In 1996, production of the VAZ-21106 car was launched. This machine is the result of cooperation between two companies. We are talking about AvtoVAZ and Mega-Lada. The VAZ-2110 became the basis for this car. The described vehicle was distinguished by the fact that a two-liter engine was installed on it. This allowed the driver to easily overtake even imported cars.

Engine Description

Many drivers were worried about how this car differs from a regular modification. We are talking about the VAZ-21103 model, where a one and a half liter engine was installed.

The characteristics of the VAZ-21106 after the car’s release impressed many. First of all, you need to pay attention to the gasoline engine, the volume of which was 2.0 liters. Some modifications of the car were capable of developing power from 135 to 150 horsepower. There is no point in comparing with really powerful cars, but for an ordinary “ten”, given its mass, this was quite enough. Together with the manual transmission, this car was truly a “monster”. One of the versions has a sixteen-valve engine. The model reaches speeds of up to 100 km/h in 9 seconds. It should be noted that the maximum speed is 200 kilometers per hour. Moreover, it should be noted that these are not theoretical data, but actually those that were obtained under operating conditions.

Due to the fact that the VAZ-21106 car became quite popular, the 2.0-liter engine was distinguished by mass production. Therefore, if it was necessary to purchase any parts, no one had any problems.

VAZ-21106: how and why they created a “ten” with a powerful Opel engine

This car, which appeared two decades ago, has become almost legendary.
And to this day, the VAZ-21106 remains the most powerful and fastest production (although not mass-produced) model of the Lada brand. The VAZ-21106 version was born thanks to motorsport. In the mid-nineties, AvtoVAZ managers decided to advertise the “ten” that was on the production line by exhibiting the racing version of the model at Russian and international rallies.

It was impossible to turn a standard car into a competitive racing car, and the Togliatti team agreed to install a two-liter Opel engine on the rally car. But in order to get the special version approved for racing, it was necessary to produce 2,500 road cars with the same body, cylinder block and suspension mounting points. This is how the small-scale VAZ-21106 appeared.

The first prototype of the model was shown in 1996 - it was a bright, spectacular car, called the “Yellow Shark” (it is the one shown behind the title photo). In 1998, production of commercial sedans VAZ-21106 started.

How was it different from the usual “ten”? The most important thing is that under the hood there was a two-liter Opel C20XE engine with a power of 150 hp. With. (a version with a power of 136 hp was also produced), working in tandem with an Opel manual gearbox.

The rigidity of the body was increased, the original engine shield and subframe were used in the design, original springs and shock absorbers were used in the suspension, and the ZF hydraulic booster from Opel was used in the steering. But the brakes remained standard, with drums at the rear.

According to the passport, the VAZ-21106 could accelerate to hundreds in 9.5 seconds, and the maximum speed was 205 km/h. These figures have not yet been surpassed by any production Lada, not even by the 2019 Vesta Sport.

The international racing career of the “ten” ended as soon as it began. The only stage of the World Rally Championship in which the car started (Finland-98) ended with a retirement due to technical reasons. AvtoVAZ no longer had money for further refinement of the car and development of the racing program.

After leaving international racing, the need to produce a homologation batch of 2.5 thousand cars disappeared. Nevertheless, over the course of several years, three hundred VAZ-21106 sedans and even a small batch of coupes were made in Togliatti.

How to drive a car?

Even though parts for the engine are quite easy to purchase, there are many problems with this machine. This is due to the fact that, unlike the usual ten, this modification was released in limited quantities. It should be taken into account that there are individual heating systems installed here, wiring that is not found in other Opel or VAZ cars. Carrying out computer diagnostics is useless. The unique drive and other parts can be a little confusing.

At the moment, there is a widespread belief that this car has an Opel suspension. However, this is not true. There are subframes and triangular-type arms created for the described car. All other parts are collected from many other successful cars. Drivers who want to purchase a VAZ-21106, the characteristics of which can be considered unique, should understand that maintaining this vehicle is quite expensive and expensive. However, the car is a collector's item.

“Hot Ten”: why everyone loved the two-liter VAZ-21106

We recently talked about how difficult it was for the ordinary Togliatti “ten” to be born. VAZ designers always dreamed of some more powerful, “sporty” modification in the style of the German GTI. Initially, the plans for the 2110 family included just such a modification - the three-door hatchback 2113 (not to be confused with Samara-2 with the same index!).

However, the “especially powerful ten” appeared with the participation of other Togliatti enthusiasts: at MIMS-96 the “Yellow Shark” concept car was presented, which was a joint project of AVTOVAZ and. Why was the “super ten” needed? The answer is very simple - for homologation in the WRC group, a certain number of “civilian” versions were necessary. In addition, at the end of the dashing nineties in the Russian Federation there was already a demand for such “hot” versions of VAZs. After all, a “ten” “charged” in this way allowed the owner to amuse his ego and pride by “punishing” some “Boomer” from a traffic light.

Machine characteristics

The car was produced from 1996 to 2008. Also sold under the name “Lada-21106”. A 5-speed mechanical transmission was installed. The tank received a volume of 43 liters. The vehicle is capable of transporting loads up to 430 kg. It should be said, continuing the review of the VAZ-21106, the coupe (body type) is one of the most popular modifications of this car. The main car is sold as a sedan with four seats.

In 1996, Russians were offered the most powerful version of the then popular “tens”. The model with the VAZ-21106 index received a 150 horsepower engine with a torque of up to 200 Nm. The car was produced in small batches until 2000. In addition to the powerful engine, the model received quite a lot of improvements to the brakes and steering. The price of such a car at the beginning of 1998 was $21,000.

Steering and brakes VAZ-21106

It is clear that the usual ten were not structurally ready for such power, so the car had to be modified. This is what I was doing.

First of all, we got rid of the standard “vegetable” brakes. Modern disc brakes replaced aluminum rear drums.

Instead of domestic struts, Koni sports shock absorbers were installed. A ZF hydraulic booster appeared. For an additional fee, air conditioning and sports bucket seats were installed. The model also had forged wheels, which are not only lighter than steel, but lighter and stronger than any cast wheels.

Machine modifications

At the moment, there are several different types of this car. Moreover, they differ not only in appearance, but also in fillings.

The first of them received awards for good design. It had a 150 horsepower engine. The brakes were disc type, installed on the rear wheels. Shock absorbers are from Coni. If the car owner wanted, he could install air conditioning and a sports interior. This VAZ-21106 was produced until 2000.

The next version was a budget version, and its technical characteristics turned out to be weak. The brakes are drum-type, the design has become less attractive. Here the wheel arches were improved, and production lasted until 2003. The engine is less successful, since when it overheats it works worse and is also more susceptible to low-quality gasoline.

The third version of the car was similar to the VAZ-2110. If we talk about technical characteristics, then they are, in principle, similar to the second generation, the only difference is in the installed shock absorbers.

In fact, the VAZ-21106 was produced until 2004. However, there are later cars that were probably built to order. Some four-door vehicles were created to order for the traffic police. But due to the complexity of the design, they were not used for long.

Many drivers took a test drive in order to check the technical data of the VAZ-21106. They noted that the car had good dynamic performance, as well as excellent handling and stability. At the same time, passive safety was at a high level. This was achieved through a rigid body, as well as the use of a subframe. Thanks to him, the engine shield and some parts were a single structure.

In the nineties, various tuning companies began to be actively created in Russia, trying to refine and diversify the appearance of domestic cars. Following the general wave, VAZ designers Andrey Ruzanov and Nikita Matyukhin decided to open a tuning studio.

Their first work was tuning body kits for “Samara” and “Niva”, after which they had the idea to transform the look of the recently released “tens”. In a short time, in order to be in time for the international motor show, a sports body kit was created, which included bumpers, a radiator grille, extended fenders and door sills. Also, original wheels were made for the prototype, and it itself was painted yellow, which is why it was called the “Yellow Shark”. This is how it appeared before visitors to the MIMS 1996 auto show.

But the “Yellow Shark” was only a prototype with external tuning, and the engine and transmission remained unchanged. At the MIMS-1996 exhibition, this car was highly appreciated and received a special prize. After this, further work on it began to be carried out in the Pilot Industrial Production (EPP) of VAZ.

In the meantime, VAZ decided to create a sports car with a two-liter engine for Group A rallies. But this was not so easy, because for the car to participate in racing it was necessary to produce at least 2,500 civilian versions of such cars per year. And it was decided to take the above-mentioned “Shark” as the basis for this car. The “racing” version of the “ten” has undergone major modifications and received a separate index - VAZ-21106.

Unique modifications

A unique modification has also been created, which received a two-door coupe body. A similar VAZ-2106 was assembled to order. Only 150 copies exist.

In addition, the manufacturer also created a sports modification. Some cars from this series took part in the international championship. From 1999 to 2006, the described car took part in circuit races, as well as in some others held on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Results

Overall, this car turned out to be quite successful. It has good technical characteristics, as well as dynamic and controllability characteristics. Today you can purchase this vehicle, but you need to understand that it will be quite difficult to maintain it. This is due to the unavailability of many parts. But it should also be noted that if there are problems with the motor, it will be quite easy to replace or repair it due to the fact that the engine was mass produced.
