Features of the manual transmission device 2180-2181. Traction drive for gearbox control. The design of the gearbox (Gearbox) for the first front-wheel drive LADA cars was developed in the late 70s – early 80s. At that time, the leading manufacturers of mass-produced cars (FIAT, VOLKSWAGEN, HONDA, FORD) used a gearbox design with a lower location of the gear selection mechanism (GSM), a single rod for selecting and engaging gears. The switching drive is simple and cheap, with one working rod, or with working and reaction rods. A similar design is used on all LADA cars of the “Samara”, 2110, “Kalina”, “Priora” families to this day. Changes made to the method of blocking the reverse selection line, the design of the hinges, and optimizing the rigidity characteristics of the shift lever support have improved the situation, but do not ensure compliance with modern requirements.

What is a manual transmission cable: principle of operation and replacement of manual transmission cables

Even taking into account the fact that recently the demand for cars with automatic transmission has increased significantly, cars equipped with a manual transmission are still in demand.

A manual transmission is a device in which the driver selects gears manually (mechanically). In addition, this box belongs to a stepped gearbox, since the torque in it varies in steps.

There are several types of manual transmissions, which differ from each other in the design of the device and the method of implementing control. Note that modern transmissions on budget cars are cable (cable manual transmission). In this article we will look at what a manual transmission cable is, as well as how to change the manual transmission cable if certain malfunctions occur.

Shift mechanism and cable of a manual transmission

So, let's start with the features of different manual transmissions. Depending on the number of stages, such gearboxes can be divided into:

    four-speed gearboxes;

five-speed gearboxes;

  • six-speed gearboxes and higher.
  • Also, manual transmissions are performed according to two different schemes and are divided into:

  • two-shaft manual transmissions (boxes with primary, intermediate and secondary shafts are installed on front-wheel drive and rear-engine cars);
  • three-shaft gearboxes (boxes with drive and driven shafts are installed on rear-wheel drive vehicles).
  • the three-shaft manual transmission mechanism, consisting of a control lever and sliders with forks, is usually located on the gearbox body;
  • mechanism of a two-shaft manual transmission, consisting of a control lever connected by cables (rods) to the gear selection and gear levers. The levers, in turn, are connected to central gear selection rods with forks. The mechanism is located separately from the box body.

Next, we will dwell in more detail on the switching mechanism of a two-shaft box, where most often a cable connection is used in the switching mechanisms. The lever of a twin-shaft manual transmission, as mentioned above, is located remotely (on the steering column or in the area of the central tunnel) and is connected to the gearbox by cables or rods located separately from the gearbox.

Transmission cable: replacement

When using a manual transmission correctly, it is necessary not only to monitor the technical condition of this unit, but also to competently handle the gear shift lever directly. Since the main malfunctions in a manual transmission occur when the driver operates the shift lever incorrectly (sharp engagement or “jerking”).

In this case, switching mechanisms, synchronizers, shafts, gears, cables, etc. may fail. We must not forget that over time, the gear shift system, subjected to heavy loads, can also fail. As a result, there is unstable gear shifting, difficulty with shifting, etc.

So, let's look at how to change the manual transmission cable. By the way, replacing manual transmission cables is practically no different from replacing automatic transmission cables. The only difference is the number of cables. The sequence of actions when removing manual transmission control cables is as follows:

  • disconnect the wire from the negative terminal on the battery;
  • remove the floor tunnel lining, then use special pliers to grab the bent edge of the cable sheath fastening bracket and remove the bracket;
  • disconnect the gear shift cable end from the rocker lever pin;
  • Grab the spring cotter pin securing the cable tip with pliers and remove it from the hole in the rocker arm;
  • remove the battery mounting shelf;
  • Squeeze the cable end clamps with pliers and disconnect it from the lever on the manual transmission;
  • Remove the end of the cable sheath from the groove of the bracket on the mechanical box;
  • Disconnect the end of the gearshift cable from the manual transmission lever and remove the end of the cable sheath from the bracket;
  • Remove the “thermal shield” of the additional muffler and remove the cable holder from the hole in the base of the car body;
  • Remove the cables under the car;

Installation of new cables is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Also, upon completion, it is necessary to adjust the gearbox control drive. Please note that adjustments to the rocker and other mechanisms must be performed as efficiently as possible in order to achieve clear and easy gear engagement.

Reliability of manual transmission "Lada Granta"

The new manual transmission of the Lada Granta has become not only optimized, but also more reliable, and acceleration has also improved due to improvements. The engineers managed to rid it of unpleasant vibrations that were previously clearly felt on the gear shift knob and transmitted to the car body. At the same time, there are fewer backlashes, and gear changes and driving become more comfortable. But it is also worth noting that after modifications, the cost of a car in this configuration increased by an average of 5 thousand rubles.

However, a short period of time after the launch of the updated version of the car, many owners of the Granta cable manual transmission began to complain about the presence of noise (howling, humming). After receiving a large number of complaints, AvtoVAZ decided to modify its design again.

Lada Granta liftback

During the research, the car plant engineers were able to determine that noise in the gearbox occurs due to improper processing of the teeth of the gears and the main pair. After this, the design of the manual transmission on the Grant was modified again, and the processing technology of the metal parts used was also changed.

An updated, quieter manual transmission began production in July 2014; the noise level, due to further improvements, decreased by an average of 25 percent. At the same time, some car owners noted that this malfunction in the box could be eliminated by changing the oil in it to a higher quality one.

New gearbox "Grants" and "Kalina": traction to the cable

Many people know that the new VAZ-2181 gearbox has a cable drive, some have heard about multi-cone synchronizers. And some claim that this is an old Renault box, which was given to AVTOVAZ engineers to be torn to pieces. The author has collected enough information to dispel myths and talk about interesting details of the new unit. Computer graphics by Dmitry Gorev.

The new product, which is installed on the “Norma” and “Lux” versions, is based on the same gearbox that appeared on the VAZ-2108 and, with minor upgrades, has survived to this day. Its weaknesses are well known: difficult activation, large lever strokes, smeared switching pattern, low vibration comfort.

Figuring out what and how we could improve, we agreed on one thing: not to touch the gear part, namely the shafts, gears, and synchronizers. Otherwise, huge financial costs will be required to launch a new gearbox into production - without high-precision equipment, it will not be possible to ensure the proper quality of engagement, operation and synchronization.

So what's new in the box with the VAZ-2181 index?

Main elements of the VAZ-2181 gearbox:

1 - main gear drive gear;

Schemes and design of manual transmission 2181

Main elements of the VAZ-2181 gearbox:

1 – main gear drive gear; 2 – secondary shaft; 3 – input shaft; 4 – fifth gear fork; 5 – fork for selecting third and fourth gears; 6 – reverse light switch; 7 – clutch housing; 8 – gear shift mechanism; 9 – central lock.

Device of synchronizers of VAZ-2110 (A) and -2181 (B) boxes:

1 – first gear gear; 2 – intermediate rings; 3 – blocking ring; 4 – synchronizer clutch; 5 – synchronizer clutch hub; 6 – clamp; 7 – second gear gear.

Gear selection mechanism:

1 – gear selector levers; 2 – selector grid pin; 3 – selector grid; 4 – reverse locking mechanism; 5 – central three-dimensional plate.

What gearboxes did it come with?

The Lada Granta passenger car has been in mass production since March 2011; this model replaced the popular Samara series.

Initially, the car was equipped only with a VAZ-2180 five-speed manual transmission; later, automatic and robotic gearboxes were installed on the car.

The cable manual gearbox Lada Granta with index 2181 has been produced since October 2012; it was later modernized, since car owners had many quality complaints about it.

Each type of transmission installed on a Togliatti-made car has its own characteristic differences and weaknesses, the so-called “diseases”.

New manual transmission 2181 for Lada Granta

The serial "Lada Granta" on mechanics with a cable drive for selecting gears has replaced the old manual transmission, positioning itself as more reliable and easy to use. Improving the location of the gear change mechanism has significantly increased its reliability, and the dependence on the oil temperature in the crankcase has disappeared. The mineral oil in the new box has been replaced by semi-synthetic oil; now you need to fill it with not 3.3, but only 2.2 liters.

It is noteworthy that the mechanism directly responsible for selecting gears was developed completely from scratch by order of AvtoVAZ. This work was entrusted to the world famous engineering concern Schaeffler.

Due to the use of a selector plate in a modular design, the manual transmission on the Lada Granta provided a more precise change of speeds. The locking system has also become more reliable, preventing unintentional reverse gear.

The new device of the Lada Granta manual transmission with a cable drive made it possible to reduce the longitudinal travel of the gear shift lever by 32 mm. When changing speed, you now need to apply three times less effort, and it was also possible to reduce the free play in the longitudinal and transverse directions by half. The full pattern of movement of the handle was narrowed by 40 mm, and it was possible to eliminate its contact with the driver’s seat.

Manual transmission Lada Granta

The manual transmission installed on the Granta has a long history; in fact, it is the same 5-speed. gearbox, like the VAZ-2108, but repeatedly subject to serious modernization.

From the beginning of Granta's production, the car was equipped with a model 2180 gearbox, with a shift rod, with the gear selection mechanism located at the bottom (inside the body), the same transmission was installed on the first generation Lada Kalina.

A modernized gearbox with index 2181 appeared in 2012, and in the new transmission:

  • The gear shift rod was replaced with two cables;
  • the speed selection mechanism was moved upward, it began to be located outside the housing, not in oil, as it was before;
  • in 1st-2nd gear a multi-cone synchronizer appeared;
  • The clutch housing has been changed; only 2.2 liters of transmission oil are now poured into the box itself, and not 3.3 liters as before.

The use of cables instead of a rod reduced the level of vibration in the body, and in general, speeds began to be switched more clearly, without “searching” for the desired gear.

But this transmission had one characteristic problem - the 2181 gearbox of the first editions emitted a noticeable howl when the car was moving.

There were a lot of complaints from car owners, so AvtoVAZ decided to refine the unit, improving the technology for processing gears and shafts, and in the summer of 2014, Granta with a quieter manual transmission began to roll off the car plant’s assembly line.

What cars were fitted with the VAZ 2180 gearbox?

This transmission is installed on Lada models only with 16-valve engines:

Automatic transmission

“Automatic” was installed on the car of the Togliatti Automobile Plant from July 2012 to March 2015 - this is 4 speed. Automatic transmission from Japanese manufacturer Jatco.

Grant's four-speed automatic transmission - model JF414E, classic type, with a torque converter; similar units are equipped in Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki passenger cars.

This type of transmission on Granta is paired only with the 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 power unit.

The gearbox is highly reliable; with careful operation and timely maintenance, it can run up to 200 thousand km.

It is necessary to replace the transmission fluid every 60 thousand km; the manufacturer recommends filling with Nissan branded ATF EJ-1 or Matic-S oil.

The quality of the Lada Granta automatic transmission does not cause any major complaints; if the transmission requires repair, it is mainly due to the fault of the driver:

  • as a result of slipping, the clutches burn out;
  • after overheating, gaskets and seals begin to leak;
  • When you hit an obstacle, the automatic transmission pan breaks through, and then a thorough repair is definitely required.

Car owners have more complaints about the performance characteristics of an automatic transmission - increased fuel consumption, sluggish acceleration of the car, jerking during gear changes during dynamic driving.

Gearbox selection

All types of gearboxes on the Lada have their advantages and disadvantages, but even the domestically assembled Grant gearboxes do not cause very big problems for car owners.

If we do not take into account the slight noise of the mechanical part of the transmission, then we can say that the “robot” and “mechanics” are quite reliable, without pronounced characteristic “diseases”.

For those who like a leisurely drive and comfortable driving, an automatic transmission is best; there is only one drawback - increased gas consumption.

Although the manual transmission whines, the noise does not particularly affect its service life; during normal operation, it can travel about two hundred thousand kilometers without problems.

The electronics in the robotic box sometimes malfunction, and you need to get used to the specifics of driving a car with AMT.

Which transmission to choose for the Lada Granta is a personal matter for each motorist; a lot here depends on the preferences of the driver himself.

Which gearbox to choose for Lada Granta

All gearboxes that are equipped with Lada Granta cars have their own advantages and disadvantages. And whether it makes sense to replace a manual transmission with a Granta automatic transmission is up to the owner of the car to decide. The modified mechanics have become noticeably more convenient, it consumes gasoline economically and does not cause any special problems during operation.

Is it worth buying a Lada Granta with a manual transmission? It’s a personal choice for every motorist. Much depends on the individual preferences of the driver, as well as future operating conditions of the vehicle. Despite the still existing shortcomings, which are becoming less and less noticeable, AvtoVAZ engineers still managed to create an unpretentious and reliable unit.

Features of the manual transmission device 2180-2181.

There are a lot of points that are constantly below the oil level (selector rod seal, rod clamps, clamp and reverse sensor), which leads to leakage defects in these places. Solving the above problems without major design changes is almost impossible. Conflict between the geometric location of the gearbox control traction drive and the front suspension subframe and steering mechanism of class B vehicles.

Due to the use of a subframe with a lower steering mechanism in the design of promising cars, the installation of commercially produced gearboxes becomes impossible due to the conflict between the reaction and working rods of the PU with the subframe and very small static clearances with the steering mechanism. To solve the problem, it is necessary to move the profit center upward.

Clutch Ø 200…215 mm Upper location of the gear selection mechanism Levers for the cable drive of the gearbox control Multi-cone synchronizer for 1st and 2nd gears Gear selection mechanism.

The gear selection mechanism has a modular design and can be installed on the gearbox last, and also, if necessary, removed without disassembling the gearbox. The design of the gear selection mechanism includes a selector plate that provides a clear gear shift pattern, as well as a locking mechanism that prevents erroneous engagement of reverse gear when disengaging 5th gear. At the same time, the gear shift pattern has been changed.

The above allows you to: •provide a clearer and optimally sized gear shift pattern; •eliminate contact of the shift lever with the seat cushions due to a clearer pattern and the elimination of one gear selection stroke; •eliminate the need for special blocking of the reverse selection line in the control drive for retracting the lever (2110) or raising the sleeve (1118).

When using a 215 mm clutch with a significantly higher moment of inertia than for a 200 mm clutch, the use of multi-cone synchronizers is necessary for 1st and 2nd gears; the use of a single-cone synchronizer due to an increase in the diameter of the cone is impossible due to limitations on the available space (YES THIS seems like an ABSOLUTE FALSE! (from the newsletter of JSC AVTOVAZ)

We would like to add that the upgraded manual transmission is already installed on Lada Granta (except for the “standard” version) and first-generation Lada Kalina cars (in the future, the new manual transmission will be installed on second-generation Lada Kalina).

The 5-speed manual transmission VAZ 2180 or according to the factory index 21806 has been produced since 2013 and is installed on modifications of the Grant, Kalina, Priora models with 16-valve engines. This cable-driven transmission is designed for a torque of 160 Nm.

The modern family also includes 5-speed manual transmissions: 2181, 21807 and 21809.

Comparison of manual transmission 2180 and manual transmission 2181

The difference between the two boxes is significant:

  1. Instead of rigid rods, a cable is used (Japanese company Atsumitec). Due to this, vibration on the body and gearshift knob is reduced.
  2. Multi-cone synchronizers were installed in 1st and 2nd gears. This increases the service life of the components and reduces the effort when engaging gears.
  3. The clutch diameter was increased to 215 mm. In this regard, it was necessary to use a different crankcase, and place the starter not along the box, but along the engine.
  4. The bevel angle of the synchronizer teeth was reduced (from 125 to 100º), as well as the preload force (from 150 to 70 N). This made switching easier.
  5. The gear selection mechanism has been newly developed (Schaeffler Group).
  6. The gear selection mechanism was moved from bottom to top. This made it possible to eliminate oil leaks and make gear shifting easier in cold weather.
  7. The design of the gear selection mechanism includes a selector plate, providing a clear gear shift pattern.
  8. The mechanism includes a lock to prevent accidental reverse gear.
  9. The oil volume in the gearbox decreased from 3.3 liters to 2.2.
  10. From the factory, the gearbox is filled with semi-synthetic instead of mineral water.

Design features of cable gearbox 2180

Many people believe that this cable-driven box is based on the 2170 transmission, in principle it is, but in essence only gears and shafts remain from the old mechanics. Next, we will consider the main design changes in more detail and in the form of a single list:

  • The control mechanism moved from bottom to top, which made it possible to reduce the amount of lubrication and get rid of the unpleasant feature in the form of difficult switching in cold weather.
  • By replacing rigid rods with flexible cables, it was possible to significantly reduce vibrations transmitted to the gear shift lever, as well as noise during operation of the transmission.
  • As a result of the transition to multi-cone synchronizers for first and second gears, shifting comfort has improved, especially when driving in dense urban traffic.

What did you get?

The design of the gearbox was not only optimized and made more reliable, but also almost completely eliminated unpleasant vibrations on the lever and the car body. The backlash has become smaller and the shifts are clearer. It is worth noting that the use of a modernized gearbox on the Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 2 entailed an increase in the cost of these cars by an average of 5,000 rubles. By the way, the cable box is not installed on the Lada Priora; this car uses a 2180 manual transmission with rigid rods.

Let us remind you that according to reviews, the first copies of the modified gearbox were not entirely successful. The owners noticed a decrease in vibrations, but encountered a new problem: the box began to howl. After this, AVTOVAZ made changes to the design, but the sediment remained...
