VAZ 2112 starts and stalls injector 16 valves engine 124

Stalls at idle, why?

Such a problem as: the engine stalling at idle speed can be heard quite often. And even if after some period of time the engine does start, the cause of the malfunction will have to be looked for one way or another. And the sooner the better, because there may be several of them.

The following two tabs change content below.

  • About the expert:

All my life I have been surrounded by cars! First, in the village, already in the first grade, I was rushing around on a tractor through the fields, then there was JAVA, then a penny. Now I am a third-year student at the Polytechnic Faculty of Automotive Engineering. I work part-time as a car mechanic and help repair cars for all my friends.

The video below shows an example when a VAZ-2112 stalls at idle:

Reasons why the engine stalls

In all cases when the engine is unable to maintain idle speed, the malfunction is associated with contamination or failure of any part. The most basic elements to pay attention to:

  1. Clogged or broken idle air regulator.

    IAC on VAZ-2112

  2. Carbon deposits or contamination of the throttle valve and injector channels require cleaning and diagnostics.

    Cleaning the throttle valve from dirt

  3. The presence of significant deposits in the fuel supply system and fuel pump, as well as the grid.
  4. Failure of the mass air flow sensor.
  5. The engine crankcase ventilation system is dirty.

Troubleshooting options

It is clear that if any emergency situations arise with the motor, it is advisable to contact a specialized service. However, this procedure is not always possible. Therefore, it is worth knowing how to independently diagnose the main systems and key parts.

Throttle valve and assembly

When the speed drops at idle and the car stalls, you need to pay close attention to the details of the throttle assembly. Long-term operation of the car on low-quality fuel and untimely maintenance of the air filter can lead to malfunctions of the throttle valve. It periodically jams if debris gets into the equipment.

Throttle valve VAZ 2112

The problem can be solved by cleaning the system. The throttle is cleaned using carburetor cleaners. Using a compressor, you need to blow out the damper under the pressure of compressed air. It is not recommended to touch the screws located inside and on the side. If cleaning does not correct the situation, the device must be replaced. This operation is not particularly difficult.

Crankcase malfunction

There is an oil trap in the crankcase ventilation system of the engine. Its contamination can also lead to interruptions in engine operation. Crankcase gases do not allow the engine to function normally, the speed fluctuates, the internal combustion engine stalls.

Sensors

If a gasoline car stalls at idle, then one of the sensors is likely to break. In injection cars with an electronic engine control system, the engine usually starts normally, but then it stops working. It's worth checking here:

  • Electronic car indicators;
  • DRХХ – device that regulates idle speed;
  • Air flow meter (air intake in the carburetor);
  • Sensor indicating the position of the throttle curtain.

Electronic control unit in VAZ 2114

Interruptions in the operation of any sensors immediately affect the behavior of the electronics - errors appear in the car control unit. The “brains” of the machine receive unreliable information. It is not transmitted correctly to the engine. It starts working with parameters that do not correspond to reality. Self-testing of this device is not possible. You need to contact a professional for service.

Diagnostics of mass air flow sensor

The idle air control device is usually to blame for engine malfunction when the car idles poorly. But you pressed the gas pedal and the engine started. In the latest VAZ modifications, error information appears on the instrument panel.

When diagnosing, you must use a multimeter. If a part is faulty, it is recommended to replace it with a new one. All sensors are reasonably priced. It is better to start checking with parts that have a simpler design. Then gradually move on to complex devices. We must not forget that the problem may lie not only in the sensors themselves. It is also necessary to check the wiring to them and the presence of stable contact.

Carburetor

If the VAZ carburetor stalls at idle speed, then the jets may become clogged. Low-quality gasoline, deposits from the gas tank, contain small particles of debris. They can easily disrupt the operation of the fuel injection system. It is worth replacing the filter in front of the carburetor and cleaning the device itself. The dispensing part is cleaned using a cleaning solvent, which is sold in aerosol cans. Another reason is often a prolonged lack of carburetor adjustment.

In a mechanical fuel pump of carburetor cars, the filter mesh may be clogged with dirt. This reduces the performance of the device. Wear of the membrane and its destruction often leads to clogged carburetor channels.

Injector

A situation that often arises is that various Lada models, as well as the VAZ 2110 injector stalls at idle. It is necessary to check the fuel pump strainer for clogging. This is a common problem with injection machines. It is better to immediately replace the part with a working one.

Filter problem

If the VAZ 2112 stalls at idle, then the fuel filter may be dirty. This also applies to other models of the concern. Generally, it is not practical to clean it. The part must be replaced. The same should be done with a dirty air filter. Low throughput leads to the fact that the air-fuel mixture simply floods the spark plugs.

Self-checking will not always lead to a positive result. It is often more practical to identify the cause of unstable operation of the internal combustion engine at a car service center. It will cost more, but specialized diagnostics will prevent more serious damage to the car.

Problems on the go

Now it’s time to deal with the problems that arise on the road. It happens that the engine stalls while driving. In this case, it is best to call a tow truck or enlist the help of other drivers to deliver the car to a garage or the nearest service station.

If you have some skills in handling cars, then you can check several suspected problem components and parts yourself:

  1. Spark plugs - they are almost always checked. If they are not working, replace them with new ones.
  2. A dirty fuel filter blocks the flow of fluid, resulting in a lack of fuel causing the engine to stop working. Check the filter, clean or replace it.
  3. The air filter may also become clogged. If this is the problem, you will notice not only unstable operation of the engine unit, but also a significant decrease in engine power, which occurs due to the fact that there is not enough air to create a high-quality combustible mixture.
  4. Serious problems can arise if the fuel pump is faulty. Insufficient pressure appears in the system, and the car begins to stall due to poor fuel flow into the combustion chamber. Check, repair or replace the part.
  5. The battery is another element that is very rarely checked after the engine is stopped. The operation of electronic devices rests on it; as soon as it is discharged, the machine will stop. The contacts of the device may also be oxidized, but they can be easily cleaned.
  6. After the battery, it is worth checking the generator. This could be the reason why the battery is discharged. The battery will have to be charged, and the generator will have to be repaired or replaced with a new one.

Causes of malfunction

Floating engine speed shown on the dashboard

It’s not just that the speed in a car starts to fluctuate; this is due to the operation of many systems. Before we begin to consider the reasons, it is worth noting that with such an effect the check may light up or not, but as practice shows, the outcome of the reasons is the same.

Let's consider the main problems of the occurrence of floating speed at idle according to the practice of car enthusiasts and service manuals:

Method for eliminating floating speed on a 16-valve VAZ-2112

Before we move on to eliminating the causes, it is worth noting that untimely repairs can lead to the engine reaching the “start-stop” effect. This means that the engine will start and immediately stall at idle . Therefore, at the slightest occurrence of floating speed, it is worth eliminating the problem. So, let's move on to the actual repair.

Fuel system and everything connected with it

The effect of floating idle speed can occur due to intermittent injection. On older carburetor cars this happens quite often, especially during and after winter. So, to eliminate the causes on the VAZ-2112, it is necessary to perform the following operations:

  • Check the operation of the gasoline pump , repair or replace if necessary.
  • Replace the fuel filter, which may be clogged due to poor quality fuel.
  • Check and clean injection nozzles. If necessary, replace faulty injectors.
  • Check the fuel rail for leaks .
  • Carry out diagnostics of injector wiring .

If the cause is found, then you should check whether the effect of floating speed has disappeared; if not, then examine the remaining systems.

Ignition

The car's ignition plays a very important role in setting the speed. It is worth noting that a malfunction of spark plugs (incorrectly selected gap), high-voltage wires or lock can affect the achievement of this effect. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose these particular components and parts, and, if necessary, replace them.

Why does the car start and immediately stall?

Question from a reader: “Good afternoon Sergey. I have this problem - the car starts and immediately stalls! Moreover, this began to manifest itself precisely in the cold, at - 12, - 15 degrees. As soon as the thaw sets in, it was + 1, + 3 outside, the car starts and runs normally! Sergey, please tell me what could be the problem? I've already racked my brains, checked both the spark plugs and the air filter, everything is fine, but when it's cold, the same problem is happening again? At least which way to look? My car is a VAZ 2110. Thank you, your mother-in-law Sergey"

Your question is clear, I had such practice, read on...

Why does a car start and immediately stall - in cold weather?

So, let’s turn on the logic and think about why the car stalls immediately after starting. I think there can be only three reasons:

1) There is not enough fuel supplied.

2) The exhaust system does not work normally.

3) And the mixture system - supplying the fuel mixture - does not work correctly.

I immediately discard the spark plugs and air filter because:

— If the spark plug didn’t work, the engine would throttle “strongly,” but it would work.

— If the filter were clogged (hard clogged - they didn’t change it for 30 - 40,000 kilometers), then the engine might not start at all, or the traction would be lost, and it would be lost greatly! The car wouldn't move at all! But it is still very difficult to bring the air filter to this state.

Therefore, we understand further and in more detail.

IN my practice, it was...

Common causes of floating revolutions

So, we figured out the main symptoms. Now let's move on to the reasons. Let us immediately note that floating idle speed is often a problem with injection engines. The fact is that a complex ECM system is responsible for idling in this case.

This system assumes the presence of a controller, sensors and actuators. The control unit receives signals from sensors and transmits commands to actuators (for example, IAC), maintaining stable engine speeds at idle and other modes, regardless of the load on the internal combustion engine.

However, any failures that are associated with the supply of air, fuel, a violation of the composition of the working fuel-air mixture or its ignition, as well as various mechanical breakdowns will lead to floating speed.

It turns out that you should start checking with the throttle assembly, sensors and actuators. The ignition system, idle air regulator, mass air flow sensor also need diagnostics; it is necessary to assess the condition of the fuel and air filters, injection nozzles, etc.

  • As a rule, in practice, the idle air regulator causes a lot of problems for drivers. In fact, this is a stepper motor that has a conical locking needle. When the throttle valve is closed, air bypasses the valve through a channel that is closed by the needle.

If malfunctions occur in the operation of the device, the ECU is not able to correctly “select” the mixture composition at idle, as a result, the speed floats.

  • The mass air flow sensor also deserves special attention. During operation, the air flow sensor may become dirty or break down.

One way or another, the ECU does not receive correct data on air flow, which leads to disruption of mixture formation and jumps in engine speed.

  • Often, a floating engine speed can be associated with severe contamination of the throttle valve itself or mechanical breakdowns of the throttle, damage, or deformation. The damper may jam and not close completely.

To prevent such complications, it is necessary to periodically clean the throttle from dirt, and on many cars, additional training of the throttle is required after cleaning.

  • During diagnostics, you should also check the crankcase ventilation valves. Normally, crankcase gases are redirected to the intake, where they are mixed with air and fuel, after which they are burned in the cylinders.

On engines with mileage, a lot of crankcase gases accumulate due to natural wear and tear of the CPG. An excessive amount of such gases leads to a violation of the composition of the mixture if the crankcase ventilation valve jams. This is also a common reason why engine speed fluctuates.

  • By the way, if you touch on carburetor engines, the speed on the carburetor floats, usually due to the settings and adjustments of this device being messed up. Also, one should not exclude the possibility of a breakdown of the carburetor solenoid valve or clogging of the idle jet.

Let’s also add that if the speed of a diesel engine fluctuates, this is often caused by rust on the fuel injection pump blades. Corrosion occurs due to the presence of water in diesel fuel.

So what happens to the car?

Often everything happens according to a standard scenario: you get behind the wheel, turn the ignition key, and the engine starts working as usual. However, as soon as you take your foot off the gas pedal, the engine speed immediately begins to drop. It should be noted that in this situation, the idle speed sensor still produces the nominal number of turns. Under all these circumstances, the idle speed jumps, creating distorted operation of the car as a whole. Due to detonation of the propulsion system, which occurs against the background of idle speed surges, the most unpleasant, but quite natural thing happens - the engine stops working and the car stops.

Clogged throttle valve

Usually the situation returns to normal after another attempt to start the engine and set the car in motion - everything falls into place, and you can safely follow the intended path. However, such an incident can be considered the first bell, since in the future such an emergency situation will again take you by surprise. Therefore, at the first manifestations of such a problem, you should immediately address them. Before you begin to troubleshoot problems, it is worth finding out the true cause of their occurrence.

IAC cleaning

It is recommended to wash and clean any non-working idle speed sensor on the VAZ 2110 to make sure it is faulty. The process is very simple and will not take much time. To do the job you need: carburetor cleaner, WD-40. The following actions are performed:

  • The block is removed from the sensor;
  • Apply any of the listed cleaning liquids to a regular cotton swab and carefully treat the contacts;
  • Unscrew the screws securing the idle speed sensor;
  • Remove the IAC from the seat;
  • Inspect the idle speed sensor. If black dirt, oil, or IAC are detected, it is necessary to clean the entire throttle assembly. If not, spray WD-40 or cleaner onto the needle with a spring, thereby cleaning it. Dry the idle speed sensor VAZ 2110, 2112;
  • Before reinstalling, measure the distance between the idle speed sensor housing and its needle, which on a working regulator is 23 mm.

When the IAC VAZ of the tenth family did not work normally, the guide needles wore out and the wire inside the housing broke. In these cases, the idle air regulator must be replaced.

On a VAZ 2110, the idle speed sensor is mounted in the reverse order of dismantling.

Signs and solutions to problems

Below we will look at the most common signs when a car stalls at idle.

The car starts and stalls immediately after the starter is turned off.

  1. When a car suddenly stalls at idle, the most common reason is that the throttle valve is dirty, causing it to become clogged and sticky. This problem is solved by simply cleaning it, using a carburetor cleaner from a bottle. This happens due to the use of low-quality fuel and the presence of large contaminants entering through the air filter (for example, oil).

    This is what a dirty damper looks like.

  2. It is also worth paying attention to the presence of contaminants in the oil trap system in the engine crankcase. Because if this filter is dirty, the engine will simply stall from excess crankcase gases.

Checking the MAF sensor readings

The cause of a malfunction with such symptoms is most often the above-mentioned sensors: IAC (idle air control), MAF (mass air flow sensor). Before purchasing new parts, you need to disassemble them and check for contamination. Also check the mass air flow sensor for the main signs of malfunction. However, if you have the opportunity to check the malfunction using diagnostic equipment, then do not deny yourself this. Read more about replacing the IAC here, and about replacing the mass air flow sensor here.

The functionality of all sensors should be checked in order, starting from the least structurally complex to the most.

How to remove IAC

If signs of malfunction characteristic of the IAC are detected, then it will need to be removed (first for inspection). On the VAZ 2110, this sensor, which is small in size (easily fits in the palm of your hand), is located in a seat on the throttle body (can be seen in the photo).

Removing the idle air control

If necessary, its dismantling is quite easy - it is secured with only two screws. In extremely rare cases, it is necessary to remove the entire VAZ 2110 throttle assembly.

Dismantling is carried out in the following sequence:

  • The VAZ 2110 is placed on the handbrake;
  • The negative terminal of the battery is disconnected;
  • The wiring harness connected to the IAC is disconnected;
  • Be sure to clean the connection between the sensor and the throttle body to prevent dirt and rust from getting into the hole;
  • Unscrew the fastening screws holding the idle speed sensor of the VAZ 2110.

What to do if cars with automatic transmission stall?

If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, then the problem should be found in the electrical supply. If you abruptly switch from one gear to another, or while switching gears while braking, the settings may be distorted, and the on-board computer will receive a signal to turn off the engine.

Also, models with automatic transmission may stall due to malfunctions of the hydrodynamic transformers of the gearbox. This problem mainly manifests itself during acceleration and requires urgent intervention from car service specialists.

VAZ 2110 8-valve injector does not start, the starter turns: reasons

The structure of any car is complex. Domestic models are no exception. VAZ cars, like others, may experience unexpected breakdowns. Most often, they lead to the malfunction of all mechanisms, and sometimes to their failure altogether. Some car owners are faced with a problem - the VAZ 2110 8-valve injector does not start, the starter turns. The causes of failure and repair will be discussed below.

Often this problem occurs due to a battery that has become unusable. However, if the battery is fully charged and in good condition, then the breakdown is not related to it.

How to troubleshoot

It is best to contact a service center. This will allow you to quickly identify and fix the problem, but you will have to pay for the services of a specialist. Work that can be carried out at the auto center:

  • complete replacement of equipment that has become unusable;
  • regeneration of failed devices;
  • carrying out preventive procedures and bringing equipment into proper condition

The optimal solution is a complete replacement of non-working equipment. You can also install a new idle speed sensor, throttle valve, throttle position sensor, injector or carburetor

Idle speed sensor VAZ 2110 (IAC): repair and replacement

General concepts

One of the most common troubles that prevents you from fully driving a car is the idle speed sensor of the VAZ 2110 and modifications.
Although this device is called a sensor among drivers, it will still be correctly called the idle speed controller, abbreviated as IAC, because all automobile sensors are measuring equipment, and this product serves to automatically stabilize and maintain idle speed by supplying air to the engine VAZ 2110 with the throttle valve fully closed. IAC is an important component of the engine and plays a significant role in the stable and uninterrupted operation of any VAZ vehicle.

Idle speed control

The VAZ 2110 idle speed sensor (abbreviated DXX) is an actuator, simply a valve consisting of an electric motor, a spring, and a rod on which a shut-off needle is installed (you can see it in the photo). It is through which the volume of air is dosed. That is, when the throttle of a VAZ 2110, 2112 is completely closed, and the controller determines that the idle speed needs to be increased, the IAC generates a command to change the position of the needle. It moves, partially or completely opening the intake port, through which air bypasses the throttle and then mixes with fuel. As a result, the engine does not stall.

Why does the VAZ-2112 stall while driving?

Car : VAZ-2112. Asks : Roman Sitnikov. The essence of the issue : The car stalls while driving. Hello! I have this problem. When I'm driving, the car suddenly stalls, and after a while it can be started again and continue on my way. At the same time, it works great when cold, no comments. But in a traffic jam, when I accelerate and brake, such situations occur, and sometimes the “check” light comes on. Tell me, please, what could be the reason?

Throttle sensor

If the TPS is faulty, then the VAZ car often begins to work unstably. The main signs of a problem include:

  • floating speed at idle;
  • speed reduction;
  • jerky acceleration;
  • sudden engine shutdown.

The sensor in question most often fails for the following reason - abrasion of the coating on the base. This prevents the signal from reaching the controller, which causes the motor to malfunction. Failure of the slider leads to a similar result. Any of these problems can be recognized visually.

Signs of IAC malfunction

Unfortunately, the 2110 VAZ DXX is not equipped with a self-diagnosis system, so the “CHECK ENGINE” light signal will not indicate a malfunction. Loss of performance on the VAZ 2110, 2112 is determined by the following main features:

  1. the engine “stalls”, for no apparent reason, at idle;
  2. idle speed “floats”;
  3. when a “cold” VAZ 2110, 2112 engine is started, there is no increased speed at all;
  4. The engine stalls, namely, after turning off the gear while driving.

The symptoms completely coincide with the failure of the VAZ 2110 TPS, but in the case of this sensor the “CHECK ENGINE” indicator will light up.

What could have broken?

If the machine does not work, it means the motor is broken. This can often be heard from an inexperienced driver. But in a car, in addition to the engine, there are many different elements, on the serviceability of which the operation of the power unit depends. If the car is not completely “dead” and when the starter rotates it shows signs of life, “sneezes” or “shoots” into the exhaust pipe, the fault will be more difficult to find.

The malfunction that led to the engine shutdown is hidden in one of the three systems of the VAZ 2112:

  • electrical equipment and power supply;
  • fuel supply system;
  • gas distribution mechanism and piston group.

You must understand that if the level of coolant or oil in the crankcase is low, the engine will not stall; it may fail due to overheating or lack of lubrication. Therefore, it is important to recall the circumstances preceding engine failure. It’s one thing when the power unit just stopped moving, another thing if before that you heard extraneous knocks or shots in the exhaust. In the first case, the electrical part is probably to blame.

A sign of the second situation is often a broken timing belt, which is easy to detect by removing its upper plastic casing. The belt can be changed on the way if you have a spare one, otherwise you will have to look for a part or a towing company. If the starter cannot crank the engine when trying to start, there may be two reasons:

  • there was a breakdown in the generator circuit, and the voltage source was the battery, which as a result was discharged;
  • the crankshaft jammed due to lack of lubrication.

In both situations, you need to find a way to deliver the car for repairs; you won’t be able to do anything on the road.

Ignition system

Pay attention to the condition of the ignition module (article on module repair here), high-voltage wires and spark plugs. If there are traces of corrosion, melting on their surface, or there are cracks on the body, this will only mean that each of the above elements will require replacement, since they cannot be repaired or corrected. In order to correctly approach the issue of choosing spark plugs for the VAZ-2112, you can read this article.

First we check the wires, and then the spark plugs.

Carburetor problem

And although new cars no longer use carburetors, old ones still drive using these engine fuel systems. These are quite problematic systems that constantly become clogged. Many service stations offer carburetor cleaning services, after which the engines on many cars come to life. However, you can clean the carburetor yourself - there are special aerosol cleaners for this. The difficulty lies only in removing the system, although if you have the tools there should be no problems.
