Trouble P0118 - Coolant Temperature Sensor - Signal High

What are the symptoms of a P0118 code?

  • When this error appears, the Check Engine light will light up on the vehicle's dashboard. The ECM will put the engine into limp mode, replacing the incorrect coolant temperature sensor reading with a value of 80°C (176°F).
  • The car engine may be difficult to start when cold. When warm, the engine starts normally.
  • The car engine may run rough until it warms up.
  • After warming up, the engine usually runs normally.

Note : Symptoms of this error may vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

Symptoms of Code P0118

If you have a P0018 code, the truth is that you likely won't notice a ton of symptoms. In most cases, the only thing you'll likely notice is the check engine light. However, although this is usually what happens, it is not the only possible outcome. We've highlighted a few other possible outcomes below.

  • No abnormal symptoms
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Hard launch

When your car's engine fan and other cooling devices are constantly running, the engine ends up overworking itself. This means your fuel economy will drop slightly, even though you likely won't notice a significant drop.

How does a mechanic diagnose a P0118 code?

When diagnosing this error, the mechanic will do the following:

  • Visually inspect the coolant temperature sensor and related electrical wires and connector
  • Reads all stored data and error codes using an OBD-II scanner to find out when and under what circumstances the P0118 error occurred
  • Clear the error codes from the computer's memory and test drive the vehicle to see if the P0118 code appears again
  • Check the electrical wires and coolant temperature sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
  • Observes the coolant temperature sensor readings in real time using a scanner
  • If necessary, replace the coolant temperature sensor, associated electrical wires and connector, or engine control module (ECM)

Code P0116 Coolant temperature sensor circuit, signal out of acceptable range

Code P0117 Coolant temperature sensor circuit low signal

Code P0118 Coolant temperature sensor circuit, high signal level

Code P0116 is entered into the controller’s memory if, with the engine running, the calculated temperature exceeds the measured temperature by the threshold value

Code PO117 is entered into the controller memory if the sensor signal voltage is less than 0.097 V

Code P0118 is entered into the controller’s memory if the sensor signal voltage is more than 4.88 V.

The malfunction indicator lights up on the 3rd trip after a permanent malfunction occurs. Description of checks

1 The serviceability of the sensor output signal circuit is checked. 2 Check the serviceability of the sensor grounding circuit. 3 The resistance of the sensor is measured and the cause of the fault code is determined: sensor or engine cooling system. Diagnostic information The controller supplies the DTOZh circuit with a voltage of 5 V through an internal resistor. When a DTOZ malfunction is detected, the controller calculates the coolant temperature using a special algorithm. The sensor ground circuit should be checked for faulty wiring or connection. Check the sensor contacts for secure connections. It is necessary to check the sensor resistance for compliance with the nominal value. A malfunction in the engine cooling system (open thermostat, etc.) can cause code P0116.

Scheme of DTOZH Kalina, grant

COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (DTOZH)

The sensor is installed in the engine coolant flow on the thermostat, on the cylinder head

The sensitive element of the coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor, i.e. a resistor whose electrical resistance changes depending on the temperature. High temperature causes low resistance, and low coolant temperature causes high resistance. The controller supplies a voltage of 5 V to the coolant temperature sensor circuit. The controller calculates the coolant temperature based on the voltage drop across the DTOZH. The voltage drop is relatively high when the engine is cold and low when the engine is warm. Coolant temperature is used in most engine management functions. If a malfunction occurs in the DTOZh circuits, the controller enters its code into its memory, turns on the warning light and the cooling system fan, and calculates the coolant temperature using a special algorithm.

Removing the DTOZH 1 Turn off the ignition. 2 Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the sensor. 3 Carefully unscrew the sensor (spanner 19). ATTENTION. Be careful when working with the sensor. Damage to the sensor may cause the engine control system to malfunction. Installing DTOZH 1 Screw the sensor into the thermostat housing (outlet pipe). The tightening torque of the sensor is 9.3…15.0 N.m (replaceable extended head 19, torque wrench). 2 Connect the wiring harness block to the sensor. 3 Top up coolant if necessary.

How serious is P0118?

When P0118 occurs, the vehicle's ECM will put the engine into limp mode. Staying in limp mode may result in unstable engine operation, which will continue until the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. Possible increased fuel consumption and excessive carbon buildup on engine components. Driving a vehicle in limp mode for long periods of time can lead to a number of other problems, including problems with the ignition system. Also, the cooling system fans can run continuously.
