The fuel filter Ford Focus 1, 2, 3 modifications is the most important part of the fuel system. The operating instructions recommend replacing the fuel filter every 30 thousand km. However, given the quality of our domestic gasoline and the dustiness of the roads, it is better to replace it after 15–20 thousand kilometers.
In this article, we will give you the most detailed information on replacing the Ford Focus 1, 2, 3 fuel filter, so that you can change the cleaning element yourself at home. Following our guide exactly will allow you to successfully complete this operation in 15–20 minutes.
Tools for replacing the fuel filter Ford Focus 1
Before you begin work on replacing the fuel filter on a Ford Focus 1, you should prepare the necessary tools. Therefore, stock up in advance:
- socket heads for “8” and “7”;
- wrench with extension;
- new fine filter
- container for draining gasoline
The fuel filter in a car of this modification is located in a recess in the gas tank under the rear seat, so to carry out the work you will need an inspection hole, overpass or lift.

- Hairdryer
Notes:
The whole epic began with the fact that I was driving along highway 110, and when I pressed the shoe to the floor, the revolutions did not rise above 3k and the car jerked. Somehow I got home and started looking through the Internet. Good people immediately said, change the fuel pump filters. After reading more than one BZ, I decided that I had nowhere to remove the tank, and the tank was full at that time.
It was decided to cut a hole under the passenger seat.
Replacing the fine and coarse filter of the fuel pump in a Ford Focus 2
1. I was glad that I didn’t have to wait, I reached under the seat, took it off, removed the pockets, began to move the carpet and was a little dumbfounded. Everything was already cut out!
The car's mileage is currently 136,668 km. I bought it a year and a half ago with a mileage of 116 km. Before that, I went to MSC for 6 years and in my city for a year. And at that moment I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. But then, thinking that my conscience was clear, I realized that the hole saved me about 40–50 minutes of time. Having prepared the car, I went home. The next morning my father and I came to the parking lot.
2. I read that when you remove the pipe that supplies gasoline to the main line, almost half a liter pours out of it. They covered everything with rags, began to move the hose, and, lo and behold, a couple of drops dripped from it. Probably because the car sat overnight.
3. We began to unscrew the pump cover. Many people hit it with a hammer, but it was difficult for us, but it came from our hands.
4. Then they carefully began to remove the pump, for fear of bending the float. The float can be easily removed, there is a clamp there, we snap it off and slide it out of the groove.
5. We drained the gasoline from the sump. I shined a flashlight into the tank, there are no rags and it seems clean.
6. Arriving home, we began to disassemble it. Having removed the sump, we saw dirt and sand. Accordingly, the coarse mesh was no longer suitable.
7. I ran to the store for spare parts. I came, and right before I arrived the man took 2 flasks at once. Well, I ordered a flask, bought a coarse filter and went to install it. We changed the filter, installed everything, the car became easier to drive in the heat, but the light brake remained.
8. After 2 days the flask arrived. Both a flask and a coarse filter are ordered. They come included.
9. They started removing the pump again, but the car had not been parked overnight. And yes, about 150-200 ml actually spilled out of the line. gasoline.
10. I came home with my father and started taking it apart again. The sump was removed and there was a bit of dirt again. The mesh is still clean after 2 days. The original flask and the Chinese flask are one to one.
11. I read how the pump is disassembled, but it’s one thing to read and another to disassemble it yourself. The fuel pump itself is simply carefully pulled out of the flask, with a slight force; a plug with a black and red wire is inserted into it; whoever removes it, do not pull it sharply!
12. After removing the pump, you need to unclip the 2 hooks that hold the rest of the structure. Well, you also need to remove the fuel sensor itself, it is on a latch, after it is released, it simply slides forward.
Comparison of cones
13. The tube that was put on was simply cut off. I didn’t really want to boil the hose in water, so I borrowed a hairdryer from a neighbor. We started heating the pipe. We set it to 200 degrees. I will say one thing: the material is specific. You warm it up and the tip begins to curl. Well, no problem, we handed it out a little with a pencil and started putting it back in place. We screwed it up a little, and when we installed the pump, it was me or it, or something else, but the sound seemed to be sucking air somewhere. Although this may be how the pump works now, the filter is clean. Although, if there was an air leak, it would affect the car.
14. We assemble the structure and do everything in reverse order. But when we put the pump back in, we try not to press those same 2 wires. While pushing the pump, we slowly pull these 2 wires out, because there is no room for them there, and that’s it, the pump is assembled.
15. We put it in the car. Since we bent the new tube slightly wrong, the tube prevented us from installing the pump properly, the tube rested against the wall of the gas tank, with grief in half, but we installed it. I started it up 2 times, but all the gasoline poured out. Let's go, make a couple of sharp turns to make sure that gasoline doesn't splash out of the neck, you never know... What can I say, it started working a little louder, but that's how I looked at it, everyone notices it.
When the seats were installed, it was almost inaudible, but I will still glue it with noise, or rather with another layer. It's 23.20, we just installed it and went to test it. By 3 times it started to pull as before, and in general the acceleration became much better. Let's travel and see what happens next. In a couple of days, I want to cut open the old cleaning filter and see what's inside it.

Instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a Ford Focus 1
1. Using special pliers, remove the fuse (No. 12) from the fuse box, which is responsible for the operation of the fuel pump.
2. After removing the fuse, start the engine and let it run until it stops on its own. After this, crank the starter again to make sure that the remaining gasoline in the fuel line is consumed.
3. Now you must go down into the pit or, if you have a lift, raise the car. As mentioned above, the fuel filter is located in the gas tank area, on the right side of the rear of the car, you won’t have much difficulty finding it.
4. Now disconnect the connectors on the filter. Do not touch only the thick green connector, which is responsible for the return flow of gasoline into the tank. The connections are quick-release, so they can be easily disconnected by bringing the hooks together and pushing the stopper to the side. It’s easier to press out the stoppers one at a time, and to simplify the process, initially clean the connectors of oil deposits and dirt.
5. Before disconnecting the gas tank pipes, be sure to place a container under the filter so that it can drain there.
6. Now take an “8” socket or a wrench and use it to unscrew the gas filter mounting bolt.
7. Remove the cleaning filter together with the holder.
8. Next, you should remove the old filter and install a new one in its place. To do this, you need to loosen the self-tapping screw with a socket wrench set to “7”.
9. Be careful when replacing the filter. The new cleaning element should be installed in accordance with the direction of the arrow on the filter housing. The arrow indicates the direction of fuel movement. Keep in mind that the folded edges should be facing outwards.
10. Reinstall the filter holder and connect the fuel hoses. The successful installation of the fuel pipes is indicated by a characteristic click.
11. Now you can replace the fuse and start the engine to check its operation. During this, at the same time check the mounting points and the filter itself for fuel leaks. If any, tighten the clamps and fastenings.
How often to change the filter on a FF2 car?
Gasoline cars of the FF2 model have 2 types of trainers:
- Thin / FTO.
- Coarse/mesh.
Both elements are located inside the tank, next to the fuel pump and level sensor. The manufacturer recommends changing them every 120 thousand kilometers. If the Focus 2 has an external filter (depending on the modification of the car), the regulations require replacement at 60 thousand kilometers.
It is obvious that no one in Russia takes the regulatory deadline for replacing these elements seriously. In fact, their resource comes out much earlier. Especially if you poured low-quality gasoline with many impurities or the car had a high mileage. You can determine the wear of the cleaners much more accurately by measuring the pressure. It should not be less than 3.65 kgf/cm2.
The reason for the decrease in pressure may also be a malfunction of the regulator, located in the same module with filters or a pulsation compensator (located in the fuel rail).
On diesel FF2s, the trainer is located under the hood, behind the engine valve cover. The cleaning element is paper, the replacement period is once every 25 thousand kilometers.
The 2008 restyling did not affect the location of the filters; they are in the same places on the sports versions of the RS and RS500.
Replacing the fuel filter in Ford Focus 2 and 3
In Ford Focus 2 and 3 gasoline modifications, the fuel filter is installed in the fuel pump module, which is located in the tank. Replacing the cleaning element yourself is not as easy as it might seem at first glance, since the fuel pump cannot be disassembled. The filter (mesh) in the pump is installed by the manufacturer for the entire life of the vehicle, which in Russian conditions is fraught with bad consequences for the fuel system and engine of the vehicle.
Therefore, replacing the fuel filter also entails changing the fuel pump. In addition, the fuel pump can only be replaced by removing the fuel tank, since the Ford Focus 2 does not have a hatch at the base of the body above the fuel module, therefore access is not possible with the tank installed.
How to change the fuel filter: instructions
Let's first consider how to replace the element on gasoline Focus 2. If the thin filter is remote and located outside the tank, it is very easy to change it. It is enough to replace it in the engine compartment. If it is near the tank, you need to crawl under the car, which has been previously jacked up. You need to do this:
- remove the pump fuse, shutting off the fuel supply;
- turn on the engine - idling it until it stops spontaneously will allow you to relieve pressure;
- Unscrew the filter fastening to the body (clamp);
- pull out both fuel hoses by pressing the corresponding clips;
- remove the old element;
- install a new cleaner.
To replace the mesh and submersible fine filter, you will have to work hard. The manufacturer did not provide a special hatch, as on other cars. The factory method of removing the fuel module is complicated - you need to dismantle the tank. It is much easier to do this - find the wires going to the pump and cut the metal at this point. All that remains is to bend the sheet of iron, unscrew the fastening nut and pull the module out. The mesh can be replaced or immersed for 30 minutes to be cleaned in a solvent. At the final stage, be sure to blow out the mesh with compressed air.
Instructions for replacing the fuel filter Ford Focus 2, 3
- We remove the back seat of the car to get to the fuel pump.
Note: Replacement of the mesh should be carried out with the level light on. This will simplify the procedure for dismantling the tank and installing it in place.
- We take out the fuel pump block
- We unscrew several bolts that hold the cover in place.
- On the inside of the cover, you will see a mesh, which, in fact, is a filter for this car.
- We remove the coked old mesh and install a new one, having previously twisted it. Before installing a new mesh, expand the place where this mesh fits onto the fuel pump hose by literally 0.5 mm. The photo uses a mesh from Toyota, due to the scarcity of the original Ford Focus mesh.
- We put all the dismantled elements of the car in place. To make it easier to install the fuel tank, use a rolling jack or a telescopic stand on wheels.
There are a couple more ways to replace the fuel filter on Ford Focus 2 and 3. Some car owners install an auxiliary element for purifying gasoline. But this method can be extremely risky for the fuel system, since the additional part will create another obstacle to the movement of gasoline, which, in turn, will create a greater load on the gas pump. Other Ford enthusiasts buy old fuel filters at car dismantling yards (or gas pumps, where old filters are removed) and install them on their cars. This operation threatens to damage the entire fuel system.
Replacement methods
Therefore, there are only two options left:
- Replace the entire unit at an authorized dealer.
- Disassemble and clean the unit yourself.
Which path to choose is something everyone must decide for themselves. Of course, the first option will be expensive. Here you need to take into account both the cost of the work itself and the cost of filters (code B33063PR). But the fuel pump may also need to be replaced.
Disassembling a non-collapsible block
Let's figure it out little by little. But the manufacturer says that it is not collapsible!
The second option will be cheaper. Despite the fact that the manufacturer made the unit non-separable, domestic craftsmen found a way to disassemble it and change the mesh on the filters. No one will use this method at official stations, but the fact remains a fact. There is an opportunity.
We climb to the fuel filter.
If you also have experience or certain skills, then you can do this work yourself.
Instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a Ford Focus 2 diesel modification
- The fuel filter on this car model is located in the engine compartment, to the right of the engine. It is closed by a lid, which is secured with bolts at “8”. Unscrew them and remove the cover.
- Now you can see the cleaning element itself, on which rests a screw-off fitting responsible for draining the contaminated liquid.
- In order for fuel to drain through the lower fitting, you need to slightly unscrew this bolt on top of the filter. First, unscrew it a little, only then will we unscrew the lower fitting.
- Place a container for draining diesel.
- Next, remove the fuel filter cover, behind which you will see the filter element itself. Wipe it with a cloth and disconnect it from the body.
- After this, take the new filter and place it in the existing module. Then pour diesel into it and wait until it fills the entire filter cavity.
- Next, you need to assemble all the parts in reverse order, not forgetting the fittings.
- At the last stage, start the engine and press the gas pedal (2 thousand rpm). The engine must be run for one minute to allow all air to escape from the fuel system.
The process of removing the fuel pump
Using gentle pressure, release the fuel line and remove the electrical power connector.
We indicate the location of the fuel pump.
Using a grinder, we cut out an almost complete circle in a metal sheet.
We bend the resulting cover and gain access to the fuel pump, now it can be removed.
The fuel pump is held on the tank with a threaded cap. We rest a wooden stick against the stiffening rib of the lid and, tapping with a hammer, begin to rotate the lid counterclockwise.
When rotation becomes easy, unscrew the cap by hand and carefully remove the fuel pump.
On a free, flat surface (table, cart), having previously shaken out the remaining gasoline, we disassemble the fuel pump: Remove the cover from the latches and access to the filter opens.
You can see how dirty the filter is. We replace the filter with a new one and put everything back together. If there is no new filter, then we do it differently.
Carefully remove the filter and place it in the solvent for about twenty minutes, after which we vigorously shake it out or even knock it out, ensuring that all contaminants are completely removed. If the result is not satisfactory, repeat the procedure.
