Thermostat ZMZ 409 which one to install

Good health to all, dear UAZ drivers! Today I decided to do a little thermostat review. Over the long period of operation of the UAZ, the question of choosing a thermostat arose more than once, and the presence of a nearby workshop and an impressive warehouse of spare parts allowed me not to rely on online reviews, but to check and select the right one in real time. All my injection UAZs have a ZMZ 409 engine, so we will talk about choosing a thermostat specifically for this engine. For reference, throughout the entire production of this engine, regardless of the Euro class, the thermostat has been used with the same design.

I’ll start with the imported TAMA thermostat, which stands out from the standard products.

Good, high quality spare part. It is installed with minor modifications, creates real stable heat under the hood, and maintains a high engine temperature (90 degrees). I rolled this product on 3160. I consider this temperature to be high for our engine; to confirm this, by mid-summer I had the need to grind the cylinder head. Before this the thermostat was 82 degrees. On a UAZ Patriot car, where a fluid coupling is installed as standard, the use of such a thermostat will lead to its frequent activation due to the increased temperature of the engine compartment. In addition, there are domestic “hot” thermostats of decent quality, so don’t dodge so much if you decide to install something for the winter something “hot”).

We've sorted out the imported stuff, now about ours. I’ll start with the standard one, temperature 82. Let’s start with the fact that when buying a product from an unknown manufacturer, be careful, a lot of things have been rearranged that later will not justify the proud title of a thermostat. For example

Now to what you can ride and what you can trust (IMHO). Pramo 82g here it is.

“golden series” ZMZ “double resource”

Pekar 82gr Pekar is a manufacturer of automotive components with a long history. Due to the popularity of the brand, UAZ has expanded its line of spare parts for our horses. For example: shock absorbers, gas sensors, temperature sensors, oils, steering tips, pumps, radiators and much more.

Purpose of the product

The thermostat in the ZMZ-409 cooling system is designed to distribute the flow of engine coolant. Thanks to it, the liquid is distributed into two circuits. The first circuit has a small circle, and the liquid circulates in the cooling jacket and the interior heater radiator. The second circuit also includes the circulation of liquid through a large radiator.

Thus, we can say that a thermos is a kind of regulator that opens a large circle of circulation of coolant after it has been heated. If it were not there, then when the engine was started, fluid would immediately circulate in both circles, which would lead to a very long warm-up of the ZMZ-409 engine.

Peculiarities

The standard Ulyanovsk-made thermostat on the UAZ Patriot SUV Euro-3 and Euro-4 has an extremely short service life. To be more precise, its malfunction lies in the fact that the temperature of the coolant decreases. That is, it was established from the factory that it should operate when the engine temperature reaches 87 degrees and only after that it should turn on and function in this mode. Thanks to the temperature of 87 degrees. (operating temperature of the ZMZ-409 internal combustion engine) ensures normal operation of not only the internal combustion engine, but also the interior heater. When the standard one malfunctions (a very common problem on Patriots), the temperature drops to 76-77 degrees. As a result, the engine operates at the wrong temperature and in the cabin you have to turn the heater control to maximum in order to achieve some warmth in the cabin.

When the thermostat is faulty, it cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new one. But you shouldn’t rush to change the awl for soap, because you can install a higher quality product, like those from Pazhdero. “Pekar” is also known, but its operating temperature is 80 degrees, and in fact it does not rise above 75.

The Tama thermostat is characterized by the following features: it raises the antifreeze temperature one degree higher than standard mechanisms. That is, “Tama” has an operating temperature of 88 degrees, while the standard temperature is 87. On the UAZ Patriot ZMZ-409 SUV with environmental standards Euro-3 and Euro-4, the “Tama” thermostat is installed without changes, since it is sized they are similar.

If you are the owner of an SUV with Euro-2 or lower, then you can install a Tama thermostat, but you will need to replace the plate with the one installed on the standard one. That is, replacement is needed so that “Tama” can block the inlet hole on the pump. In order to install a Tama thermos on a UAZ Patriot SUV Euro-2 and below, you need to adjust it to the standard size.

After replacement, the service life of this unit will be much longer than the standard one, and in addition, the interior will become several degrees warmer with the same position of the heater control. Therefore, if you are wondering which thermos is best for your Patriot, then there is only one solution - “Tama” from Pajero.

So, we looked at what the thermostat on a UAZ Patriot with a ZMZ-409 engine is, and what the operating temperature is. Let's consider when a product needs to be replaced or how to determine its malfunction?

Malfunctions

The first sign of a thermos malfunction is a violation of the temperature regime. That is, if you notice that the operating temperature of the engine is not 87 degrees, but lower, then you should think about replacing the thermos soon. It can also jam, causing the engine to reach temperatures above 87 degrees. In this case, you need to lift the hood and make sure that the cooling fan is working properly and that there is antifreeze in the expansion tank. If the fan is working properly and the antifreeze is normal, then most likely the plate is jammed, as a result of which the liquid does not flow in a large circle and does not cool.

In this case, it is necessary to remove the thermos (we will look at the process below) and check its serviceability. To do this, the product is placed in a container of water, after which the water must be heated. If the water is brought to a boil, and the valve does not react in any way, then it is faulty and requires replacement.

The product is considered working when:

  • the valve opening temperature is 78 degrees;
  • its full opening temperature is 87 degrees.

Replacement

If the operating temperature of the thermos is violated, the product should be replaced. Replacing the thermostat on a UAZ Patriot SUV is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. First, you need to drain the antifreeze.
  2. The fastenings of the power steering pump are unscrewed. The pump is diverted to the side.
  3. The clamp is loosened and the radiator hose is disconnected from the housing where the thermostat is installed.
  4. There are wires on its body that need to be disconnected.
  5. Next, you will need to loosen the upper clamp on the connecting hose of the thermostat and pump.
  6. The screws securing the housing in which it is installed are unscrewed.
  7. Before removing the body, you should loosen the lid and then remove the thermos body.
  8. Now you can unscrew the bolts securing the thermos body cover and clean the old gasket.
  9. After this, the thermostat is removed and replaced with a new one.

The manufacturer recommends installing a similar device, otherwise it is not responsible for the consequences. But this article makes it possible to conclude that it is better to replace the standard thermos with a foreign analogue. Installation of a new product is carried out in the reverse order of removal. After installation, fill in the liquid and check what the operating temperature of the device is now, which should be 87-88 degrees, depending on the installed thermos model.

To summarize, it should be noted that the serviceability of the thermostat on the UAZ Patriot SUV and other cars is very important, since its failure leads to the impossibility of further movement. Good luck with your choice and replacement at home.

Principle of operation

The essence of the thermostat mechanism lies in the cylinder, which is located closer to the internal combustion engine. It is in it that there is a ball that consists of wax. As soon as the temperature rises above 80 degrees, it slowly begins to melt. When exposed to high temperatures, the wax expands and forces the pin out. The pin, in turn, opens the valve cover, which opens the flow of coolant. As soon as the temperature of the internal combustion engine drops, the wax ball returns to its original shape, the pin returns to its position, and the valve cover closes.

Features of the thermostat in UAZ Patriot

With operating experience, UAZ Patriot owners noticed that the standard thermostat for the 409 engine has a short service life. The main reason for incorrect operation is that the valve inside the thermostat begins to open earlier than the temperature level corresponding to the operating mode of the UAZ Patriot engine is reached. If the factory calculates that the thermostat should open when the temperature reaches 87 degrees, which is actually the operating mode, then the valve often begins to open already at 76-78 degrees. What does this situation lead to? Firstly, warming up the engine takes significantly longer, and secondly, in cold weather it becomes problematic to fill the cabin with hot air.

The thermostat on the 409 engine that has shown to be faulty must be unconditionally replaced. Here the owner is advised not to bother changing the unit to a standard analogue, because the risk of changing an awl for soap is very high. You can act more rationally and install a higher quality product, for example, “TAMA” from Pajero.

Another well-known option is “Pekar”, but its operating temperature is 80 degrees, but in reality it barely reaches 75 degrees. A characteristic feature of “TAMA” is the fact that during operation the refrigerant temperature rises by 1 degree. That is, the operating temperature level here is 88 degrees, and when the standard product is functioning - 87 o.

For the ZMZ-409 motor, TAMA is installed without any need for modification, since the geometric parameters of both parts are identical. But this is true for trim levels equipped with Euro 3 or Euro 4 systems.

What if the UAZ Patriot is equipped with Euro 2? In this case, installation is also possible, but with the condition that the thermostat plate is replaced with an analogue from a standard product. This is necessary for the valve to completely close the channel to the pump. It is also possible to “adjust” the existing plate from TAMA to identical dimensions with the standard device.

By performing such a replacement, the owner of the UAZ Patriot will provide a significantly longer thermostat resource, and the engine will begin to warm up with noticeable efficiency.

Now let's move on to considering situations in which the thermostat requires replacement. Let’s also figure out how to identify the presence of a malfunction?

Important! The temperature at which the valve begins to open should be 78 degrees, and at the end of opening – 87 degrees.

The first sign of a malfunction is a violation of the operating temperature when starting the engine. If the reading is below 87 degrees, the thermos will soon fail. If the unit quickly gains a temperature above the stated mark, and the cooling fan operates normally, it means that the valve is jammed.

As practice shows, long-term operation of a car with a jammed thermostat valve can lead to complete failure of the entire unit. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify the breakdown in time and replace the thermostat with a new one. It's quite easy to do this:

  1. We warm up the engine so that the temperature needle does not reach the red zone on the indicator.
  2. We turn off the engine and open the hood.
  3. We find the upper hose connected to the radiator. The black hose is about five cm in diameter.
  4. Then we find the same lower hose.
  5. Carefully touch both hoses in turn.
  6. If the temperature sensor shows that the engine is warm, but one of the hoses is cold, then most likely the thermostat valve is stuck in the closed position.

You can test the mechanism for performance in another way. To do this, you will need to disconnect the thermostat and place it in a container of hot water. If the valve opens, it means the thermos is fully operational.

Important! When purchasing a new mechanism, you need to find out the exact temperature of its operation. If it is too high, the unit will constantly overheat during operation.

What to do if the thermostat fails

If a thermos on a UAZ Patriot breaks down, there are two options for fixing this problem:

  1. Buy an original part from a domestic manufacturer.
  2. Buy a foreign analogue of much better quality, for example -.

As practice shows, imported mechanisms last much longer and perform well in a wide variety of operating conditions. If you decide to install a Tama thermostat on the Patriot engine, you should take into account that its operating temperature is 88 degrees. This is a minor difference compared to a thermostat from a Russian manufacturer. In addition, the Japanese part has similar parameters to the domestic ones, which means there will be no problems with its installation.

How to check the functionality of the thermostat

After the device is replaced with a new one, you need to start the engine and check the cooling system. To do this, open the radiator cap and watch the antifreeze level. Often, when removing the pipes, an air lock is formed, due to which the engine does not cool, and the heater in the cabin blows exclusively cold air.

In order to remove the airlock, you can place the car with the front facing up at an angle of 45 degrees and deliberately decelerate the car. The cork should disappear after 10–15 minutes.

There is also a second way - open the cap on the radiator and pour antifreeze directly into it until the full value is reached. After each topping up, it is necessary to compress and unclench the pipes, thereby expelling the air. Everything will be ready when hot air comes out of the stove and the antifreeze does not float to the surface with bubbles.

The easiest way to check the functionality of the device is to look at the condition of the pipes. Carefully touch the pipes and feel their temperature. If one of them is hot and the other is cold, then the device must be replaced.

There is also a second method by which performance is checked at home. The device is placed in a pan of water and monitored. The water will heat up and as soon as it reaches 95 degrees, the valve cover should open. If this does not happen, then the device is inoperable.

Required maintenance measures

How to maintain a thermostat, focusing on its operational capabilities:

  1. Coolant temperature control. For this purpose, there is a special indicator located on the instrument panel. In addition, overheating of the coolant is indicated by a red lamp with a light filter connected to the sensor. If the temperature regime is violated, it is recommended to check the optimal fluid level in the radiator, the degree of tension of the fan belt, the degree of closure of the blinds or the valve of the engine insulation cover.
  2. Maintenance of the cooling system water pump is another important task for successfully maintaining the good condition of the UAZ 417 engine thermostat. The pump is created using a bearing that has special seals to preserve lubricant. Additional use of lubricant is not required, so it is extremely important to carefully monitor the condition of the units and carry out timely maintenance.
  3. The degree of tension of the fan belt, which is a component of the UAZ 417 cooling system. The recommended deflection is from 8 to 14 millimeters.
  4. The cooling system thermostat should open when the coolant warms up from 69 to 85 degrees, and overheating must be excluded.
  5. The shutters of the cooling system must open correctly, since only in this case the correct operation of the technical units is guaranteed.
  6. For the UAZ 417 car and the full operation of the thermostat, it is recommended to use only high-quality coolant, which is recommended to be replaced taking into account the regulations.

The good condition of the UAZ 417 thermostat has a positive effect on the technical data of the car.

Functions and importance of the thermostat on UAZ

The thermostat installed on the Patriot distributes the flow of antifreeze between the “small” and “large” circles of the cooling system. When starting a cold ZMZ-409 power unit, liquid passes through the channels in the cylinder block and head. As the temperature rises, the valve begins to open, supplying part of the antifreeze to the cooling radiator of the UAZ Patriot.

When the distribution element jams, the temperature regime is disrupted: the power plant does not warm up, or antifreeze boils in the block and head jackets.

The filling volume of the ZMZ-409051.10 and ZMZ-409052.10 engine cooling system (the volume of the block and cylinder head cooling jackets) is 3.6 liters. To fill the engine cooling system, you must use the coolants listed in the table below.

Antifreeze and antifreeze used in the modernized engine cooling system ZMZ-409051.10 and ZMZ-409052.10 on UAZ Patriot, UAZ Pickup and UAZ Pro with automatic transmission Punch 6L50.

Water should not be used as a coolant. The use of water leads to corrosion and scale formation. Which clogs the ducts in the head, cylinder block and radiator.

How to flush the cooling system of a UAZ 469

After long-term operation of the engine, scale, salt deposits, stone, paraffins, and contaminated fluid products accumulate inside the water jacket. The driver asks the question: how to flush the UAZ 469 engine cooling system? There are several simple ways to flush the cooling system.

Many motorists recommend making a solution of citric acid and distilled water in a proportion of 100 grams per bucket of water. There are good professional washes Lavr and Tiret. How to use - you need to look at the packaging of these products.

Malfunctions

As a rule, the thermostat jams directly during operation, but this can happen in two positions:

  1. Closed position. In this case, severe overheating of the engine can occur not only at high air temperatures, but even at slight frost. The thermos may not open completely; the motor in this position, although it will overheat, will not boil.
  2. The valve is stuck open. The result of such a breakdown is that too cold liquid gets into the engine when it starts, and while driving it will not warm up to the required temperature.

Most common problems

When operating a UAZ, it is important to constantly monitor the engine temperature, as it can lead to serious damage to the internal combustion engine.

Since the valve cover has only two positions, there are only 2 most common problems:

  1. The lid is in the closed position and cannot be opened;
  2. The lid is in the open position and will not close.

If the valve does not open, this contributes to overheating of the motors. Since antifreeze will not enter the system, the internal combustion engine operates at an elevated temperature, and even in the most severe frosts it will overheat. In order to reduce heating time, it is recommended to turn on the stove at full power. Also, the valve may not open completely. In this case, the engine will operate at elevated temperatures, but will take a little longer to heat up due to the fact that some of the antifreeze will enter the cooling system.

If the valve is open, it is almost impossible to warm up the engine to operating condition. It will take a very long time to warm up, although the normal engine warm-up time is no more than 10 minutes. Even in hot summer weather, the operating temperature will not exceed 70 degrees.

The most common cause of problems is corrosion, which occurs as a result of operation. Sometimes it is enough to clean it and the device starts working again.

Let's sum it up

As it turns out, the thermostat on a 409 engine is a very important component in the cooling circuit. On the ZMZ-409 UAZ Patriot engine, replacing it turned out to be a simple procedure. The manufacturer recommends replacing a worn-out element with a new factory-made analogue, however, as we understand, this product is not famous for its service life and correct operation. Here it is better to lean towards choosing a higher quality analogue, which we mentioned in this article. After assembling the circuit and starting the engine, we check the system for refrigerant leaks.

Method for connecting a VAZ thermostat

BMW spare part will improve heating

Briefly, installing a VAZ thermostat on a UAZ car is as follows.

  1. Completely or partially drain the coolant and remove all existing hoses, remove the old thermostat, first removing its cover.
  2. Place a short pipe (narrow side) on the outlet of the new thermostat that is closer to the closed end, after lubricating the connection with sealant, tighten the connection with a clamp.
  3. Using any sharp tool, cut a hose whose diameter is larger than the previous one, leaving enough so that you can connect the standard cover with the hose to the second outlet of the new thermostat. These connections only need to be pressed a little with clamps.
  4. Replace the thermostat cover. Select the most convenient position of the thermostat and now tighten all the clamps.
  5. Using a pre-prepared tee, connect all the pipes into a single system, lubricate the connections with sealant, and tighten everything with clamps.
  6. Fill with coolant.
  7. Start the engine and run it at idle speed until all air is removed from the system.

Just like that, a cold UAZ turns into a comfortable, warm car.

Thermostat replacement process

Before replacing the thermostat, you will need to drain the coolant from the circuit. Antifreeze is drained onto the cooled power unit when the heater tap is fully open and is controlled by a rotary control on the center console. To access the radiator, you will need to remove the mud flaps that protect the engine compartment from dirt.

After unscrewing the cap of the compensation tank, it is necessary to open the tap located on the bottom of the heat exchanger. An additional drainage channel is located on the side of the cylinder block.

Algorithm for removing a node:

  1. Remove the bolts securing the hydraulic power steering pump to the steering bracket.
  2. Carefully move the pump to the side, being careful not to break the connecting hoses.
  3. Using a flat blade screwdriver, unscrew the clamp screw holding the coolant supply hose to the thermostat housing.
  4. Pull the sleeve off the pipe.
  5. Disconnect the electrical wiring plug connected to the sensor in the switchgear housing.
  6. Loosen the screw securing the rubber pipe between the antifreeze distributor and the pump.
  7. Remove the 2 screws holding the housing in the mounting window.
  8. If the assembly cannot be removed, loosen the 2 bolts securing the cover to the thermostat housing.

Some owners remove the unit using a simplified procedure:

  1. Disconnect the fluid supply hose to the expansion tank, and pour the antifreeze into a substitute container.
  2. Remove the vapor and air exhaust hose attached to the thermostat body. Some of the coolant leaks to the ground because it is difficult to install a container in the engine compartment.
  3. Unscrew the 2 bolts that hold the cover with the pipe using a 10 mm wrench. The head of the screw located closer to the block does not allow the bolt to be removed from the socket.
  4. Move the casing with the hose to the side and remove the valve with the return spring from the housing.
  5. Install a new element and mount the cover and hoses in their original places.
  6. Bring the antifreeze level to normal, and then warm up the power unit. When the pump operates, air pockets are removed from the lines, so you will need to pour 100-200 ml of liquid into the compensation tank.

Device testing

For further disassembly, you will need to unscrew the bolts and separate the cover. On the opposite side of the housing there is a window through which antifreeze is supplied to the block jacket. The joint line is sealed with a gasket, and the remaining element is removed using a knife.

The seal should not be reused, since a deformed element does not protect against coolant leakage. After removing the cover, you can remove the control valve with the return spring to check its functionality.

To test the unit, a container of water and a thermometer are required. The liquid is heated to 75-78°C, then the unit being tested is lowered into it. As the water warms up, check the temperature at which the valve begins to open. If during testing a deviation of the thermostat parameters from the values declared by the factory is detected, then such a unit is replaced. Also, jamming of the valve during operation is not allowed. After installing the new element into the housing, the cooling system is reassembled.

Drained antifreeze can be refilled only if there are no foreign impurities in the liquid (for example, motor oil and rust). The plant recommends replacing the substance after a mileage of 60 thousand km or after 2 years of operation. The use of antifreeze with signs of degradation is strictly prohibited, since foreign impurities clog the radiator tubes and settle inside the jackets, worsening cooling conditions.
