Chevrolet Cruze – VIN Location and Engine Marking Number
Regardless of body type (sedan, hatchback, station wagon), the Chevrolet Cruze has forensic markings on the floor panel where the front passenger places their feet. We disembark the passenger, lift the carpet, bend the fabric flap and check the VIN for “interruptions” and other evil spirits. It is important to inspect not only the designation itself, but also to look through the entire floor panel for welding.
Chevrolet Cruze of the first years of production, assembled from Korean car kits in the underground, have their own “Korean VIN” starting with KL1, and the main number (“Russian”) in this case will be located on the front right side member:
A sticker duplicating the main VIN is located on the same side of the B-pillar. The only thing is that it is poorly protected from plywood and it would be reckless to trust only it:
An important point when checking a used Chevrolet Cruze before purchasing will be computer diagnostics, during which you can check the VIN registered in the engine control unit:
Cars from the first years of production have a “Korean VIN” in the ECU:

Decoding the VIN code:
All Chevrolet cars produced in Koree have a VIN number that begins with KL. Cars assembled in Kaliningrad, in addition to Korean, also have Russian wine. It starts with XU and the first vehicles had two numbers.
KL1NF686JC3000000: KL1 - the first three characters indicate the international code of the manufacturer; KL1 (Asia, Korea, Chevrolet), XUF (Russia, General Motors Auto) J—the fourth character is the factory designation of the car model; J – Cruze, N – LacettiF – the fifth character indicates the type of transmission (A – Front-wheel drive, automatic transmission;
J—the ninth character indicates the environmental class of the car; J - EURO4, 1 - EURO3C - the tenth digit indicates the model year code of the vehicle;
3 — the eleventh character indicates the manufacturer’s code;
000000 — serial (serial) number of the body
There is a plate on the engine cylinder head that contains the data of interest. To see it you need to look next to the oil dipstick. So, on an engine with a volume of 2.0; 1.8; 1.6 and 1.4 liters, the number will be stamped on the thickening of the cylinder block in the upper right corner. Regardless of the model, its location should always be in one place. In the photo, the red arrow indicates exactly where the number is located.
Corrosion, which Chevrolet Cruze engines suffer from very often, quickly damages the surface of the spare part. After just a year or two of operation, due to exposure to moisture, it will be almost impossible to read the code indicated on the motor, so you need to purchase a special anti-corrosion agent and keep it in the car at all times. By spraying a small amount of the drug onto the surface, you can see all the necessary information within a few seconds.
The engine number allows you to get information about its possible replacement. Motors can be changed for various reasons: accidents, breakdowns due to poor cleaning, an attempt to hide traces of a crime.
VIN: What is VIN?
Learn how to “read VIN numbers.” “The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit string that a car manufacturer assigns to a specific vehicle it produces. You can learn a lot about your car or truck if you can read and decipher its VIN number. . We'll show you how to do it.
What is a VIN number?
Until 1981, there was no standardization of VIN numbers for American car and truck models. Car manufacturers could use 8 digits, 10 digits, 25 digits, or really any number of digits they wanted.
In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration required all automobile manufacturers to use 17 digits. Each number in this 17-digit VIN means something specific about that car. Well, except for one of these numbers, but we'll talk about that later.
Brief information about VIN numbers
Letters "I", "O" and "Q"
The letters "I", "O" and "Q" are not used in VINs from 1981 to today because they are easily confused with the numbers "one" and "zero."
VIN and VIN number
On this page you can see the "VIN number". I understand that saying “Identification number... Number” is stupid, but it certainly rolls off the tongue easier. In the real world, people say that, and being a real person... well, you get the idea.
10th digit of VIN
The letters "U" or "Z" are not used for the 10th digit of the VIN. NHTSA decided that, and that's the way it is.
Foreign cars: VIN information in a different order
The last thing to note is that some foreign car manufacturers change these VIN numbers slightly.
For example, on many Volkswagens, serial numbers 3 through 8 are in a different order than on American brands of cars and trucks. They still have the same VIN information, but in slightly different places. Typically you need to keep an eye on the engine, vehicle series, body type, restraint system and model. Country, manufacturer, check digit, year, plant and serial number are usually found in the same positions regardless of the vehicle manufacturer.
How to decipher the VIN number
The first three digits of the VIN are known as "WMI", which is an acronym for "World Manufacturer Identifier". This includes the country of origin, manufacturer and division for which the vehicle is created.
1st Digit: This digit represents the country in which the vehicle was manufactured. In the example above, the first digit (1) represents "United States"; if it was a "J" it would mean Japan.
2nd digit: The 2nd digit indicates the manufacturer that produced the vehicle. This does not always mean the "make" of the car (eg GMC) because companies like General Motors have many different divisions. They have Chevy, Buick and GMC as well as many others. In the example above, the second digit of the VIN would indicate "General Motors".
3rd Digit: The 3rd Digit is the division of the larger manufacturer. In the case of General Motors, the more specific division would be Buick, Cadillac, etc. So, in the example above, the "N" stands for "Chevy".
Numbers four through eight are called VIN attributes. They include information such as safety, engine size, body type and vehicle series.
4th digit: 4th digit is safety, braking and suspension. For example, if you have a special option, eight-wheel heavy duty truck, or tow package, this figure will indicate the vehicle has a special suspension and brake kit. This could also apply to a specific safety package, such as if the car had the option of two or eleven airbags.
5th digit: The 5th digit, in this case "S", which represents the series of the car. For example, in the 1980s, General Motors produced full-size trucks in the C and K series, as well as the R and V series. The C/K had a different body style than the R/V. "C" and "R" denoted two-wheel drive. "K" and "V" stood for four-wheel drive. These letters would have been the fifth digit of the VIN on these trucks. This was/is important when ordering parts because "1988 Chevy Truck" can mean a lot of things depending on what the letter is. In this image above we have the S series which is the S-10 series truck. Then there was the T series.
6th and 7th digits: The 6th and 7th digits represent body style. So, if a car is a convertible, two door, four door or estate car, it is defined by these two numbers.
8th Digit: The 8th digit, in this case “Z,” is one of my favorites. This is the engine size! So if you were to go to the scrapyard, this figure will really come in handy for cars with two different engines in the same year. The S10 Truck or S10 Blazer are great examples of this. Both of these trucks could have had a 4.3 liter Z series engine or a W series engine. Both engines were 4.3 liters, but they had different parts attached to them. Buying parts for these engines is always interesting, and this figure is what makes it so .
9th Digit: The 9th digit is called the check digit. It's called a check digit because its purpose is to check the remainder of the VIN for legitimacy. This is done by entering the VIN numbers using complex mathematics. Hopefully the number that comes out at the end of the equation is number nine. If it comes out as something else, you know the VIN number is fictitious.
10th Digit: The 10th digit is the year, which is useful if you are in a junkyard or showing off to your friends. You can easily determine which years correspond to which letters and which numbers using the table below. Print it out and throw it in your wallet. Someday you will be able to thank us.
In today's example, the tenth digit is "M", so if you look at the table, you will see that "M" is for 1991. This is great for junkyards because you can walk up to the VIN number and say, “Hey. it's VIN J, which means it's a 1988."
VIN number Year Table
11th digit: The 11th digit is the manufacturer. As you might guess, this is where the car was made! This isn't that big of a deal unless you're talking about certain cars that have a lot of fans. Corvettes are a great example of this. Many, many Corvettes were built in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There's even a museum there! So whenever you talk about Corvettes, Bowling Green inevitably comes up. The eleventh digit of the VIN number is the number that confirms the plant where the car was built.
It could be Lansing, Michigan; Detroit, Michigan; or anywhere in Illinois. Car manufacturers have factories all over the world.
Last six digits: The last six digits are the production line numbers. Most car manufacturers start with the number 100001 as a starting point. This is usually not a very important number when buying auto parts, unless you have a car whose manufacturing specifications were changed mid-production cycle. So, you might have a car with different mirrors if it was built in April 2004 and then, if it was built in August 2004. If you have one of these cars, you'll need to know where it was on the production line, which is where those last six digits become important.
How to find option codes
In addition to the VIN, there are also many option codes located somewhere inside every vehicle. These were once actual printed sheets of paper that were inserted into the seat springs.
In modern cars, this is usually a printed sticker in the glove compartment, console or trunk. When you combine the VIN number with the option codes, you get the entire genetic makeup of the car from top to bottom.
New Chevrolet Cruze body and its identification
I recommend to your attention the Chevrolet Cruze, the new body of which is a compact and stylish city car. The Chevrolet Cruze in a new body gives the driver the ability to maneuver both in the difficult road conditions of a modern city and when parking in a tight parking lot, which certainly significantly reduces the likelihood of an emergency situation on the road (unlike bulky jeeps and premium cars).
But at the same time, the body of the Chevrolet Cruze cannot be called small-sized, the length of the sedan body is 4.597 meters, the width is 1.797 meters and the height is 1.477 meters, while the length of the hatchback is slightly shorter and is only 4510 millimeters. Yes, you yourself can see with your own hands (or rather, with your eyes) how the body of a Chevrolet Cruze differs depending on the car model:
Instructions "Chevrolet Cruz: bodywork, dimensions"
Body dimensions
The geometry of the Chevrolet Cruze body has also undergone some changes. The main control points for fastening components and assemblies, as well as the dimensions of the openings, can be checked using the following parameters:
Colors
A pleasant bonus is the fact that the manufacturer provides the potential buyer with a large selection of Chevrolet Cruzes, the body colors of which are painted in eight different shades. At the same time, the price of the “color” version does not significantly exceed the cost of the basic/white color (as a rule, this difference does not exceed ten thousand rubles).
Identification (VIN) number
You must have heard this mysterious phrase “VIN code/number” more than once in everyday life. What does it mean?
In short, the VIN is the same barcode that is applied to all the products you buy in the store.
In every modern car, as well as on the Chevrolet Cruze, the body has its own identification number, by reading which you can find out absolutely all the information about the car you are interested in.
What is it for?
Even the simplest and most inconspicuous car has a lot of different modifications, codes and numbers, and even all its spare original parts and duplicates have their own personal number. Therefore, almost every Chevrolet Cruze body repair requires a VIN code.
This is where you will find the spare parts and Chevrolet Cruze body parts you need. And who wouldn’t want to know complete and comprehensive information about the car that you are going to buy secondhand, which is also “tied” to the VIN code?
In addition, when the Chevrolet Cruze needs painting, the car body parts will be painted exactly in their original color, which is again indicated in the VIN number.
VIN code location
In addition to the above functions, on a Chevrolet Cruze the body number also carries protective functions that are designed to help protect your car from intruders: when registering, the identification number is registered in the database, which always helps law enforcement agencies identify the true owner of this car.
By the way, the car’s engine also has its own unique number, which can also be used to determine whether the power unit belongs to a specific car; it is located to the right of the exhaust manifold, on a small area (marked with a red arrow in the photo):
But, despite its importance for car owners, many of them have absolutely no idea where the body number is located on a Chevrolet Cruze.
As a rule, the VIN number is applied to integral components of the chassis or body, as well as on special number plates.
VIN number, where it is located
Important! The wine does not break into details; it is written on special plates or stickers.
A unique code, which contains information about all the characteristics of the car, is located in several places. To make it easier to find and save information, one sticker is located to the right of the driver, where the passenger’s feet should be. The table with the code is closed with a plastic plug.
If it is not possible to find primary information about the body data, the sticker is damaged or missing altogether, then there are duplicate plates on the body, there are two of them. Typically, they are located in the front of the car, on the left B-pillar. Thus, the driver, when sitting in his seat, will always see the vehicle data.
If there is no plate with a code, or only half is present, then when registering a vehicle, such cars may be sent for additional examination by State Traffic Inspectorate employees, which means financial costs and a loss of time.

Small summary
In this case, we looked at the most popular problem of engine failure on a Chevrolet Cruze, got acquainted with all the power plants, and also learned about the Chevrolet Cruze, which engine is better and how to replace it. However, it is worth clarifying this detail that each power unit has its own malfunctions, which is why you need to know the mechanism number of your particular Chevrolet Cruze model in order, if necessary, to use the help of the Internet or a hotline specialist at the nearest car service center, if the power unit needs replacement or repair, and you are far from the nearest service station.
Third generation
The Chevrolet station wagon was presented in Switzerland in March 2012 and already appeared in the markets of many countries around the world in the summer. In Russia, the model was included in the top 10 best-selling cars. Due to its relative novelty on the Internet, it is classified as the third generation of Chevrolet, which is not entirely true - rather, it is a second-generation model that completes this series.
Despite the increased dimensions - length 4675 mm, width 1797 mm - the modification retained its presentable interior and dynamic appearance. However, the dimensions affected the weight of the car - its mass is 1899 kg. The spacious luggage compartment of the Chevrolet station wagon has a volume of 500 liters, and with the rear seats removed – 1478 liters.
Decoding
Unique car codes contain information about the manufacturer. Thus, the code indicated on the Korean Cruze will begin with the characters KL. Models produced at the Kaliningrad plant have Korean and Russian wines starting with the characters XU. When registering the first vehicles with such features, the documents indicated 2 numbers at once.
The VIN information is not the only data on the table.
The code, which encrypts all information about the car, consists of 17 numbers or symbols of the Latin alphabet. The code example in the table shows:
Body serial number – the remaining 6 characters. This model is assigned serial number 05295.

Geographically, the engine number of all units is located in the same place - on the inclined edge of the front part of the cylinder block near the gearbox. It’s just that it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to immediately pick up and find the designation without properly wiping it in the right place with a cloth.
The most difficult thing will be for those who want to check the numbers on the version with the 1.8 F18D4 engine. In just 3-4 years, the markings rot so that you have to rub for several hours, and not only the material from which the cylinder block is cast is to blame, but also the oil filter housing - nothing more than a thin screwdriver, lightly wrapped in a cloth, to the engine number doesn't fit:
You will have to rub directly under the oil filter.
In a short time, the engine number becomes corroded and at first it may seem that the number is not there at all.
Two hours of work and the number appeared. Even the trace of the factory cutter is visible. Remember that the main thing is no sandpaper. There should also be a duplicate sticker with a number on the motor, but only the hardware can be taken seriously:
On the 1.6 engine called F16D3 the number does not disappear so quickly. Many thanks to the ever leaking valve cover gasket:

Here the symbol indicates the installation of a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. There may be another symbol - A, on a model with an automatic transmission, but the Chevrolet Cruze is always front-wheel drive. Next, encryption begins with numbers, where 68 is the designation of the body type.
On Cruze models, the 68 is a hatchback with four doors and six side windows. There may be another designation for models with a station wagon - 35, for sedans with four doors and six windows on the sides - Decoding vin chevrolet cruze the engine is located with a volume of 1.6 liters.

Won't start after washing
Despite the fact that the car model is reliable and easy to maintain, some owners may encounter such a serious problem as the engine not starting after the washing procedure. Most often this is due to the fact that during the washing process moisture penetrated inside the power plant or starting system. Since starting the Chevrolet Cruze engine is mainly designed for electrics, you have to either wait for complete drying, or try to independently find a place where moisture could get in and wipe it with a dry cloth.
If you don’t know what to do in this situation, then it is better to entrust this work to a specialist who can accurately tell the cause of the malfunction and eliminate it in the shortest possible time. Also, do not forget that the cause of the malfunction may be different for each motor. Due to the fact that different units are installed on the Cruze model, it is extremely important to know what model engine you have.
This information can be found in the vehicle's technical passport, or by finding the unit number under the hood. Many car enthusiasts wonder where the Chevrolet Cruze engine number is located? In this case, the answer to this question is quite simple, you need to open the hood of the Chevrolet Cruze, where the engine number is located on the unit, namely on the cylinder block.
If you could not find the engine number on the Chevrolet Cruze, then open the hood and find the oil dipstick, just next to it there is a metal plate with a number by which you can determine the model of the power plant.
First generation
Initially, a car model under the Cruz brand was presented to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009. It was mass produced in the period 2001–2008. in the form of a small hatchback, later a crossover, mainly for the countries of Southeast Asia. An upgraded version with an additional all-round visibility system was sold in some countries under the name Suzuki Ignis.
The dimensions of the subcompact body are small: wheelbase length 4580 mm, width from 1730 mm without mirrors, with a weight of 900 kg depending on the configuration. At the same time, the minimum volume of the Chevrolet luggage compartment is 235 liters, and the maximum, if the rear seats are folded, is up to 525 liters.
As can be seen from the main characteristics, despite its small overall dimensions, the Chevrolet Cruze has a relatively spacious trunk. The model ideally implements the general concept of a car for the Asian market: small dimensions with maximum use of internal space.
