Just think - the Volzhsky Automobile Plant did not make changes to the design of the VAZ 2121 Niva, released in 1977, for almost 16 years! Such an original car has justified itself. However, nothing lasts forever - in the early 90s, the Niva began to become obsolete. Therefore, it was decided to carry out some modernization of the existing car.
The first result of this modernization was the appearance of a restyled version of the Niva - VAZ 21213, which entered mass production in 1994. The car received the name “Niva Taiga” from the designers. However, it turned out to be so similar in appearance to its predecessor that car enthusiasts pretended that they had not noticed the appearance of the new model, continuing to call the “Taiga” “Niva”.
Indeed, the external similarity between the VAZ 2121 and the VAZ 21213 is obvious - they are still the same three-door, four-seat all-terrain station wagon. But there are still differences. And with a more detailed study, they become increasingly easier to notice. Thus, the rear door was extended to the bumper, thereby reducing the loading height. The rear light block, which the Niva inherited from the VAZ 2106, was replaced with its own square one. The atmosphere inside the cabin has also changed - its comfort has increased (largely due to the installation of updated front seats), a new dashboard has appeared (borrowed from the VAZ 2108). Otherwise, the appearance of the Niva Taiga remained the same as that of the VAZ 2121.
