VAZ 2114: Error P0335 – what it means, causes, symptoms and solutions

DPKV is one of the most important car sensors, because Without it, the car simply won’t start.

Let me remind you that the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) transmits the received current pulse to the controller, which in turn regulates engine operation. Read more about DPKV in the article: DPKV on VAZ. Operating principle, signs of malfunction.

The sensor is a simple mechanism, so there is nothing to break there. But nevertheless, nothing lasts forever, and the sensor fails.

How to repair DPKV?

Unfortunately, DPKV cannot be repaired, BUT! Most often, the fault occurs not in the sensor itself, but in the sensor circuit. In other words, if the DPKV is broken, then it needs to be replaced with a new one, but before replacing it, you need to check the wiring suitable for the sensor.

If the sensor is faulty, the on-board computer or diagnostics generates the following errors:

  • Error 0335 - incorrect DPKV signal.
  • Error 0336 - Crankshaft position sensor signal error.
  1. Most often, wires break in the connector area. Moreover, the insulation remains unharmed, so it will not be possible to determine a wire break by eye. In this case, we do the following: remove the wiring block from the sensor, and try to pull out the wires one by one, applying a little force. If a break occurs, you will tear the insulation and pull out a piece of the broken wire.
  2. DMRV malfunction. Yes, Yes, That's it! If the mass air flow sensor is faulty, error (0335) of the crankshaft position sensor appears when the ignition is turned on. The fact is that when we turn the ignition key, the DPKV diagnostic process starts using the air flow signal.
  3. Also, error 0335 can occur as a result of pulse noise created by the generator wiring.
  4. The damper rubber on the pulley, or the pulley itself, has worn out. In this case, the pulley will rotate in a figure eight.
  5. The teeth on the pulley have broken, so the sensor receives an impulse that is incompatible with engine operation.
  6. Malfunction of the sensor itself - check the DPKV (How to check and replace the DPKV?).

A little theory

The camshaft position sensor (hereinafter referred to as CPR) is used to determine the angular position of the timing belt in accordance with the position of the crankshaft. The signals that the sensor sends to the ECU are necessary for correct fuel injection and ignition control.

DPRV is also called a Hall sensor, since its operation is based on the Hall effect, and a phase sensor (PD). All these names are correct, it’s just that in my diagnostic application on my phone it’s called the camshaft position sensor and I’m already used to calling it that.

The principle of operation of the DPRV is based on the change in voltage in the semiconductor when the magnetic field crossing it changes. I know - it’s not clear. Simply put, there is a metal tooth on the camshaft, which is called a reference, and in the DPRV there is a permanent magnet. When the benchmark passes by the sensor, an impulse arises in it, which is transmitted to the ECU.

Based on these very signals, the ECU already understands what position the camshaft is in, finds out when the first piston will be at top dead center, when to supply fuel to the cylinders and ignite the air-fuel mixture.

As you can see, a lot depends on one sensor for the correct operation of the engine.

About errors - DRIVE2

1. TRUST BUT CHECK. Malfunctions of the electronic fuel injection system sensors do not always correspond to error codes that are recorded in the controller’s memory when they are detected. In the practice of diagnosing and repairing cars equipped with an electronic fuel injection system, there are cases when replacing a sensor identified by the controller as faulty does not give the desired result. We will not consider cases of electrical wiring faults or the quality of spare parts. My experience working with VAZ cars allows me to determine the most common patterns for them.

Code P0335, “HF synchronization sensor error,” is stored in the memory when the mass air flow sensor is faulty. The explanation was found on the website www.chiptuner.ru. The ECU diagnoses this malfunction at the moment the ignition is turned on, when the engine is not yet cranked by the starter, but a signal about non-zero air flow from the mass air flow sensor appears and there is no signal from the air flow sensor.

The appearance of code P0131, "Low signal level from the oxygen sensor", sometimes together with code P0134, "No activity of the oxygen sensor", can also be caused by a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor. A low air flow signal level leads to a lean mixture and, as a consequence, to a low voltage level at the oxygen sensor. In this case, short-term acceleration of the engine, that is, short-term enrichment of the mixture, leads to an increase in the readings of the oxygen sensor. Code P0131, “High signal level from the oxygen sensor,” may appear on a new car due to the absence of a through hole in the fitting on the intake manifold to drain vacuum to fuel pressure control. At the same time, the fuel pressure in the rail according to the pressure gauge is constantly kept at 3 atm, and the spark plugs have to be cleaned every 300 km. Code P0325, “Open detonation sensor,” is stored in the memory when the throttle position sensor is faulty. Bosch control units are guilty of this. Determined by viewing the voltage at the TPS in the “ADC Inputs” menu. It can change when the gas pedal is stationary or change abruptly when the pedal is pressed smoothly. While driving, the engine speed does not drop below 1200-1300 rpm. The readings of the detonation channel with the engine running will be within normal limits. In this case, codes P0122 and P0123, “Low signal level from the throttle position sensor” and “High signal level from the throttle position sensor,” respectively, are detected only if the sensor is clearly shorted or broken. Code P0505, “Idle speed control error,” occurs if you start the engine with the gas pedal pressed. There is no malfunction here, you just need to politely advise the client who has switched from a carburetor to an injection car not to do this again. The same code is entered when the engine is started and running with a faulty ignition module, spark plugs are not working, or one or more high-voltage wires are broken when the engine speed is not correspond to the IAC position. It can be recorded alone if the program does not detect misfires, or together with codes P0300, “Misfire in cylinders,” and P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 by cylinder numbers, respectively. It can also be detected if the rubber damper on the pulley breaks crankshaft and ring gear displacement. It manifests itself as popping noises in the muffler and reduced idle speed. If code P0501, “Vehicle speed sensor error,” is detected, it may turn out that the sensor drive in the gearbox is to blame. If the teeth of the plastic drive gear are cut off, then disassembling the gearbox cannot be avoided2. SOME “SORES” OF THE INJECTION VAZ. Two malfunctions, often found on cars of the 2108 ... 2115 family, are apparently associated with saving wires when decoupling the injection system harness. The first of them is a short wire to the crankshaft position sensor. The wire is in a tense state and, due to vibration, gradually breaks at the connector itself. After slight twitching for 1-2 days, the car stalls and refuses to start, code P0335, “HF synchronization sensor error,” may appear. You can temporarily revive it if you insert two pieces of wire into the removed connector, connected to the torn wires, and carefully snap it onto place. Having reached the repair site, you need to disassemble the connector, extend the wires, solder all connections, insulate and shield. The second malfunction is similar to the first and is associated with the coolant temperature sensor connector. In this case, first there are jerks when driving, starting is deteriorated, and then the cooling fan starts to work constantly, the ECU writes code P0118, “High signal level from the coolant temperature sensor.” The elimination method is exactly the same as the first one; the wires are either extended or rearranged. Sometimes a malfunction occurs related to the location of the injector control harness on the metal parts of the engine - one of the wires is frayed. If the negative control wire is shorted, one or two injectors (depending on the modification of the engine management system) are constantly open, which causes interruptions in engine operation and one of the fault codes P0200...0204, “Injector control circuit is faulty,” is entered. If the common power wire of the injectors shorts, the engine stalls because the common fuse of the main relay power circuit burns out. Repair comes down to restoring damaged insulation and displacing the harness to prevent contact with metal parts of the engine. Another malfunction begins to appear mainly after the car has driven more than 20,000 km. Starting gets worse, the car stalls after engine braking or when coasting, idle speed disappears - all this points to the idle speed regulator. But do not rush to replace it right away. You need to remove the regulator by unscrewing the two fastening screws and pull out the O-ring. Clean the throttle hole. Connect the tester connector to the regulator to check the IAC and pull out the needle until the needle falls out. The same operation can be done by changing the number of steps using any diagnostic device in the “MI Control” menu by connecting a standard connector to the regulator. On the threaded part of the needle there is a lubricant installed by the manufacturer, which in appearance resembles CIATIM-221, and has the consistency of frozen butter. Rinse the threaded part of the needle and the hole in the regulator in gasoline, clean the conical part of the needle. Pour 3-5 drops of engine oil into the regulator. Reassemble everything in the reverse order and run the engine several times to set the regulator to the desired position.

Help with an engine error - logbook Lada 2110 Bumblebee 2002 on DRIVE2

Guys, the problem is this... I washed my wife’s car 2112 today and washed the engine! After I blew everything out thoroughly, I started it without any problems! I went to change the springs on it. I changed it myself near the garage for about 2 hours - I collected it and started getting ready to pick it up for work. I start it up and it starts without problems. I went to the other end of the city - no problems. I picked it up and on the way back we stopped many times, turned it off, went shopping and started it up again without any problems. I came home and installed it - everything is fine! and after 4 hours I start it up and it turns stupidly but doesn’t start... the on-board engine gives an error 0335 HF SYNCHRONIZATION SENSOR ERROR - what is this anyway? where should I go to look? I removed all the chips from the sensors - everything is dry... everything is put back in place - nothing is torn off anywhere. but it won't start...

DIAGNOSE YOUR CAR YOURSELF!

Code P0335 is entered if:

the crankshaft turns; For one rotation of the engine crankshaft, the controller reads less than 58 or more than 60 teeth on the crankshaft pulley master disk. If a permanent malfunction occurs, the “CHECK ENGINE” lamp lights up after 2 drive cycles.

1. Check the wires and resistance of the crankshaft position sensor. Resistance may change slightly as temperature increases.

2. The output signal of the sensor should have an alternating current voltage amplitude of about 0.3 V when the crankshaft is cranked by the starter.

HOW TO CHECK:

1. Use the Errors menu to clear the error codes. Crank the crankshaft for 10 seconds or until the engine starts.

symptoms

NOTE: If the crank sensor is used only for misfire detection and NOT for ignition timing (this varies by vehicle), the vehicle should start and run with the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) illuminated. Additionally, some vehicles require several key cycles for the MIL to turn on. In this case, the MIL may not appear until the problem becomes frequent enough over time. If the crank sensor is used for both misfire detection and ignition timing, the vehicle may or may not start. Symptoms may include:

  • The car may not start (see above)
  • The vehicle may run rough or misfire
  • MIL backlight

conclusions

The reasons why the “CHECK” function lights up on the Lada Grant are quite simple, since this sensor is responsible for the full operation of the engine. To identify the causes, it is worth conducting a diagnosis and determining why this happened, and only then eliminating it.

A modern car is crammed with electronics. Multiple gauges and warning lights on the instrument panel indicate different faults. This progress did not bypass the Lada Granta. The most well-known signal is the “CHECK” function lighting up. This is an indication that there are problems with the operation of the engine or control unit.
