A simple budget hatchback that is well suited for driving on city streets. Nine gained enormous popularity among ordinary people and even bandits. She was popularly nicknamed "Chisel".

In honor of the 70th anniversary of the October Revolution, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant introduced and put into production the VAZ 2109, which was designed mainly for housewives with children to easily move around the city. For almost 13 years of its existence, the car remained almost unchanged in appearance, only in 1990 the front part of the car was slightly changed. From the same year, various configurations began to be produced, such as VAZ 21093-20 (Standard), VAZ 21093-21 ​​(Norma), VAZ 21093-22 (Lux), which differed only in the presence of electric windows, a sunroof and some other little things. There was an option for supplying VAZ 21093 - 22 Lada Samara Baltic to other European countries.

The five-door hatchback is part of the Lada Samara/Sputnik family, which includes 3 AvtoVAZ models: VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099, VAZ 2108.

The Nine has a small in volume, but quite playful engine, and the car is also front-wheel drive, which adds great comfort for movement. The car was equipped with a manual transmission in two versions: 4-speed and 5-speed.

In terms of engine, the VAZ 21099 has several modifications.

In 1987, the first nine came off the assembly line with an engine capacity of 1.3 liters, which produced 65 horsepower. Specialist. Organizations and the police needed a fast car, so the Volga Automobile Plant produced the 2109-20 with a rotary engine (145 horsepower), which allowed the car to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. VAZ 21091, on the contrary, had a 1.1 liter vegetable engine. Since 1990, a more powerful VAZ 21093 model with a one and a half liter carburetor engine was also released. The VAZ 21093i received the same engine, but it was already an injection-type engine. The engineers of the Volga Automobile Plant, having worked on injection, borrowing the system from the VAZ 2111, produce an even more spirited 1.5-liter engine, but with a power of 75 horsepower. This motor received the VAZ 21093-20.

It has an independent suspension at the front, like Mac Pherson. The rear suspension was semi-independent with a transverse beam; this type of suspension was installed on many front-wheel drive cars of that time.

Especially for the new series of cars, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant abandoned the Zhigulevsky exterior, creating a completely new interior. The car is arranged so that the driver can easily and comfortably reach everything. The model has 3 types of panels: high, low and euro. In the luxury configuration, the car was equipped with electric windows. It is worth noting that the seats have now become more comfortable, which contributes to a more comfortable ride. The rear sofa is small, as it was intended for children, but in the dashing 90s, 2-3 large guys could fit there.

This is an ideal car for a novice driver and work. The car is characterized by high maintainability, inexpensive parts and wide scope for tuning the interior, engine, and appearance.

Price and options

The “nine” did not have a special level of comfort, so there is simply nothing to describe to a greater extent. Even then, it was in many ways superior to foreign cars. But the domestic hatchback was distinguished by its maintainability and the presence of the necessary parts.

The steering wheel did not have a hydraulic booster, so you had to physically work hard. There was a standard heater, a simple steering wheel and standard seats with seat belts installed.

It was possible to adjust the external mirrors from the interior using a mechanical lever. Today, the VAZ 2109 can only be purchased on the secondary market. Usually the price tag for this car is low, so you can buy a car on the go from 60,000 rubles.

Tuning

Tuning the VAZ 2109 engine is quite simple and without any particular difficulties. So, the first thing motorists do to their engine is change the ignition system. Of course, on older models there is a contact version installed, which has long been obsolete, and therefore contactless is installed.

At the same time, spark plugs and high-voltage wires are changed. Don't forget about the ignition coil either. All this will give improved fuel combustion in the cylinders only if everything is configured correctly.

Next comes boring and reassembly of the cylinder block. So, many car enthusiasts install a sports piston version, which provides a lightweight crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods. Then, the guide bushings and valves are changed. All these modifications will give an increase in power by about 25-30 horses.

The last stage is external tuning. This may include: installing a zero-resistance air filter, overhauling the carburetor, replacing water cooling pipes, installing an improved pump and generator.

Do not forget about such an important element as the starter, a range of varieties that can be found in tuning stores. It is also recommended to replace the radiator with a lighter one, that is, install an aluminum one. All this will give more opportunities for the engine, and accordingly for the motorist.

Major body repair

Major body repairs involve complete disassembly of the car. It is necessary to remove everything from the car, from the power plant to the interior trim, and drill out the resistance welding areas. This will allow you to detect hidden defects and carry out repair work most efficiently and less expensively.

When disassembling, take the “VAZ 21099 Operating Manual” as a basis. Damage can be varied, but the most common complaints are:

• the bottom, especially the left side, the driver’s seat, is often subject to particularly intense corrosion in Togliatti-assembled cars;
• trunk niches;
• rear side members;
• thresholds and threshold amplifiers;
• wheel arches (due to the design features, pay close attention to the rear ones).

If the rust is deep, there are cracks in the structure, and parts are subject to corrosion, including through corrosion, and deep deformation, then a major body repair will not be possible without welding work. It is necessary to weld problem areas. In most cases, parts need to be replaced. To do this, you can use a grinder to cut off areas and structural elements that are susceptible to through corrosion. In some cases, you have to buy a new bottom or limit yourself to a trough without a tunnel, it’s cheaper.

It is advisable to restore the geometry of the body after complete disassembly of the VAZ 21099, but in the conditions of an ordinary garage, it is impossible to do this with your own hands without special equipment.

After completing the dismantling and welding work, critical areas must be thoroughly treated with an anti-corrosion compound and painting can begin.
