor quality gasoline was partly solved by replacing conventional spark plugs with spark plugs with iridium electrodes on two-liter 4G63 engines. Since 2006, iridium spark plugs began to be installed on engines with a volume of 1.6 liters:

Spark plug DENSO MR984943.

Spark plug NGK MN119487.

Advantages

Plugs with iridium electrodes are more resistant to metal erosion, provide a stable spark and have a longer service life.

The replacement frequency is 100,000-120,000 km . Judging by numerous reviews from owners, installing iridium spark plugs on a 1.6 9 Series engine gives extremely positive results.

Design Features

Within the series, the 4G18 engine was the penultimate modification with the largest combustion chambers, the volume of which is 1.6 liters. design features are:

  • 4 cylinders are made of liners inside a cast iron block, arranged in a row;
  • the cast iron exhaust manifold has a narrowed diameter to comply with Euro 4/5 standards;
  • the gas distribution mechanism has a SOHC V16 design, that is, one overhead camshaft with 12 cams controls 16 valves through rocker arms mounted on two axles;
  • the COP system regulates the ignition angle using a vacuum valve mounted on the throttle valve;
  • The camshaft drive is belt driven, its resource is limited to 100,000 km maximum;
  • the cylinder head is aluminum, narrow due to the single-shaft timing mechanism;
  • one wide cam controls the two exhaust valves of each cylinder, two narrow cams open the intake valves;
  • the user can carry out major repairs and boosts with his own hands.

Cylinder block Camshaft 4G18 COP system Scheme SOHC V12

Engines have hydraulic compensators, but not all of them, so the operating budget is increased either by using high-quality oil or by periodically adjusting the thermal valve clearances, which the manufacturer recommends every 30,000 km.

Step-by-step guide to replacing spark plugs on Lancer 9

Let's start replacing the spark plugs on the Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6

1. A set of spark plugs is required, in our case it is NGK BKR6E-11:

2. Remove 2 blocks from the low-voltage inputs of the ignition coils (indicated by a green circle):

3. Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the 4 bolts securing the ignition coils:

4. Pull out the tip of the high-voltage wire from 1 well into the cylinder head covers:

5. Pull out the tip together with the ignition coil from well 4 into the cylinder head covers:

6. Next, you need to do similar to the previous two steps with the second and third wells:

7. We put the removed ignition coils with high-voltage wires away:

8. Next, using a spark plug wrench, unscrew the old spark plug from 1 well. You need a key with a plastic or magnetic lock to easily remove the spark plug from the well. But if you don’t have such a key, don’t worry, you can first unscrew the spark plug and then use the rubber spark plug tip to remove it from the well.

10. We put a new spark plug in a spark plug wrench with a lock and screw it into place of 1 cylinder.

11. We perform the previous two actions with the remaining three cylinders.

12. Reinstall the ignition coils with high-voltage wires.

13. Screw on the ignition coils and reconnect the pads to the ignition coils.

14. Replacement of spark plugs is completed

conclusions

When replacing spark plugs, you may accidentally touch the hose on the valve cover - do not forget to put it back on the fitting.

The spark plug replacement is complete. You can now perform a test drive. To perform this procedure, you do not need to contact a service center at all - you can perform all the steps yourself.

The best manufacturers

The most famous on the market are Denso, Bosch, Champion and NGK. The latter is known for being the first to receive permission to produce iridium spark plugs.

There is no point in relying on any one company. They all do their job equally well and do not have any special advantages in their class. Technical indicators are decisive.

It is obvious that the best candles in the world are mercilessly counterfeited. And here the car owner must be on guard. Models should be purchased only at large and well-known outlets, taking into account the cost of the original products. For example, if you know that the original SZ from Denso costs 300 rubles, then the option for 100 rubles should immediately arouse suspicion.

List of internal combustion engine modifications

Initially, the management of the Mitsubishi concern took into account aspects of the legislation of the countries to which engines or cars with them were exported, therefore, with a base engine power of 127 hp. With. this characteristic was artificially lowered - by firmware of the on-board computer, using different attachments for the intake/exhaust tract.

Such modernization allows us to distinguish three conventional modifications of the 4G18 motor:

  • 98 l. With. – ICE for Europe and the Russian Federation, meets Euro-5 regulations, allows you to reduce insurance payments and road tax;
  • 105 l. With. – the motor was supplied to the Middle East;
  • 122 l. With. – Iran received the most powerful engine.

Flywheel 4G18

The 4G18 engine does not have any turbo versions or naturally aspirated options with design changes.

Replacing spark plugs on a Mitsubishi Lancer 9: the devil is not as scary as they make him out to be!

The replacement procedure does not require specialized skills or a lot of free time - all you need for the job is a set of spanners, a 16-point spark plug wrench, and a sheet of sandpaper. To replace spark plugs on Lancer 9 you must:

Upon completion of the repair, a control test is performed to ensure functionality. When choosing non-original components, the spark plugs may be filled with an air-fuel mixture: in this case, the parts are not compatible with the car and require calibration - by adjusting the fuel supply, you can set the spark plugs for optimal performance.

Replacing spark plugs

I have long wondered about replacing spark plugs, because... It is not known when the previous owner changed them. Like many Lancer drivers, and not only others, I settled on Denso spark plugs. Judging by the reviews, they are good candles, and the price tag is not high. One candle costs only - 111.20 rubles according to existential, code - K20TR-11

.

When replacing the spark plugs I encountered a little trouble, so I decided to describe in detail how I changed it: 1. First of all, remove the battery terminal. 2. Disconnect the terminals of the ignition coils, there are two coils, which means there are also two terminals.

3. Each ignition coil is mounted on two bolts, which are unscrewed using a 10 mm socket

4. Next, remove the ignition coils. You need to be very careful, because... When I removed the first coil, a spring in contact with the coil and spark plugs flew out, and here it is:

this spring fell on the protection closer to the interior. To get it I had to suffer. After taking it out, we assemble the coil contact to its original position.

I already removed the second coil more carefully

5. Now you need to remove the old spark plugs. To do this, I wanted to use a spark plug wrench, but it, in turn, simply did not fit into the spark plug well. And then I took out a set of tools that my wife gave me for some holiday, I don’t remember exactly which one.

From this set, the candle maker at first also did not want to go into the well, so he had to resort to a trick, namely, lubricate the surface with a small layer of oil. And then the candle holder from the set went into the required hole. But the spark plug wrench that was initially poked did not want to go in, although the diameters of the key heads are the same

No. 62. Replacing spark plugs and another nuisance

I decided to replace the spark plugs for several reasons. Firstly, there is soot in the exhaust pipe. Secondly, the idle speed began to drop significantly, so much so that sometimes the engine even stalls. Thirdly, the devil knows when the spark plugs were changed and whether they were changed at all.

First of all. Previously, the end of the pipe was suspiciously black, but after installing the nozzle I noticed that a black coating appeared on it too. At first I thought about the oil consumption and decided to analyze the deposits. Having gasped on a white sheet of paper brought to the exhaust pipe and wiped the pipe with the same sheet of paper, it became clear that it was black dry soot. Basically, black soot deposits are formed due to incomplete combustion of fuel in the cylinders, which burns out in the exhaust. As far as we know, incomplete combustion of fuel occurs for the following reasons: • the air filter is clogged, which causes the engine to lack air and the mixture becomes enriched in fuel; • incorrect operation of spark plugs, i.e. fuel does not burn out due to a bad spark; • it is likely that the lambda probe is faulty; • low-quality fuel, diluted gasoline that does not have the required detonation; • long periods of downtime after which during a “cold” start the engine runs on a rich mixture.

From these reasons, I immediately ruled out a clogged air filter, because... It was changed a year ago and only traveled 1800 km. But the rest is all porn

. It is not known when the spark plugs were changed. Nothing is known about the lambda probe either. I pour the same fuel at the same gas station as always, before this I had no problems on another Lancer and I didn’t notice anything like that before. There is no escape from downtime; sometimes the car doesn’t move anywhere for two weeks, even though I visit it constantly.

Considering that there is still a problem with a drop in idle speed and shaking of the car, I decided to first change the spark plugs and clean the exhaust, and then observe how the engine behaves and whether deposits will form again.

So. I read who installed which candles and reviews of their use. Choosing between NGK BKR6E-11

and
Denso K20PR-U11
.
Denso K20PR-U11
spark plugs on Exist.ru for 112 rubles.
PC. and the simplest spark plug wrench Airline AK-S-04
, tubular 16x270mm with a rubber insert for gripping the spark plug for 114 rubles.

The spark plugs must be tightened with a tightening torque of 22 Nm. I don’t have a torque wrench, it’s not cheap, besides, a spark plug wrench cannot be attached to it, and there is no special elongated head with an elastic band for the square of the torque wrench. It’s not clear how to use it at all... Apparently I don’t know something yet. I had no time to figure this out, but I wanted to tighten the candles correctly. But the Russian man with his ingenuity will not be lost!
