“Synthetics” owes its appearance to the chemical synthesis of molecular compounds. This oil has a high evaporation temperature. This quality allows you to maintain all the operational parameters of the lubricant at high engine loads.

Among the oils, there is an intermediate option - semi-synthetic. These are oils that have synthetic and mineral components. When making a choice in favor of one type of oil or another, it is necessary to take into account that synthetics and semi-synthetics contain various active additives that can destroy some engine elements in older cars. This is due to the fact that previously they used a material that had low resistance to the high chemical activity that modern oils have.

How to choose a lubricant for VAZ 2109

Once the type of lubricant has been selected, it is necessary to determine the viscosity of the oil, the value of which can be understood from the alphanumeric code on the packaging. For example, 10W-40. The first number shows the viscosity of the material at negative temperatures. The second no less important point that needs to be taken into account when buying oil is driving style. If you prefer to drive fast and harshly, i.e. with high engine loads, it is preferable to buy oil that has a high viscosity at high temperatures: 10W-50, 5W-50 and even 0W-50. Changing the oil in a VAZ 2109 engine is not the easiest process, but you can handle this task if necessary. It is also recommended to change the oil if you have not operated the VAZ 2109 for a long time. Changing the oil in a VAZ 2109 engine is not difficult. Every car owner can handle this job. We offer you step-by-step instructions for performing this service work.

1. First you need to warm up the engine, for which we let it run for about 5 minutes.
2. The car is driven into a garage pit or overpass. With a certain amount of skill, you can carry out all the work without a pit or overpass. In this case, you need to carefully crawl under the car and place a flat container under the crankcase for old lubricant.
3. We find the drain plug on the oil pan and use a 17 key to unscrew it. Dark waste fluid will begin to flow out of the crankcase. We wait until it flows out, this usually takes 20-30 minutes.
4. After this, we change the filter, which is unscrewed manually without using a tool. In rare cases, the threads of the filter may become rusty, making it impossible to unscrew it by hand. In this case, you can use a special wrench or simply pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver and act as a lever.
5. As soon as the old auto lubricant stops dripping from the drain plug, you need to screw in a new filter, then screw the plug into place and carefully clamp it with a wrench. When tightening the filter, you should pour a little oil into it and lubricate the rubber gasket, which will prevent it from burning to the threads and will ensure better sealing of the system.
6. We unscrew the filler plug located on the cylinder head. We recommend adding oil using a funnel to avoid spilling it on the engine. Subsequently, such spilled liquid will burn for a long time and cause an unpleasant odor.
7. After filling three liters, you should check the dipstick, which will allow you to determine how much oil you have poured into the engine. If necessary, add fluid so that the level is between maximum and minimum.
8. Close the filler plug and start the car. Let the engine run for a few minutes, then turn off the engine and check the lubrication level again.
9. Inspect the car for leaks and, if necessary, tighten the oil filter or drain plug in the crankcase.

The procedure for replacing engine oil on a VAZ 2109-2108

So, when the engine is hot, you need to place a container of at least 4 liters under the pan and unscrew the plug, which is clearly shown in the photo below:

When the nut rotates freely, you can unscrew it completely by hand so as not to drop the plug into the container with the waste:

And we wait at least 5 minutes until all the waste drains from the pan, and then you can immediately screw the plug into place:

Then we take a new filter, pour oil into about half of its capacity and be sure to lubricate the rubber seal:

And fill in about 3.5 liters of fresh oil:

After a few minutes, pull out the dipstick and check the level. On VAZ 2109-2108 cars it should be between the MIN and MAX marks - closer to the maximum mark. We put the plug in place and start the engine. During the first start after replacement, the oil pressure indicator lamp may light for a couple of seconds, after which it will go out.

VAZ-2109 owners pour 3.5 liters of oil into the engine, but it is better to buy a 4-liter can. In this case, after filling, a little more liquid will remain, which can be gradually used. for example, add oil every 100-200 kilometers. What lubricants were popular in the USSR? The most common gear oil at that time was TAD-17I. This product was created specifically for helical and hypoid gears. However, for some reasons, the TAD-17I turned out to be unsuitable for use at modern checkpoints. Its increased viscosity and special additives did not contribute to the complete formation of a film on the working surfaces of the synchronizers.

In this regard, the alignment of the angular velocity of the gears and the coupling was not ensured. Therefore, the gears on the transmissions of the “nines” were engaged with very great effort, and during the shift, the characteristic sound of gears jamming was formed. All this not only created discomfort while driving, but also significantly reduced the life of the gearbox, which led to accelerated breakdown.

According to the state standard, substances of the TM-1 and TM-2 groups turned out to be more suitable oils for “nines”, which ensured a longer service life and durability of gearbox parts. At the same time, the popular TAD-17I complied with the TM-5 standard, so using it on new transmissions was simply impractical, since the main pair on the “eights” and “nines” had not a hypoid, but a helical gear.
