Any motorist knows that the correct operation of the entire vehicle depends on a large number of important factors, one of which is the transmission. You should not naively believe that this element of the system will be able to work tirelessly all its life without the participation of its owner. Just like other basic structures, the gearbox needs maintenance and replacement of consumables. If the car owner has a car such as a Lada Priora, he must periodically supply fresh oil to the box, which will improve the functionality of all internal components. If during the operation of the vehicle there is a lack of lubricant or the unit has been using used fluid for too long, the motorist may encounter a number of serious problems that will begin to “harass” the transmission. In the material below we will consider all aspects related to changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox.
Instructions for changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox.
How to change the oil in a box on a VAZ 2170-VAZ 2172
Since the gearbox is located next to the engine, when driving both the engine and the gearbox heat up, and accordingly the oil also heats up, so we recommend that you change the oil only when the engine is hot, this way it will drain much better and all the dirt will come out with it. if it suddenly turns out that your car is cold, then don’t be lazy and warm it up and you don’t need to stand still, but drive for a while, since the gears start working only when the car is driving at speed (Because of this, the box will heat up better), At idle, nothing will spin and, accordingly, the box will be colder when the engine warms up!
1. First, you will need to unscrew the drain plug from below, through it the used oil will drain into the container. If the protection suddenly gets in the way, then remove it (How to remove the protection, read the article: “Replacing the crankcase protection in a car”) otherwise the oil will it gets in and stains the protection, when you start to unscrew the plug, turn it with a wrench until it starts to rotate easily, then unscrew it with your hand (If you are wearing gloves, take them off, otherwise you will have to throw them away later, because they are covered in oil get dirty) and remove the plug, the oil will begin to pour out (place the container) at first it will be fast, then much slower, in order to create a vacuum so that the oil drains better from the box, also remove the dipstick from the upper hole (into which the oil must be poured) and then the oil will flow It flows faster and merges more completely.
If metal shavings are found in the oil, then rinse the box, but if something more serious (Large particles of metal, for example), then we recommend contacting a service center, they will determine where exactly these particles broke off from (If from gears, then most likely the box You will have to repair the gears)!
2. Now we move on to pouring the oil, first pour a little new oil into the box (Just a little, using a special tool that had to be made, as we showed earlier) so that it pours out of the box and then tighten the drain plug ( Don’t forget to wipe it dry with a cloth) and as soon as the cap is screwed into place, you can safely fill in the oil, just don’t overdo it, otherwise you’ll have to suck out the excess with a syringe and you don’t need to fill in all the oil from the bottle at once, but a little at a time and check constantly You need a dipstick for the level, this way you will never overfill and there will be no problems in the future.
Watch a video that uses the Lada Priora as an example to show how the oil in the gearbox in such cars is changed; additional information will not be superfluous for you.
Should I put synthetic or semi-synthetic in a box, is there a big difference between them and is it worth paying extra?
Read the instruction manual, it will indicate the oil that should be poured into the box!
No matter what the manufacturer writes, after a couple of years of driving, the oil in the gearbox loses its original properties, for example the same viscosity. Old oil, plus if it’s still hot outside, the gearbox starts to ring, of course you can drive, but it’s still worth changing.

Preparing for the event
There are three stages when replacing the lubricant in the gearbox of a Priora car.
- The first stage is preparing the car.
- The second is draining used transmission oil
- The third is to fill the gearbox with oil.
Stages of replacing lubricant in a gearbox
It is worth noting that before you start draining the waste, the Priora needs to be warmed up a little, that is, it is better to drain it after a short trip, but if the car is cold and you have to drive a couple of kilometers, idling will not be able to properly warm up the box. At the first stage, we need to collect all the necessary tools that are necessary to avoid confusion during the robot.
So, we need: a number 17 open-end wrench to unscrew the plugs closing the drain holes, a vessel for collecting waste, a watering can with an attached tube for pouring fresh lubricant. Following safety rules, you need to use protective optics and gloves, otherwise the consequences will be damaged clothing.
For convenient work, it is necessary for the Lada to be in the inspection pit, so that the left wheels are as close to the edge as possible; this measure is necessary for easy access to the transmission drain hole.
Important, do not forget to put the Priora on the handbrake, or use a special shoe. If the Lada is equipped with sump protection, then it must be removed. The vehicle is now ready for the replacement operation.

Changing the oil in gearboxes Lada Granta, Kalina, Priora, Vesta and XRAY
29 April 2015 LadaOnline 95 216
Lada Granta, Lada Priora and Lada Kalina 2nd generation cars are equipped with the same type of gearbox. If we are talking about “mechanics”, then this is the famous manual transmission 2180-2181. An automated transmission (AMT) is also built on this basis. And the Jatco automatic transmission from Nissan is currently installed only on the Lada Granta and Kalina 2. Let's consider the process of changing the oil in the 2181 gearbox and automatic transmission in detail.
Manual transmission 2112 | Lada Priora |
Manual transmission 1118 | Lada Kalina |
Manual transmission 1119 | Lada Kalina |
Manual transmission 2180 | Lada Kalina 2, Lada Granta, Lada Priora |
Manual transmission 2181 | Lada Kalina 2, Lada Granta |
Manual transmission 21807 | Lada Vesta |
Manual transmission 2190 | Lada Granta |
Automatic transmission (Jatco) | Lada Kalina 2, Lada Granta |
AMT (based on manual transmission 2180) | Lada Priora, Granta, Kalina, Vesta, Lada XRAY |
Changing the oil in manual transmission and AMT
About the volume of oil in the gearbox. Depending on the type of manual transmission, different amounts of gear oil may be required:
- Manual transmission with traction control drive - 3.1 liters.
- Manual transmission with cable control drive or AMT (robot) - 2.25 liters.
You will need: a set of wrenches, new gear oil, an empty container, a funnel and a hose. Warm up the oil in the gearbox (drive 5-10 km) so that it becomes less viscous.
Procedure:
- We find the drain hole on the gearbox housing from the bottom of the car and unscrew it using a “17” wrench.
- We drain the old gear oil into an empty container, which we place under the drain hole.
- We fill in new transmission oil through a hose that we insert (depending on the type of manual transmission): instead of a dipstick (for convenience, the air filter housing can be unscrewed and moved to the side), or instead of the reverse switch, which we unscrew with a “22” key.
Add oil to the gearbox
conveniently through the yellow plug. Only the air resonator needs to be removed (for Lada Vesta/XRAY). The plug itself is attached to one bolt with a TorX head, which can be unscrewed with a regular head (photo author):
Attention! If the oil drained from the gearbox is dark in color and metal particles are visible in it, the gearbox should be washed. Pour 1-1.5 liters of special flushing oil into the box crankcase
With one of the front wheels hanging, start the engine and shift into gear. After 5-7 minutes, drain the flushing oil and fill with clean transmission oil.
- Video on changing the oil in a Renault manual transmission
on a Lada Vesta: - Depending on the type of manual transmission, checking the oil level in the gearbox is carried out:
- using the dipstick (the oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks).
- through the inspection plug (the oil level should be at the lower edge of the inspection hole).
Changing the automatic transmission oil
The working fluid in the automatic transmission is filled by the manufacturer for the entire service life of the vehicle.
That is, we change the oil in the automatic transmission of a Lada Kalina 2 or Grant only when repairing the gearbox, replacing oil seals and gaskets, removing wheel drives, etc.
It is recommended to check the level and change the oil in the automatic transmission (if necessary) at a manufacturer-certified PSSS. If you decide to change the automatic transmission oil yourself, then follow these instructions:
- Unscrew the drain plug (No. 2) and the overflow tube (No. 3) using a “19” wrench and a “5” hexagon.
- Drain the transmission oil into an empty container, install the overflow plug in place, and then tighten the drain plug and install a new O-ring on it.
- Pour about 1 liter of new oil into the dipstick hole.
Checking the oil in the automatic transmission should be done on a warm engine (at an air temperature of 20C, you need to drive for about 10 minutes for the oil to warm up to a temperature of 50-80C). Place the vehicle on a level surface, and then:
- With the engine running, move the gearbox lever from position “P” to “1”.
- switch from position “1” to “P”, holding the lever for 5 seconds in each intermediate position.
- remove the dipstick, wipe it and reinsert it into the automatic transmission until it stops.
- Remove the dipstick again and check the transmission oil level, which should be within the hot oil section “A”.
- if necessary, add oil.
- Let us remind you that, unlike a manual transmission, which can produce a whine, an automatic transmission has proven itself well over several decades.

Quality of transmission oils
Lubricant is squeezed out through the gaskets. The kinetic viscosity index is significantly low and affects the transmission in general. Dynamic viscosity - at low temperatures, in winter the shear resistance of the grease is performed. This is a rather bad indicator for transmission operation.
The transmission oil in the Lada Priora gearbox is checked according to the maintenance regulations after 15,000 km and when leaks are detected on the gearbox housing. To check, the machine must only be in a horizontal position, on a level plane. The motor must cool down. There is a hole at the top of the gearbox for the oil level indicator (dipstick). There are marks on it that will show the amount of oil.
What oil should I use?
From the factory, LUKOIL TM-4-12 mineral oil was poured as transmission fluid. It could only be used during the break-in of a new car. Therefore, according to the recommendations of AvtoVAZ, after some time it had to be changed to a fresher liquid with certain performance properties.
The manufacturer specifies that the new oil must be synthetic or semi-synthetic and meet viscosity grade SAE 75W-90. This is an all-season liquid that works at ambient temperatures from -40 °C to +35 °C. 75W-80 and 80W-85 oils are also suitable. 80W-90 liquids can be used in regions where winter temperatures do not drop below -10...-12 °C.
In addition to viscosity, the oil must comply with API GL-4 class. This includes transmission fluids that are designed to operate in medium-loaded gears: hypoid, bevel and spiral-bevel, operating at oil temperatures up to +150 °C and contact pressure up to 3000 MPa.
Let's consider which oils are most popular in the LADA Priora gearbox.
LUKOIL TM-4 (GL-4) 75W-90
This is a semi-synthetic transmission fluid used in manual transmissions, differentials and transfer cases of cars and trucks. It is made from highly purified mineral base oil, synthetic components and a multifunctional additive package.
The oil has high anti-corrosion, anti-foam, anti-wear and viscosity-temperature properties. It reliably protects transmission elements under high loads, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox at low temperatures and has high oxidative and thermal stability.
SHELL SPIRAX S4 G 75W-90
Semi-synthetic gear oil API GL-4 for manual gearboxes of cars and small trucks. Used in VAG cars as a first fill fluid.
The oil does not destroy synchronizers, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox, and protects transmission elements from shock loads, corrosion and wear. It has an extended service life and improves the performance of the gearbox.
Castrol Syntrax Universal 75W-90
Synthetic multi-purpose gear oil for gearboxes and manual transmissions. Suitable for use in synchronized manual transmissions of cars and trucks, as well as final drives and differentials of trucks and construction equipment.
The fluid has excellent fluidity at low temperatures and effectively protects against wear under high loads. It has an extended service life and is compatible with conventional mineral oils and sealing materials.
ZIC GF TOP 75W-90
Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. Compatible with synchronized boxes. In Hyuindai and Kia cars it is used as a first fill fluid. Belongs to material class GL-4/5. Meets the requirements of 75W-85 GL-4 oils.
The fluid ensures reliable lubrication of all transmission elements at high speeds and heavy loads, cleans the gearbox and axles, increases the service replacement interval, reduces wear, protects against corrosion and has excellent thermal-oxidative characteristics.
LIQUI MOLY Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil GL4+ (GL 4/GL 5) 75W-90
Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. It is compatible with synchronizers and is resistant to aging. Thanks to a special additive package, the fluid reliably protects transmission elements.
The oil prevents wear and corrosion, works well under high loads and maintains its characteristics at high temperatures. Can be used in gearboxes that require GL-4 oils and manual transmissions that are combined with a hypoid transmission.
List of recommended oils for Priora
The Tolyatti Automobile Plant prematurely gave its answer: “what to fill.” A whole list has been compiled of what can be poured into the Lada Priora gearbox with justification - a link to standards that confirm the quality of the product of each manufacturer.
The list of recommended automotive lubricants for the Lada Priora gearbox is as follows:
- Rosneft KINETIC 75W-90 from 40 to 35; 80W-85;
- Novoil Trans KP 80W-85;
- Lukoil TM 412 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90;
- THK Trans KP 80W-85; THK Trans KP Super 75W-90;
- Tatneft Translux TM4-12 75W-85;
- Shell Spirax; Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90;
- Trans KP-2 80W-85.
An important clarification regarding API groups: for almost all oils this is GL4, with the exception of Rosneft Kinetic 75W-90, Shell - they correspond to GL 4/5. The difference in viscosity is as follows:
- 75W is the degree of viscosity at which the crystallization (freezing) temperature is -45֯С, and begins to thicken at -30֯С;
- 80W is the degree of viscosity, which corresponds to a crystallization temperature of -30°C, and it begins to thicken at -15°C;
- 85W is the degree of viscosity for which crystallization begins at -15֯, and already at -10֯ it thickens.
Replacing the pistons on the Priora with plugless ones. Let's do it right
- “Do the valves bend on the Priora 1.6 16 valves”;
- “Which VAZ engines do not bend the valves?”
- Before all work begins, the engine is thoroughly cleaned of all accumulated deposits;
- The motor support bracket on the right is removed. To do this, use the “13” key to tighten its bolts;
- Take the key “15”; They are used to unscrew the fastenings of the generator holder with the front support. This bracket is also removable;
- The following are disconnected: the pipeline, followed by the cylinder head, then the flywheel and, finally, the oil filter;
- The pipe supplying the pump to the cylinder block is dismantled;
- The crankcase pan is removed along with the oil pump and the oil receiver attached to it;
- Use a “ten” to unscrew the bolts on the crankshaft rear oil seal holder. It can be easily removed - you just need to pry it under the lugs on the body with a screwdriver;
- Unscrew all the screws on the connecting rod covers;
- The connecting rods along with the pistons are pulled out;
- Next, the rings are removed from the pistons. If they are deformed or damaged, they should be replaced during reassembly;
- The piston pin is pushed out by a mandrel by 16-18 mm. Now you can remove the piston from the connecting rod.

Changing the work off
First of all, we put on protective elements. Next, you need to get rid of the dirt and rust that are present on the drain hole of the Lada. We unscrew the nut with a wrench, then it can be unscrewed by hand. In the other hand you should hold the receiving vessel for testing. When the lid is almost removed, you need to be ready to substitute a container for the old liquid.
When the dark stream begins to weaken, the vessel can be placed on the floor; the entire draining process takes approximately 20-25 minutes. Keep track of how much oil has leaked out. After everything has been drained, you need to clean the dirty drain hole. Next, we tighten the plug of the hole for draining the waste into the gearbox; do not tighten it very tightly, so as not to break the thread, the consequences are leakage of lubricant.
The next step is changing the oil in the Priora. It is important to pour very carefully to avoid overflow. The filler neck can be easily found by the dipstick inserted into it. We take out the dipstick and clean it of waste residues. We insert the previously prepared watering can with a tube into the neck and fill in new oil. Overfilling can be avoided by constantly monitoring the oil volume with a dipstick.
Checking and replacing transmission fluid
Checking the level or changing the oil in the gearbox should only be done with the vehicle in a horizontal position. To take the most accurate readings, place the car on a flat plane and allow the engine to cool. At the top of the box there is a dipstick with marks.
Objective indicators are provided on a dry meter. Therefore, the dipstick must be wiped well with a rag. After this, it is inserted into the hole and then removed. You will have to add oil to the box if its level is at the minimum marking or lower.
The optimal indicator is for the lubricant to reach its maximum level.
The transmission fluid is replaced with a warm car. Operations are carried out in the following order:
It is very important to use high-quality transmission substances. Otherwise, noises and crunches may appear during the operation of the gearbox, and one or another gear will be difficult to engage. When deciding which oil to buy for the Priora, you need to remember about numerous fakes. They literally flooded the market
A purchased product of questionable quality or from an unknown manufacturer poses a potential threat to the gearbox. To successfully purchase oil, you should contact trusted service centers or stores.

Lada Priora is a modern, comfortable car that has a manual transmission with five forward gears and one reverse gear. The mode and service life of the Priora gearbox depend entirely on whether there is gear oil and on the conditions of use.
For this reason, you need to monitor how much oil is in the box and change it in a timely manner. The technical descriptions of the Lada Priora plant say that changing the transmission oil is required after every 75,000 km or after 5 years.
If the Priora was purchased at a car dealership of an official representative, then the gearbox will be filled with Lukoil TM 412 lubricant, which is recommended by AvtoVAZ. Break-in transmission oil is poured into the car. There is no need to immediately change the gearbox oil. This is done during the first maintenance, following the instructions of the manufacturer of this car model. It is more difficult to change gears with break-in lubrication. Transmission oil is intended to flush the gearbox system from technical debris. The potential requires the use of quality materials that can withstand enormous loads and high temperatures.
What happens if the replacement is untimely?
Untimely oil change in the LADA Priora gearbox leads to faster wear of transmission parts. Oil that has lost its working properties cannot protect the gearbox.
Consequences of untimely box maintenance:
- Wear accelerates and parts quickly fail, especially bearings
- Metal dust resulting from wear clogs oil lines, causing seals and oil seals to be squeezed out
- The gearshift lever begins to vibrate, and the sound of the transmission turns into a howl.
- Gears do not shift or are thrown out of position
If the gears and bearings are worn out, then changing the oil will not affect the operation of the transmission in any way. In this case, damaged elements must be completely replaced.
Replacement frequency and lubricant selection
The manufacturer has determined that oil changes in the Priora gearbox are required at intervals of 75 thousand km. This is a fairly large gap, designed for the fact that synthetic-based oil will be poured into the box. The conditions in which the vehicle is operated often dictate a reduction in this interval. For example, the car constantly “walks under a trailer” or with increased loads on the transmission.
Then it is better to remove the oil level dipstick as often as possible and monitor not only the lubricant level, but also the technical condition: contamination and fluidity, especially if the service mileage is more than 50 thousand km. Another reason for early replacement of the lubricant in the box can be buying a car second-hand without marks in the service book. The answer to the question of what kind of oil to pour into the Priora transmission should be sought first of all in the car’s operating instructions.
Traditionally, AvtoVAZ recommends products for use. Lubricant produced by the same company is poured into the gearbox of new VAZ cars; it acts as a break-in and flushing lubricant until the first maintenance; after replacing it, you can select a product from another company. Here are brief recommendations on how to choose the right gear oil for the VAZ 2170.
- The viscosity grade must correspond to that specified in the operating instructions.
- It is not recommended to use mineral based oil. The service mileage determined by the manufacturer is accepted for synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. When pouring mineral water, you will not be able to correctly determine the service interval, because the mineral base deteriorates faster than the synthetic one.
- It is preferable to purchase liquid lubricants from official dealers located in your city. This may also be useful in an unusual situation, when you need to add oil to the gearbox due to a leak. A sales representative will help you choose the right brand of oil for topping up.
- You should not add various additives and additives to your gear oil. As a rule, all the necessary additives are already present in the lubricant; nothing else is needed.
- Before purchasing, you should read reviews about this product. This can be done on the Internet, filtering out rave reviews from agents selling lubricants.
We present the types of all-season gear oils according to the SAE classification in the table.
SAE viscosity grade | SAE 75W – 80 | SAE 75W – 90 | SAE 80W – 85 | SAE 80W – 90 |
Ambient temperature range at which the oil is used | From -40 ⁰С to +35 ⁰С | From -40 ⁰С to +35 ⁰С | From -26 ⁰С to +35 ⁰С | From -12 ⁰С to +45 ⁰С |
Transmission fluid selection
Boxes of new VAZ cars (manual or automatic transmission) are filled with materials from. This lubricant acts as a flushing and break-in lubricant. The oil in the box needs to be changed during the first maintenance. Then you will have to select a new lubricant product
In order not to make a mistake with your choice, it is important to pay attention to:
- viscosity index corresponding to the operating instructions;
- service mileage, focused on semi-synthetic or synthetic oils;
- reliability of service centers or dealers offering lubricants;
- no need to add additives or other means to improve gear shifting: modern high-performance transmission substances already contain the necessary ingredients;
- reviews from car enthusiasts: they will tell you which oil is best.
Synthetics have the longest service replacement intervals. It retains lubricating properties at different temperatures. However, synthetic lubricant should not be poured if there is a risk of damage to the sealing materials.
The optimal viscosity index of transmission oil for Priora is marked 75W-80 or 75W-90. Both products with these designations provide lubrication at -40°C. The maximum ambient temperature for the first option is limited to +35°C, for the second – +45°C.
How to replace it yourself?
You can change the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ Priora 16 valve model 2022 and other years of production with your own hands.
Tools and materials
The procedure for changing the substance occurs using:
- wrench 17;
- fresh lubricant;
- a syringe with a connected transparent tube;
- containers into which you will drain the “working off”;
- clean rags.
You can learn about changing the lubricant yourself and all the nuances that the car owner will encounter during the task from the video shot by user ValeRiaN.
Stages of work
How to drain and fill fresh oil in a Priora gearbox:
The car is driven into a garage with a pit, onto a lift or onto an overpass
This is important because you will have to gain access to the underside of the car. Depending on the fasteners, use a screwdriver or wrench to unscrew the engine mudguard fastenings. Set the splash guard aside. Locate the drain hole on your car's transmission
Place a container under it. Unscrew the plug of the control or filler hole, if there is one, or remove the dipstick from the neck, this will reduce the pressure in the lubrication system when draining the “working off”. If access to the dipstick is difficult, remove the air filter housing and move it to the side. Using a wrench, unscrew the drain cover. Be careful when unscrewing. At first, the oil will come out of the system in a thin stream, but after the plug is completely unscrewed, it will begin to flow under great pressure. Use gloves. It is advisable that when draining the fluid the engine is not cold, due to this the substance will be more viscous and will drain out of the transmission faster. While the oil is draining, visually assess the condition of the drain plug. If it is too dirty, clean it of debris and wear and tear. Check the condition of the seal; if it is badly worn, it is recommended to replace the part. Otherwise, you may encounter a problem with lubricant leakage. When the liquid has drained, assess its condition. If the gearbox is functioning properly, it should be free of metal dust and other impurities. The presence of deposits indicates contamination of the unit, so it is recommended to wash it. To clean the transmission, the filler hole must be closed and flushing is performed using a special product. There is a large selection of such liquids; the product is purchased at a car store. To flush, pour about 1.3 liters of cleaner into the gearbox housing. Then the front part of the car must be hung, for this the wheels are placed on a jack. Start the engine and engage first gear, press the gas. Due to the fact that the front of the car is raised, you can drive in first gear for several minutes. After this, the procedure for draining the waste fluid from the system is repeated. If the flushing oil is too dirty after cleaning the unit, the procedure must be repeated. After this, wipe the drain and fill plug again. Remove the dipstick from the inspection neck to check the level. Now you can fill it, it is done through the control hole. You must pour fresh oil into the transmission using a syringe with a connected pipe, otherwise you will not be able to refuel the unit. One end of the hose is inserted into the control hole, on the other side the liquid is supplied into the system using a syringe. About 3.1 liters of oil is poured into the gearbox, the volume of the substance is controlled by the dipstick. When the filling procedure is completed, install the meter in place. Reinstall all previously removed components in reverse order. When the process is complete, take a test drive of the machine and check the lubricant level again.
We recommend: Replacing the handbrake cable on a VAZ 2107
Remove the dipstick from the inspection hole of the Priora gearbox. Unscrew the cap and drain the used oil from the box. Pour fresh lubricant into the unit, monitoring its volume by the level of the dipstick.
View from the outside
A convenient and comfortable Priora car is one of the budget representatives of the sedan class. Manual transmission two-shaft, 5-speed. The box is assembled from three parts (sealant is placed between them): clutch housing, gearbox housing, rear cover.
A magnet located in the clutch housing socket holds metal debris and shavings. The drive gears of the input shaft are meshed with the forward gears. Oil is supplied to the driven gears through the hollow secondary shaft. It houses the forward gear synchronizers.
This unit is well assembled. And the synchronizers on the main switches are proof of this. Their operation is clearly adjusted, which reduces wear on the mechanical connection and noise when shifting gears. Accordingly, more durable operation of the Priora gearbox is ensured. But while monitoring the oil level, we should not forget that the quality of Russian roads leaves much to be desired. And this is one of the reasons for more frequent lubricant changes.
Leaks on the gearbox housing are also a motivating signal to action.
In order to check the transmission oil level, you must first place the car on a flat surface. Wait until the engine cools down completely. Remove the dipstick from the hole in the top of the box. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth and put it back
Then take out the dipstick again and pay attention to the marks located on it. The level should reach the maximum value
Visually assess the quality of the work. The main thing is not to miss the time when you need to pour new oil into the box.
Checking the lubricant level in the Lada Priora gearbox with a dipstick
The oil itself has two components: a base and an additive package. If the chemical composition of the base (base) is responsible for the property of the material, then additives correct the performance characteristics. This includes maintaining a certain temperature. The working fluid must not foam!
Playing the role of a lubricant, the oil also serves as a “broom”, cleaning the gearbox from technical debris.
Functions of oil in a manual transmission in a car
Lubricant in a manual transmission (MT) essentially has one function - reducing excess friction that occurs during the interaction of moving parts (for reference, a manual transmission is, in fact, a set of various gears and shafts). This is necessary to reduce wear on parts and improve the performance of the gearbox. With increased friction, the speed of the car decreases, changing gears is difficult, fuel consumption increases and problems with the engine begin. Therefore, the functions of the oil in a manual transmission on a Lada Priora are always the same - reducing this very friction to an acceptable level.
A car driver should know what the consequences of using a lubricant that has exhausted its service life are:
- There are problems with switching speeds. The shift lever moves with some difficulty, and a knocking sound is heard from the gearbox when changing gears.
- The speed limit changes. With increased fuel consumption, the vehicle speed decreases and the engine makes more noise.
- The movement of the car is uneven; when the speed decreases, jerks begin, as if you press the brake pedal.
The described signs mean, among other things, that it is time to change the oil. But it is also recommended to check the condition of the fluid itself - in certain situations, the listed problems are caused by breakdowns of other components in the car. The oil itself changes in the following way: it becomes thicker, darkens, and inclusions of soot and metal shavings appear in it.
Types of gearboxes in LADA Priora
LADA Priora cars were equipped with a mechanical and robotic gearbox.
A manual transmission called VAZ-2170 was used in cars from 2007 to 2015. After 2014, it remained only on 8-valve cars. The transmission was a modernized version of the VAZ-2110 gearbox. This is a 5-speed unit combined with a final drive and differential.
The unit was not highly reliable. Here the gears, bearings and synchronizers wore out quite quickly, and many oil seals began to leak oil at low mileage of the car. In addition, the gear shifts in this box are unclear, the gearshift lever is poorly fixed, and the transmission control drive and clutch require constant adjustment.
Starting from 2015, LADA Priora with 16-valve engines was equipped with a new gearbox called VAZ-2180. It is a deeply modernized version of the VAZ-2112 gearbox. The control mechanism of the new unit is now installed on top, and therefore does not depend on the temperature of the oil, the volume of which has been reduced by 1/3. Rigid shift rods have been replaced with a cable drive, which has reduced noise and vibration of the gearbox. The new box has overcome almost all the diseases of the previous version.
Among the minuses, one can note a crunch when changing gears, oil leaks, and failure to engage gears after a mileage of 50 thousand km. Despite the installation of a cable drive, noise during operation of the transmission and vibration of the lever still remained.
A robotic gearbox called VAZ-2182 AMT was also installed on Prioras with 16-valve units. Structurally, this is the same VAZ-2180 gearbox, where instead of a cable drive, actuators from the German company ZF are responsible for shifting gears.
The manual transmission turned out to be controversial. On the one hand, it has become easier to drive the car, since the clutch pedal has disappeared, but on the other hand, the operation of the unit is unclear and illogical. This was especially true during heavy traffic and traffic jams. AMT problems include transmission overheating, oil leaks, electrical problems and vibration of the gearbox selector.
Features and nuances when choosing oil for the Priora gearbox
Any car requires attention. Lada Priora is no exception. And the joy of owning your own car will last longer if certain rules are followed. Namely: the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the operation of the car. This includes timely replacement of the working fluid in the gearbox. This procedure will extend the life of various components of the car. And the operation of the gearbox itself directly depends on the quality of the lubricant. Based on the technical recommendations of the plant, the lubricant in the Priora gearbox should be changed every five years. In kilometer equivalent, this will be 75,000 km.

How to buy original oil
Surely many have encountered suspiciously high discounts on any products from well-known brands that are associated with almost nothing. As a rule, such discounts operate almost constantly and this is due to the fact that the oil is not original. This can be easily checked at the purchase stage.
When purchasing a product at a surprisingly low price, be sure to look at the GOST and certificate. If you are not completely sure, then simply enter the numbers printed on the packaging into a search engine. There you will find detailed information about the product. For any well-known and trusted brand, searching for information will not take more than a minute.
If you ignore this basic thing, then there is a risk of purchasing low-quality oil, which not only will not help correct problems with the transmission and gearbox, but will also worsen the existing situation. You should especially not miss this rule when contacting a previously unknown auto shop.
