If the car does not open or close with the Starline alarm key fob, then the main reasons are damage to the structural elements of the anti-theft system or the presence of frequency interference in the area. To resolve problems, you need to make sure that the alarm and battery components are working, that the system is installed correctly, and also diagnose the communicator itself.

Types and signs of Starline system failures
Possible signs of malfunctions and problems in the Starline signaling system:
- When closing the door elements of the body, one or more locks are activated.
- After locking the locks, all elements open automatically and almost instantly.
- When you open the car's central lock, you can only unlock one or more doors, for example, the driver's door. The problem may appear on vehicles with a Starline alarm while the engine is running.
- One or more functions have stopped working. The system may have stopped responding to pressing certain buttons or combinations thereof.
- When you unlock and close the doors, the communicator displays incorrect data. Information that signals are sent from the remote control to close and open locks is displayed on the key fob display. Perhaps the locking elements do not work completely or are partially activated, but the alarm on the screen shows their functionality.
- The door lock switches off spontaneously.
- In addition to problems with the central locking, the power unit in the car does not start. If this is not related to the operation of the engine itself, but it cannot start, the reason may be due to the anti-theft system.
Battery problem
Starline a91 may not lock the doors with the key fob due to the battery for three reasons:
- The unit is discharged;
- The battery was replaced with a new one;
- The battery is broken.
The cure for the last problem is to buy a new battery. The first is charging in a specialized service or at home. After replacing the unit, the key fob most often fails because it requires re-programming. We have already described above how this is done.
Why don't key fob locks work?
Key fob locks may not work due to the following reasons:
- problems with the communicator;
- dead battery in the car;
- improper installation of the anti-theft system;
- mechanical damage to any of the wires;
- problems with the central locking;
- Difficulty opening doors after auto start;
- problems after replacing the battery;
- no signal is generated or recognized.
Problems with the key fob
Problems associated with closing and opening doors can also be caused by a low battery in the key fob. You need to change the battery and check the functionality of the system.
If, after replacing the battery, the alarm still does not close the doors using the key fob, possible reasons may be:
- mechanical malfunction of the internal components of the communicator;
- failure due to exposure to moisture on the device;
- antenna module failure;
- clogging of contact pads and board elements.
To troubleshoot problems, the following solutions are provided:
- The battery is removed from the key fob. To do this, you need to remove the back cover of the device.
- The body is being disassembled. Depending on the alarm model and its year of manufacture, this procedure may be performed differently. To disassemble the case, you need to unscrew the bolt connecting its halves. The latter can be located in a special compartment behind the back cover or directly on it.
- All components are cleaned using a dry cloth or brush. Any traces of debris and dirt that could cause poor contact must be removed. In some cases, if the stains cannot be removed, you can use alcohol by moistening a cotton swab with it. Pouring liquid directly onto the board is not allowed, as this will damage it.
- A visual diagnosis of all components is performed. In practice, poor contact, disconnected wires or a defective capacitor can be seen; the latter should swell. A multimeter is used to test the tracks on the board.
- Failed parts of the key fob are replaced with new ones. Components are replaced by soldering. For example, if a button is changed, it must first be carefully unsoldered and then re-fixed; a soldering iron with a thin tip is used to complete the task.
- If the display in the key fob is being replaced, but the new screen must be carefully glued. The glue itself is applied carefully in a thin layer around its perimeter.
- Further assembly of the device is carried out in reverse order.
Car battery is dead
If the alarm does not open the door locks and generally does not function properly due to a low battery, the user must:
- Open the engine compartment.
- Perform a visual check of the battery. A possible problem may be a mechanical defect in the housing, due to which an electrolyte solution has leaked out of it.
Further testing of the battery is performed using a tester (multimeter) as follows:
- The terminals are disconnected from the device. It is recommended to clean the clamps immediately, since oxidation on the contacts also leads to incorrect operation of the system.
- The battery cans are opened and the water level in them is checked. If the electrolyte does not cover the working surfaces of the internal battery cells, adding liquid is required. For this, only special distilled water, sold in car dealerships, can be used.
- Voltage diagnostics are performed on the vehicle with the engine turned off, and then it is started and the parameter is rechecked. The operating value should be no less than 12 and no more than 13.8 volts. In the first case, the problem will be in the battery being discharged, in the second - in its overcharging.
- If necessary, the battery is charged; if this does not help, the battery should be removed and a new one installed.
Battery test video
User Batteryman in his video showed how to independently test the operation of a car battery using a tester.
Incorrect installation of the system
Installation errors that could affect the fact that the car does not open from the Starline alarm key fob:
- The user could, contrary to the instruction manual, place the transceiver with a built-in antenna next to electronic equipment or metal parts of the body. Their location closer than 5 cm will result in interference that will affect the quality of the signal.
- The antenna adapter was installed on glass with a protective film, which can create a shielding effect. Therefore, if the windshield is equipped with such a film, then the transceiver is installed on the rear.
Broken wire problem
If the contact on the conductor opens in the open or closed position, then to check and fix the problem, do this:
- The vehicle door opens. There is no need to lock it, but it is necessary to create the effect of closure. To do this, an awl, screwdriver or other element with a metal rod is inserted into the lock at the end. It is necessary to achieve a similar effect as in the case of a door closed with a bracket.
- The user must then press the limit switch installed in the doorway one or more times. It is necessary to press the trigger so that the microprocessor alarm module can recognize the opening.
- The protection mode is activated. This should lead to the door locks being locked, and a corresponding notification will be sent to the display remote control.
- The security mode is disabled. If the door locks work, you need to open the door and close it again. If it remains locked, this indicates wear or damage to the cable that is responsible for unlocking. It is necessary to check all power lines connected to the microprocessor signaling device using a tester. The user should ring all contact elements; it would be useful to perform a visual check of the wires for integrity. If all electrical circuits are intact, then you need to diagnose the fuses. Damaged devices are replaced, the same goes for wires. It is recommended to additionally wrap new electrical circuits with electrical tape to prevent rapid wear and damage.
Problems with the central locking
With such a malfunction, the car door lock button may become stuck. To find the cause of the problem, you need to ring all contacts and check the integrity of the wires. Oxidation on the cables is removed by cleaning, and damaged elements are replaced with new ones.
It is possible that the ground contact has become loose from the central locking control unit. A control module malfunction can be eliminated by replacing the device or reflashing it.
Video about repairing the central lock
The “Madeinhome” channel in its video showed in detail the procedure for restoring the electric central locking drive.
Problem with opening doors after autostart
If the car does not lock or open when autostarting, this may be due to two reasons:
- Incorrect connection to the central locking control power lines. To eliminate the malfunction, you need to reconnect the two contacts of the anti-theft system, which are responsible for controlling the locking products. But this is recommended to be done only if there are no problems in the electrical circuits through which the seat belts are connected.
- There is a conflict in the operation of the immobilizer and the alarm control unit. In the event of such a malfunction, the module will not allow the power unit to start in automatic mode, but the engine will start with the key. To fix the problem, you will need to install an immobilizer bypass.
Problems after replacing the battery
If the alarm stops working after replacing the battery, the communicator must be reprogrammed to perform repairs.
This is done this way:
- The ignition in the car turns off.
- The button to enter the service mode is pressed seven times. This key is installed discreetly and is usually located under the instrument panel in the cabin.
- The engine is started. After the start, the system will begin counting sound signals. At the moment when their number reaches seven, you need to simultaneously press buttons 2 and 3 on the remote control. The device should sound a melodic signal.
- The ignition in the car turns off. The external lights should blink five times.
Problems with signal delivery or recognition
If the system does not allow you to arm the car the first time, this may be due to a malfunction of the actuator installed in the driver's door. Your device may need to be adjusted to correct the problem. Most likely, the actuator cannot press the rod installed in the door all the way, as a result of which it remains in the “open” position.
There are two ways to fix the problem:
- Remove the trim from the corresponding door and adjust the actuator on the rod. Perhaps this element is simply stuck and needs to be lubricated.
- Replace the two-wire activator with a five-wire one. After a successful change, you need to transfer to this device the ability to control the central locking from the standard remote control. This option is the most difficult to implement, but at the same time the most effective.
Other reasons
Other reasons that can lead to a similar problem:
- Failure to activate protective mode for the vehicle. When security is disabled, the door locks are locked, and when it is deactivated, they are locked. The problem is that the communicator is not functioning correctly, so it needs to be reprogrammed.
- Transceiver or microprocessor location is incorrect. The control unit also reacts to the presence of electronic equipment installed nearby.
- Radio interference in the area. A decrease in signal quality, as well as its absence, may be due to the presence of “noise”, as well as the dense architecture of the area. The low range of the communicator is sometimes associated with the presence of transformer substations or manufacturing plants nearby.

Reprogramming required
If the Starline alarm does not close the doors using the key fob, does not respond to commands immediately, or other malfunctions are observed, try registering the key again.
To do this, according to the instructions for the Starline security kit, model A91, you need to press the Valet key 7 times with the ignition off.
After the sound alert sounds 7 times, press keys 2 and 3 on the key fob. Hold until the siren sounds. Repeat the action with the next remote control. When finished, turn off the ignition and wait for the side lights to flash 5 times. Ready.
If you have a different alarm model, the action algorithm can be found in the technical manual.
What to do if the alarm stops responding to the key fob?
Good to know
If the alarm stops responding to the key fob, the only option to disable the anti-theft system is emergency deactivation.
A special password may be required to complete a task. Depending on your system settings, the code may not be used.
On Starline A1 and A4 models, emergency shutdown without a password is carried out as follows:
- The car door opens.
- The ignition is activated. The system must be left turned on for 20 seconds.
- Press the button to enter the alarm service mode three times.
- The ignition is turned off. Security mode must be deactivated.
On the same alarm models, emergency shutdown using a code is performed as follows:
- The car door opens, the ignition is turned on and the engine starts.
- Using the service button, enter the first digit of the password. The number of clicks must correspond to the symbol.
- Then the ignition is turned off and immediately on.
- Using the service button, you enter the second digit of the password. After turning off the ignition, the security mode should turn off.
Broken wire, damaged end switches
If the Starline A91 alarm does not close the doors with the key fob, make sure that the wire leading to the central locking is intact. Using a multimeter, check all electrical lines connected from the doors to the central alarm unit. Ring the contact elements, and also visually inspect the wires for breaks. If the problem is not found, diagnose the fuses and check the power supply to the limit switches (wires from the limit switches to the Starline system unit).
Damaged elements need to be replaced, new wires, to increase service life, do not forget to wrap with electrical tape.

Signal recognition problem
Often the Starline alarm does not lock the car due to a broken actuator in the driver's door. This is a thing that directly pulls the iron rod inside the door and closes the lock (or opens it). If the rod is not pressed all the way, the door will not close.
- The actuator must be lubricated to operate without jamming. To do this, carefully remove the upholstery from the door. After lubrication, adjust the thrust;
- Replace the two-wire actuator with a five-wire one, the latter works flawlessly. It is better to entrust this work to the service center specialists.

The main causes of central locking malfunction
p, blockquote 19,0,0,0,0 –>
The main causes of malfunction of the central electronic locking system are:
p, blockquote 20,0,0,0,0 –>
- malfunction of electrical wiring, especially in places of corrugated hoses and connectors for entering the motor (up to a quarter of all failures);
- improper adjustment and operation of limit switches, power windows, window regulators;
- incorrect adjustment or wear of the closing mechanism of the motor, wear of the suspension of the motor;
- damage to rods and plastic tips;
- malfunction of the door lock drive;
- malfunction of power window drives;
- failure of the engine control buttons;
- malfunction of the power window control buttons;
- blown fuses;
- malfunction of the electronic control units included in the central locking system.
In modern cars, they try to structurally combine electronic door controls into a single whole with drives, limit switches and control buttons.
p, blockquote 21,0,0,0,0 –>
With the combined option, the probability of failure of the central locking system is reduced significantly. This reduces repair and maintenance time. To carry out repairs, for example, the driver's door, a unit replacement (entirely) of just one central drive with a control unit and limit switches is required. This, of course, negatively affects the cost of repairs.
p, blockquote 22,0,0,0,0 –>
Independent circuit repair of the central locking system without the appropriate experience and knowledge is almost impossible. However, some typical faults can be eliminated if they are not related to damage to the electrical wiring.
