Surely every second driver has thought about improving the performance of his car’s engine. Some install turbochargers, others drill the crankshaft. There are quite a lot of tuning methods at the moment. The installation of a sports camshaft on the cylinder head is no exception. However, this event is most often accompanied by the installation of another equally important part - a split camshaft gear. Today you will learn what it is, what it is used for and how to properly install and adjust it.
Reasons for installation
The question of why a split gear is needed can be answered this way: there are 2 main reasons for installing this part:
- When assembling various units on a conveyor (including the engine), certain deviations from the standard are allowed. For example, the valve timing on two identical cars that came off the assembly line one after the other may differ by ±10° along the crankshaft, that is, by one gear tooth. This discrepancy significantly affects the engine power performance. But this discrepancy can be leveled out by fine tuning, which is carried out using the same split part.
- If you decide to install a sports camshaft, you should squeeze the maximum out of it during operation. The split one will help with this, adding up to 5% to the available power by adjusting the gas distribution phases.
Conclusion
As you can see, a split gear will be a very useful modification to your engine, able to tune the engine to your driving style. Such a part costs about 800 rubles, which is not such an exorbitant amount (for 16kL engines, respectively, 1600 rubles).
