VAZ 2114: the cigarette lighter does not work: TOP 4 causes and solutions to the problem

The cigarette lighter in a car has long ceased to be a means of lighting cigarettes. It is mainly used to power electronic devices. Charging a phone, connecting a DVR or radar detector, operating a non-standard cushion for heated seats - all this cannot be done if the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter does not work. This problem is not critical when operating the car, but it makes its use less comfortable.

Possible causes of malfunction

The most common reason why an electric lighter and a record player stop working at the same time is a blown fuse. The fuse link in VAZs of these models is common for the circuits of the car player, rear window heater, interior heater and electric lighter. If a short circuit or malfunction occurs in each of these devices, the insert is destroyed and all listed circuits are switched off.

The reasons why the cigarette lighter and radio fuse fails are often as follows:

  • destruction of the fuse element due to a short circuit or malfunction of devices connected through it;
  • contact failure in the safety panel (due to shaking, mechanical impact, etc.);
  • oxidation or burnout of contacts due to frequent power surges in the network;
  • burnout of the cigarette lighter lamp;
  • loose contact or burnt out spiral.

To determine the malfunction, you need to visually inspect and check with a tester the fuse-link and the devices whose circuits it disconnects.

Short circuit

A short circuit occurs when the contacts in the block are strongly oxidized and crossed due to frequent use of the cigarette lighter socket. This condition is indicated by a fuse blowing shortly after replacing it. To determine the short circuit zone, you need:

  1. Inspect the entire area for damage.
  2. Disconnect the section being tested from the main wiring.
  3. Use a multimeter to set the dialing mode.

If there is a short circuit in the area being tested, the device beeps.

Troubleshooting the cigarette lighter and radio

Before starting repairs, you must find the fuse. Open the rectangular hatch to the left of the steering column of vehicles of the indicated models. Inside it there is a block of all fuse links of automotive electrical wiring. The element in the socket marked F4 is responsible for the operation of the cigarette lighter and radio on the VAZ-2114.

If the fuse looks normal externally, you can determine the open circuit in this place with a simple screwdriver tester. The light on the probe lights up when the element is working. Otherwise, you need to find a new 20 A insert in the repair kit, remove the faulty part from the socket and insert a new one. In most cases the problem is resolved.

If the safety element is working or has been replaced, but the cigarette lighter and radio do not work on the VAZ-2114, do the following:

  1. Check the radio's own fuse. It turns off only the player, so the inspection is carried out in the case when, after replacing the element in the block, only the cigarette lighter and electrical equipment for heating work (general: body and heating system), but the tape recorder is silent. The burnout of its safety element may indicate a breakdown in the music console, so it is recommended to have it checked in a workshop.
  2. Inspect and check the contacts of the fuse socket in the block. This is done if, after replacing the insert, the functionality of all devices is not restored. Tighten loose contacts and clean them from carbon deposits.
  3. Inspect the cigarette lighter and check it with a tester. The peculiarity of the backlight lamp is its serial connection into the electrical circuit. Its burnout causes a break in the circuit of the entire device, and additional electrical appliances connected to the socket (for example, charging a phone) do not work. A working cigarette lighter will work after replacing the lamp.
  4. Burnout of the heating coil is determined with a tester by applying its probes to the cigarette lighter contacts. In a faulty device, the resistance scale (Ohm) will display the value 0 (short circuit) or 1 (burnout). Indirect evidence of a malfunction is the additional devices connected to the socket: if the coil of the cigarette lighter itself burns out, then its socket remains operational and the phone will charge normally. The malfunction can only be eliminated by replacing the device. When purchasing a new one, it is advisable to immediately check its performance.

Sometimes devices stop working due to a break in the wires running from the fuse block to the cigarette lighter or radio. But in this case, only 1 device is always turned off, and the rest, connected through the same element, operate normally.

Burnt out track in the mounting block

The track in the mounting block may burn out due to a short circuit resulting from the overlap of plus and minus. In this case, damage to the path may be accompanied by the appearance of a characteristic burnt smell and a slight haze. To troubleshoot the problem, you can try to re-solder the burnt track yourself - after clearing the old place, or replace the car's mounting block.

Additional Tips

The cigarette lighter socket in the VAZ-2115, as well as 14, 09 and other models is designed to power the following household appliances:

  • phone charger;
  • tablet or laptop;
  • pump for car wheels;
  • car vacuum cleaner and other household appliances with a special connector and the ability to be powered from a 12 V network.

When such devices are turned on for a long period of time or when moving, the contacts overheat and burn. Frequent use of the cigarette lighter socket leads to its rapid failure and can cause the fuse common with the radio to blow out.

If, after replacing fuse element F4, the functionality of the radio is not restored, the cause may be a blown starter fuse.

Replacing this insert (No. 14) sometimes quickly solves the problem. To prevent the starter safety insert from burning out, when performing work using the cigarette lighter while parked (for example, inflating a tire, cleaning the interior) or listening to the radio, you need to start the car to idle.

What is the Samara cigarette lighter of the fourteenth model

The design of the cigarette lighter for the VAZ-2114 is the same as for other cars. It consists of a glass (socket) and an insert. The socket is an iron cylinder, the walls of which are connected to the “ground” of the car. It is also equipped with a central terminal connected to the “plus” of the on-board circuit.

The main element of the insert is a nichrome spiral. It is enclosed in an iron case with a plastic button-handle. The insert is located inside the glass. In the off position, its body is in contact only with ground. When you press the button, the insert goes deeper into the glass, where one of the spiral contacts comes into contact with its central terminal, completing the circuit. It is held in the socket thanks to two special bimetallic “ears”. The current passing inside the spiral heats it red hot. For this reason, we can actually light a cigarette.

Why does the cigarette lighter on the VAZ 2114 not work?

The device turns off automatically. When the glass is heated to a certain temperature, the “ears” unclench and release the insert. In this case, a corresponding click is heard, notifying the driver that the device has turned off and is ready for use.

Car socket for electrical appliances

If we remove the insert from the socket, we get the best real 12 V car socket. In order to be able to receive electricity from it, we will need a special cylindrical plug. Our client's car electrical appliances listed above are equipped with exactly these plugs. Typically they have one central positive contact and two side (negative) contacts. Most plugs, with the intention of additionally protecting electrical appliances from overloads, are equipped with fuses that are placed inside them.

What can happen to the cigarette lighter

If the cigarette lighter in your VAZ-2114 does not work, you will prefer only two circumstances: either the integrity of the nichrome spiral is broken, or there is no voltage on the contacts of the glass. An ordinary auto tester, in other words, a multimeter turned on and working in voltmeter mode, will help you find the problem.

Attach one probe of the device to the positive terminal of the glass, and bring the second one to its body. The voltmeter should show battery voltage. Here you can simply change the insert with the spiral, and the cigarette lighter works like new again. If there is no voltage on the contacts, you need to continue to find the problem.

Fuse diagnostics

To check the fuse, carefully remove it from its seat, connect its leads to the probes of the multimeter and “ring”. If you are using a homemade tester made from a lamp and wires, connect the element being tested to the gap in one of the conductors. Connect the wires to the battery terminals. If the lamp lights up or the tester beeps to notify you that the fuse is intact, you should continue searching for the problem. Otherwise, simply replace the insert.

Never install a fuse with a different rated current, and especially do not use various “bugs”. This will jeopardize the entire on-board circuit of the vehicle. And from a fire safety point of view, this is unacceptable.

Where to look for a blown fuse

Has the cigarette lighter on your VAZ-2114 stopped working and there is no voltage at its contacts? Start your diagnosis by checking the fuse. To do this, you don’t have to disassemble anything, and the only tools you need are a multimeter in tester mode or a homemade tester made from a lamp and two wires. A natural question that arises in a situation when the VAZ-2114 cigarette lighter does not work: “Which fuse should be checked and where to look for it?”

In the Samara model fourteen, this protection element is located in the mounting block located in the engine compartment of the car. Open the hood and in the far right corner (looking at the windshield) you will see a black plastic box. This is the car's mounting block. The cigarette lighter fuse, depending on the modification of the car, may be designated as F4 or F7. It is designed for a maximum current of 30 A (in some modifications its rating can be 20 A).

Why does a fuse blow?

Having determined that the cigarette lighter on a VAZ-2114 does not work due to a blown fuse, it is worth thinking about the cause of this malfunction, because with normal operation of the on-board network, the fuse link can last for years. Its failure can be caused by a short circuit in the motor circuits of the interior heater, windshield washer, glove compartment light, or rear window heating relay. The fact is that the safety of all these circuits is ensured by the same fuse that ensures the safe operation of the cigarette lighter.

Another reason for the fuse link to burn out may be the inattention or negligence of the car owner himself when operating additional electrical appliances. If you recently vacuumed the interior of your car or inflated the tires with a compressor, connecting the equipment to a “car socket,” and then the VAZ-2114 cigarette lighter stopped working, you can be sure that it was these devices that contributed to the failure of the fuse.

Why does the cigarette lighter on the VAZ 2110 not work?

When using such devices, it is necessary to take into account the amount of current consumed and not allow it to be greater than that of the machine’s on-board network.

Recommendations from experts

As already mentioned, the safety element or fuse link is designed for long-term operation, but this element also fails. This most often occurs as a result of a short circuit in the conductive circuits of the vehicle itself. Another common reason for this fuse to blow is when the car owner uses the cigarette lighter as a car socket for additional electrical appliances.

Therefore, experts recommend that before connecting any devices to this low-power outlet, take into account the amount of current they consume. In no case should their power be allowed to be no more than 12 V.

What does the radio have to do with it?

There are situations when the radio and cigarette lighter of the VAZ-2114

simultaneously. You say: what connection could there be here? That's right, it shouldn't exist. But some “electricians” or car owners themselves connect the power of the radio to the cigarette lighter contacts. This is much easier than running wires to the battery terminals. So it turns out that when the cigarette lighter fuse blows, the radio stops working. In this case, it is better to contact a qualified auto electrician to correct the situation.

Repair work

Before removing the cigarette lighter on a Priora, Kalina or VAZ-2110, VAZ-2114 (the process is almost identical), you need to disassemble the tunnel. It may seem difficult, but it's actually not that bad. Take a Phillips screwdriver and remove the plastic trim around the handbrake. First, just in case, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. There are only three screws on the cover. After you unscrew them, look at the base of the lever. The plank that secures it to the floor hides the self-tapping screw. So, we will have to remove this bar, because this screw is used to fasten the tunnel, which we need to remove. Having freed the lower part, let's move on to the upper. Pull the tunnel towards you until it pops out of the latches in the area of the floor mats. Just without fanaticism, so as not to break them; you will see two more screws, one on each side. All that remains is to unscrew the cover of the gear shift knob, and the tunnel can be raised.

Actually, access to the cigarette lighter is now open. Squeeze it out, having first disconnected the wiring chip. It will pop out of the clips; Insert a new one in its place, insert the wiring into it and assemble the tunnel in the reverse order.

As you can see, there is nothing particularly difficult about removing the cigarette lighter on Kalina or Priora. This also applies to models 2110 and 2114. So if it breaks, don’t rush to go to the service center. Better replace it yourself. This will give you a good experience.

Cigarette lighter lamp

The reason that the cigarette lighter on the VAZ-2114 does not work may be a banal burnout of its backlight lamp. The fact is that the device circuit is designed in such a way that the voltage is supplied first to it, and only then goes to the positive contact of the glass.

In order to check the lamp, you will have to remove the so-called beard - the center console of the torpedo. It can be easily dismantled after unscrewing the four screws located on the sides (two on each side). When the console is removed, remove the lamp from its seat and “ring” the tester. If necessary, replace it and check operation by turning on the ignition and side lights of the vehicle. After replacing the lamp, test the cigarette lighter.

KEY-DOP

Why the cigarette lighter on a VAZ-2114 does not work: we are looking for a problem in the connectors and wiring

If all your efforts do not bring the desired result, check the connectors and wiring integrity. First of all, pay attention to how the “positive” wire and the “ground” wire are connected to the device glass. Remove the protective insulation from the contacts and inspect the connections. Restore them if necessary. After this, check the contacts of block X1 on the mounting block. The cigarette lighter power wires fit exactly to it. Unfasten it from the unit connector and inspect the contacts. If they show signs of oxidation, clean them and treat them with an anti-rust liquid (such as WD-40). Next, you should ring the wires going from the block to the cigarette lighter glass. They can be identified by color. If you find a broken wire, replace it locally, or better yet, replace the entire harness.

Sometimes motorists are faced with the fact that the cigarette lighter on a VAZ 2114 does not work. This seemingly minor problem can lead to very big difficulties on the road. Indeed, nowadays a car cigarette lighter not only serves its intended purpose, but is also used to connect various chargers (for example, for smartphones) and to power some electronic devices directly (for example, navigators).

Relay and fuse block diagrams for VAZ 2115

The Lada 2115 was first released in 1997 and finished production in 2012. Over such a long period of time, the electronic components of the car have changed significantly. It is not surprising that modifications of the mounting blocks have changed more than once, and with them the fuses of the VAZ 2115.

An old-style car with a carburetor required one installer in the engine compartment. With the advent of a new 8-valve injector, a second unit was needed, installed in the cabin under the dashboard. Some of the new relays were placed under the steering wheel during the 2007 and 2008 upgrades.

The design of the mounting block box has become more modern over time. To make life easier for drivers, a diagram was placed on the lid and tweezers were attached for replacing elements.

Causes of malfunction and their elimination

Speaking about why the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter may fail, it is worth noting the following, most likely reasons:

  • fuse is blown;
  • the fuse contacts or block sockets have oxidized;
  • the contact in the mounting block is broken;
  • the light bulb burned out;
  • a short circuit has occurred inside the device.

As you might guess, the search for a possible breakdown should start from the first point, namely the fuse. In order to do this, you should carefully inspect the common unit and find the required fuse. It is designated F4 and is designed for a current of 20 A.

After the fuse has been found, it should be carefully removed and checked using a tester (a regular “test” is sufficient). If during the check it turns out that the fuse is working, then it should be replaced and the search should continue. Otherwise, the fuse will have to be replaced with a new, similar one.

You should not replace the fuse with another one, but designed for a lower current strength, because in this case it will burn out much more often, even just when connecting powerful consumers.

If the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter fuse turns out to be working, then you should check the condition of its contacts, as well as the contacts of the socket into which it is inserted. If oxides are noticeable on them, they should be cleaned.

To do this, the contacts will need to be wiped with a cloth with kerosene or VD-40 or cleaned with very fine sandpaper. After completing this procedure, the fuse should be put back in place and the functionality of the cigarette lighter should be checked. If it turns out that it still does not work, the search should be continued.

The next thing you have to check are the contacts at the outlet of the mounting block (in the same place where the VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter fuse is located). These contacts are marked X1. If their fastening is loose, they should be carefully tightened. Such a seemingly trifle is very often the cause of a cigarette lighter malfunction.

After all the previous points have been checked, and the device still does not work, it is worth checking to see if the light bulb has burned out.

For this you will need:

  1. Remove the terminals from the battery.
  2. Unscrew the fastening elements of the cigarette lighter housing (it is held in place by two screws screwed into the central panel).
  3. Remove the plastic housing.
  4. Remove the light bulb.
  5. If it is faulty, replace it with a new, similar one.
  6. Reinstall the housing.
  7. Connect the terminals to the battery.

If after this simple procedure it turns out that the light bulb has nothing to do with it, all that remains is to check the cigarette lighter itself. Sometimes its petals close on each other, resulting in a malfunction. You can check this by using a multimeter and testing the device.

If it turns out that there is a short circuit, then the cigarette lighter will most likely have to be replaced (since it is extremely difficult to repair it, especially if the central spring is broken. It will be cheaper and easier to purchase a new one).

In order to extend the life of the cigarette lighter, you need to handle it carefully. The plugs inserted into it should be removed smoothly and without exerting lateral loads - they are the ones that lead to a short circuit inside the device itself.

Auto-assistance

In modern car operating conditions, drivers in most cases use the VAZ-2115 cigarette lighter socket not for its intended purpose, but as an outlet for connecting additional devices to it, as a power source, which are now sold in abundance in Russian automotive spare parts stores . But those drivers who do not think about the consequences of such actions often pay for it with repairs related to replacing the cigarette lighter socket or even repairing the mounting block.

The main reason for the failure of the cigarette lighter is that the plugs of additional devices, especially imported ones, through which they receive power, although slightly, still differ in diameter and the length of the protrusion of the central contact, to which the positive must be supplied from the current source.

If the central contact of the plug is slightly short, then when it is installed in the cigarette lighter socket, the antennae attached to the positive contact of the cigarette lighter socket move apart. This can lead to these antennae touching the body of the cigarette lighter socket, to which the wire going to the ground of the car is connected. As a result, a short circuit occurs and the fuse protecting this electrical circuit blows.

The driver, after turning on the headlights, sees that the lighting of the cigarette lighter socket is working and believes that after his previous actions, nothing happened to the electrical circuit of the cigarette lighter and tries to reconnect an additional device to this socket, but it refuses to work. The driver's first thought is that this device is out of order. But he is misled by the lighting of the cigarette lighter socket, which is powered through another fuse F10 (7.5 A), so this lamp is on, although the cigarette lighter fuse has already blown.

To replace a blown fuse, you will have to open the cover of the mounting block, which has symbols that help the driver quickly find the fuse he needs. But the problem is that there is no cigarette lighter symbol on it and the driver will have to look for a diagram of the location of the fuses in the mounting block, from which it will become clear that this electrical circuit is protected by fuse F7 (30A). If, when checking this fuse, it turns out that it is safe and sound, then the driver will need to look at another fuse F4 (20A), which will probably be blown. This is what will have to be replaced. But why F4 burned out and not F7, you need to ask automotive electricians.

How to protect the cigarette lighter from damage

In order to protect both the cigarette lighter itself and its electrical circuit from malfunctions, a number of rules should be followed. We have already talked about some of them (for example, careful handling).

It is also worth mentioning the following:

  • You can only install a similar fuse to replace the burnt one (it was said at the very beginning which fuse is responsible for the cigarette lighter on the VAZ 2114);
  • It is absolutely not advisable to install wires in the electrical circuit of the cigarette lighter (as well as in any other system of the car) using twisting alone, since most often it is this that leads to short circuits and fires. It’s better to take the time and tin all the twists (or use special terminals);

These simple tips will help you avoid mistakes and extend the life of this device.

Repair work

Before the procedure, you will need to stock up on the necessary tools:

In order to remove the cigarette lighter, it is necessary.

  1. Turn off the engine, open the hood and remove the negative terminal from the battery to eliminate the possibility of a short circuit and tripping the fuse on the VAZ 2114.
  2. Remove the protective panel located near the driver’s right foot by unscrewing the fastening screws.
  3. Disconnect the connection plug.
  4. Remove the backlight lamp along with the socket itself.
  5. Pry off the fixing tendrils inside (see photo). This will make the cigarette lighter with the fuse easier to remove.
  6. Pull out the metal element.

Installation of the part is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
