The UAZ Patriot is used for driving both on asphalt and off-road. Oil must be added to UAZ Patriot axles after the vehicle has traveled a certain distance recommended by the manufacturer. This will prevent rapid wear of transmission components.

Why is an oil change necessary?

The UAZ Patriot car has a 4x4 wheel arrangement. When driving, torque from the power unit to the wheel mechanisms is transmitted through the axles. The rear axle is constantly engaged, the front axle is connected if necessary.

The bridges are equipped with gearboxes that reduce torque. When driving a car, the gears of the gearboxes constantly rotate and are subjected to high loads.

Lubrication in the bridge mechanism performs two functions:

  1. Reducing friction between rotating parts. This extends the service life of components;
  2. Cooling. Rotating parts with good sliding heat up less. Thanks to this, the high-strength metal from which the components are made does not lose its properties.

What fluids are needed for Patriot to work?

The domestic UAZ Patriot, which has a 409 engine, and a number of other cars that are similar in their mechanisms and design, are required to have the above-mentioned refueling tanks, which are presented in the form of tanks made of plastic and located in various units. It is in such devices that different working fluids are located. Check out the list of working fluids present in the UAZ Patriot:

  • Transmission and engine oils are filled into the power unit, transfer case, as well as gearboxes and axles.
  • Antifreeze or antifreeze is required for heating the interior and cooling the engine;
  • Depending on the design of the power plant, diesel fuel or gasoline.
  • Liquid intended for glass washers, poured into the rear and windshield washer reservoirs.
  • Brake fluid is poured into the clutch system, plus into the brake mechanism.

Next, we will present the digital values according to which it is necessary to fill certain working fluids into the corresponding mechanisms and units.

Which oil to choose for replacement

During operation of the UAZ Patriot, the parts of the front and rear axles wear out. Chips that appear during wear enter the lubricant. This leads to deterioration in the quality of the lubricant. Chips getting into rotating mechanisms can cause them to jam. It is necessary to change the oil regularly.

ATTENTION: When driving aggressively, it is necessary to change the lubricant in the axles more often than stated in the operating manual.

Some car owners are wondering what kind of oil to pour into UAZ Patriot axles? The manufacturer recommends using gear oil with a viscosity of 75W/90. This lubricant will increase the service life of parts.

The gearbox on every car is an important component of any vehicle, so its serviceability is an important factor. The SUV also has a gearbox, thanks to which it is possible to move at different speeds. In addition to the main parts, the gearbox is filled with oil, which requires periodic replacement

In this material we will pay attention to the process of changing the oil in the gearbox on a UAZ Patriot. How to change the oil, when it is needed and what determines this period

When to change the oil

According to the recommendation of the plant, new oil is poured into the UAZ Patriot axles every 40 thousand mileage. The first replacement is carried out after passing 15 - 20 thousand kilometers. This is due to the fact that the rotating parts are not ground in. A large amount of chips gets into the lubricant. This leads to a deterioration in its quality. HELP: Wear of oil seals and seals can lead to oil leakage or water entering the axle when driving off-road.

Information on the types of oil required

From synthetic gear oils:

ZIC GF TOP. This oil is one of the most popular today. The oil is ideal for many vehicle components, including the transfer case, when operating in regions with low temperatures, since it is resistant to fairly low temperatures. A separate feature of this lubricating fluid is that there are practically no fakes on the market now; at least you can purchase fake oil with an extremely low probability. This is explained by the fact that the original is sold in a canister, which is made using a special technology, which is what makes the difference. According to numerous reviews, this oil helps reduce noise in the transmission system.

  • Resistance to chemical processes (including oxidation and destruction of sealing materials);
  • The presence of antifriction properties;

From semi-synthetic oils:

LIQUI MOLY HYPOID-GETRIEBEOIL TDL 75W-90. A universal lubricating fluid manufactured by a well-known German manufacturer. In addition to versatility of use, this brand has excellent anti-friction properties, increased wear resistance and much more. In terms of price-quality ratio, this gear oil is one of the best in its segment.

Its main advantages are:

  • Universal application;
  • Availability of excellent anti-corrosion properties;
  • Reasonable price per canister.

From mineral oils:

LIQUI MOLY GETRIEBEOIL 85W-90

. This is a mineral lubricating fluid from a German manufacturer. It differs from most of its analogues in the highest quality of those components that are present in the oil. In addition, the liquid is supplemented with special additives, which, together with the first point, gives the product excellent properties, which in turn ensures reliable operation of the mechanical unit. Due to its resistance to a wide range of temperatures, this gear oil can be used all year round. At harsh temperatures, the oil does not thicken, which ensures effective lubrication of the rubbing elements. When using this oil, the seals of the manual transmission and transfer case will not be damaged, since it is resistant to chemical processes.

Its main advantages are:

  • High wear resistance;
  • High resistance to low temperature operating conditions;
  • Universal application.

TOTAL TRANSMISSION GEAR 8 75W-80

. In terms of versatility and availability, this transmission fluid is also very popular among owners of foreign and domestic passenger cars. The oil has a very good value for money. Unlike most other mineral oils, this product has extended drain intervals.

Its main advantages are:

  • Excellent value for money;
  • Optimal fluidity in any temperature conditions;
  • Optimal viscosity in any temperature conditions;
  • High resistance to low temperature operating conditions.

LUKOIL 80W90 TM-4

. The Russian company Lukoil is today the leader among domestic producers. This was facilitated not only by the very reasonable cost, but also by the fact that there are special additives that give the oil beneficial properties. It has a universal purpose, and therefore can be used not only in gearboxes, but also in transfer cases. It has excellent wear resistance, anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties.

Its main advantages are:

  • Reasonable price per canister;
  • The composition contains complex elements;
  • Good resistance to low temperature operating conditions.
  • Effective lubrication.

Good afternoon everyone. The topic of today's article is oil in the rear axle of a UAZ. I think you’ve already guessed from the title what the article is about, so there won’t be the usual brief review for our site.

Let's agree on the shore that there is no point in making a gradation based on cars, i.e. the bridge of the loaf, hunter and patriot is no different - SPICER is installed from the factory today. And the “collective farms” and “voyaki” bridges are much less demanding on oil than current bridges. Accordingly, there is no difference which UAZ and which bridge. Recommendations for choosing oil are valid for all UAZ vehicles of all years of manufacture.

Selection by oil type.

Classics of the genre - synthetics, semi-synthetics and mineral water. It would seem - pour whatever is more expensive and change it according to the instructions and you will be happy... but not everything is so simple...

The choice of oil for the rear axle, specifically in the case of a UAZ, is not obvious. The fact is that oil of the same viscosity characteristic varies greatly in price depending on the type. Mineral water Lukoil GL5 85W90 costs about 300 rubles per liter, synthetic mannol of similar viscosity already costs 800 rubles for the same “litrushka”.

Now why is it difficult to choose - if you often go to the forest (and how could it be otherwise with an UAZ), and constantly storm puddles and swamps, water will inevitably get into bridges through breathers. Water in oil is his guaranteed death... and operating the bridge on a cocktail of oil and water will not improve his health. Therefore, if you operate a UAZ only in the summer for trophy raids, it is cheaper to pour mineral water and change it at the first suspicion of water ingress!

In winter, synthetics definitely rule, due to greater temperature stability. A car running on synthetics does not need to be “rolled out”; it can drive almost as soon as the engine warms up and due to the viscosity of the oil in the transmission, it saves a lot of fuel! In fact, my gasoline consumption decreased from 18 to 17 liters after I changed the oil in the axles and gearbox to synthetic!

About semi-synthetics...

This oil should not be considered. The fact is that this is an ordinary mineral water with added additives, in fact it is the same mineral water, but more expensive... If you want to pay the labor of marketers, semi-synthetics are your choice, but for a car it makes no sense - in winter it thickens like mineral water, and in summer there is no difference...

We agreed - in the summer, if we constantly knead the dirt, use mineral water and change it more often, in the winter - synthetics. If we drive around the city all year round and use the UAZ as an ass-cart, it is better to completely switch to synthetics. There is no point in considering semi-synthetics.

Selection by viscosity.

There is often a recommendation to pour NIGROL into military bridges and collective farms. Nigrol is a residue (waste) from the direct distillation of oil mixed with asphalt tar!

So here are the UAZ drivers’ colleagues. Such oil has not existed in nature for 60 years, and what is now sold under the brand name nigrol is TEP-15, it cannot be called nigrol….

The design of the UAZ differential is not well thought out, and the gears have a high slip coefficient; therefore, pouring low-quality oil is unacceptable! On nigrol the bridge will howl very quickly, on TAda - depending on your luck!

The plant recommends filling the bridge with oil with a viscosity according to SAE, 85w-90

. The manufacturer is not important! Change the oil on time and do not come into contact with burnt (left) oil. Personally, I use 75w-90

this is it (yes it comes in gl4, gl5 and gl4/5, I pour the last 2 depending on what is available):

If the axle howls (yes, on a UAZ it happens that the axle makes noise louder than the gearbox and transfer case combined), it is permissible to increase the viscosity of the oil in the axle to 85w-140,

It was in this type of oil that the author of this article used Hunter for 2 years, i.e. the bridge howled, thick oil was poured in, and the UAZ was sold with this oil!

This is interesting: How can you clean spark plugs?

Changing the oil in the front axle of the UAZ Patriot

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, it is necessary to replace the heated lubricant. To do this you need to drive 4–6 kilometers. Warm grease has a thinner consistency and flows out of the drain hole faster. At the end of the movement, the lubricant is replaced as follows:

  • Install the UAZ Patriot on a pit, lift or overpass. The site must be level, without a side slope;
  • Immobilize the vehicle. To do this, shoes are installed under the wheels;
  • Prepare a container for collecting waste material. The container volume must be at least 2 liters. To facilitate the process, it is necessary to select a container with a large neck;
  • Unscrew the filler plug. This is necessary to supply air to the bridge cavity. If there is insufficient air in the cavity, a vacuum is formed. The plug is located below the middle of the crankcase;

  • Unscrew the drain plug. It is located at the bottom of the crankcase. The plug is unscrewed counterclockwise. To open, a 12 mm hexagon is required;
  • Clean the plugs from oil accumulations, dirt and metal shavings;
  • Screw in the drain plug until it stops;
  • Fill with new lubricant. The filler neck is located at the top. You need to fill in the lubricant using a specialized syringe;

Let's sum it up

UAZ Patriot transmission units are designed to operate in aggressive operating conditions, and therefore are characterized by increased endurance. Despite this, their operational period directly depends on the owner’s compliance with the regulations for their maintenance. Irregular oil changes or completely ignoring them can cause vehicle failure, reducing its handling, maneuverability and safety on the road.

It is not difficult to carry out routine maintenance of axles, transfer cases and gearboxes at home, but it is advisable to replace the transmission oil in all components, which, on the one hand, will allow you not to get confused about the timing of re-replacement, and on the other hand, will extend the life of the car. And, most importantly, do not skimp on the quality of the lubricant; the operational period of components, assemblies and the vehicle as a whole depends on this.

Changing the oil in the rear axle of the UAZ Patriot

The procedure for changing the lubricant for the rear axle differs only in the amount of fluid poured. To replace:

  1. Place the car on the pit;
  2. Clean the drain and filler plugs with a wire brush;
  3. Using a 12 mm hexagon, unscrew the filler plug;
  4. Open the drain hole, having previously placed a container underneath to collect the waste liquid;
  5. Drain the used oil;
  6. Clean the internal surfaces of the plugs from metal shavings. A rag is used for this;
  7. Close the drain hole with a plug;
  8. Using a specialized device, pour new lubricant into the crankcase;
  9. Close the filler hole with a plug.

IMPORTANT: After completing the procedure, you must wipe off the grease from the outside of the crankcase. A dry surface will allow you to detect leaks in time during vehicle operation.

After the process, it is necessary to check the functionality of the breathers.

When heated, the liquid in the crankcase expands, displacing the air mass. A malfunction of the breather can lead to failure of oil seals or seals.

Procedure

The procedure for replacing lubricant in Patriot transmission units is not particularly complicated, however, it requires patience and attentiveness from the performer. To complete the work in full, you will need to drain the used fluid from each of the system components one by one, replacing it with new lubricant. For this purpose, it is first necessary to prepare new oil in a volume sufficient for replacement, a set of car keys, containers for used fluid, as well as work clothes.

The task of replacing fluid in transmission units is carried out from the bottom of the car. In service centers, special lifts are used to ensure unhindered access to drain openings; at home, it will be enough to drive the vehicle onto a pit or overpass.

Before performing the operation, it is important to drive an SUV for about ten kilometers so that the lubricant in the system warms up to operating temperature. Under the influence of temperatures, it will become liquid and will merge faster and better from the aggregates.

Further measures are carried out in accordance with the work schedule for each transmission unit.

Changing the oil in axles

The procedures for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot axles do not differ in execution technology, so let’s look at the procedure for implementing the tasks using the rear axle as an example. In practice, you can successfully perform a replacement by following simple instructions from the car manufacturer:

  1. Locate the drain and fill caps, which are located on the rear axle housing. First, you need to clean the surfaces adjacent to the openings with a metal brush from dirt to avoid it getting into the system.
  2. Next, unscrew the filler plug to relieve pressure, after which you can unscrew the cover of the drainage hole, having previously placed a waste container under it.
  3. While the oil is draining, the plugs must be thoroughly cleaned of metal shavings that may accumulate on the inside of the caps during operation of the machine. After the oil has drained, the oil drain plug is installed in place and clamped with the recommended force.
  4. Using a technical syringe, lubricant is poured into the oil filler opening until it begins to flow out of the hole. This procedure will require about 1.3 liters of oil, depending on the quality of the waste drain.
  5. Don't forget to tighten the filler cap.

The oil change in the front axle of a UAZ Patriot is carried out in a similar way, with the only difference being that the oil filler and drain plugs must be looked for on the front axle housing. The front axle housing will contain no more than 1.4 liters of lubricant. At this point, the procedure for replacing the lubricant in UAZ Patriot axles can be considered successfully completed. Then you can move on to changing the oil in the transfer case and gearbox.

Changing the lubricant in the transfer case

The methodology for changing the oil in the transfer case of a UAZ Patriot is practically no different from the procedure for changing transmission fluid in axles. To perform the procedure, you will need to find the drain and filler holes, clean the surfaces one by one from dirt accumulations and unscrew the filler plug. Then the waste is removed into the prepared container through the drain opening. Once the liquid has drained, you need to tighten the drain plug and fill the oil through the filling opening using a technical syringe to the limit, which will be a little more than two and a half liters in volume.

Along with changing the oil in the axles and transfer case, it is recommended to change the lubricant in the gearbox, the technology of which is the same as in previous situations. When pouring new oil into the gearbox, the level should be monitored using a special dipstick with which the car is equipped. After filling and running in the car, you will need to recheck the level in the gearbox; you may need to top up the oil to normal.

After replacing the lubricant in all transmission components, you need to start the car and drive it for several kilometers, after which you drive it onto the overpass again and check all the joints for fluid leaks, and if necessary, tighten the plugs more tightly.

Amount of liquid to be filled

When pouring oil into the axles of a UAZ Patriot, you need to know the crankcase volume. The liquid is poured to the bottom edge of the filler neck. The UAZ manufacturer indicates in the operating manual the volumes of the front and rear axles. They are:

  • For the rear axle – 1300 ml;
  • More fluid is placed in the front axle. Its volume is 1400 ml.

REFERENCE: Some owners of UAZ Patriot cars note that real figures exceed the volumes specified by the manufacturer.

Patriot refueling volumes

UAZ Patriot refueling parameters correspond to the following values:

  1. Fuel tanks. The left gas tank holds up to 36 liters of liquid fuel. According to the data in the instructions, the right tank has the same volume. Actual figures may slightly exceed those stated. This means that 1-3 liters more fuel can be filled into the tanks.
  2. Engine lubrication system. The volume of this element is 7 liters. The lubrication system of the UAZ Patriot 31631 holds only 4 liters of oil.
  3. Engine cooling and interior heating system. The tank can be filled with 12 liters of coolant. The radiator volume with longitudinal pipes reaches 14 liters.
  4. Manual transmission. The capacity of this unit is 2.5 liters.
  5. Transfer system housing. The tank volume of this part of the car is 800 ml.
  6. Rear and front axles. The capacities of these SUV elements differ from each other. The front axle holds up to 1.4 liters of oil. The volume of the rear element is 1.5 liters. The actual capacity of the rear axle housing is slightly higher than stated. Filling with more oil will help maintain the functionality of this unit. All working parts of the system must be immersed in lubricant.
  7. Hydraulic power steering column. For most modifications of Patriot cars, this figure is 1.1 liters. The power steering of the UAZ-31631 holds 1.3 liters.
  8. Steering gear. The capacity is 250 ml. The volume of the brake mechanism is 0.6 l.
  9. Window washer tank. Up to 5 liters of liquid are poured here.

The shock absorbers (0.3 l) and clutch drive (0.18 l) have the smallest capacity. The owner must be familiar with all the parameters of filling containers. The necessary information can be found in the user manual.

Equipment and materials

To change the oil in the axles of a UAZ vehicle, the following equipment and materials are required:

  1. Wire brush. Necessary for cleaning plugs from dust, dirt and oil deposits;
  2. Container for collecting liquid. The container must be of sufficient volume with a wide neck. A cut plastic canister or other container will do;
  3. Hexagon. A tool designed to open plugs. Supplied by the manufacturer with the vehicle;
  4. Rags. Used to clean the inside of corks. Use a rag to wipe away oil spills after the procedure;
  5. Transmission lubricant. Oil of the required viscosity is used;
  6. A specialized syringe or other device designed to inject liquid;
  7. Lamp or lantern. Used to illuminate the workplace.

Safety precautions when carrying out work independently

When performing the procedure, you must follow safety rules. To prevent spontaneous movement of the car, anti-roll devices are installed under the wheels.

Before work, you need to prepare your work clothes:

  • Glasses. It is necessary to work in safety glasses. They prevent transmission lube and dirt from getting into your eyes;
  • Gloves. When the plug is unscrewed, the liquid pouring out of the crankcase gets on your hands. It is necessary to wear long rubberized gloves;

The fluid drained from the crankcase is at a high temperature. To avoid burns when draining the oil, a person should be kept at a distance from the drain hole. The container for collecting waste fluid should be kept as close to the crankcase as possible. When unscrewing the plug, you must hold it firmly. Failure to follow this rule may result in the plug falling into the container containing the waste liquid.

From the above it follows that changing the oil in the axles of a Patriot car is a procedure that can be performed by a person with minimal technical knowledge. Replacement is carried out at intervals specified by the manufacturer.

Engine

Check the oil level regularly and top it up to ensure proper operation, especially before long trips.

Check the level when the car is on a flat horizontal platform. After stopping the engine, the oil level should be checked no earlier than 15 minutes later.

The amount of oil required to top up from the “MIN” mark to the “MAX” mark is approximately 1 liter.

Attention!

Filling engine oil at a level above the “MAX” mark will lead to disruption of normal engine operation: increased oil waste, increased toxicity, contamination and failure of spark plugs.

Changing the oil must be done together with replacing the oil filter. Drain the oil with the engine warm.

To change the oil, place the car on a level surface or overpass, open the engine cover and unscrew the engine oil sump drain plug with a 24 mm wrench. The oil drains for at least 10 minutes.

Be careful when draining the oil - the oil may be very hot.

Before tightening the drain plug, check the condition of the sealing gasket. Replace the damaged gasket.

At the same time as changing the oil, the oil filter must be replaced. Use a special wrench to loosen the oil filter. If there is no such key, pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver and, using it as a lever, unscrew the filter, punching the filter as close to the bottom as possible so as not to damage the fitting. You can also use a double-folded strip of coarse sandpaper, wrap it around the filter and push it out of place with your hands. Before installing the filter, lubricate the rubber filter gasket with engine oil. Screw the filter onto the fitting until the rubber gasket of the filter touches the surface of the cylinder block and then tighten it by hand ¾ of a turn.

Fill with fresh oil to the top mark on the dipstick and start the engine. After turning off the emergency pressure lamp, stop the engine and make sure there is no oil leakage from under the filter gasket. Allow the oil to drain into the crankcase for 10 minutes and check the oil level again, adding if necessary.

When replacing one brand of oil with another, it is necessary to flush the engine lubrication system. To do this you need:

  • Drain the used oil from the crankcase of a warm engine;
  • pour special flushing or replacement oil 2-4 mm above the upper “MAX” mark of the indicator;
  • start the engine and let it run at minimum crankshaft speed for at least 10 minutes;
  • drain the special flushing or replacement oil;
  • replace the oil filter;
  • add fresh oil;
  • start the engine. After turning off the emergency oil pressure lamp
  • stop the engine and check the oil level after 15 minutes. If necessary, add oil.

Ulyanovsk residents recommend filling their engines with synthetic oil with a viscosity index depending on the operating temperature. The manufacturer recommends original oils of its own production:

UAZ Motor Oil Premium 5W-40 for the central region;

Judging by the tests carried out by the oil club and other resources, this oil is almost identical to the familiar Lukoil Lux 5w40 SN/CF

A liter of original UAZ oil costs 250 rubles, and Lukoil is around 400 rubles.

Do not mix oils of different brands and with different viscosities!

Checking the level and topping up

Before starting work, you need to take the selected oil, a size 12 hex key, a syringe for filling, and a clean rag. Refueling is done as follows:

  1. Place the car on a lift or inspection pit.
  2. Clean the filler valve with a stiff brush and wipe with a rag. The normal fluid level is limited to the bottom of the valve located on the crankcase cover. If this indicator differs, topping up is required.
  3. Remove the filler plug. The part is wiped and put aside.
  4. Add oil using a syringe. Check the level again. If it exceeds the norm, the excess will leak.
  5. Screw in the plug and remove any remaining grease with a rag. They check whether the car starts and evaluate the performance of the transfer unit.
