LED optics are becoming increasingly popular every year. LED lamps for car construction are no exception. Such devices have come to replace classic halogen (xenon) lamps, and not only due to their reduced energy consumption. They do not require frequent replacement.
Which ice lamps are best for cars?
Many drivers are attracted by their resistance to shock and vibration, which is very important in Russian road conditions. They do not need additional time to warm up. Their quick activation is an important component of movement on the road. After all, the quality of road lighting will depend only on which ice lamps are best for your car. This will ensure confident, accident-free driving, clear visibility of the road and timely identification of danger.
Advantages of LED lamps:
- energy efficiency;
- long service life;
- ease of installation;
- intensive work with low energy consumption;
- high light transmission index.
Their disadvantages include the following features:
- cannot be repaired;
- higher cost;
- lack of heating of the headlight glass, which leads to the formation of ice at low temperatures;
- After some time, tarnishing may occur.
Despite these disadvantages, many thrifty car enthusiasts decide to install LEDs. Even in the absence of maintenance, the service life of high-quality lamps with diodes will be many times longer than other light sources.
Design of LED lamps
They are also called LED lamps (from the English “light-emitting diode” - “light-emitting diode”). This lighting source does not contain gases, unlike halogen ones. The design itself is quite simple - the light is produced by a single crystal, which is mounted in a small reflective bowl, and to which power contacts, wire connections, a radiator and a distribution lens are connected. The body of the LED lamp is mainly made of plastic.
An LED lamp is always equipped with a matrix of one of 4 types:
- Regular blue LEDs;
- Diodes according to the RGB standard (red, green, blue - red, blue, green);
- Diodes that are attached to the surface of the light bulb (SMD);
- Diodes that are fixed on the board (COB).
According to the base used in the design (in other words, by type), diode lamps can be marked with various Latin letters and numbers, for example, H11 or W5W. The exact gradation is presented in the ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) - “Document on Consumer Safety of the Economic Commission for Europe”.
Main differences from halogen light sources
The design of the halogen source consists of a tungsten filament, which is enclosed in a sealed glass bulb filled with an inert gas and halogen. Due to the gas, the brightness of the glow increases, so it allows you to increase the heating temperature of the filament. However, the resource of such devices is not durable - only 5,000 hours, while the LED lamp has about 30,000 hours. Moreover, “halogen” lamps have a high heating temperature - approximately 150 degrees Celsius and are absolutely not tolerant of surge voltage. LED sources are much more tolerant in this regard.
Main differences from xenon light sources
With xenon it is still much worse: to light up at full power such a lamp will take up to 3 seconds, and the LED will light up within 0.1 second. The brightness of the xenon lights is also low - approximately 70 MegaCandelas (candles) per 1 square meter. For diodes, this indicator starts from 100 units. There’s nothing to even mention about the service life of xenon – only 3,000 hours.
Advantages of LED lamps
- Reduced energy consumption - compared to halogen or xenon, it is several times lower. Standard consumption of up to 30 W allows you to save fuel. Of course, it cannot be called very noticeable - for every 100 km approximately 0.2 liters of gasoline will be saved. However, with reduced consumption, the load on the battery and, in general, on the entire power system of the machine is reduced.
- Increased light flow - the light temperature of modern diodes varies between 6 thousand - 6.5 thousand Kelvin, which corresponds to a bright sunny day. Imitating natural daylight, rather than bright artificial light, makes driving at night easier. With such light, the eyes become less tired and the road surface is better illuminated.
- Legality of installation - some LEDs can be installed independently at will; such an operation is not prohibited by law (at one time the legality of installing xenon and halogen lamps was in question). Installation is possible on brake lights, turn signals, and working lights in the interior. It is also possible to install head lighting (H7 and H4) without special permits, but only if the car will be operated outside the public road network.
- Extended service life - subject to proper use of LED lamps, they can last up to 10 years.
- Low susceptibility to shocks and vibrations - due to the fact that the design of the diodes does not contain fragile filaments and a glass case, then, in fact, there is nothing there to break when impacted. The thin wires themselves and the semiconductor element are securely fastened and protected by a plastic lens. Keeping in mind the rough Russian roads, this factor will be important.
- Speed of operation - LED lamps turn on to full power 200 milliseconds faster than classic lamps. Thus, installing them in brake lights will allow the car driving behind to react more quickly to the stop of the one in front.
Disadvantages of LED lamps
Their main disadvantage is that during operation they emit a considerable amount of heat in the direction opposite to the flow of light. Thus, their effective service life will directly depend on the quality of the heat removal system. If the heat is not completely removed, this will shorten the life of the lamp by an order of magnitude.
In addition, LED lamps are much more expensive than traditional lamps and are often sold in sets (it is not always possible to find one copy on sale). The price may exceed the cost of conventional ones by 50-60 times, however, this circumstance is more than compensated by the extremely long service life.
LEDs require a rated current to operate, so resistors or additional power sources will have to be used in the vehicle's power system.
Legality of LEDs
LED lighting can only be used if it has been installed at the factory. Traffic police inspectors are well aware of the design features of a particular vehicle. If halogen headlights were previously installed on the car, then reinstalling them is permitted.
What actions are illegal? Installation that will change the design features of the vehicle cannot be carried out. Violations may relate to the color, quantity, type of lamps. In this case, sanctions are imposed in accordance with 12.5 of the Administrative Code.
It is strictly forbidden to install red light fixtures. In this case, rights may be deprived for up to 12 months.
Installation locations for LED lamps in a car
As mentioned above, it is possible to install diodes to provide headlights only in factory conditions (if the car enthusiast will operate the car on public highways). In all other cases, independent installation of lamps is possible. In general, the installation location will depend on the base of the LED source:
- Headlights are often equipped with bulbs with an H7/H4 socket (although in the factory it is possible to install HB3, H3, H11, HB4);
- H11, 10, 8 sockets are suitable for fog lights;
- For direction indicators and side lights, W5, 14HP, P21W and P21 are intended;
- For the main turn signals, T4W, W5W and T10 are used;
- Reversing lights use T20 and W21W sockets;
- Rear brake lights use 5W, P21;
- It is possible to install a T5 base in the cabin.
If the low-beam headlights of a car are equipped with diode light sources with a power of 12 W and having a luminous flux of over a thousand lm, then such a circuit must be provided with a radiator. If these headlights use diodes in the H4 base, then two bulbs with a total power of 17 W are installed at once, one with 1000 lm for low beam, and one with 1500 lm for high beam.
Possible errors when installing LED lamps
The main problems that arise when installing such lamps may be their compatibility with the vehicle's control unit. For example, it may constantly require a connection check. The reason lies in the fact that the car’s computer monitors the presence of a lighting source based on its electricity consumption, and diodes consume little of it, so the control unit may simply not “see” them. The problem can be solved in two ways. Firstly, you can contact a car service center, where at the software level they will “write” into the car’s control unit the presence of an installed LED lamp (an expensive method). Secondly, install a ballast or “fake” yourself, which artificially forces the control unit to consider the LED lamp installed (cheap way). You can purchase such a ballast at any auto store; it is called “LED can-bus”. The price of the device is from 200 to 300 rubles.
Types of socles
There is a fairly wide variety of bases that are used for installing LED lighting and lighting devices. But not all of them are universal.
To understand the scope of application of LED car lamps, you should definitely understand the types of bases and understand in what situations each of them is used.
- W3W. A fairly common base for cars. It is used for installing LED auto lamps in the dashboard illumination and for illuminating control buttons. Offered in a wide range of colors, they are in high demand. Lamps with such a base are compact in size. Most often, this base comes with SMD LEDs.
- T10 or W5W. This base is used for installation in side lights, turn signal indicators, interior lighting, luggage compartment lighting, license plate lights, etc. The lamps are distinguished by the presence of two contacts for connection and are made on the basis of various LEDs, including mixed ones. Fiston lamps also belong to the T10 type base. These LEDs are widely used in providing vehicle interior lighting. Each fist-type lamp has a connector to which any 31, 36 or 41 mm fist can be connected.
- 1156 and 1157. Another couple of common sockets for LED lamps. Most often they are used when installing diodes in parking lights, turn signals and brake lights. For socket 1156, automotive single-contact lamps P21W are used. Devices may differ in the different arrangement of protrusions for fixation. P21 and 5W lamps are suitable for 1157 sockets. They are already two-contact; all their series are analogues of single-contact devices. Used in rear brake lights. SMD type diodes and ultra-bright devices are used as a light source.
- H1, H3, H4, HB3, HB4, H7, H11, etc. Such sockets are actively used when equipping LED headlights. Each base has its own distinctive features and may differ depending on the specific vehicle. Therefore, when replacing such devices, the motorist must know which base is relevant for his vehicle. You should also take into account the need for a decoy.
Modern LED lamps are also usually divided into single-beam and double-beam.
The first category includes sockets such as H1, H3, H7, H9, H11, etc. Devices with two beams or double-beams have sockets H4, H13, and others.
To make it easier for a motorist to understand the choice and appropriate LED for his car, it is recommended to look at the technical documentation and study the operating manual. If necessary, you can always contact car service specialists or consult with a representative of an official dealer.
Some properties of LED lamps from different manufacturers
- It is no secret that it is better to purchase equipment such as diode light bulbs from well-known brands. Although Asian manufacturers are widely represented in this market segment today. The following are specific features for different manufacturers:
- Chinese manufacturers often use cheap components, which reduces the service life of the lamp;
- In the same set from a Chinese manufacturer, diodes may have different light temperatures, which will affect the quality of lighting (for example, one diode will shine with white light, the second with yellow);
- In Chinese samples you can often find a poorly designed heat removal system, which again will affect the duration of their use;
- Western models are permanently equipped with ceramic insulators that cannot be melted, even if problems arise with heat dissipation;
- LED lamps from European manufacturers have complete reflection from the lamp, which provides bright and uniform light, they do not blind drivers driving in the oncoming lane and are completely acceptable even for tired eyes;
- As a rule, the declared technical characteristics for LED lamps by Western manufacturers are completely true. If the operating period is indicated at 30,000 hours, then there is no need to doubt it.
Varieties
You cannot choose LED lamps for your car based on the principle that the brightest ones will be the best. Here you need to take into account different selection criteria, technical characteristics and design features of your own machine.
Only based on basic information can we say which LED lamps will be better and what is worth buying for a car so that the lamps work efficiently, help the driver and do not disturb other road users with their glow.
How brightly the LED lamps will shine depends largely on where on the car they are installed. It is logical to assume that the brightest devices are those that work on low and high beam headlights. But this is not a complete list of where LEDs can be used in a car.
LED devices according to their intended purpose can be divided into the following categories:
- Low beam. If you install low-beam diode lamps, you will be able to obtain maximum lighting quality. Here LED is noticeably superior to its halogen counterpart. The light will not be yellowish, but cleaner, closer to natural.
- High beam. No less relevant are high beam lamps made using LED technology. In fact, these are compact panels consisting of LEDs. They fit into a standard headlight reflector and provide effective illumination over long distances.
- Dimensions and signal lights. These devices have low power consumption. They efficiently consume electricity from the on-board network, but at the same time guarantee clear, bright and long-lasting operation. LED dimensions and warning lamps are more noticeable during the daytime compared to competitors.
- Fog lights. There are also fog lamps using LED technology. In practice, it has been proven that their efficiency is higher in comparison with PTF made from halogen lamps. Plus their energy consumption indicators are lower. The quality of light is high.
- Salon lighting. Increasingly, diodes have begun to be installed in the interior from the factory, illuminating various elements, providing light in the cabin, and so on. Plus, LED strips have become widespread. Motorists themselves decorate the car interior with them, creating illumination of different colors and a wide light spectrum. Beautiful, practical and convenient.
That is, LEDs have become widely popular and are being actively introduced into modern cars.
Even budget models can have LED fog lights as standard. And head optics, built entirely on LED lamps, usually become the property of expensive equipment or higher-class cars.

Instead of an epilogue
The market analysis showed that the majority of Russian car enthusiasts prefer to buy Western-made LED lamps. Indeed, even despite their inflated price, you can be more confident in a Western product than in an Asian one. Moreover, you should not buy very cheap counterfeits from online platforms for consumer goods, for example, from AliExpress.
The world famous one receives the most praise for this product category from Russian users. Their light bulbs are made using the highest quality components and, in general, they were one of the first in the world to use this technology and supply similar products for retail sale.
In addition, most consumers note the fact that in Chinese online stores, products have inflated technical characteristics, while domestic or Western sites do not sin with this, providing real information. Thus, we can draw a definite conclusion that when buying LED lamps, focusing solely on price is by no means the best option. It is better to opt for a well-known brand.

conclusions
Most LEDs have become illumination superior to other types of automotive lighting, with output power two or three times that of halogens. When purchasing ice lamps, you need to consider a number of factors that will guarantee your satisfaction with your purchase, which we discussed in this article.
Let us briefly conclude:
- When purchasing lamps, take into account the compatibility of the model (base, design, dimensions).
- It's better to make sure that the headlights are legal and not Chinese knockoffs.
- Because LEDs are much more energy efficient than halogen and other headlights, they use less energy while emitting clean light. This has the effect of improving your fuel consumption, which will save you money.
- When comparing the life cycle costs of LED car headlights, you find that the money saved goes some way to offsetting the cost of the headlight kit itself.
- When choosing samples, be guided by the recommended list of manufacturers and models provided in the articles.
- Although CREE LED lamps are affordable, it is still better to choose CSP.

Counterfeits and bad models
If you visit most Chinese websites and stores that do not have a license, you will encounter low quality products. LED lighting should be purchased only from trusted brands, as it has become more affordable and there is no longer any point in purchasing cheaper Chinese analogues. By purchasing cheap fakes, you will pay 300 rubles less, but you will sacrifice the quality of lighting and durability.
Chinese counterfeits sold by unscrupulous stores most often do not have markings or other international quality marks. Such products do not guarantee reduced power consumption, but will most likely exhibit flickering and overheating problems.
