In 2013, two rather striking local announcements took place, which concerned the appearance on the market of the Lada Granta in a liftback body type and the second version of the Lada Kalina. At the time of release, most observers agreed that both cars have a bright and dynamic appearance, and also deserve the widest attention from ordinary buyers.
But no concrete opinion has emerged about which car is better. The visual differences are not that significant, but do they differ in other respects? Today we will try to figure this out, taking into account the pricing policy, as well as technical characteristics.

Description and technical features of the grants
The Lada Granta liftback version has become a bestseller for the manufacturer.
The model has absorbed the best solutions from Russian and world experience in the automotive industry. It is characterized by the distinctive appearance of the exterior. Rounded shapes add elegance to the look, where classic and modern expression are harmoniously intertwined. And this despite the fact that the car belongs to the budget segment of the market. The appearance of the liftback resembles the Lada Granta liftback in the sedan version. But the distinctive point was the presence of a fifth door, which caused a storm of heated debate and discussion. For a long time, the manufacturer could not decide whether to classify this model into one of the classes: liftback or hatchback. The first of the designated categories had an advantage.
The salon has a stylish atmosphere. Everything is concise and does not cause irritation. Practical instrument panel, comfortable steering wheel, many compartments for luggage.
Loading is very simple, which is facilitated by the considerable width of the doorway. The luggage compartment is more spacious compared to the second Kalina and Lada Granta liftback.
For technical equipment, 3 options of 1.6-liter power units are available:
- power 87 "hp";
- with a return of 98 hp. With.;
- with a capacity of 106 horsepower.
A comparison with the Lada Kalina 2 shows that the speed parameters are preferable here. The 106-horsepower version is capable of reaching 176 km/h, and which is better in this regard is quite obvious.
The Lada Kalina 2 station wagon has a new automatic transmission. The reliability of the box leaves much to be desired, even despite the fact that it was assembled by the Japanese.
The cheapest option will please you with a price of 330 thousand rubles. The luxury version is already more expensive – 495 thousand rubles.
As standard, the model is equipped with:

More powerful modifications will please you:

- immobilizer;
- air conditioning;

Having understood the features of each of these models, you need to decide which of them has more balanced parameters. Let's make another comparison: the Lada Granta liftback is endowed with greater originality and brightness of the exterior. The headlights are larger and the bumpers are more distinctive.

The interior of both models has a similar arrangement, however, the LADA Granta liftback has fewer disadvantages. If the interior of the Lada Kalina 2 station wagon will remind you of itself with squeaks in a couple of years, then this is not observed in Grant.
In terms of technical capabilities, if we only touch on the standard versions, the cars are identical. But if we take into account luxury options, then the advantage leans towards the LADA Granta liftback. Here the engine range is wider and the dynamic capabilities are more acceptable.
The price of the LADA Granta liftback is lower than that of its competitor.
Basic modifications have practically no significant differences, and luxury modifications, as noted, are better than the LADA Granta liftback. Which model to choose, which is better, and what to choose – it’s up to you to decide!
Specifications
First of all, when choosing a Priora or Grant 2016, most car owners are interested in the features of the vehicle’s power units.
The Priora can be equipped with two engines, while the Granta has three engines. In principle, the motors are not very different from each other. All of them are naturally aspirated gasoline engines with 4 cylinders and an in-line layout.
The first engine is a 1.6-liter eight-valve petrol engine. The power figure here reaches 87 horsepower. Fuel consumption is 9 liters in the city and just under 6 on the highway. The dynamics are quite respectable – the first hundred takes 12.5 seconds. The maximum speed is 176 kilometers per hour. In case of
Granta, the dynamics will be a little better (acceleration to 100 km/h requires 12.2 seconds), but the maximum speed is only 167 km/h.
The second common motor has the same volume, but with 16 valves. Power is 106 horses. In the combined cycle, the Priora takes 6.8 liters of gasoline, the Grant takes 0.1 liters less. The Priora takes the first hundred in 11.5 seconds, the maximum acceleration is 183 per hour.
Options
If we don’t go into prices and just compare the options available in cars by trim level, we get the following.
Lada Kalina 2 cars in the “standard” configuration, unlike the standard Grants, have electric power steering, driver airbags, a short steering rack, athermal windows, top handrails, a cigarette lighter, an ashtray, power windows for the front doors, 14” wheels, bumpers in body color.
In the “norm” and “luxury” trim levels there is such a range of additional equipment that it’s impossible to say for sure, so let’s compare the “norm” Kalina 2 and the “luxury” Grant since they are approximately the same in price.
Lada Granta in almost the most expensive version (369 thousand rubles) in contrast to Norma Kalina 2 (about the same cost - still unknown):

What you need to know about Grant
In fact, this vehicle is the spiritual successor of the Lada Kalina car. The car first rolled off the assembly line back in 2011. At the same time, the vehicle differs from its predecessor in an improved engine and good sound insulation.
Externally, the model is quite reminiscent of European cars. In addition, the car also has a very good trunk capacity of 500 liters. On the other hand, many car owners agree that driving such a vehicle is not so easy.
You need to spend a lot of time to learn how to fit into turns on the Grant. As a rule, such vehicles are bought by middle-aged people who prefer a calm and measured ride rather than dynamics.
Body and paint
After the release of Granta, many began to measure the thickness of the body and were surprised: the new AvtoVAZ product had a very thin layer of metal body! The manufacturer explained this by saying that for the Granta a completely different metal is used, with better qualities and, in general, equal in characteristics to the first Kalina.
We beg to differ with this and assure you that bending the body of a Granta is not that difficult; the body is really made of thin metal. They even saved on the plastic bumper - the thickness is no more than 2-3mm. At the time of writing, it is not yet known about the thickness of the body of the updated Kalina 2, but if compared with the first Kalina, the Grant is inferior here.
Here we also note the quality of door locking. If everything is still fine on the new Grant, then over time, closing/opening the doors (especially) the rear ones becomes difficult, you need to make an effort. There is no such defect observed on Kalina.
Appearance Features
Appearance is a purely subjective matter. At the same time, it cannot be said that there is no winner in the Prior-Grant confrontation in this nomination. According to reviews from car enthusiasts, the second car is rated much higher (especially when talking about young people).
Granta looks much more dynamic, more youthful and aggressive. In Priora, the features of the dozen are clearly visible.
Even the redesign didn't help get rid of the outdated appearance. Well, for some, such an exterior is already a classic, so this vehicle will also have its fans.
Who is faster and more economical?
Which is better: Granta or Kalina? In many ways, the dynamics indicators depend on the preset gearbox. The Lada Granta (automatic) with the most “vegetable” engine accelerates to hundreds in 12.4 seconds. The most powerful engine allows you to accelerate the Grant in 10.6 seconds (in manual mode). Maximum speed is from 178 to 192 kilometers per hour. As for fuel consumption, this figure ranges from 5.7 to 9.8 liters depending on the internal combustion engine, transmission and operating mode.
The Lada Kalina turned out to be a little slower. Acceleration to hundreds with a medium engine and automatic transmission takes 14.2 seconds. But on a 16-valve engine with a manual transmission, acceleration is exactly 11 seconds. The maximum speed varies from 161 to 180 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption is higher than that of Granta. But these numbers will not significantly affect your budget. A domestic hatchback consumes an average of 6.7 liters of 95 per hundred.
Design
The appearance of both cars at one time made a pleasant impression even on very skeptical experts, who stubbornly believed that the domestic auto industry was not able to produce a beautiful vehicle.
In reality, the external design and interior design of both cars are in no way inferior to foreign analogues of the same price category. Moreover, both Kalina and Granta look very presentable and fresh in appearance.
Viburnum is produced in two modifications, one of which is compact in size, which makes it convenient for a resident of a big city. The other option is very roomy, and this is an important point for large families or avid summer residents.
Granta, meanwhile, looks more representative compared to Kalina. In the sedan version, it is very similar to the C-class models. At the same time, the low price of this machine led to the fact that not the best materials were used for its production. First of all, it is worth noting that the thickness of the body steel is noticeably less than that of Kalina. This means that any accident on the road will result in much more serious damage.
According to reviews, Grants have problems with reliably closing doors after a certain period of operation. At the same time, the interior design of the luggage compartment is quite poor, and it is basically impossible to quietly lower the rear door.
Common features of AvtoVAZ models
The models are very similar in operational parameters. Common features of the two cars:
- Compact, identical dimensions.
- Belonging to the same price range.
- They belong to the same series.
- Manufactured by AvtoVAZ.
- Same power.
- Same fuel tank capacity.
- Almost identical interior.
- There are versions of the body in the form of a hatchback.
- Good reviews from car owners and auto repairmen.
- Same transmission.
- Robotic gearboxes installed.
What to choose
As a result, choosing a Lada Grant or Priora is not so simple. In principle, more people prefer Grant. There is a larger range of engines with transmissions, and the appearance is somewhat more modern.
True, the starting equipment let us down a little, and the interior looks a little old, but these are minor problems. The Priora is chosen by more respectable middle-aged people who value a quiet ride and the classic appearance of the car.

Noise insulation
Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 2 cannot boast of good sound insulation, but if desired, you can install additional one for both Granta and Kalina 2. Slightly quieter than Lada Kalina 2, but up to class B foreign cars, such as Renault Logan and Hyundai Accent, all still falls short. Also, both domestic cars have cheap materials, Granta is especially unlucky - the plastic in it is of low quality, it is easily damaged.
And yet, which is better to buy: Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 2? Despite some differences, these cars are quite similar, and the body type you want will likely be a key factor. If it is not of fundamental importance, and the difference in price is insignificant for you, then it is better to choose the Lada Kalina 2: it is a little more comfortable, a little more beautiful and just a little more modern.
