Stages of replacing lubricant Peugeot 308

Typically, replacing the lubricant is performed during routine maintenance. But in some cases, the oil is changed before it reaches the end of its service life, for example, after repairs have been carried out that involve draining.

Let's look at the replacement using the example of a Peugeot 308 with an EP6 (EP3) engine, since this engine is the most popular. But the instructions and the process itself are also applicable to other power plants; differences may only be in the location of some elements.

During its release, this model managed to change several generations, as well as restylings:

  • Peugeot 308 T7, first generation (Peugeot 308 T7, Restyling);
  • Peugeot 308 T9, second generation (Peugeot 308 T9, Restyling).

The EP6 (EP3) engine was installed not only in Peugeot cars, but also in Citroen, BMW, and Mini Cooper. There are many variations of this power plant, but the 1.6 120 hp is considered more popular in our country.

Draining waste fluid

To drain the lubricating fluid, we drive the Peugeot 308 onto a lift or pit. Now, if additional protection is installed, then remove it. If it is a standard one, then you don’t have to remove it; it has special technological holes.

The preparatory steps have been completed and we proceed directly to the draining. We will carry out all operations using the EP6 1.6 liter engine as an example; with other engines the process will be similar:

  1. Raise the hood, then find the filler neck on the engine and unscrew the plug (Fig. 1).

  2. There, under the hood in front of the engine, there is a plastic housing for the filter element. We unscrew it using a 27 socket (Fig. 2). To remove the filter, you need to disconnect and remove the air duct; the removal process will be a little lower.

  3. Now we go down under the car and place a waste container in the drainage area. You can use a cut canister or an old bucket.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug using a size 8 hexagon (Fig. 3).

  5. On some engines, the drain plug on the pan is not located at the lowest point, so there is still about 200-300 milliliters of waste remaining in it. To remove them, you can use a rubber bulb or a syringe with a hose attached to it (Fig. 4).

This method produces the most complete drainage of old engine oil. Despite the seemingly complex process, there should not be any particular difficulties.

Replacing the oil filter

To gain access to the oil filter, perform the following operation:

  1. We unscrew the clamp and move the pipe to the side, and also remove the decorative trim upwards, after first pressing the latch (Fig. 5).

  2. Now we take out the entire structure upwards, having first felt with the right side the plastic latch, which must be pressed (Fig. 6).

  3. We unscrew the filter housing using a long wrench and a 27 socket. It is advisable to place a rag underneath so that drops of oil do not fall on the engine (Fig. 7).

Flushing the lubrication system

Engine flushing on a Peugeot 308 should only be carried out in exceptional cases, which include:

  1. Purchasing a used car when you cannot be sure of the quality and regularity of lubricant replacements.
  2. During operation, the service replacement interval was repeatedly exceeded.
  3. Engine operation with constant frequent overheating, which contributes to coking and other deposits.
  4. In cases of switching to another type of oil, for example from synthetic to semi-synthetic.

There are several types of flushes for the Peugeot 308 engine:

  • Five- or seven-minute, capable of cleaning even the most difficult deposits. They must be used very carefully and strictly follow the instructions printed on the packaging. It is recommended to use them only when absolutely necessary. Since there is a high probability of causing premature wear of the sealing seals. The absence of aggressive additives in the wash composition gently cleans the engine, but is not able to remove heavy contaminants.
  • Regular oil that you are going to use when changing. This method is not so popular due to its high cost.

Before flushing your Peugeot 308, you should weigh all the pros and cons. And also understand that it will not be possible to completely drain the liquid. Some of it will remain in the channels, which will then mix with the new oil.

Installing a filter, filling in new engine fluid

If the Peugeot 308 lubrication system is sealed and does not require repair work to eliminate leaks, you can proceed to adding fresh oil.   1. Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
  2. We tighten and replace the housing with the new filter element. First, do not forget to replace the rubber o-ring from the kit. It is advisable to lubricate the ring a little with oil.
  3. Pour new oil into the filler neck.
  4. We check the level on the dipstick; it should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  5. We start the engine, let it run for 10-15 seconds, then turn it off.
  6. After 5 minutes, check the level with a dipstick and top up if necessary.

Resetting the interservice oil change counter

When changing the engine oil yourself, there is a need to reset the service interval, which is displayed on the instrument panel. For Peugeot 308 cars, you must do the following:

  1. Turn the key to the ON position.
  2. The indicator on the instrument panel will light up.
  3. Under the display, click on the right button, next to which “wrench/000” is drawn.
  4. Continue holding the button and turn the key to turn on the ignition.
  5. Hold the button until the numbers from 10 to 0 appear on the display.

Typical problems and malfunctions

With timely maintenance, serious breakdowns of EP series units begin to appear after 100 thousand kilometers, even with careful operation and diagnostics of consumables.
