Frequently asked question: What does the abbreviation VAZ stand for?

We all know that the Soviet Union had a developed automotive industry that produced many types of automobiles under different brands. Nowadays you rarely see these USSR products anywhere. Therefore, modern youth do not know, for example, the difference between VAZ 21011 and GAZ 3102 and how they are deciphered. In fact, there were quite a lot of factories producing cars under different brands. Therefore, in this article we will not limit ourselves to answering the question of how VAZ and GAZ stand for. Let's tell a brief history of each of them.

How does GAZ stand for?

You probably noticed that the last two letters of VAZ stand for automobile plant, and the first letter is associated with the area. This decoding formula is applicable to almost all Soviet car brands. GAZ – Gorky Automobile Plant, founded in 1932 in the city of Gorky, now Nizhny Novgorod. Basic technologies were purchased in the USA from the FORD automaker, but subsequently Soviet designers armed themselves with their own technologies, displacing foreign ones. The plant produced not only passenger cars, but also freight vehicles and even buses.

Purchase of AtoVAZ shares by the Renault-Nissan alliance

In June 2014, the Renault-Nissan alliance increased its share in AvtoVAZ shares to more than 2/3. And the next year a rebranding took place, which also included the Lada Priora logos. The new (developed by chief designer Steve Mattin) and so far the latest emblem has already appeared on all Lada cars produced since then - Lada Kalina, Lada Granta, Lada Priora, Lada Vesta, Lada Xray ", "Lada Largus" and "Lada 4x4".

The logo became larger, convex and voluminous (wits called it 3D with sails), the blue color was removed and one full oval remained. Expert opinions, as always, are divided. Many people praise the new logo, while others also blaspheme it indiscriminately. Let's give a neutral opinion about the oval. In car emblems, the oval occupies a share of about 1/3 (this oval is closest to Ford’s) and if the restyling should convince the buyer that the Lada is the most automobile car, then the goal has been achieved.

Military equipment

During the Second World War, the Gorky plant completely stopped producing civilian cars and began supplying military equipment to the front. At that time the company developed:

  • the GAZ-64 SUV, on the basis of which the famous UAZ-469 was later created;
  • artillery tractor GAZ-67B;
  • armored car BA-64;
  • self-propelled gun SU-76.

Also, specialists from the Gorky Automobile Plant took an active part in the development of the legendary T-60 and T-70 tanks.

And now she must take into her hands the queen of all vases in the world - the Kuma vase

, and ancient Greek amphorae, and much more.

Snatching a Ming Dynasty Chinese vase from the mantelpiece—one of Mel's favorite vases, a very expensive and rare antique—she tossed it toward the bed of love.

Vases with ferns are placed on high shelves; several more vases perched on the windowsill near the door.

Some kind of faded animation emanates from the background - from the vase with flowers and the velvet curtains falling in folds - such

Wow, no one will keep such curtains now.

We need everything at home to be soft, to have many round, deep places where we can dive, like into a hole, and for the vases to shine on the windows, because when there is a snowstorm outside the window, the sparkling snow will wonderfully kiss the edges of our vases .

The ram had peculiar habits: every morning he came into the living room, took flowers out of all the vases with his teeth and did not eat them, but put them on the table next to the vase and then lay down in an armchair, from where he was mostly kicked out; that is, at one time they always kicked out, but with more or less indignation.

I couldn’t hold out longer than a month as a saleswoman (I broke the freezer), or as a warehouse worker (I collapsed a rack of vases... there were a ton of vases there), or as an actress, which I studied for six years (I don’t want to remember, it was terrible).

Even older than these literary indications are images of Maltese Spitz dogs on vases - for example, on the Volzent vases of Athens, dating back to approximately 500.

First, Nancy and Susan must prepare forty large vases of freshly cut flowers; secondly, several large lush garlands to decorate the central entrance and interior spaces; thirdly, many small vases with bouquets for dining tables.

"Volga"

These cars, produced by the Gorky plant since 1959, have long been the most prestigious brand among Soviet citizens. Volgas were more expensive than the then popular Zhiguli, Muscovites and Zaporozhets. But the performance characteristics were also more impressive. Initially, these cars were labeled as GAZ-21. Later, improved GAZ-24 went on sale.

Simultaneously with the Volga, the enterprise was engaged in the production of Chaika cars. These cars were considered even more prestigious than the GAZ-21 and -24. But they went on sale in a very limited edition - just over 3,000 copies.

After some time, the plant began producing model 31029. Then, for 17 years, the enterprises produced the Volga GAZ-3110, which gained enormous popularity. In appearance, it was practically no different from the models of the 70s. The only thing is that the designers chose a more rounded roof shape for it.

In the 80s, the plant created a new Volga - GAZ-3105, equipped with a very powerful engine. However, due to economic problems, the company subsequently produced only about 60 copies of such cars.

At the same time, the plant developed projects for inexpensive sedans GAZ-3103 and 3104. However, such cars were never put into production.

How does ZIL stand for?

The ZIL plant was founded in 1916 in Moscow, stands for Likhachev Plant. It went through a difficult path before becoming one of the largest in the USSR. A year after its founding, the revolution thundered, and it was taken into state ownership. For several years, the plant repaired cargo vehicles and also carried out tasks for the tank industry. During the leadership of the country by Stalin, the plant was renamed in honor of Stalin, and the products were produced under the ZIS brand. Production has expanded most widely since 1957 after a radical reconstruction.

Now you know not only how VAZ and GAZ stand for, but also a little about the history of the Soviet automobile industry. Below you will find a complete list of all factories in the USSR, and there are as many as 20 of them, and this is not counting factories for the production of motorcycles, trolleybuses, trams, and tractors!

Preface

In Soviet times, they did not bother with the particular complexity of depicting trademarks, although the story of the UAZ Swallow, which led to claims from Opel, is indicative in itself (the emblem had to be replaced). Pardon the tautology, the scary-looking “VID” logo, resembling either the first president of Russia or an old witch with a toad on her head, was invented by the wife of Vlad Listyev, a well-known TV presenter and journalist in the nineties of the last century. In fact, the mask of the famous eastern philosopher from Ancient China, Hou Xiang, was taken as a basis. The logo of the upcoming world football champion in Russia visually repeats the award for winning it - the cup. And the three main emblems should evoke associations with love for: football, space exploration and, through iconography, God.

The topic of this article is the logos of the Lada car. The history of their creation, interesting and related facts about them. These logos are from that series of world brands that everyone speaks to themselves, once you see them or reproduce their image using an associative connection.

Is it true that the Zhiguli is an Italian car? How is this word translated?

No, Zhiguli is a beer, but the car, which was Italian and which the Soviet auto industry turned into, was called FIAT 124.
It seems Zhiguli is the name of a river in the Tolyati region.

The VAZ plant in Togliatti was built by the Italians in 1969 and their first creation was the VAZ-2101 kopek, which was also built by the Italians. By the way, it is copied from one of the Fiat models of that time. As for the name Zhiguli, I’m not sure that it is Italian; in the Togliatti region there are Zhiguli mountains. Do you think they were also named by Italians? Cars, from VAZ-2101 to VAZ-2106, are made in the image of FIAT, because... The plant was built by Italians. And Zhiguli is our word, not Italian. The mountains there are like that, in the Samara region - Zhiguli! But the city of Tolyatti is named after the given name (more precisely, the surname) of an Italian. I don't know why he's famous.

Zhiguli is originally a mountain. Then they started calling cars and beer.

The Lada of the first years was an old Fiat 124 (not A). All subsequent ones up to 2107x are its modifications. and 2108 is already a German car, Porsche)))

ZHIGULI, Zhiguli Mountains, a hill on the right bank of the Volga, part of the Volga rise, protruding to the east into the bend of the Samarskaya Luka. Length approx. 75 km, height up to 375 m. Strongly dissected hilly terrain. Broadleaf and pine forests, to the south. forest-steppe slopes. One of the most beautiful places on the Volga, sung in folk songs and legends. Togliatti Palmiro (pseudonym - Ercoli, Alfrede, Mario Correnti, Roderigo, etc.) (26.3.1893, Genoa, - 21.8.1964, Crimea, USSR), leader of the Italian communist and international labor movement.

ZHIGULI is a small hill, one of the most famous anomalous zones in Russia, located in the Samara Luka (a bend of the Volga River in the Togliatti-Kuibyshev region). There have been numerous cases of sightings of UFOs, chronomirages and other anomalous phenomena. Researchers are still keeping watch near the water for the ghostly mirage of the city of Kitezh, which has long since sunk into the water and into legend, appearing here and there. Several times in the same places we saw bright spotlights hitting the sky... straight from the ground. They also talk about frequent encounters with some creatures that don’t even have names... Philologists believe that this place owes its strange name to river robbers. Indeed, it is very convenient to observe slowly sailing ships from the hills inside the bend of the Volga; you can choose the most opportune moment for an attack; it was possible to overtake even the fastest vessel by land. That is why the bend was formerly famous for robberies. Well, the robbers adopted the custom of not killing merchants who tried to resist, but of punishing them, “burning them with brooms,” that is, flogging them with lighted brooms. [Trud-7 1998, October 30]. The sound that the burning brooms made as they descended onto their backs was exactly that: “Jig! Jig! “Hence the name of the area Zhiguli, and from it the later name of the car “Zhiguli”... However, some local ufologists only half agree with the origin of the name - yes, indeed, “Zhiguli” comes from the sound “zhik!” “, but it was not a broom that made this sound, but a larger object. Which? Guess for yourself what could be flying above the ground in the anomalous zone with a similar buzzing sound? . Indeed, the appearance of UFOs in this place is far from uncommon; even maps of the areas of the most frequent appearance of UFOs over Zhiguli have been compiled.

Classification of models and brands of Soviet cars in tables

On our streets you can find many Soviet and post-Soviet cars.
VAZ, AZLK, GAZ, UAZ and a great many others. And our cars, in addition to popular and official names such as “Moskvich”, “Lada”, “Chaika”, also bear the most important ones: designations according to the vehicle classification system. So let's figure out what these 2140, 2101, 21st and 24th Volgas and 3110 are. From 1945 to 1966, the marking was an abbreviation of the letters of the manufacturer and the digital number of the car in a certain range.

Due to the fact that production could periodically be transferred from plant to plant, with a corresponding transfer of numbering (for example, the GAZ-69 produced at UAZ was marked as UAZ-69, which was not included in the operating range of this plant), which led to confusion, in 1966 The industry standard OH 025270-66 was introduced, which regulated the digital designation not in relation to the manufacturing plant, but according to the tactical and technical characteristics of the machine.

  • Advertising of the domestic automobile industry by V.V. Putin

At the start of its sales in 2004, the Lada Kalina logo was slightly optimized - the image became more voluminous, and the outline of the boat changed just a little. The Lada Granta also traveled around the country with the same sign. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin made a great contribution to the promotion and advertising of both the trademark and the AvtoVAZ cars themselves. While holding the rank of Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, in 2010 he drove more than two thousand kilometers in three days in a yellow Lada Kalina, giving it a positive assessment.

And in 2022, already at the rank of President of the Russian Federation, during a conversation with a resident of the city of Bryansk, the owner of such a car, he called the Lada Kalina a good car. She did not perform so well in “communication” with the president of Lada Granta. At first the trunk didn’t want to open, and then it didn’t start for a long time. By the way, when Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin arrived at the meeting of the Valdai Club, he spoke about the Lada Vesta just as well as he did about the Lada Kalina, mentioning its acceleration, ease of control and smooth ride.

Continuing this topic, it is impossible not to mention the fact that the video about the crossover “Lada X Ray” was shot in the genre of trash comedy and a travel film about Putin – “President’s Vacation”, where, according to the plot, he goes to Crimea in this particular brand of car.

2105, 2141, 31029. How to decipher the indices of domestic cars?

    Reviews 04/26/2018

    11

Are the eight digits in the name of the GAZ-31105-551 car a phone number or a price? Some car show visitors used to joke that way. In fact, indices of domestic cars were created according to strict rules, although there were some exceptions.

For the first time, a unified designation system for cars produced by Soviet factories was introduced in 1945. It was quite simple: the name of the car consisted of the abbreviation of the name of the enterprise (GAZ, ZIL, MZMA/AZLK, UAZ, LiAZ, and so on) and the serial number of the model, selected from the range of numbers allocated for each brand.

For example, the Gorky Automobile Plant was assigned numbers 1–99 (GAZ-14, GAZ-66), the Moscow Small Car Plant was given indexes 400-449 (Moskvich-412), ZAZ and LuAZ were given numbers 965-974 (ZAZ-965, LuAZ-967 ). In other words, it was impossible to understand anything other than the place of production by the name of the model.

In 1966, standard OH 025270-66 “Classification and designation system for automotive rolling stock” came into force in the Soviet Union. From now on, the indexes contained much more information.

Nameplate of the car AZLK-2141 “Moskvich”

In the general case, they are four-digit, and it is more logical to start deciphering them from the second digit, which is responsible for the type of vehicle: for example, one means a passenger car, and two means a bus. The first digit indicates the class of the vehicle. For passenger cars it is determined by the engine displacement, for trucks - by the total weight of the vehicle, and for buses - by the length of the body.

Decoding the first character in automobile indexes

NumberPassenger cars: engine displacement, lTrucks: gross weight, tonsBuses: length, m
    1up to 1.2up to 1.2
    21,2–1,81,2–2up to 5.0

    514–2010,5–12,0

    3general purpose truck
    4tractor unit
    5dump truck
    6tank
    7van
    8
    9special car

For example, the first class of “passenger cars” included the Oka VAZ-1111 and Tavria ZAZ-1102, the second class included most VAZs and Moskvich cars. The third class included Volgas, and the fourth class included executive sedans and ZIL limousines.

LiAZ-6213 - bus (second digit 2) more than 18 meters long (first digit 6)

The third and fourth digits in the index indicated the serial number of the model of this manufacturer. The following symbols are optional and are used to indicate modification, option or configuration.

And here there were many digressions. It happened that designations for new models were given according to the old system (this is what GAZ did with its Volga GAZ-24). Sometimes the index was assigned according to the new system, but in violation of the standard. Take, for example, the “Bull” ZIL-5301. Of course, the plant had heavy models in its arsenal, but the compact truck with its maximum permissible weight of 6950 kg did not qualify for the fifth class. Interestingly, the 1992 Bychka prototype sported the correct designation ZIL-3301M. Well, now we probably won’t know where these five came from. Apparently, they installed it out of habit from previous models.

Prototype "Bull" with the "correct" index 3301

A similar story happened at AvtoVAZ with Kalina. There is no doubt that the car turned out to be quite compact in appearance, especially in the hatchback version. Yes, it only went into production at the end of 2004 with the well-known, reliable and unpretentious, but rather large 1.6-liter engine, which made the indexes 1117, 1118 and 1119 untenable. At the beginning, a deuce was requested, which was corrected with the release of the second generation of Kalina, which received indexes 2192 and 2194.

AvtoVAZ has not put digital indexes on Ladas for the Russian market for a long time, but export versions of some models receive old-fashioned four-digit designations. In the photo - the Lada Kalina Cross nameplate for Germany

Now we can observe the decline of the era of that same industry normal: new models from GAZ, AvtoVAZ and other factories are losing their usual designation (for Vesta this happened right during the development process, because it began under the VAZ-2180 symbol). UAZ, as well as truck and bus manufacturers, continue to use the old naming system.

    History of the plant

Until the end of the 20s, cars in the USSR were purchased abroad. In 1929, the government of the country decided to correct this situation. In the spring of this year, a decree was passed on the need to build a modern automobile plant.

The site for the new enterprise was found a month later. It was decided to build a new plant near Nizhny Novgorod, which was called Gorky from 1932 to 1990. The choice of the site next to this settlement was explained by the convenience of the location both in terms of geography and natural resources.

Since there was no experience in building automobile enterprises in the country at that time, it was necessary to invite world-famous engineers to develop the plant project. But, of course, Soviet specialists also took part in the construction of the new automobile enterprise.

    Dashing nineties

In the early nineties of the last century, along with the whole country, AvtoVAZ was experiencing a crisis. The plant could, despite the crisis, actually become “fabulously rich,” since the cost of production was less than half the real price of the car. But the plant didn’t get anything - everything was taken by resellers who swarmed around AvtoVAZ like bugs, sucking out every last ruble. The manufacturer was confidently heading towards bankruptcy.

At the same time, it was also a time of radical change. Of course, they also affected the Lada logo. In the West they borrowed the oval shape. The boat was stylized as the Latin letter S, and the sail as a V (intentionally or not, the result was the famous ancient Roman abbreviation meaning “against”). White arcs emanated from the sail in different directions, forming another, this time, unfinished oval. The background is blue, as is the word LADA in large font.

In terms of its execution and the philosophy of the Western type of thinking, the trademark has turned into a full-fledged logo of the Lada VAZ. We have long seen plastic with a chrome plate in cars of the “tenth” Lada family.
