Today in many countries of the world, including the Russian Federation, Renault, Logan, Sandero, Megan, Almera cars are found on the roads in large numbers. What might these models have in common? These machines are equipped with a K4M engine. This power unit has proven itself on the positive side.
Many experts, owners of these cars, characterize it as a reliable, economical engine. It is a logical continuation of such a line of engines as the K7M, which received minor design changes.
What is he like?
This power unit serves as the basis for several models of cars from different manufacturers. The K4M engine is a motor with a volume of 1600 cm 3, in which 16 valves are installed in the cylinder head. Gasoline is used as the fuel mixture; it is installed on the latest Renault models, as well as LadaLargus, NissanAlmera.
The main differences that the K4M motor has from the K7M version include a completely new version of the BC head. She received two camshafts separately for the intake and exhaust valves.
This is indicated by the inscription 16V on the car body, as well as on the cylinder head. If we consider the design of the cylinder block and crankshaft, they are the same for both versions of the engines. The Renault Logan 1.6 engine may have a phase regulator for models whose power is 115 hp, or without it for engines with lower power.
Owners note a slight decrease in the noise of the operating power unit, this is facilitated by hydraulic compensators in the gas distribution mechanism of the power unit.

A few words about the design of the motor
The design of the internal combustion engine has four cylinders, the working cycle consists of four cycles. It runs on gasoline, the power system has a unit for electronic control of fuel injection and ignition. The motor design has an in-line arrangement of working cylinders with pistons. Their rotation is carried out by one crankshaft, which also transmits rotation to two camshafts.
The motor cooling system is closed type and has forced circulation. Antifreeze is used as a coolant. The lubrication system was combined, that is, engine oil is supplied to friction points under pressure and also by splashing.
For the manufacture of the cylinder head of the 1.6 16 valve engine K4Mi, aluminum alloy is used. The drive mechanism of the gas distribution mechanism is designed in such a way that the rotation of the camshafts is carried out using a toothed belt.
Their rotation is transmitted through rocker arms and hydraulic compensators to the intake and exhaust valves. The simplicity of this design has one significant drawback. If the toothed belt breaks or is otherwise damaged in its working area, the valve is bent by the impacts of the pistons.
The valves of this motor have different sizes not only for the plates, but also for their lengths. The intake valves are large, both in terms of valve plates and their length. In this engine, the connecting rods are made of steel by forging. K4M pistons differ from K7M in their originality; they are produced with a diameter from 79.465 to 79.475 mm. The mass of such a product is approximately 450 grams.
Engine Renault K4M 1.6 liters
The production of Renault K4M 1.6 liter engines began in 1999. The motor is installed on mass budget models of the French brand - Logan, Sandero, Megane, Scenic, Clio, Duster. Since 2009, the assembly of power units has been established at AvtoVAZ.
Design features
The K4M four-cylinder in-line engine has a cast iron block and an aluminum cylinder head for a 16-valve timing belt. The camshafts are driven using a toothed belt.
The valves are equipped with hydraulic compensators, which eliminate the need to adjust the thermal gap. Intake phase shifters can only be found on engines with increased power (up to 115 hp). Such units save better fuel and emit fewer harmful substances into the atmosphere.
Fuel is supplied to the cylinders by distributed injection through the intake manifold.
A relatively simple and time-tested design allows the Renault K4M engine to remain one of the most reliable engines in its category. Filling with high-quality gasoline and following the maintenance schedule almost guarantee trouble-free operation of the unit. Its resource in this case can be 400 thousand km or more.

A little about engine maintenance
Any internal combustion engine, including K4M, requires periodic maintenance. The regulations for carrying out such work are described in detail in the vehicle’s operating instructions, but it would be useful to remind you about this again.
First of all, it should be recalled that special attention should be paid to the condition of the toothed belt, tension roller, and other elements of the timing mechanism drive. Otherwise, if these parts are damaged, the valves can be bent, and this is already a significant cost for repairing the power unit. These products should be replaced at 60 thousand km.
Important! It is especially dangerous for a toothed belt if engine oil gets on its surface; even the slightest leaks should be repaired immediately.
The next factor that requires close attention of the driver of a car with a K4M engine is the timely replacement of engine oil. The operating instructions for the vehicle also inform you in detail about the frequency of such an operation. When choosing an oil change according to the regulations, buy the brands recommended by the manufacturer.
According to the regulations, the engine oil is changed after 15 thousand kilometers or one year of operation of the vehicle. If you can find out what kind of oil to pour into the engine from the instructions, then where to perform such an operation or where to purchase lubricant is not indicated.
To avoid purchasing “counterfeit” products or ending up with “careless” mechanics, you should carefully consider the offers of motor lubricants and replacement workshops. It is best to purchase oils directly from dealers of lubricant manufacturers, and you can find out about car services from clients of such a company, read reviews on the Internet, and take advice from other car owners.
If you have little experience in servicing the machine. You can perform this operation on your own.
The oil used at the factory is 5W40 or 5W30, try to use the same for your car. There are many manufacturers of high-quality motor lubricants; choose them correctly and your car will “run” for a long period without problems. If the lubricant is changed together with an oil filter, approximately 4.8 liters of oil will be required; if without a filter, only 4.5 liters will be enough.
A few more engine maintenance tips
In order for the engine's life to be fully exhausted, we must not forget about its nutrition and breathing. This fully applies to the fuel and air filter in the gasoline supply system. According to the regulations, the air filter must be replaced after approximately 30 thousand km or after two years of operation.
But even here there may be some peculiarities, which depend on the conditions under which the machine is operated. If it occurs in highly dusty conditions, the air filter should be changed more often.
If we talk about gasoline, then there are pitfalls here too. Unfortunately, today you can still find gas stations that offer gasoline of questionable quality. The use of low-quality fuel can completely damage the power unit, which will entail significant financial costs for its restoration. The manufacturer recommends using gasoline with an octane number of at least 92 units.
Advice! If you have to add fuel at a gas station unknown to you, fill in the minimum amount so that you can drive to a gas station you know and top up with high-quality gasoline.

As far as I noticed, Renault dealers put Elf SXR engines in these engines. Considering that the Almera is heavier than the Logan, it might make sense to choose SXR 5W-40, although even A1 oils are allowed by the manual, so SXR 5W-30 should be suitable in any conditions. Considering the high price of Elf, you can, without a twinge of conscience, try any other oils with Renault RN 0710 or Ford M2C-913-C or -D approval. So, now in some stores there are discounts on Lukoil 5W-30, which is quite suitable. Re: Lukoil (Lukoil) general (Post by Flamie #169)
PS The volume of oil in the engine is quite large, so you can safely try oils with reduced ash content (ACEA C3 and C2).

Brief excursion
In numerous videos presented on the Internet, you can see this car, get acquainted with its characteristics and watch test drives. The spacious interior and large trunk are impressive, which is very useful for Russians - especially those who like to travel outside the city.
In 2010, Lada Largus was first presented to the public. After 2 years, the first car rolled off the assembly line and industrial production began. The car itself is a copy of the Dacia Logan MCV, presented under license for production at AvtoVAZ. Nowadays, several modifications of the Lada Largus are produced: with a station wagon body capable of accommodating 5 or 7 passengers, as well as with an all-metal body and a 2-seater saloon.
In the video you can see how the Lada Largus confidently moves along our roads. This became possible because the suspension, springs and shock absorbers are adapted to Russian road conditions and are designed for increased load capacity. Increased ground clearance also contributes to good cross-country ability.
All information on choosing engine oil for Lada Largus
When the production of K4M motors was localized, the plant was first supplied with one material - SHELL PC 1448, 0W30. Then barrels with another material were noticed - LUKOIL Genesis RN 5W40. According to official information, the engine is filled with ELF SOLARIS RNX oil. The latter belongs to the 5W30 class.
The most expensive material for refilling K4M
By analyzing all the information, you can choose which oil to pour into the Lada Largus engine with 16 valves. Are there any other options:
- Before localization, it was stated that K4M engines were filled with SHELL PC 1021 oil (viscosity was not specified);
- Answer received from the support service: the first filling material for all Largus engines is ELF EXCELLIUM NF 5W40 oil. The date of receipt of the response is December 2, 2014.
So there are five different brands named here. And all this is the first refueling!
Renault company recommendations (motor oil regulations)
It's no secret that the Lada Largus is a redesigned Renault Logan station wagon. When buying a Renault car, everything looks simpler than with Largus:
- From the factory, the K4M engine is filled with ELF Excellium LDX oil. Its viscosity is 5W40 (not 5W30);
- ELF Evolution SXR with a viscosity of 5 would be recommended . 5W30 is for 8 valves.
oil with the index “ W30 ” will be less viscous than “ W40 ”. And for hydraulic compensators you need just the second one.
You can follow Reno's recommendations and everything will be fine.
The owners themselves are still arguing about what kind of oil to pour into the Lada Largus engine - 5W/30 or 5W/40. And if we talk about 16 valves, there is no consensus yet.
Subtotal
All options for “factory” refueling:
- SHELL: brand PC 1448 (0W30), PC 1021 (presumably 0W30);
- ELF: brand SOLARIS RNX (5W30), EXCELLIUM NF (5W40), EVOLUTION SXR (5W40);
- Russian industry: LUKOIL GENESIS RN (5W40).
Renault company recommendations (for replacement): ELF EVOLUTION SXR (5W40).
What kind of oil does VAZ recommend for a 16-valve valve?
Let's see what they say in the instruction manual. Brands and marks are not named here.
Instructions for Lada Largus
Only viscosity classes are given, as well as quality classes and ash content (ACEA).
The choice is made based on the conditions: class “0W” is suitable for low temperatures, and “5W” is suitable for moderately low temperatures. The choice between “W30” and “W40” has already been discussed above.
The list does not include 0W50 viscosity grade. Materials that meet such high requirements simply do not exist. The quality classes indicated are standard, and the “best” of them is API SN. Well, the “ash content” should be “medium” - all ACEA class names begin with the letter A.
The choice of motorists themselves
The reader has probably already found out what kind of oil to pour into the Lada Largus engine. Six different options were named. There are other, “less standard” replacements:
- Lukoil Lux Synthetic SN, 5W40;
- SHELL Helix Ultra, 5W40 (many fakes);
- ELF EVOLUTION 900 FT, 0W30;
- TEXACO Havoline Energy, 5W30;
- Nissan Oil, 5W40 (factory option for the Almera sedan);
- GM Dexos 2, 5W30.
Device and feature
An engine marked K4M is a highly technical unit with the highest features. The first production of the unit began back in 1999. The motor design is quite common and understandable. The only difference from its younger brother K7M is that there are two camshafts in the cylinder head.
Also, the engine is much quieter, as hydraulic compensators are installed. The engine is equipped with sixteen valves, which increases power properties and slightly reduces fuel consumption. The average engine life is 350,000 - 400,000 km.
Technical properties of K4M
The French engine was also equipped with gearboxes from Renault cars with JR5 or Jh4 markings, which were also installed on Logan.
With normal and timely maintenance, the Largus 16 cl. 1.6 liters can last quite a long time, to be more precise up to 500,000 km. According to the manufacturer's standards, as well as service manuals, the engine must undergo scheduled maintenance every 10,000 - 12,000 km; here it is not so important what fuel the unit is operated on.
Let's look at what operations are provided for during scheduled maintenance of the Largus engine, which has a 16-valve mechanism:
- Oil change.
- Changing the oil filter.
- Changing the air filter element.
- Scheduled fuel filter change.
- Check spark plugs.
- Checking electrical systems, including the electrical engine control unit.
Changing the engine oil: method of action
The first step is to decide what kind of oil to pour into Largus. The manufacturer of engines for Largus - Renault recommends filling
Only high-quality motor oil is used in engines, specifically ELF EXCELLIUM NF 5W40. If you believe the manufacturer, then this particular motor oil is poured into cars that leave the assembly line. Alas, based on practice, it is rare that this particular brand of lubricating water is poured into services.
For Lada Largus there is also a list of recommended engine oils, which can be filled instead of ELF EXCELLIUM NF 5W40. In fact, some motorists, when carrying out maintenance on their own, fill in at least some other semi-synthetic oil , which is not inferior in quality.
Technical features of K4M
The monolithic cylinder block of the Renault K4M engine is made of cast iron. It has an in-line arrangement of four cylinders. The piston group is reinforced with steel inserts in the area where the compression rings are installed. The fixing piston pins are pressed tightly into the upper heads of the connecting rods, and are installed in the piston bosses with a gap. The piston weight is 450 grams, with a diameter of 79.465 - 79.475 and a compression height of 31.7 mm. The internal combustion engine uses forged steel connecting rods with the following dimensions (mm):
- 128 – length
- 47.612 – 47.627 – bottom head hole diameter
- 19.945 – 19.958 – diameter of the upper head hole.
K4M without valve cover
The cylinder head is made of aluminum. A belt is used to drive the timing mechanism. The engine is equipped with sixteen valves and two lightweight steel camshafts. Cams are pressed onto them.
The intake and exhaust valve plates are manufactured with a diameter of 32.5 and 28 mm, respectively. The length of the rods in millimeters is:
- 109.32 – intake
- 107.64 – exhaust valve.
Pistons with connecting rods K4M
In this case, the diameter of the rods is the same and equals 5.5 mm.
Compliance with the established criteria for environmental standards is ensured through the use of a phase regulator.
What engine oil is best to put into the Lada Largus engine in the summer?
The engine is the heart of the car, so it is important to know which engine oil is best to fill
into the Lada Largus engine in summer and winter. At the factory, 5.5 liters are poured into the Lada Largus engine. Lukoil 10W30 or Shell 5W-30 motor oil. However, for daily use and comfortable driving, 4-4.5 liters is enough. oils If you are unable to purchase motor oil of the above brand, of course fill in ELF 5W40, ZIC-SM-5V40 or Shell Ultra E 5W30.
The manufacturer advises changing the oil every 15,000 km. If the Lada Largus undergoes intensive operation, the engine oil is changed earlier. The oil filter is also changed.
Lada Largus engine oil
The overall creation of a small car jointly produced by AvtoVAZ and Renault began in 2012. The model was developed on the Nissan B0 platform and intended for the Russian market as an adaptation of the Dacia Logan I (the Sandero, Duster and a whole generation of Nissan cars were created on the same platform). To adapt Largus to the peculiarities of Russian roads and climate, the unique suspension was changed and slightly updated with arches. For those people who don’t really delve into the technical data, Largus from the outside looks like our client remains the same Logan, topped with the AvtoVAZ logo familiar to everyone.
Initially, the production model is equipped with 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engines, expectedly borrowed from Logan. These are 8- and 16-valve units with a power of 86 and 102-105 hp. and with an average mixed fuel consumption of 7.2.7 and 8.4 liters per 100 km, respectively. Very affordable speed – up to 165 km/h and the model is positioned by the manufacturer specifically as a machine for performing work. Information about the types of oil to be filled is indicated below.
Lada Largus is available in several modifications. This is a cargo version of the F90, a passenger version of the R90 and Cross, characterized by increased ground clearance and a stylish interior. The car is an economical model, which, in general, is known for the quality of its assembly and good driving characteristics. However, its main advantage in the competitive struggle among small-class cars is its ability to transport large cargo thanks to a fairly capacious trunk. In addition, if necessary, Largus can be easily converted into a van (you only need to remove the rear seats, leaving only the front ones). He has the following significant feature that gaming slots have - the low price of almost all components of the machine, which makes repairs cheap and quick.
Engine Renault K7M 710/800 1.6 8V 86 hp
- What kind of engine oil is filled from the factory (original): Synthetic 5W30
- Oil types (by viscosity): 5W-30, 5W-40
- How many l. engine oil (total volume): 4.5 l.

Service
Maintenance of the K4M engine consists of timely replacement of consumables. They change with the following frequency, expressed in kilometers:
K4M from the side of timing belts and attachments
- 15000 – engine oil, oil and air filter
- 30000 – spark plugs
- 60000 – replacement of the attachment belt and timing belt
- 90,000 – from the moment of purchase, then the coolant is changed every 60 thousand.
After another fifteen thousand kilometers, you should check the condition of the attachment belt, as well as the tightness of the cooling system and exhaust gas circuits. Adjustment of valves on the K4M power unit is not required, since there are hydraulic compensators.

What kind of oil should I put in Lada Largus?
Domestic manufacturers offer a huge number of types of motor oils and technical fluids for cars, but what kind of oil should I fill in the Lada Largus? During the warranty period, they are changed at service stations where they use brands of lubricants recommended by the manufacturer. At the end of the warranty, the car owner, at his own professional discretion, chooses the engine oil
and technical water for your own car, taking into account the conditions of its operation. When always choosing a brand of oil or water, you need to be guided by the manufacturer’s requirements. If the car is not new, but purchased used, responsibility for choosing consumables falls on the owner.
What to look for when choosing
Before pouring oil into the Lada Largus, you need to remember that no matter what lubricant is used, there is no fundamental difference in the number of valves - it “works” equally well on both engine options.
Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to decide on the composition. This definition depends on the operating mode of Largus. If the car will be used daily, then it is worth pouring into such a car oil created on the basis of conventional or hard hydrocracking.
In simple terms, we are talking about synthetic lubricant and semi-synthetic lubricant, respectively. You can also use mineral oil, but you will have to change it more often.
If Lada Largus is driven at high speeds, then it is necessary to use lubricants based on esters or PAO. As for mineral oils, they are completely unsuitable for such operating modes.
Disadvantages and weaknesses of K4M
When operating the Renault K4M engine, the following disadvantages occur:
- Poor-quality ignition coils - their breakdown leads to the fact that the power plant begins to trip. The first thing to check is the spark plugs, but more often than not, the problem lies in one of the ignition coils.
- Unstable speed - can occur due to many reasons, but most often floating speed occurs due to a dirty throttle valve, air leaks from the throttle assembly, or failed sensors.
K4M cylinder block
- Unreliable phase regulator - very often the device breaks down even before the end of the warranty period.
- Coolant and oil leaks - weak points for leakage are the pump, crankshaft oil seal and cylinder head gasket.
- Failure of the crankshaft pulley due to destruction of the damper spring. The problem is observed on Spanish-assembled engines.
A broken timing belt is accompanied by bending of the valves as a result of contact with the pistons. The problem manifests itself in winter due to design flaws. Snow swept into the engine compartment settles on the protective casing of the gas distribution mechanism. Subsequently, it melts, and water falls on the lower part of the belt. After stopping the car, the accumulated moisture sets in, which leads to the belt slipping when starting a cold power plant.
Crankshaft K4M
Also, among the disadvantages of the Renault K4M engine, we highlight:
- deterioration in performance when using low-quality AI-92 gasoline (the engine cannot be blamed for this)
- low traction, which is not enough for confident overtaking
- high price and low availability of spare parts.
What else do you need?
During this operation, the oil filter is also replaced. You need to purchase a filter with identification number 7700274177 or 8200768913, they are interchangeable and original for this car.
But you can buy any filter, the main thing is that it is from a well-known manufacturer and also fits the overall dimensions.
During work, it is also recommended to replace the drain plug gasket. The original gasket has article number 11026 5505R
But if you couldn’t get one, then instead of the old gasket you can install a regular copper gasket of the appropriate diameter.
None Recently, service stations began to indicate that when changing, it is necessary to flush the engine.
It really needs to be done, but only if oil from another manufacturer will be used. If the lubricant manufacturer does not change, then flushing is not necessary.
Selecting consumables to replace
From the factory, the 8-valve valve on the Lada Largus will be filled with ELF SOLARIS RNX material. The viscosity of the material is 5W30. There was another option - LUKOIL Genesis RN 5W40. Renault pours ELF oil into its 8-valve valves: brand – Excellium NF, viscosity – 5W40. This company recommends using another material - ELF Evolution SXR 5W30.
Instead of "ELF SXR" there is now "ELF 900 SXR"
By the way, now the number 900 has been added to the name ELF.
According to VAZ recommendations, viscosity is chosen depending on the temperature: 0W30 for the North, 5W30 for Siberia, and there is also a viscosity class 10W40. API quality level – any of three: SL, SM, SN. Ash content according to ACEA – from A1 to A5.
Oil filter and its choice for an 8-valve valve
SOGEFI brand oil filters are supplied to Renault factories. All filters suitable for the K7M motor are marked as follows - 7700274177. And on the same lines they produce substitute analogues: LS218 (Purflux brand), PH11774 (FRAM), FT6129 (Fiaam).
Standard and Advanced Filter
There is also an improved version of the filter. It is designated by numbers 8200768913. List of analogues: Purflux LS932, Fiaam FT5902, FRAM PH5796. We have a more complete list too.
Metal parts
The crankcase drain hole is closed with a metal plug. The article numbers for this part are 7703075348, 7703075210, 7703075347 and 7903075033. There is a washer under the plug. It is designated as follows: 110265505R, 8200641648, 7703062062.
Two options for spacers
In the last, that is, in the third case, we are talking about a copper ring. Washers with rubber bands include the first and second articles.
Tuning
To increase the power of the Renault K4M engine up to 120 horsepower, you can do chip tuning. This will require:
- install an exhaust system without a catalyst
- mount drivetech 10 phase 270 camshafts.
K4M cylinder head without cover
To achieve higher power levels, significant modernization of the K4M engine will be required. Tuning can be done using a PK-23 compressor or a TD04 turbine.
Using the first option, you can get power ranging from 140 to 150 hp. The boost pressure should not exceed 0.5 Bar, due to the low compression ratio of the K4M engine. You will also need to make a custom kit; there are no ready-made solutions. You will need to install a direct-flow exhaust, camshafts (phase 270-280), an Abit ECU and injectors, suitable from the Volga.
The second option for tuning the K4M engine is identical, except for the use of a turbine.
Its implementation will make it possible to achieve a power of slightly more than 150 hp. K4M under the hood of Nissan Almera G15
