LADA Kalina is a brand of the group, represented on the market since 2004 with budget small-class cars with front-wheel drive. The first generation was produced until 2013 in basic hatchback and station wagon versions; The second generation, starting from 2013, received a modernized body in the “Cross” and “Sport” versions, a 16-valve 1.6-liter engine with a four-speed automatic transmission and a new transmission with anti-roll bar, modified spring and shock absorber suspension design.
Over the entire production period, Lada Kalina was offered in three main trim levels, which were modified in accordance with European safety standards from Euro-2 to Euro-4.
“Standard” package
Lada Kalina in the “Standard” category met the requirements of Euro-2, 3, was equipped with an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine and was equipped with the following options:
- Safety: inertial seat belts with three-point height adjustment, reinforced door sides, electrically adjusted headlights, automatic reverse locking.
- Interior: fabric seat covers with upholstery of panels and door elements made of artificial leather, height adjustment of the steering column, rear and windshield windows with athermal coating, separate rear seats, on-board computer with the ability to diagnose the engine, ignition switch indicator, side lights and instruments, additional heating system air filtration.
- Anti-theft system: built-in immobilizer, remote car alarm with one-way communication, “one key” function for central locking, ignition and door locking, electronic throttle pedal drive of the “E-gas” type.
- Exterior: stamped R13 wheels, front and rear bumpers painted in body color, a full-size spare wheel.
Installation of additional equipment in the basic configuration was offered by dealerships and showrooms at the request of the client.
Appearance
The exterior, it must be admitted, has not undergone radical changes. However, the body is equipped with new design skirts on the sides. They are made of plastic, but this has not reduced their reliability in any way, since the material was used of the highest quality - it is extremely resistant to mechanical damage.
However, the updated Kalina has a noticeable increase in plastic elements on the external surfaces. It is definitely difficult to consider this as an advantage or disadvantage. Therefore, each buyer will decide in his own time whether he likes it or not. The rear doors now have nameplates that are purely decorative. In addition, there are fasteners mounted on the roof that will allow you to transport small luggage there if necessary.
In general, the hatchback, as well as other models, now having a fairly high ground clearance, is increasingly reminiscent of an SUV and can easily drive not only on roads, but also over rough terrain.
In any case, the general trend is being monitored - the designers of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant are gradually turning Kalina into a quite high-quality, and what is important - budget crossover. In particular, the design was changed:
- pendants;
- chassis;
- shock absorbers.
It is difficult to say with certainty how this transformation will end, but there is every reason to be cautiously optimistic.
The high ground clearance, among other things, gave Kalina a completely new look. She now looks noticeably more aggressive. Such metamorphoses will certainly appeal to fans of SUVs. This and its relatively low cost make this model noticeably more attractive. In addition, it is possible to choose either front- or rear-wheel drive at your discretion.
“Comfort” package
Lada Kalina in the “Comfort” configuration was equipped with a choice of 16-valve engines of 1.4 and 1.6 liters of Euro-3 class:
- Safety: to all options of the basic “Standard” version, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), a choice of automatic or manual transmission, airbags for the driver and front passenger (Airbag), and daytime running lights were added.
- Interior: improved seat upholstery and front panel (tapestry), built-in automatic climate control with temperature sensors, a two-way audio system with speakers in the front doors and a radio depending on the year of manufacture, electric power steering, steering wheel height adjustment, instrument indicator adjustment according to color and brightness, expanded functions of the on-board computer with the ability to connect additional auto electronics and control options, an additional mirror in the visor on the passenger side.
- Anti-theft system: two-way or one-way at the client’s choice; central locking, standard immobilizer.
- Exterior: R14 or R15 wheels to choose from, in the second generation in the “Sport” and “Cross” versions since 2013, the ability to install diameters R16, R17, rigid anti-roll bar, reinforced body safety elements, arch moldings and increased ground clearance up to 23 mm.
With the release of the second generation after 2013, the “Active Drive” category became available, on which a forced 16-valve engine with increased power was installed. The “Sport” and “Cross” versions were equipped with some options from the maximum luxury series: heated seats, rain and light sensors, a passenger airbag and improved interior trim.
Features of the Lada Kalina interior
The concept of a new generation of “people’s” car was created with an emphasis on ease of use. Getting into the car is made more comfortable thanks to wide-opening doors and enlarged doorways. The front seats for driver and passenger have become more anatomical. Access to all important vehicle components is designed in accordance with European standards.
Everything is within the driver's reach, and he doesn't have to reach for anything. The exterior mirrors of the Lada Kalina Station wagon 2 have become larger, allowing for increased rear visibility. Now the instrument panel is much more contrasting, and the center console is more informative. The multimedia panel is equipped with a 7-inch screen, which provides flexible instrument settings.
Thanks to the high ceilings, the Kalina 2 station wagon can comfortably accommodate a passenger of any height. The vibroacoustic characteristics of the body, interior and power unit have been modernized and improved. This made it possible to reduce the level of squeaks and noises that periodically arose when crossing difficult terrain.
Many useful attributes have been added to the car's interior. At the top of the center console there is a special compartment for storing small items and items. Compared to the previous generation of the model, the glove compartment has increased significantly. The parking brake housing has a folding design, which, when opened, acts as a cup holder for rear passengers.
All plastic in the cabin has black and gray shades. When choosing a certain configuration, chrome inserts are also added, adding prestige to the interior. The luggage compartment of the Kalina 2 station wagon is equipped with updated shelf supports, which provide expanded usable area and capacity for large cargo.
Safety is achieved thanks to a reinforced body frame, which ensures that the station wagon model complies with European and Russian standards.
“Luxe” package
Lada Kalina in the maximum “Lux” configuration complies with Euro-3, Euro-4 safety standards and is equipped with a 16-valve 1.6-liter unit with a capacity of 106 hp. There is also a choice of the “NFR” version with an improved 1.6 engine with a capacity of 136 hp:
- Safety: in addition to all the options of the previous trim levels, the car is equipped with ABS systems with reverse locking, ESP (electronic stability control system), TCS (traction control system with electronic control of load distribution on hydraulics), a five-speed manual transmission with a cable shift mechanism or four-speed automatic transmission, heated front mirrors with electric drive, rain sensor.
- Interior: high-quality seat upholstery (velvet, velor) with leather inserts on the doors and dashboard, standard head unit (CD+MP3+two-way audio system) with a touch screen and on-board computer functions, headrests on passenger seats, electric windows on all doors, climate control -control with outside temperature sensor, cruise control, heated front seats.
- Anti-theft system: security system with two-way communication, automatic remote start based on temperature, time, function for raising the windows after locking the doors, central locking, immobilizer, diagnostics of engine systems after the ignition is turned off.
- Exterior: moldings on the arches and front bumper, running lights and fog lights, new grille design.
When the hidden functions of the on-board computer are activated, the luxury version of Kalina has a full set of controls for all systems with the ability to install additional sensors (tire pressure, automatic light control, pre-start engine with diagnostics).
The second generation of Lada Kalina was updated with various types of gearboxes, which became available in all trim levels. Since 2013, the station wagon version has been producing an updated “Cross” modification with a robotic gearbox and increased engine power to 106 hp. The modernization also affected the suspension: in addition to the reinforced anti-roll bar of the front part, the rear axle design received a semi-independent spring type with new shock absorbers and spring mounting. In the “Luxe” configuration, all Lada cars are equipped with front ventilated disc brakes.
The Lux modification 014-042 will cost from 425 to 432 thousand rubles.

In addition to the options and additional equipment described above, the top version will only have an automatic transmission. And the most important innovation in this modification is the installation of an ESC stability control system. Prices vary depending on body type. The power unit here will be the long-known VAZ 21126 with a capacity of 98 horsepower.
AvtoVAZ also reported that not only Kalina received an update, but also Priora, in just a few months, will be presented to the general public with a completely new design. They plan to highlight this model no earlier than the end of the year. All that remains is to believe the words of the manufacturer’s officials and wait for the appearance of new domestic cars.

Today Lada Kalina is offered in three main trim levels: standard, normal, luxury. The basic configuration of Lada Kalina 2 “standard” has two versions. The average “norm” has 5 versions, and the “luxury” has 6 versions. Today we’ll try to figure out how these versions differ.
The most affordable configuration of the Lada Kalina “standard” has versions 21921-40-010 and 1. The main difference is the presence of a modernized suspension and central locking; in all other respects the equipment is identical. The difference in price is several thousand rubles. A cheaper package without improved suspension costs 327,500 rubles. You will have to pay more for the presence of central locking and an upgraded suspension; the price of this version is 330,500 rubles. A quick glance at the line of new Lada Kalinas did not reveal any significant changes. Upon closer inspection, door moldings, alloy wheels and black painted door frames were noticed. These are the main differences between the new “Norma+” and “Lux” trim levels from the previous “Standard” and “Norma”. Moreover, any version can be equipped with either an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine or a 16-valve 1.4-liter engine. It is worth noting that cars with different engines are identical on the outside.

On the first day of testing, we had to drive 300 km to the Black Stones recreation center, not far from the city of Sortavala. First, we chose a car with a completely new 1.4 liter engine, which develops 90 hp. The engineers of the AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center managed to achieve this by lightening the connecting rod and piston group and increasing the length of the connecting rod. The result was a reduction in mechanical losses and, as a result, an increase in power. True, to achieve tolerable dynamics, like any other small engine, it has to be thoroughly “twisted” - there is practically no thrust at the bottom. Peak power is reached at 5600 min-1, and at 4000 min-1 a maximum torque of 130 Nm develops. The engine spins up to 6500 rpm, but there is no point in this. The acceleration intensity drops significantly as the maximum power characteristics are overcome at 5600–5800 min-1. As for acoustic comfort, after 100–120 km/h you have to listen to your interlocutor. Aerodynamic noise is kept to a minimum, but the engine hum cannot be eliminated.

On the section between the settlements of Palalahta and Leppäsilta, which is approximately 70 km, there is a high-speed highway with gentle, long turns and long straights. This area was ideal for testing at maximum speed. According to the passport, Lada Kalina with a 1.4 liter engine should accelerate to 167 km/h. The 160 km/h limit is easy for the car. But then it begins to react strongly to descents and ascents. The record for such a high-speed run was 180 km/h, of course, according to the speedometer...

At high speeds, it is worth sticking to the correct trajectory. Sudden movements of the steering wheel can lead to unwanted body sway. The steering wheel is not very informative. You feel this especially in the zero zone. In other words, the driver has to constantly steer. And the high ground clearance of 160 mm does not have the best effect on the car’s behavior: the air flow tends to tear the car off the asphalt at any cost. As for comfort, everything is in order here. The suspension handles both small and large irregularities well. At the same time, there is practically no noise in the cabin. Such flexible behavior on potholes was achieved through the installation of barrel springs.

The second day of the test drive involved visiting several checkpoints, where you could try the car in different guises - in the sand and on a winding asphalt road. We overcame these special stages in a car with a 1.6‑liter engine. Surprising but true. The 1.6 liter engine is inferior in most respects to the 1.4 liter engine. The power turned out to be 9 hp less, and the maximum rated speed was 5 km/h. Practice has confirmed the theory. The maximum power of the 1.6 liter engine is achieved at 5200 min-1, and the maximum torque of 120 Nm is achieved at 3000 min-1. On the track this is strongly felt when approaching maximum speeds. In terms of acceleration dynamics, the engines are very similar. It's hard to feel the difference of one second. But 1.4 liters is inferior to 1.6 liters in elasticity - you don’t have to “twist” it so much. And the pickup starts already at 2500 min-1.

During the return trip from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala, we managed to set two records. The maximum speed of a car with a 1.6-liter engine was 170 km/h according to the speedometer, which is 10 km/h less than what was achieved with a 1.4-liter engine. The second achievement was personal. The 300 km route was covered in just three and a half hours. This was largely achieved thanks to the politeness of Karelian drivers, who immediately gave way to the new Kalina.
The version with a 1.6 liter engine is also equipped with ABS from Bosch. Oddly enough, the rear brakes are not disc brakes, but regular drums. According to engineers, the introduction of an anti-lock braking system made it possible to reduce the braking distance by 10 meters. If we evaluate the intensity of the slowdown, then it has increased. You can feel more confident on loose and uneven surfaces. We were convinced of this by driving along a gravel road on the final third day. New configurations of Lada Kalina have two airbags - for the driver and front passenger. This is reminded by the SRS Airbag inscriptions on the steering wheel and front console. Fortunately, we didn’t have to test the pillows during our Karelian trip. Let's hope they work well.
