Replacing the side mount of a VAZ 2109 engine: you need to do it right

Replacing engine mounts on a VAZ 2109 is necessary when extraneous noise and vibrations appear. With their help, the engine noise is reduced, since the amount of vibration transmitted to the body is reduced several times. Repairing an old nine at a service center is too expensive. And the design of the machine is so simple that it allows you to carry out minor repairs and maintenance yourself, without resorting to the services of expensive craftsmen.

Structurally, the supports are made by vulcanizing rubber based on natural rubber to a steel metal frame. Structurally, the front cushion is installed with a bracket to the cylinder block, and its rounded part is attached to the lugs on the reinforcement of the front panel of the engine compartment.

Finally, the third rubber cushion - the rear one - with a metal handle that serves as a support for the gearbox (gearbox). As a result, the engine of your cars “hangs”, that is, it rests on these three suspensions shown here in the photo: the front “bald”, the side “palm”, and the rear “gearbox” with a metal handle.

Regardless of the equipment of the engine, be it injection or carburetor, all the engine mounts for the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, 2113, 2114, 2115 are absolutely identical. The engine vibration that appears during rupture or vulcanization of any of the rubber cushions. Particularly annoying to most car owners is the rattling of the gearbox knob.

Vibration in the engine can also appear in the case when the rubber of the support becomes hard “oak” and loses its shock-absorbing properties. As practice shows, the rubber cushions of the supports do not fail individually and their mileage is basically the same on average, which suggests that it is most profitable, although more expensive, to replace all the cushions in the set at once. This will increase their overall resource, saving the owner’s car from another headache when an unreplaced rubber cushion fails on the road.

We continue the topic of installing a sixteen-valve engine in the body of Samara! If in the first part we talked about the desired modification of the body, in the second we touched on the topic of the exhaust system, then in this BZ I want to talk about the engine mounts.

Everyone knows that in Samara, 3 airbags are installed from the manufacturer’s plant: the front one is mounted on the car’s TV, the side one holds the gearbox and is located approximately under the battery, and the third one is the rear one, located in the area of ​​the stabilizer. In principle, they are quite enough for active driving, but if the engine is much livelier than stock and often “drives”, then the airbags often break off, especially for the side one, which holds the gearbox. And the whole reason is that when the engine was designed, they didn’t think that it would have about 100 horses, and the supports could cope quite well with the original 75 horses!

As can be seen from the diagram, the front and rear cushions prevent longitudinal movement of the motor, but there is no cushion on the right side member, and therefore the motor bends freely in the transverse vector. That's why many people tear up the transmission cushion! For comparison, here is a diagram of the location of the VAZ 2112 pillows

It can be seen that the plant took a more sober approach to the location of the supports, and lateral displacement of the engine under load has already been eliminated.

Many of you will say that why fence the collective farm, because you can put a support on top of the cylinder head and a glass and that will be enough! But here you will be wrong! The upper support does not play the role of an engine MOUNT, it just rests against the engine during acceleration and that’s all. Others may offer another option: install reinforced or, as they call it, “sports pillows” on a rigid silent block! Here is an example of how Zheka Bliznukov did it

That’s why it was decided to make an additional support for the right spar, and stay on the original cushions! In this design, we remain on the original supports without unnecessary vibrations on the body and limit the movement of the engine in all directions as much as possible. In general, we get 5 supports, of which 4 cushions from below support the engine and gearbox, and the 5th one is mounted on a spacer and serves as a limiter.

To begin with, I decided to look at how other Drayvovites do it, I found 2 examples. In one, Artyr-nn made a support based on the side cushion of a VAZ 2110 gearbox, and the second example, where DonBoZineo made a support based on a cushion from a Niva transfer case. I decided to repeat the second sample.

There is no point in describing the manufacturing process in detail; thanks to the photo, everything is already clear! I’ll just note that the original alternator belt will be a little short, you’ll have to buy from 2110 or 6pk740-750.

Now the engine is securely fastened in the engine compartment, and you can be sure that during active driving the airbags will not be shocked! Thanks for reading, all the best!
