If we take cars of a similar class, the market can offer the following options:

• Nissan Terrano - in its current incarnation this is the same Duster with its 210 mm.
• Lifan X60 is only 179 mm, and to this we must add the widespread prejudice about Chinese “quality”.
• The Lifan X50 with its 200 mm figure as a crossover is noticeably better than the X60, but the lack of even engine and gearbox protection in the basic configuration seriously limits the capabilities of the car out of the box.
• Although the Lada Kalina Cross is not a direct competitor to the XRay, 200 mm to the crankcase protection and a lower price can still sway the buyer in its favor.
• The Suzuki Vitara is not only more expensive, but also 10mm lower than the XRay.
• Suzuki SX4 is lower than “Ray”, in any variant: if the all-wheel drive car has a difference of only 5 mm, then the front-wheel drive car loses all 20 mm to the XRay.

What does X-Ray have to offer?

Comfort comes first in the Lada XRay. Everything that the eye stops at speaks about this: high-quality upholstery, an advanced multimedia system, a climate control system with a unique cooled glove box, a well-organized interior space with many niches for storing necessary small items, cup holders and an organizer in the wheel well and under trunk floor, rain and light sensors, etc. Much attention was paid to active/passive safety.

The car is offered with two engine options: 106 and 122 hp. pp., in the second case, automatic transmission is also possible. The Lada X Ray model is not declared as an SUV, which is indicated only by front-wheel drive and not all-wheel drive. However, the obtained characteristics still indicate the increased cross-country ability of the new product. At the same time, the designers did not forget about comfort inside the car; there is enough space in the cabin.

Everything speaks about a good application for high cross-country ability of the Lada XRay. However, you shouldn’t expect an extreme trip and conquest of uncharted territories from X Ray. Although he is very agile, he is still more of a city dweller. The car can be classified as an SUV (sports-utility vehicle) or, more simply, a jeep: station wagon body type, spacious interior, increased ground clearance. It has everything a dynamic car needs for active travel.

The peculiarity of the Lada XRay is its combination of excellent interior comfort, dynamics and speed in the concrete jungle or, at most, on light off-road conditions on an undeveloped country road.

The crossover is already in its basic version

Referring to the complex landscape of Russian roads and the breadth of applications, AvtoVAZ engineers proposed creating a car that offers increased ground clearance even from the base model. This is where the life story of the crossover began. The clearance of the Lada XRay was no less than 195 mm. The declared characteristics no longer apply to a standard city car, but to a comfortable, solid and dynamic all-terrain vehicle.

As you can see, the declared 195 mm for the Lada XRay is the maximum figure, if you do not take into account all-wheel drive 4X4 off-road models. If desired, you can try to increase the ride height by replacing tires and wheels, for example, by switching to a size of 16 inches. At the same time, they are interested in real numbers. The thing is that often the parameters specified by the manufacturer turn out to be overestimated in practice. Of course, not everyone does this, and not always. However, the presence of this kind of precedents made many people rather skeptical about the data provided by the manufacturer. Here people trust the reviews of those who have already purchased the car they are interested in more.

Real ground clearance of the Lada X-Ray

Not long ago, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began producing the XRay hatchback, which looks very much like a crossover. The very impressive ground clearance also contributed to this deceptive impression. According to the manufacturer, the ground clearance of the X Ray (Ray) is 195 millimeters. We will also present other figures that are important in terms of cross-country ability. In particular:

• front and rear overhangs – 830 and 743 millimeters;
• approach and departure angles are 21 and 34 degrees.

Meanwhile, the proverb “trust, but verify,” as it turns out, also applies to the figures announced by AvtoVAZ. No, there is no deception of buyers here. It’s just that the manufacturer, when measuring ground clearance, apparently “forgot” to install crankcase protection. With this element, the vehicle's ground clearance is reduced to 190 millimeters. However, this figure is good enough even for Russian roads somewhere in the outback. And the difference is not so critical as to declare deception - rather, a little trick. In fairness, it is worth recalling that all automakers are guilty of this kind of tricks, so VAZ is not doing anything reprehensible in this case.

I would also like to note one more point. Surely, many people know that for the production of X-Ray they did not develop a new platform, but borrowed it from the Renault Sandero Stepway, an affordable car with high ground clearance and front-axle drive. Accordingly, VAZ designers simply did not have any special options in terms of changing the ground clearance.

By the way, an excellent budget SUV was previously created on the same platform - Renault Duster, loved by many for its excellent ratio between price and performance characteristics. This model is taller than X-Ray. It turns out that there is still some room for maneuver, albeit small. Accordingly, it is quite possible that the Lada X-Ray will appear with a ground clearance of 205, or even 210 millimeters. However, for now these are just rumors.
