Wheel rim bolt pattern Niva Chevrolet compatibility table

There is a huge variety of types of wheel rims for different models. They greatly change the exterior of the car, especially compared to the basic version. Nowadays they are made from the following materials:
  1. Stamped steel. Determined by installation from the factory. They are the cheapest of all and have only one type produced. A stamped wheel rim can be restored after damage.
  2. Aluminum. Decorative forms and types that are made by casting. They are lightweight compared to steel, and cast ones are highly resistant to corrosion.
  3. Aluminum or magnesium alloys. Manufactured by hot stamping. They also have low weight and are durable, so bending a wheel made of alloys is more difficult than previous ones.
  4. Combined alloys. Manufactured by combining two alloys. They have the maximum strength of all the above and a correspondingly high price. If damaged, you can restore it to its original appearance.

Different types and sizes of wheels are also available for the Chevrolet Niva. After all, a car with beautiful wheels looks much better, more presentable and more stylish than with ordinary ones. Let's look at the characteristics of R15 wheels for the Chevrolet Niva and their features.

Dimensions

Castings are very popular; due to their main characteristics, they are optimally suited for the car. Unlike conventional ones, their price is slightly higher, but at the same time they are quite durable and resistant to corrosion. The size of the wheels on the Chevy Niva depends on your choice, and as a rule, from the factory they have a 15 radius. The wheel size should also be suitable. The positive aspects of casting are that, thanks to its light weight, Niva 4x4 quickly gains momentum, and their braking distance, unlike conventional ones, is reduced. Another important parameter is that in hot weather, thanks to small holes around the entire circle, the brake system is blown and, accordingly, cooled. Models with expensive equipment may already come with cast aluminum wheels.

Parameters of standard nuts

It is important to remember: the nuts on wheel rims are made in a special way and differ from ordinary ones. This is evidenced by the special carving. Its metric differs significantly from the standard one. Nivas use nuts with a diameter of 12 mm and a pitch of 1.25 mm. Moreover, standard turns have a similar pitch, 1.75 mm. Thanks to a small step, the reliability of such a connection significantly increases. Due to this parameter, the self-tightening effect is realized.

Samples of nuts for Niva car wheels

This is why it is not recommended to use nuts that were not originally intended for installation on a vehicle. Since larger coils are not suitable. At the factory, the nuts are made so wide that when you screw them onto the stud, it comes out on the other side. The inner part is made in the form of a regular cone.

Using a conical connection to the disk allows you to solve two problems simultaneously:

  • the hole must be centered;
  • there is a good connection between the plane of the wheel rim and the hub.

All nuts are divided into two main categories:

  • closed type;
  • open type.

Closed ones do not imply the passage of the hub through. In turn, open ones require a through hole. The closed type is usually used only on Niva Chevrolet, as well as on the VAZ-21213.

Standard factory nuts are installed under a regular 19 mm wheel wrench. Moreover, some, non-standard and manufactured by third-party manufacturers, can be made on a 21 mm turnkey basis. Their size is up to 30 mm. Standard factory-produced nuts are carbon steel. They are equipped with a chrome plated and differ in the shape of the head.

Chevrolet Niva wheel sizes

The most popular ones installed on Chevrolet Nivas are alloy wheels. The main characteristics they possess are quite acceptable for both the car and the driver. After all, their price is relatively low. They are more expensive than steel ones, but not by much. In addition, they are durable and resistant to corrosion. Their weight allows them to gain speed faster, and when braking, they have a shorter braking distance compared to steel ones. Another important parameter is the possibility of cooling the brake system by blowing with air flow. Steel discs have an almost completely closed design with small holes around the disc, which does not allow air to enter the brake system. Due to their design, cast ones have this property. This is very important in hot weather, as the brake pads overheat and have no way of cooling.

Basic Chevrolet Niva models are available with steel wheels of size R15. We'll look at what this means later. Luxury and new 2014 models often come from production with cast aluminum, but they all have the same appearance. Although they differ from steel ones, you still want individuality. Therefore, you can purchase a car with a steel structure and then install any wheels you like.

What does R15 stand for?

Chevrolet Niva is often equipped with R15 size rims as standard. If we decipher it literally, then R means radial tire, and 15 is the diameter of the rim in inches. You can also install wheels of sizes R16-R17 on the Chevrolet Niva. But this requires some reconstruction of the chassis.

Each wheel has a correspondingly different weight, and weight plays a very important role in the movement of a car. It is not recommended to install a wheel with a weight greater than the standard one, as this will create a load on the engine, which will have a negative effect, and will also increase the load on the chassis.

The size of the disc is a truly important characteristic for choosing them for a Chevrolet Niva, but it is also important to know the number of holes for mounting to the hub of the car. The Niva wheel rim has five holes for fastening with nuts. There are cars in which the mount has 3 or 4 holes, and some have six. But, most importantly, when choosing, you should pay attention to the number of holes. The wheel rim also has its own specific width. The greater the width, the greater the offset the car wheel will have. A large offset will increase the load on the bearings, which will lead to rapid wear, but, on the other hand, a car with a large wheel offset has better stability both on and off-road. The main technical parameters of Chevrolet Niva wheel rims are shown in the table.

How to diagnose a broken hub

Surely every driver has at least once encountered a situation when, while driving, a so-called crackling noise is heard.
The sound can appear at speeds of 40 km/h and above. Using a car with such a sign is fraught not only with danger to the life of the driver and passengers, but also with serious consequences for the car itself. Most likely, you will notice a hum in a loaded car when turning. Finding out which wheel bearing is worn out is quite simple: if there is noise from the wheel when turning to the right, the left bearing should be replaced. Similarly, if a hum occurs when turning left, pay attention to the right bearing.

There are several stages of wheel bearing wear:

  • hum when turning;
  • hum during normal driving with a loaded car;
  • hum when driving an empty car;
  • constant hum that increases during turns;
  • a strong hum, accompanied by crunching, grinding and unregulated movements of the car from side to side.

The period of time between the first and fifth stages with moderate driving can be up to 5 years. It is recommended to replace the part as soon as possible so as not to put the car and the driver’s life at risk.

What could have caused the Niva Chevrolet bearing to fail:

  • in 70% of cases, breakdown occurs due to unsuitable lubricant: its quality, excess or shortage may well damage the part;
  • it happens that various contaminants and moisture penetrate deep into the bearing;
  • this is the cause of failure in 18% of cases;
  • There is also a possibility of incorrect assembly of parts, which entails excessive load and overheating.

What are the risks of driving a car with a damaged wheel bearing? There is a considerable possibility of the wheel jamming, which can end in disaster when driving at high speed. It is quite possible to lose control of the car due to the wheel “moving to the side”. Spreading brake pads is also a possible consequence.

Designation R

Chevrolet Niva 15 wheels have a radius from the factory, where R- denotes a radial tire, and 15 is the diameter in inches. The tire size for Niva 2121 is an important characteristic, but you also need to know what the bolt pattern on the Niva is on the disc. You will have to take a larger tire size for the field. The diameter of the holes with which they are attached to the hubs is 5 pieces. The wheel also has a certain width and the larger it is, the greater the offset it will have. On the one hand, the longer the reach, the better, since the Niva 21213 will perform better off-road, but on the other hand, the bearings will wear out quickly.

Below is a table with the main parameters:

Wheels for Niva - from small to large

Absolutely every driver has at least once had the thought that it’s time to get bigger wheels. Because the stock Nyvka is, of course, good, but as they say - more wheels - more possibilities. Therefore, let’s figure out what a driver will have to face in order to install tires of a larger diameter and, in general, whether it’s worth doing. Here we will try to present everything as simply and clearly as possible, because looking for answers on forums is long and painful for many)) Because many people are absolutely not happy with driving the Vli-5))

Basically, here we will collect all your questions and answers to them.

Is it worth switching to 15-inch wheels?

I think you know that most tire drivers are switching from standard 16″ wheels to 15″ ones. For what? The answer is prosaic - the choice of tires with a 15″ fit is many times greater than for 16. That’s why they switch, because they want to install a meaner rubber, but with 16″ options the cat cried. No, of course, if you drive a Kama Flame, then leave the standard wheels. But I think you will soon feel that you should at least install Cordiant.

In general, then I’ll write a separate article about normal 16″ tires for the Niva. In the meantime, I recommend these cool “slippers” K-139 - they will fit on the Niva without modifications, they row perfectly and you don’t need to think about buying 15 discs. Although the choice of 15 tires is simply gorgeous, here you will also find Goodrich, Mudrichi, Hankuki and other well-known mud tires.

What is the maximum tire size for a Niva without modifications (lift, cutting arches)?

If the car is new, then few people will want to cut the arches - this is a fact. So the answer is this: the maximum you can set is 215-75-R15. I have this one on my Shevik, which is stock, by the way. However, there’s an immediate counter-question here: what kind of wheels to take for these tires, because everything is right next to each other, and if you get smart about the takeoff, the tires will rub against the wheel arch liners. The answer is that you need to take wheels with an offset of 40, or at least 35.

So if you are looking towards 235 tires, then get ready to prepare the car, cut arches, lift, change the main pairs, etc. Do you need it? An increase of 1.5 cm in ground clearance, and work per million. It makes sense to use 235 tires only when you are planning to seriously offroad. And if you simply want to put the biggest wheels possible on your Nivko without any modifications, then your choice is 215-75-R15.

What disc offset will be optimal for Niva chassis parts?

The basic rule is “wider and larger wheels - less offset”, but within reasonable limits. Because many people like to set the offset to zero and the car will be very unstable on sharp turns and big tires. Maintain balance))

Everything will depend on the size of the wheels. As you know, the factory recommendation is offset 58. Therefore, the closer the offset of your disk is to this indicator, the better. ET 58 is recommended because the wheels from the factory are very small; K-156 tires seem to be 185-75-16 in size. For such small wheels the reach is appropriate, maybe more.

Characteristics of factory wheels

Disk parameters include two points:

  • the material from which they are made;
  • technical data.

At the factory, stamped steel wheels are installed on a Chevrolet Niva car. This is a budget material, so products made from it have a lower price compared to other options. The advantages include increased flexibility.

Technical data of wheels, which are installed by the manufacturer:

Maximum and minimum possible parameters of non-standard disks

Due to the design features of the body and wheel arches, it is possible to install wheels of various modifications. Many owners want to install models with a larger diameter than are available. The maximum permissible wheel parameters for which it is not necessary to use an angle grinder to modify the body:

  • profile width, mm – 215;
  • profile height, mm – 75.

The maximum permissible overhang is 35. When installing a profile with a width of more than 215 mm, the arches will have to be cut in any case. In turn, the minimum permissible offset is 58. These are the wheels that are installed on cars directly at the factory. The optimal solution is considered to be parameter 40-45. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with all the installation details in advance. This way you can avoid wiping. You can see the characteristics in special photos.

Properly selected wheels and tires are the key to stable vehicle behavior on the road. It is important to familiarize yourself with the factory settings in advance.

The rim width of the Chevrolet Niva 1.8i is 6 (inches), the nominal diameter is 15 (inches).

Wheel dimensions for Chevrolet Niva:

  • The wheelsets of these models consist of disks with a diameter of 15 (inches) or 16 (inches), a width of 6 (inches) or 7 (inches).

Models are equipped only with discs with 5 holes for mounting bolts, their diameter is 139.7 (mm).

Installation

To install, you need to do the following:

  1. We jack up the car. Remove the tires from the rims and then the wheel.
  2. Check the atmospheric pressure, it should be 2.2
  3. Install the tire on the protruding bolts
  4. We tighten and lightly tighten the nuts
  5. Lower the jack machine and tighten the nuts
  6. Replacement process completed

In addition to the Chevy Niva wheels for 15, you can install wheels on the Chevrolet Niva 16 radius and 17 radius, but for this you will need to make minor reconstructions of the chassis. The larger the size, the better the off-road performance of the field, the braking distance becomes shorter, and the handling is easier.

With the modernization of Niva 21214, vibration increases and you have to drive harder.

What wheels were installed on different car bodies and configurations?

The ride comfort, the condition of the chassis and the further operation of the vehicle depend on the dimensions of the wheels and tires installed on the vehicle.

To ensure the correct operation of the above criteria, vehicle manufacturers provide the recommended parameters of parts, components and assemblies installed on the vehicle in the vehicle operating instructions. The same applies to the Niva Chevrolet.

AvtoVAZ recommends the following wheel and tire sizes with appropriate air pressure.

Tire sizesLoad IndexSpeed indexDisc width, inchReach ET, mmAir pressure in the wheel, MPa

R18 175/8088Q95T5; 5.5 J 48-580.210.19

Advice. It is not recommended to install alloy wheels that are too large on a Chevrolet Niva; this may cause problems with the operation of the vehicle’s chassis.

The speed index is an important parameter when selecting tires. Depending on the speed at which the car moves, wheels with a certain index are selected:

  • Q – up to 160 km/h;
  • S – no more than 180 km/h;
  • T – up to 190 km/h.

As for the load capacity of the car, before installing the wheels, you need to check the markings on the tire. It corresponds to 85, 88, 92. The minimum carrying capacity of the car is 515 kg, corresponding to index 88.

Wheels for Niva Chevrolet

To correctly replace wheels on a Chevrolet Niva, you need to know the basic parameters of the wheels of the car brand. The first thing you need to look at is the bolt pattern (PCD). She shows:

  • number of mounting holes;
  • the radius along which the centers of the mounting holes are located.

Thanks to the bolt pattern, it becomes clear whether the disk can be suitable for a particular car, if we take into account the technical side.

For Niva, the PCD parameter values can be as follows:

  • 5x139.7 with a reach of 40 mm;
  • 5x139 with a reach of 48 mm.

Today you can install 4 variants of disks on the Chevrolet Niva:

  • stamped;
  • cast;
  • forged;
  • prefabricated (forged rim and cast disc).

They differ not only in manufacturing method and appearance, but also in materials. Discs can be made from:

  • Stamped steel. They are created by the manufacturer. The cheapest wheels that have the same appearance. Once they fail, they can be repaired.
  • Aluminum. They are also called cast, so the shape and appearance are decorative. Light weight compared to steel. They are highly resistant to corrosion.
  • Magnesium alloy with the addition of titanium. The hot stamping method is used for manufacturing. Light weight, high strength. It is very difficult to bend such a wheel, unlike previous materials.

"Niva Chevrolet" with or with "casting". Which wheels are installed depends on the vehicle configuration:

  • L and LC - steel wheels with a radius of 15 inches;
  • GL and GLC - light alloy wheels with a radius of 16 inches.

What to consider when choosing tires and wheels for Niva cars

The classic three-door “short” Niva (“short” is the VAZ 2121, 21213, 21214, the “long” is the VAZ 2131 and extended Viso models) has a relatively small ratio of the wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles) to the track width. Such a car is called “short wheelbase”. A short wheelbase leads to poor vehicle handling if it skids. If the “short” Niva skids at a more or less decent speed, it is almost impossible to align it in a straight line using the controls; sometimes the car can make several 360-degree turns until the moment when it is possible to “catch” it with the steering wheel.

If you install low offset wheels on a “short” car, the track width will increase and the base to track ratio will become even smaller. At the same time, the car’s tendency to skid on a slippery road increases, and the driver’s ability to pull it out of the skid decreases. In addition, the expansion of the track leads to an increase in the load on the bearings of the front wheel hubs and the bearings of the axle shafts of the rear wheels and, as a result, their rapid failure.

Thus, when choosing wheels and tires, you should strive to ensure that the center of the wheel being installed is at the point where the center (contact patch with the road) of the standard wheel was. If the wheel being installed is wider than the standard one, the disk must be selected with an increased offset. For standard wheels, the use of disks with a short offset is impractical and even dangerous, especially on “short” cars.

How many bolt holes are there on Niva wheels?

Drilling requires 5 holes for five bolts. For a 4x4 field: 5 and 139.7 diameter of the holes in the field. The dimensions are presented in the table:

The first column shows the number of bolts and the diameter of the circle for each car, the second column shows the rim width, and the third column shows the diameter of the hole.

Many drivers do not always pay attention to the specified drilling of Niva disks when choosing wheels. You can allow the dimensions to be inaccurate, a few millimeters may “walk”, and therefore the wheel will not fit tightly. You need to make an accurate calculation, because this is safety!

Bolt pattern Niva Chevrolet

They are trying to improve the Niva in order to increase its off-road capability. The Chevrolet Niva is already considered the best in cross-country ability, but replacing and loosening the wheels significantly increases the characteristics of the Chevrolet Niva. When selecting discs, it is important to take into account the bolt pattern, which must comply with the technical descriptions and be suitable in size, diameter and bolt pattern. The diameter of the central hole must match the bolt pattern of the Niva wheels and its parameters as per the instructions.

The bolt pattern Niva 2121, the bolt pattern Niva 21213, the bolt pattern Niva 21214 and the bolt pattern Niva 4×4 are indicated in the table above.

It is important that when installing and selecting disks, the basic drilling parameters are preserved.

Why know the bolt pattern?

After the disc is installed at the factory with nuts on the hub, there should be a gap between the stud and the mounting hole. This mandatory requirement allows you to comply with safety standards. The disc must be tightened with nuts with a force of 62–70 Nm.

If the bolt pattern does not fit, the last bolt is tightened at a certain angle. Accordingly, the wheel will stand at an angle, which is fraught. Vibration will appear or the disk may fall off altogether.

General parameters for all disks on a Chevrolet Niva

Drilling (bolt pattern) LZ/PCD: 5/139.7 (number of holes/radius of the circle on which their centers are located)

Center hole diameter (DIA): 98 mm (corresponds to the outer diameter of the car hub)

In our humble opinion, it is better to buy castings on a Chevrolet Niva than stamped wheels. Modern alloy wheels can withstand exposure to reagents for several seasons, and are often even cheaper in price than steel wheels.

Official name of the car brand: Chevrolet, alternative name: Chevrolet, some variants of erroneous or slang names: Chevrolet

Standard disk sizes

A feature of the car of the type in question is that there are no differences in disks for cars of different years of manufacture. Standard parameters:

  • 6 inches – rim width;
  • 15 inches - diameter;
  • ET40 – departure.

Overhang means the distance between the planes of fastening and symmetry. It is important to note: using discs that do not meet the specified parameters can cause a lot of trouble. First of all:

  • accelerated wear of the vehicle chassis;
  • damage to the wheel arches of the vehicle.

For example, when installing disks with a diameter of 16 inches or more, various difficulties arise. For example, if the profile height is high enough, the fender liner may be damaged. It is simply erased by the rubber tread. Therefore, before carrying out the installation process, you should familiarize yourself with all the nuances. A good solution is to get advice from specialists.

Drilling must comply with the parameters specified by the manufacturer. This characteristic is designated by the abbreviation PCD. Standard: 5*139.7:

  • the first digit indicates the number of holes;
  • the second number is the diameter in millimeters.

Also, the central hole for the hub must correspond to the standard value. This parameter is designated as Dia, diameter. It is 98.5 mm. It is worth noting that there are a large number of discs on sale with a hole 1-3 mm larger than this value. It is advisable to refuse to purchase such ones. Since the discs will not be installed tightly, which will lead to grinding of the hub.

It is important to remember: it is advisable to avoid using wheels with offsets ET58 and ET40. As a rule, the internal bearing fails after a short time. A good solution would be a wheel with an offset of ET35. Some owners install an ET0 type disk - in this case, the outer bearing may begin to fail earlier.

How to extend the life of disks

In our weather conditions, when treating roads with deicing agents, it is important to monitor the frequency of alloy wheels on a Chevrolet Niva, wash and clean them on time. It is necessary to do minor wheel repairs on time: Chevrolet Niva r15 wheels, Chevrolet Niva wheels size 16. Tint them, remove scuffs and chips, for safe driving on the road. Carry out tire fitting of wheels in specialized centers. Of course, the main rule is driving itself, jumping less on curbs and other obstacles. A calm and measured ride is the key to the success and durability of all car components.

Exploitation

To ensure that the service life of the wheels is as long as possible, the following rules should be observed:

  1. Tires must be properly attached to the hubs
  2. It is advisable to drive on a bad road at low speed
  3. Check discs for cracks and chips
  4. Balance every 10,000 kilometers

To summarize, we can conclude that the best option is to install alloy wheels with a 17 radius on the Niva. With them, excellent cross-country ability of an SUV will be achieved.

It is very important to follow traffic rules on the road. For safe driving on a Chevrolet Niva, it is important that the car has wheels that correspond to the parameters of this car and are provided by the manufacturer, otherwise you will have to constantly change the wheel bearings. Discs should be forged or cast, not too heavy. Wash your car more often, preferably at a car wash. It is important to install tires on your car according to the time of year. Hub repair: popular mistakes and misconceptions

Connoisseurs of tuned cars are often able to make radical changes to their cars. And few restrictions exist for them. Owners of Niva Chevrolet are no exception. Tuning fans also took a look at the design of the front hub assembly. Often on online forums in discussions you can find advice (and even corresponding training videos) about replacing the bearing using a hub mechanism that has a steering knuckle from a VAZ 2121 car, since it is believed that this design is better in terms of reliability.

However, this is a misconception. Yes, tightening will occur without any difficulties, but this will make it impossible to adjust the camber of the front wheel of the car. The fact is that each fist has distinct differences in size and axial angles. But much more stupid are the tips that require turning the hub and shaft on a lathe.

Repairs such as replacing a wheel bearing in a field can be done independently without much difficulty. Wheel bearings on the VAZ 2121 and Chevrolet Niva have a very short resource due to the suspension design, compared to other all-wheel drive vehicles, therefore, these parts need to be given increased attention in order to identify the fault in time.

Replacing a wheel bearing in the field does not involve anything complicated if you follow the instructions strictly. Anyone, even a novice car owner, can cope with such repairs. Not all vases have wheel bearings changed the same way. The design of the Niva car hub differs from the design of other VAZ models, so the process of replacing the bearing will also have its differences.

Symptoms and identification of a worn wheel bearing

When the life of the hub bearing is running out, a hum is clearly audible when driving, this is the main sign. If you listen, you can understand which direction this hum is coming from. When driving at low speeds, it is not too noticeable, and it can easily be confused with noise from rubber, but as speed increases, the hum increases, which is reminiscent of flying in an airplane. You can’t drive with a humming bearing, because soon it may simply break into pieces, and this implies a lot of other problems.

If there is an assumption that the bearing has exhausted its service life, then you can check this with the car parked. To do this, you need to jack up the wheel whose bearing is suspected and pull the wheel vertically with your hands. If there is play, then the bearing is most likely to blame.

Necessary tools for work

  • Jack and supports. To replace the front bearing, you need to lift both wheels, otherwise the stabilizer will interfere, pinching the suspension elements;
  • Wrench for unscrewing wheel nuts;
  • Flathead screwdriver. To remove the protective cap;
  • Head 27;
  • Locksmith's beard. To straighten the collar of the hub nut;
  • Hammer;
  • Wrenches for 10, 17, 19 and 22;
  • Chisel and wooden spacer. To avoid damaging other parts when knocking out;
  • Vise;
  • A piece of pipe for pressing in bearing retaining rings.

Bearing replacement process

  • Loosen the nuts on the wheel where replacement is planned and jack up both wheels of the axle. Remove the desired wheel;
  • We dismantle the caliper and guide. To avoid damaging the brake hose, we tie the caliper to the upper arm with wire;
  • Having removed the protective cap, use a 27mm head to unscrew the hub bearing nut and remove the conical bushing;
  • Using a chisel, unbend the locking plate of the front and rear lever mounting nuts. Using a 19mm wrench, unscrew the front and rear nuts securing the lever. After this, remove the locking plate;
  • When the lever is released, it must be moved away from the steering knuckle, freeing the brake hose;
  • Disconnect the ball joints (upper and lower) from the lever;
  • Now you can remove the entire steering knuckle assembly, along with the ball joints and the brake disc, by removing it from the CV joint splines;
  • Separate the steering knuckle from the hub with the brake disc. If the parts do not separate freely, then we clamp the fist in a vice and, using a soft metal drift or chisel, through a spacer from wood, knock out the hub with the brake disc;
  • Next, pull out the bolts securing the lever and knock down the protective ring with a chisel;
  • Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the bolt that secures the casing and remove the casing itself;
  • We hold the fist in a vice and, using a flat-head screwdriver, pry up and remove the wheel bearing seal. There is a metal ring behind the oil seal, we also remove it;
  • The next step is to remove the inner ring of the outer bearing assembly from the well. Next, we also remove the oil seal, metal ring and inner bearing ring assembly;
  • Using a punch and a hammer, we knock out the metal rings of the outer and inner bearings. At this point, dismantling is considered complete.

After cleaning the well from old grease, you can proceed to installing a new bearing. Replacing a wheel bearing in a field occurs in the reverse order; it is only important not to forget to fill it with fresh Litol 24 grease and, after installing the steering knuckle on the car, adjust the clearance in the bearings.
