Drivers are notified of the presence of malfunctions in various vehicle systems using icons on the instrument panel. It is not always possible to decipher the meaning of such burning icons intuitively, since not all car enthusiasts are well versed in cars. In addition, on different cars, the graphic designation of one icon itself may differ. It is worth noting that not every light on the panel only indicates a critical malfunction. The indication of light bulbs under the icons is divided into 3 groups by color:
Red icons indicate danger, and if any symbol lights up in this color, you should pay attention to the signal from the on-board computer in order to take measures to quickly resolve the malfunction. Sometimes they are not so critical, and it is possible to continue driving the car when such an icon on the panel is on, but sometimes it is not worth it.
Basic icons on the dashboard
Yellow indicators warn of a malfunction or the need to take some action to drive the car or service it.
The green lamps of the symbols inform about the vehicle’s service functions and their activity.
Let's present a list of the most frequently asked questions and an explanation of what the burning icon on the panel means.
What does the wrench mean on the StarLine alarm key fob?
Under standard conditions, the complex performs a lot of security functions. But if you need to transport the car to a service station to perform repair work or check the electrical circuit, the Starline A91 alarm system has a special service mode. If the corresponding icon lights up on the display, this indicates that the alarm is now in service mode. If this mode is enabled, the angle/tilt sensor is deactivated, and it is also impossible to activate a number of functions: .
- arming or disarming;
- switch to programming mode;
- activation of the “hands-free” mode;
- closing the doors, hood and trunk via a command to the central locking;
- activation of the “Panic” and “Anti-robbery” mode;
- automatic arming;
- calibration of the central unit of the system;
- remote start from the remote control or execution of autorun parameters;
- linking new key fobs to the system;
- change of individual code.
When activated, a key icon appears on the display, which is either constantly lit or blinks periodically. Which is better - Starline A93 or Pandora dx.
What to do to make the wrench light up on Starline
When the service mode is set, repair or maintenance work can be carried out, so you need to know how to connect this option. On the Starline A92 model alarm, this is done in several ways, but you must always first disable the security mode in order to quickly transition to this state.
How to turn off silent mode Starline A93
The first way is through a key fob. To do this, press button two and hold it for four seconds. After this, the key fob will emit one melodic signal, and a nut icon will appear on the display.
The second method is cursor. The owner uses short presses to move the cursor to the icon with the key symbol, and then briefly presses the third button. Now the corresponding icon lights up on the display, and some of the security functions are deactivated.
If you have a GSM module and a SIM card with a positive balance, you can turn it on via your phone. Using a special service application from Starline, you just need to visit your personal account and activate the transition to service mode.
In addition, the owner can activate it via voice command.
You need to make a call to the system number and say the corresponding code “51”. The option can be activated via SMS. In this case, a similar code must be written in the SMS. In service mode, you cannot record additional remote controls, program additional functions, or change the secret unlock code.
How to remove a wrench on a Starline alarm
If all maintenance work has been carried out, then it is necessary to transfer the system to the standard state by disabling the service mode. On the Starline A93 alarm system, to do this, you need to press the second button for a long time (for four seconds). After this, the remote control plays a melodic signal, and the car blinks its headlights twice, indicating that the mode has been successfully turned off.
This option can also be disabled using the cursor method. Press the third button for a long time until a melodic signal sounds. Then, with short presses, the cursor is positioned on the nut icon. To turn it off, press the first button once. The symbol is now no longer active and the car flashes its headlights twice as confirmation.
For this type of system, a convenient mobile application is available, controlled directly from a smartphone. When installing it, you can activate these options remotely. This functionality is also available from your personal account on the official website. Additionally, you can deactivate the mode via a phone call with voice command 50 or via SMS with similar numbers in the content. In order for such commands to work, the system must have a special GSM module, as well as a SIM card with a positive balance.
Tips for disabling anti-robbery Starline A92
What to do if the wrench is on and the StarLine alarm does not turn on
In some cases, the standard scheme for removing from the service state may not work. This means you need to check the following places:
- power element. A weak battery may prevent correct signal transmission. Therefore, you need to check this particular part first;
- battery. The reason for the incorrect operation of the Starline A39 alarm system may be a dead battery;
- If the battery in the remote control runs out before the service mode is deactivated, and after replacement the icon is inactive, this does not mean that the mode itself is disabled.
For completely correct operation of the system, you need to re-activate and then deactivate the mode. An alternative way out is to exit this mode by using a spare key fob (here the exit is carried out only by pressing the keys, since there is no LCD display).
- central control unit. Its failure may lead to incorrect response to commands from the remote control. Therefore, it is important to check its functionality and serviceability. These works are best carried out by a specialized service;
- Incorrect connection of the positive yellow wire, which should go to the ACC ignition switch. Without constant contact, the turbo timer, autostart functions will not work, and the transition to and from the service position will not be carried out correctly.

There are 2 options: the relay in the signaling unit is faulty (i.e. the unit is for repair or replacement), or the signaling unit was installed by “garage professionals” and the wiring was hooked up crookedly. Polyube is on the way to the alarm installers, let them look for the jamb. If you installed it yourself, then remove the unit and take it to a service center for diagnostics.
PS: I’m in Tver this weekend, I’ll be at the dacha, come and have a look, maybe we can manage without the service.

Reasons why the ABS malfunction indicator turns on spontaneously
When the functions are performed correctly, the ABS light comes on, indicating that the wheels are unlocked. The electronic innards realized that the ABS needed to be turned on. The presence of other indicators (for example, ESP) will allow the car to cope with wet roads or ice on its own.
Usually the alarm is triggered due to a problem. This is when the ABS error light comes on:
- sensors are clogged with dust, moisture, dirt;
- the sensor is rusty;
- problems with the computer: the device lights up the indicators spontaneously, for no reason;
- the chassis is acting up, displacing the ABS sensor;
- The fuse has blown.
The ABS sign lights up in any car, regardless of its class, purpose or in which part the drive is installed - front, rear or both. As an example, the Volkswagen line of cars from the late 90s: in it, the ABS check was triggered, even if the fault did not concern the brake system.
Consequences of a faulty ABS
ABS, like any other element of a car, can wear out, losing reliability over time. The essence of the system is to ensure proper braking. Each wheel has a “personal” sensor, which allows you to gradually adjust braking and reduce speed without blocking all wheels at once. A system that is not working correctly will not be able to do this.
You can disable ABS, but you still shouldn’t do it. If the ABS does not perform its functions correctly, damage to the suspension may occur. An ABS lamp that comes on in an unusual situation threatens to cause the driver to simply lose control of the vehicle.
Fixing the ABS light coming on
With proper timely diagnosis, it is quite easy to get rid of problems or adjust the operation of the system. During operation, the driver is able to influence the operation of the unit himself - through the ABS module pump or valves. In addition, a lot depends on the causes of the problems. Sometimes the ABS sensors and wires are working properly and are in the right place, but the module itself is acting up. In this case, there is only one way out - to change the module, since the manufacturer did not intend to repair it.
If the problem lies in a malfunction of the on-board computer, you need to reset the settings. But, of course, only after a complete check of the sensors, cables and module.
What to do if the brake on the key fob is on and the car does not start with the key
There are cases when the car refuses to start when autostarting, and the key fob shows the inscription “Brake”. This means that the car believes that it has not applied the brake (handbrake) and for safety does not start the engine. Accordingly, to do this, you need to check whether the handbrake is tightened or whether the pedal is pressed (depending on the type of connection).
Starline won't open the car
It is also necessary to check that the orange-violet wire on the alarm is connected correctly. It is responsible for transmitting the relevant data to the central unit. It is best to contact specialists to identify an accurate diagnosis and eliminate the problem.
Maintenance intervals
As such, there are simply no uniform standards for all brands, since each manufacturer himself decides the optimal replacement time for his brand or several brands. But, there are some standards that have been developed over the years and tested by experience:
Changing engine oil: for passenger cars, the estimated period is about 15–30 thousand km. mileage, depending on operating conditions. Of course, if the conditions are not standard, then the replacement must be carried out a little more often and the fluid used for the appropriate climate;
What to do if the ABS light comes on?
The anti-lock braking system is designed to eliminate possible problems while driving and prevent errors on the part of the driver when operating the pedal. When braking sharply, ABS will not allow the wheels to completely lock, excluding skidding, for example on slippery sections of the road - the car will gently reduce speed. If you see that the ABS light is on on the dashboard, reduce the pressure on the brake pedal. Then the car will do everything for you.
Information icons
The machine icon may light up differently; it happens that the “car with a wrench” icon, the “car with a lock” icon, or an exclamation mark are lit. About all these notations in order:
When such an indicator lights up ( a car with a key ), it informs about malfunctions in the engine (often a malfunction of a sensor) or the electronic part of the transmission. To find out the exact cause, you will need to perform diagnostics.
A red car with a lock lights up , which means that problems have arisen in the operation of the standard anti-theft system and it will be impossible to start the car, but if this icon blinks when the car is locked, then everything is normal - the car is locked.
A yellow vehicle indicator with an exclamation mark notifies the driver of a hybrid vehicle that there is a problem with the electric drive. Resetting the error by disconnecting the battery terminal will not solve the problem - diagnostics are needed.
the open door icon lit when a door or trunk lid is open, but if all the doors are closed and the light on one or four doors continues to shine, then often the problem should be looked for in the door terminals (wire contacts).
The slippery road icon begins to flash when the stability control system detects a section of slippery road and is activated to prevent slipping by reducing engine power and braking the slipping wheel. There is no need to worry in such a situation. But when a key, a triangle, or a crossed out skid icon appears near such an indicator, the stabilization system is faulty.
Handicraftsmen and reset
Some people manage to reset this indicator temporarily in this way
:
- Pull the ignition key out of the lock;
- Press the odometer button for 5.0 seconds;
- Without releasing the button, insert the key and place it in the extreme right position (to start). The panel should all light up with LEDs;
- At that second when the entire panel lights up, release the odometer button and then repeat pressing and releasing five times with a minimum interval. Key for several thousand km. mileage will go out. But will this save you?!
Many people do not recommend this method, since there is a high probability that you will be 1000 km away. If you forget about the signal on the side of the car, you will cause even more damage, and sometimes even irreparable.

Reporting a malfunction
The battery icon lights up if the voltage in the on-board network drops; often this problem is associated with a lack of battery charge from the generator, so it can also be called the “alternator icon”. On vehicles with a hybrid engine, this indicator is supplemented by the inscription “MAIN” at the bottom.
The oil icon , also known as a red oil can, indicates a drop in the oil level in the car engine. This icon lights up when you start the engine, and does not go out after a few seconds or may light up while driving. This fact indicates problems in the lubrication system or a drop in oil level or pressure. The oil icon on the panel may have a droplet or waves at the bottom; on some cars the indicator is supplemented with the inscription min, senso, oil level (yellow inscriptions) or simply the letters L and H (characterizing low and high oil levels).
The airbag icon can light up in several ways: either the red inscription SRS and AIRBAG, or “a red man wearing a seat belt,” with a circle in front of him. When one of these airbag icons lights up on the panel, the on-board computer notifies you of a malfunction in the passive safety system, and in the event of an accident, the airbags will not deploy. Read the article on the website for the reasons why the airbag sign lights up and how to fix the problem.
The exclamation mark icon may look different and its meaning will accordingly be different. So, for example, when the red (!) light is on in the circle, this indicates a malfunction of the brake system and it is advisable not to continue driving until the cause of its occurrence is determined. They can be very different: the handbrake is up, the brake pads are worn out, or the brake fluid level has dropped. A low level is precisely what poses a danger, because the reason may not only be in heavily worn pads, as a result of which, when you press the pedal, the fluid disperses throughout the system, and the float gives a signal about a low level, the brake hose may be damaged somewhere, and this is much more serious. Although, very often the exclamation mark lights up if the float (level sensor) is faulty or shorted, and then it simply lies. On some cars, the exclamation mark is accompanied by the words “BRAKE”, but this does not change the essence of the problem.
