Replacing the timing belt on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars

The timing belt (gas distribution mechanism) is responsible for synchronizing the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft. If it breaks, stopping the engine is inevitable, and in some cases, deformation of the valves, damage to the pistons and cylinder bores from their fragments is possible. Therefore, it is important to choose the right high-quality and compatible part. It is better to do this using the catalog or the markings on the belt, which, unfortunately, do not have a uniform standard.

When choosing, you need to know the number of teeth, their profile, and blade width. It is also necessary to pay attention to the production date of the timing belt, since the material from which it is made has its own expiration date.

This article will tell you how to choose a timing belt, how the markings on it are deciphered and how to determine the year of manufacture.

VAZ timing belts on AvtoVAZ cars

Toothed timing belts used on Lada models for replacement...
Greetings to all VAZ car enthusiasts in my auto blog RtiIvaz.ru. Today we will look at the timing belts used on your Lada cars.

In front of us lies on the hood of my Renault Logan car one of the belts to be replaced (see video). Let's first find out what a toothed rubber drive is used for. The timing belt serves to transmit the rotational movement of the crankshaft to the camshaft, whose task is to open and close the intake and exhaust valves in a strictly defined sequence. This rubber drive has 111 teeth and is designated with the number 111-19 II CR, manufactured by the Balakovo rubber plant BRT.

On cars “Kalina”, “Priora”, as well as VAZ-21012 and other models with a V8 engine, exactly the same strap of 111 teeth, 19 mm wide, is installed.

For VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112 cars with a sixteen-valve engine, a timing belt with a number of teeth of 136 and a width of 25.4 mm is used. Its number is 136-25.4 HNBR. If we compare this drive with a 111-tooth drive, then for sixteen valve engines it is 6.4 mm wider.

The next strap is designed for the VAZ-2170 Priora. This strap has 137 teeth and is 22mm wide. Its designation is 137-22 HNBR. Also suitable for model 2190 “Grant”, VAZ-1118 “Kalina” with a sixteen valve engine. Please note that they have a 21126 engine installed. Such an engine can be installed on VAZ-2112 models, which also use a rubber gas distribution mechanism drive, the number of 137 teeth, 22 mm wide.

Next, let's look at the strap from the VAZ-2190 Lada Granta model with an eight-valve engine. This timing gear drive has 113 teeth and is 17 mm wide (113 SP 170 H). It is similar to the timing drive from the VAZ 2108, but is slightly narrower in width and has two more teeth - please do not confuse it when purchasing.

As mentioned above, for the Lada Granta, which has a sixteen-valve engine, there is a timing belt of 137 teeth, 22 mm wide.

The more valves in the engine, the more powerful the drive, since the engine power increases, so the load increases proportionally.

Watch the video below, it shows all the timing belts used on eight and sixteen valve engines of the family of AvtoVAZ front-wheel drive models.

Let's look at the photos in order:

  • Timing belt for VAZ-2108, 2109, 21099, as well as other models with the 2108 engine - 111 teeth, width 19 mm. Design number: 2108-1006040-10.

  • Timing belt for VAZ-2112 - 136 teeth, belt width 25.4 mm. Design number: 2112-1006040.

  • Timing belt VAZ-2170 "Priora" - 137 teeth, belt width 22 mm - engine 21126 sixteen-valve. Design number: 21126-1006040.

  • Timing belt for VAZ-2190 "Lada Granta" 113 teeth, width 17 mm - engine 21116 eight-valve. Design number: 21116-1006040.

For front-wheel drive AvtoVAZ models, four types of timing belts are produced, which have a different number of teeth and different widths, which creates some confusion when purchasing them. I hope that this video and photo will help you understand the timing belt size used specifically for your VAZ car model. Video:

How to read timing belt markings

Unified international marking of timing belts is carried out in accordance with ISO standards using the “5 digits + x + 1, 2 or 3 digits” template, for example, ISO- 58111×19 , where:

  • 58 (first 2 digits) – profile code;
  • 111 (next 3 digits) – number of teeth;
  • 19 – width in millimeters.

The second ISO marking option is “numbers + letters + numbers”, for example, 122RU20 , where:

  • 122 – number of teeth;
  • RU – profile code;
  • 20 – width in millimeters.

The third option is marking like 58127x3/4-HSN or “58127x19-HSN”, where:

  • 58 – profile code;
  • 127 – number of teeth;
  • 3/4 or 19 – width in inches or millimeters, fractional numbers starting with 0 indicate inches, for example, 3/4″ is equivalent to 075, that is, 0.75″;
  • HSN – belt material (in this case it is synthetic rubber).

The fourth option is (found on Japanese cars) type A 487 R 100 , where:

  • A - automobile;
  • 487 - belt length in inches (48.7″);
  • R - tooth type (Round - round);
  • 100 - belt width in inches (1.00″ = 25.4 mm);
  • To calculate the number of teeth, you need to divide the belt length (48.7″) by the tooth pitch R (0.375″) = 130 teeth.

In addition to the standardized one, most timing belt manufacturers use their own product markings that differ from ISO.

Typically, they are numbers indicating the internal catalog code of the part, in which key characteristics are encrypted. This is done, for example, by Bosch, Contitech, VAG.

Gates belts, in addition to the internal catalog number, contain clear information about the belt size, number of teeth, date of manufacture, country of manufacture, and also have protection against counterfeiting.

Marks Dayco belts quite informatively, in an ISO-like format “3 numbers + letters + 3 numbers”, for example, 122RX190, where:

  • 122 (3 digits) – number of teeth;
  • RX (letters) – profile code;
  • 190 (3 digits) – width is 1/10 mm, that is, 19.0 mm.

Dear customers, in order to avoid errors when sending the POWER GRIP 5521 timing belt, in the “Comment” line indicate the model, year of manufacture of your car and the number of valves, engine size.

The simplicity of the design lies in the fact that rotation is transmitted from one shaft to another using this part. Each type of engine has its own design features, which is why the belts are produced differently.

Their differences are assessed according to the following parameters:

The part experiences heavy loads, so it must be strong, elastic, and provide good interaction with the pulleys and rollers.

High-strength polyester cord of GATES belts increases the belt's ability to withstand heavy loads, maintains stable belt tension and provides excellent belt length stability. The upper part of the fabric layers provides elasticity and flexibility. Premium fiber-reinforced chloroprene rubber (strong fiber optic tension strands are helically laid to provide increased flexibility and tensile strength) makes the belt resistant to oil, heat and wear and prevents deposit build-up.

Thanks to their successful design, they retain their length throughout their entire service life.

Main technical characteristics

The timing belt profile is trapezoidal and meets the requirements of US, UNECE and Russian GOST standards. The main dimensions of the belts are indicated on the packaging.

The toothed belt has an internal profile of protrusions (teeth), the number of which is 111, with a width of 19 mm.

During the production process, all belts undergo 100% quality control in terms of geometric dimensions and control tensile strength. All stages of production, as well as suppliers of component materials, are certified for compliance with the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard. Identical technologies and materials are used in the production of timing belts, which are supplied to the assembly lines of VAZ, GAZ, UAZ, General Motors, Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and other car manufacturers.

The optimal combination of materials allows for high wear resistance of belts and low noise levels. In addition, US GATES belts can operate over a wide range of tension forces without significantly compromising durability, reducing the risk of belt failure due to improper belt tension adjustment.

The estimated service life of USA GATES timing belts is 125,000 km or 2 years.

Monitoring the tension and condition of timing belts must be carried out during each scheduled vehicle maintenance.

Before replacing the timing belt, you need to check and pay attention to the following:

- if the belt is damaged, it requires replacement;

— check the degree of tension;

- The belt must be dry and clean.

The design has a tension roller; the whistle may be a result of its wear. Replacing the part completely solves the problem.

If the cause cannot be determined, the belt should be replaced with a part from another manufacturer.

Timing belt rupture can be caused by the following factors:

— natural wear and tear (operation was carried out beyond the established period);

— the part was initially defective;

— malfunction of pulleys, shafts, tensioners;

- excessive or insufficient belt tension.

The bearing is the most vulnerable part and often fails. Once the belt is removed, it is easy to diagnose bearing failure.

Roller with offset center. When rotating, the belt is tensioned, the degree of tension is fixed using a bolt.

It is important to monitor the condition of the timing belt tensioner roller. It is the roller that makes the tension level of the belt drive optimal.

It is necessary to check the condition of this part and make repairs if necessary.

There are three tension options:

I installed the Trially kit GD 708. No problems and the price is adequate

Put on a Bosch belt.

take the Gates, along with the rollers, I’ve already driven 40 thousand)

Bosch has been running for about a year and a half, so far everything is fine.)

I also thought about Boshevsky.

Take it, the quality is good) I got it for about 600 rubles

PowerGrip is a good and timeless company, and most importantly not Russian. A little more expensive, but eternal. The main thing is not to run into a fake. How to distinguish the original on the drive is full of information.

Looked at us, one fake(

Well then, either AvtoVAZ or Balakovo! The belts are good and the most common; there is no point in counterfeiting them, since these are not expensive spare parts.

They themselves suck. My grandfather's car does this a little. He says he changed the timing belts a lot. Our Russians are the most eager. I'll probably take the Bosch, the reviews are praising it

I drove an AvtoVAZ for 2 years - 50 thousand km. I drove to Balakovo for 2 years - about 60 thousand km. Nothing ever broke.

Well, maybe it also depends on the frequency of driving and driving style. Now I will be doing a lot of long-distance driving, I’d rather not take risks with Russian timing belts.

I drove my car both to Irkutsk and Sochi))) and I rev it up to 5 thousand rpm) so...))))

Well, I also turn it up to 5, sometimes up to 6.5)

Well, that's normal then)

PowerGrip is a good and timeless company, and most importantly not Russian. A little more expensive, but eternal. The main thing is not to run into a fake. How to distinguish the original on the drive is full of information.

I got the flu. Well, it’s a given)))…although there is a reinforced contitech that costs 200 rubles more than anything else.

How to choose a timing belt for an engine

The catalog article is often duplicated by the basic marking according to the ISO standard, indicating the number of teeth, their type and blade width. Generally speaking, when selecting a compatible timing belt, you need to consider the following parameters:

  • Number of teeth . Usually it can be found out from the description of the standard factory belt or calculated manually.
  • belt width. As in the case of teeth, you can find out from the documentation or measure with a caliper.

    When taking measurements, keep in mind that the old “eaten” timing belt may turn out to be narrower than it was from the factory!

  • Tooth profile . Timing belt teeth have different sizes (the distance between the centers of the teeth and grooves, their height), as well as shape. It can be trapezoidal, square, oval, involute. It is this parameter that is encoded in numbers or letters according to ISO.

The main profiles of timing automotive belts have the following characteristics:

Various tooth profile shapes

  • C, ZA, L or 41 – trapezoidal tooth shape, distance between (9.525 mm), height 2.74 mm;
  • RPP - with groove (involute), distance 3/8″ (9.525 mm), height 3.5 mm (used on VAZ-2108, 2112);
  • R, CL, CP, SP, RP or 58 – semicircle, distance 3/8″ (9.525 mm), height 3.6 mm;
  • MR - semicircle, distance 3.8″ (9.525 mm), height 3.4 mm (used on Chevrolet Lanos, Sens);
  • RU - semicircle (sinusoidal), distance 3/8″ (9.525 mm), height 3.4 mm (VAZ 21126 is used);
  • XR or 76 – semicircle, distance 3/8″ (9.525 mm);
  • Y, YU, MY, YS or 39 – semicircle, distance 8 mm.

When selecting a tooth profile, it is worth considering that some types of profiles are interchangeable and differ only in small design features (for example, involute and semicircular, as on a VAZ), but not always. Therefore, belts with different ISO letter codes may be similar. For example, codes 124 AL 26, 124 MY 26, 124 Y 26, 124 RHP 254, 124 HG 260, and 39 124×26-HSN (Toyota Corolla 1.4 1992) or 111 CL 19, 111 CP 190, 111 EL 19, 111 HP 190, 111 HTD 19, 111 RP 190, 111 SP 190 and 58 111x19 (8-valve VAZ engine) - indicate intercompatible timing belts.

Designation of belt material

  • Material . The material from which the belt is made is coded by the letters on it. If there is no material marking on the timing belt, then in most cases this means that neoprene rubber was used. EPDM refers to ethylene-propylene-diene rubber - the most inexpensive and least resistant material to liquids (antifreeze, oil, fuel), but resistant to high temperatures and abrasive wear, and has slow aging.
  • CR – chloroprene rubber with increased resistance to abrasion and the effects of fuels and lubricants. However, it has low resistance to temperatures (in hot weather and in severe frost it tans and cracks faster than others).
  • HNBR or HSN is a hydrogenated nitrile butadiene synthetic rubber, characterized by the longest service life and temperature resistance, but also the most expensive.

To select the correct part, you should study the repair manual for your car and the parts compatibility catalogs.

    Involute, pitch 9.5, width 19mm. The profile when I was interested in this question did not come across “at random”, I need to dig through the catalogues. If any information appears, please share it here.

    Look towards more modern models of Lada, there is a round tooth very similar to the HTD-8-M, despite the fact that the gears are not much more expensive than eight-wheel gears. I bought the gears for myself to try, but I still haven’t gotten around to the belts to try them on.

    Volodya, slow down your horses.

    Go to the auto shop, ask for gears on the Lada Kalina, Renault Logan and some Lada heel with a similar muzzle to the Logan. HTD8M should be there. Cost compared to erosion. In general, gasoline will be more expensive to get there

    so I can cut out both gears with wire and it will be cheaper than one sprocket costs in the store

    I only downloaded the program GearTrax_SE_2017 because There are no loads for such a belt, the handles can be turned by hand well, I am redoing the machine, now I installed 21 and 42 gear teeth just from the pump and from the camshaft, the motor got strained under a full table and wedged with gaps, I decided to double the reduction, I drew 12 and 48 teeth, the same profile

    Timing belt VAZ 2109

    The VAZ-2109 car was produced for many years by various factories in the Soviet Union, Russia, CIS countries and abroad from 1987 to 2011. All parts and mechanisms of the car are subject to wear and tear as they are used. This includes the timing belt on the VAZ 2109. The reason for this may be poor-quality and careless installation of the belt during timing assembly, wear of associated parts, or poor quality of the belt itself. Standards require belt replacement every 60-65 thousand km or after 4 years of operation.

    Timing belts

    This important car part is produced by various companies - BOSCH, AMD, CONTITECH, DAYCO, FEBI, GATES, HEPU, INA, NTN-SNR, OPTIMAL, RUVILLE, SKF.

    Both repair kits - belt and rollers, and each part separately are available for sale. Prices vary depending on the manufacturer and place of sale:

    • The GATES repair kit for the VAZ-2109 costs approximately 1,100 rubles.

    • Contitech - 1250 rubles.
    • “BRT” (158 RU) - 1000 rubles.

    The repair kit includes a belt and a tension roller. The belts have one side (top) flat, the other in the form of oval teeth. The surface of this side is figuredly corrugated. There should be no tears at the base of the teeth. You should buy only branded belts; fakes pose a hidden threat.

    The original differs from a fake, first of all, in packaging. The box must be made of high-quality cardboard, neat, with clearly printed inscriptions. The original box has a transparent sticker on which is printed a list of engines for which this repair kit is suitable, a diagram of the assembled drive with all the pulleys and rollers, the number of teeth on the belt, and a QR code.

    Using it, you can go to the company’s website and get all the detailed and reliable information about the product. For example, the Contitech box has the article number CT527 printed on it.

    On counterfeit boxes, all information is printed directly on the cardboard of the box. On the original box it is clearly written in which European country this belt was made. The spare part in the box is packed without kinks or kinks. The tails of the cord stick out along the edge of the belt.

    Originals and fakes from other companies are checked using the same criteria. GATES packages have a security hologram. Article number 5521XS-111x, which means that the belt is reinforced, 111 teeth. The company logo is printed on the belt and roller.

    This table shows the original repair kits with the article number and approximate cost.

    Let's look at the main sizes of belts used on various VAZ vehicles.

    Questions and answers

    • What do the numbers on the timing belt mean?

      The numbers on the timing belt, depending on the manufacturer, can be a catalog article, ISO marking, serial number or batch number, production date, number of conditional workpiece tracks, etc.

    • Where in the marking can I look for the timing belt production date?

      The production date of the timing belt is usually indicated in the marking next to the numbers of the conditional tracks of the workpiece. It often has a truncated format like “week-last digit of the year” (like “44-8”, which corresponds to the 44th week of 2022), but it can also be complete.

    The need to replace the timing belt

    If the tension roller is installed incorrectly or the belt tension is too strong, its pin is deformed, the roller tilts slightly, and the belt slips. It may begin to cling to protruding parts of the machine. If suspicious places are found on the belt - deep scratches, abrasions, dents or tears in the teeth - the belt must be replaced immediately.

    There should be no traces of oil on it. Firstly, this indicates a seal leaking somewhere, and secondly, the belt itself is in danger. If the belt breaks while the engine is running, the timing valves may collide with the pistons and bend. And on a VAZ-2109 with an 8-valve engine, if a belt break happens on the road, then this situation will not be fatal for a skilled driver. You just need to know what actions to take in this case. And, of course, it never hurts to have a spare timing belt.

    Procedure

    The car must be put on the brakes and engaged in fourth gear. The first step is to place a jack, lift the car and remove the front right wheel. This will provide access to the area required for maintenance. Then you should remove the boot cover from the timing drive mechanism. It is secured with three 10 mm socket bolts.

    This gives access to the generator pulley. It also needs to be removed. This is not always easy, as the nut often rusts and gets stuck.

    With the alternator pulley removed, access to the timing belt is available. After carrying out these operations, you should check the coincidence of the marks on the timing sprocket (the mark in the form of a bump) and the slot on the housing. If there is no match, then they must be combined. This ensures control of the engine's top dead center.

    Now you can remove the old belt. After removing it, you need to set the timing marks on the gear on the crankshaft and on the car body. If it is inconvenient to turn the crankshaft, you can engage fourth gear and push the car forward a little.

    After completing this operation, you can install a new belt. There is a special roller for tensioning it. It is usually sold complete with a belt. If the old roller looks worn, it must be replaced with a new one.

    Due to the presence of eccentricity, turning the roller ensures belt tension. The rollers of the new design have two holes on the plane; pins are inserted into them, and a lever is installed between them, with the help of which the tension roller is turned. The rollers on the VAZ-2109 carburetor have a 36 mm nut, due to which the roller was turned using a spanner.

    The normal belt tension is determined manually. With light force, the plane of the belt can be rotated 90 degrees with two fingers. After tensioning, the roller is fixed with a 17 mm lock nut.

    After the timing belt is properly tensioned, the alternator pulley is installed in place and the alternator pulley is fixed; the alternator belt should be carefully pulled onto it. After this, the timing belt protection and the right wheel are installed. Then the car starts and if all the symptoms that were on the old timing belt are absent, then the job is done successfully.

    Replacing a timing belt is considered a rather difficult job, but quite accessible to an averagely qualified mechanic. In the end, it must be said that in order to prevent situations of rupture or unexpected wear of the belt right on the road, it should be replaced in a timely manner and preventive maintenance of the car should be carried out.

    Main malfunctions of the timing belt of the VAZ 2109 engine

    These include the following:

    • the thermal clearance of the valves is broken;
    • camshaft bearings or cams are worn;
    • broken valve springs;
    • valves stuck;
    • the strap is stretched or weakened (slips or slips, perhaps skips if the teeth are worn);
    • the camshaft timing pulley is damaged;
    • oil seals (valve stems or guides) are worn out;
    • carbon deposits on the valve plate.

    There are several factors that are also typical for malfunctions of the crank mechanism:

    • general wear and tear of the power unit elements caused by the exhaustion of the main resource determined by the manufacturer;
    • the engine operating rules have been violated (this may include the use of low-grade fuel, low-quality oil, prolonged operation at high speeds).

    One of the most serious problems that can happen is the so-called stuck valves. Such a breakdown leads to complete engine failure and expensive repairs. There may be two reasons.

    Factors that caused the malfunction

    The first is operation on low-grade fuel, as a result of which resin is deposited on the valve stems. The second factor is resonance caused by broken springs. In this case, when the piston reaches TDC, the valve does not have time to fully seat itself. This kind of problem is extremely rare, but it doesn’t hurt to know about it.

    A common malfunction with a violation of the thermal clearance occurs due to wear of the bearings or camshaft cams. Also possibly the camshaft pulley. Often the cause is incorrect adjustment of the gap or incorrect selection of the washer.

    In fact, it is quite difficult to correctly diagnose timing belt faults, since signs may indicate other engine components and assemblies not related to the timing belt.

    Therefore, diagnosing breakdowns of the gas distribution mechanism often involves removing the cylinder head cover for a visual inspection of the condition of the elements. A timing malfunction in any case leads to a violation of the valve timing, as a result of which unstable engine operation is observed, the inability to gain power, etc.

    Signs of trouble

    You can carry out diagnostics yourself if you pay attention to phenomena that clearly or indirectly indicate problems with gas distribution:

    • at low and medium speeds a knock is heard in the cylinder head;
    • the power of the power plant has been reduced;
    • a metallic knock when starting the engine, which goes away as it warms up;
    • The camshaft drive is noisy;
    • there are strong pops in the exhaust system;
    • exhaust gases have a blue tint;
    • increased oil consumption is observed;
    • engine detonation when revving up;
    • the motor overheats;
    • failures during engine operation.

    For an accurate diagnosis, the best option would be to contact a specialized center. You should not delay with such malfunctions, as the consequences can be serious.
