Recommendations for choosing and changing oil in the gearbox of a VAZ-21099 car

Pink dream of the 90s

The VAZ-21099 car still remains very popular not only in Russia, but also in almost all CIS countries. It is surprisingly repairable - you can handle most breakdowns yourself. One of the most common operations that have to be done is changing the oil and diagnosing the lubrication system of the engine and gearbox. Lubrication in a VAZ engine plays a very important role, so before each trip you should carefully inspect the car and its parking place. You will also need maximum attention if the oil pressure light suddenly blinks. This may indicate either a leak or a more serious breakdown.

How much oil is included in a VAZ 2109 box?

It is very important to replace the TM inside the gearbox on a VAZ 2109 in a timely manner. Domestic cars require constant replacement of oil fluids, just like foreign brands of cars. The oil in the VAZ 2109 gearbox must be changed constantly, just like in other cars.

Using the VAZ 2109 as an example, let's look at how to properly change the oil in the gearbox, as well as what fluid to choose and how often it should be done.

When should TM be changed?

Different experts have different opinions on this matter, but the majority is inclined to believe that the oil fluids inside the car for the VAZ 2109 gearbox should be changed every 30,000 kilometers, or once a year. But, of course, everything depends on the operating conditions and the roads on which the vehicle travels, so in a gentle mode, gear oil can serve well for 50,000 kilometers.

Every motorist should constantly check the quality of the working oil fluid, preferably at least every 10,000 kilometers. If the oil has acquired an unpleasant dark color, abrasive particles are visible in its structure, or foreign sediment is visible, then it is better to replace the oil composition. This way you will not only prevent car damage, but also protect your travel on the road.

Specialists oblige all motorists to replace the working oil fluids inside the VAZ 2109 gearbox every time the gearbox is repaired. This way you can prevent contamination and erosion of new parts, and most importantly, you will know that gear shifting is done efficiently.

Types of gearbox 2109

There are two types of gearboxes for nines, and therefore the fluid replacement procedure is different:

  • serviced - gearbox with dipstick. In the engine compartment next to the battery there is a dipstick for monitoring the oil level in box 2109. These are 5-speed gearboxes.
  • maintenance-free - gearbox without a dipstick. They are mounted on the 2109, which only has 4 gears and no 5th. These cars have a special filler neck.

Oil change process

Changing the oil in a VAZ 2109 gearbox itself is not very difficult, so you can do it on your own and without contacting specialists at a car service center.

Replacement tool

To change the oil in gearbox 2109 or 2108 you will need the following tool:

  • The keys you will need are ring or rack keys for 17 and 12;
  • drain empty container or container;
  • for a gearbox without a dipstick - a syringe for filling, and for a gearbox with a dipstick - a filler funnel;
  • Having a rag or rag to wipe away oil drips will not hurt.

Having prepared this equipment, you can now change the used oil fluid. Its replacement in the VAZ 2109 gearbox is carried out in several stages.

Drain the oil

Before replacing, you need to go to the pit. This will make it more convenient to drain the old motor oil from the gearbox. The whole process takes no more than 20 minutes.

Types of gearboxes

The manufacturer installed two types of transmissions on VAZ 2109 cars:

We will look into how much oil is in a VAZ 2109 box of one type or another below. The serviced box has a dipstick with which you can check the level of transmission fluid inside.

The maintenance-free version is equipped with only drain and fill holes, so you will have to try a little to control the lubricant level. As a rule, oil is always poured to the very edge of the filler hole, so to control the level you need to drive the right front wheel onto a hill, for example, a brick, and tear the filler plug. If grease begins to ooze from it, then the oil is at the level. This is the easiest way to check the oil volume in a VAZ 2109 gearbox.

Changing the oil in the gearbox Lada 21083 (VAZ 21083)

The gearbox oil is changed every 75,000 km or after 5 years of operation. There may also be unscheduled replacements caused by oil leakage from the gearbox due to leaking seals.

In general, when driving a VAZ 2108 2109 21099, you should keep in mind that this car does not have metal protection for the engine crankcase and gearbox housing.

Therefore, if you run over a stone, a curb, a stump, in general, any obstacle that rises 20 centimeters above the road surface and hit it with the gearbox, then you are guaranteed to have it replaced.

The fact is that the gearbox housing is cast iron, and it cracks under mechanical shock. And oil escapes through the cracks formed. A broken gearbox cannot be repaired; it will only be used for spare parts. Therefore, be careful when driving in the forest and in fields with tall grass. On VAZ 2108 2109 21099 cars, serviced and unserviced gearboxes are used.

The serviced gearbox is equipped with a dipstick to monitor the oil level in it. The non-serviceable one has only drain and fill holes. Accordingly, it is very problematic to control the oil level in it. Usually they fill the oil to the very top, and to control it, run the right front wheel onto a brick. When the right wheel is on a brick, the oil level in the box on the side of the filler plug becomes slightly higher.

You unscrew the plug a little - if oil starts to flow, then its level is fine. There is another way to control the oil level in a non-serviceable VAZ 2108 2109 21099 gearbox, but more on that a little later. So, you have a need to change the oil in the box.

And again, as in the case of motor oil, we are faced with the question: what kind of oil to fill in? According to the car's operating instructions, it is necessary to fill in 80w-95 transmission oils, however, the same instructions stipulate that it is allowed to fill the gearbox with engine oil.

When pouring engine oil into the gearbox of a VAZ 2108 2109 21099, there are two advantages: 1) Engine oil is cheaper than transmission oil 2) Engine oil in cold winters is less viscous (it is easier to change gears in a cold car). Therefore, again, considering that, for the most part, the VAZ 2109 is a budget car, filling with engine oil is preferable. So, first you need to drain the old oil from the gearbox.

If you change the oil in the summer, then everything is fine. If it’s winter, it’s better to drive the car a couple of kilometers before changing it so that the oil is thinner. It is necessary to prepare a container where you will drain the old oil. If you have an overpass or a hole in the garage, then the process of draining the oil will be simple. If you need to lie under the car on the ground, then you need to find a low bucket or basin to place under the transmission drain hole.

We take the key 17 and crawl under the car, first unscrew the filler hole (to ensure air access), then place a container under the drain hole and unscrew the drain plug. About three liters of oil should spill out; if less spills out, it means you were driving with a poorly lubricated gearbox. When the oil has completely stopped draining, or flows in a thin stream for a long time, screw the drain plug into place.

Now you need to fill the gearbox of your VAZ 2109 with new oil. The manufacturer recommends doing this through the filler hole. Of course, in a VAZ 2109 with a serviceable gearbox, this is easy to do: take out the dipstick, insert a funnel into this hole, and fill in the oil. However, in gearboxes without a dipstick (not serviceable), it is very difficult to do this: the funnel is not inserted into this hole.

If you build something like a hose with a cut bottle screwed to it, then the filling process will be very long (although this is also a good option).

Therefore, the recommendation is as follows: fill oil through the speedometer drive hole using a bulb. A pear is an ordinary large enema, the larger the capacity, the better. Unscrew the nut securing the speedometer drive and remove it.

We leave the drive hanging on the side (the main thing is not to smear it, but we ourselves suck new oil from the container into the bulb, then we bring the bulb to the hole of the speedometer drive and squeeze it into the box. We do this until the oil flows from the filler hole left open on the side of the box transmission

If it leaks, tighten the side filler hole. Through the speedometer drive hole you can clearly see what oil level is now in the box. This can be used to periodically check the oil level in the box - remove the speedometer drive, check the level, and replace the speedometer drive. And there is absolutely no need to crawl under the car.

We put the speedometer drive in place and tighten it with the nut.

That's it, you have new oil in your gearbox.

To home

Note! You have already noticed that the oil change described in this article will take place on an old-style gearbox, but not all cars had it installed from the factory; if your car has a new-style gearbox installed, then (see “Changing the oil in new style box")

How to change the oil in a box?

Draining: 1) First, completely remove the drain plug.

Note! When you completely unscrew the plug, immediately place a small 4-5 liter container under the drain hole. And then let the used oil completely drain into this container!

2) Then, when the oil is completely drained from the hole, screw the drain plug back tightly.

Note! Before wrapping the cork, wipe it with a rag to remove all kinds of dirt!

Filling: 1) First, unscrew the plug but only to the oil filler hole.

Note! In the photo, the filler plug is already unscrewed!

2) And then use an oil syringe to fill in new oil through the filler hole.

Note! Oil must be filled until it begins to pour out of the filler hole!

THIS IS INTERESTING: Frequently asked question: Where is Toyota Land Cruiser Prado manufactured?

3) When you finish filling in new oil, screw the filler plug back in after wiping it with a rag to remove dirt and old oil.

Important! 1) The gearbox contains approximately 3.0-3.5 liters. butter! 2) Do not change the oil without warming it up, and in order to warm it up, you will need to drive the car about 10 km before changing the oil!

When is an oil change necessary?

In addition, it is worth remembering what mileage is on the odometer after the previous such replacement. Perhaps the answer to such a question cannot be found immediately.

Therefore, if the oil has “changed” at all possible times, you cannot expect smooth operation of the gear shift mechanism.

The first step is to drain the used oil. For this, a container with a wide neck of suitable volume is useful. To drain the oil more completely, clean the transmission breather to ensure uninterrupted air flow.

If the volume of the syringe is insufficient, the filling procedure will need to be repeated. And specialized workshops have appropriate equipment for such purposes.

What kind of oil to fill

The most interesting thing is that according to the regulations, it is allowed to fill the VAZ 2109, 2108 and 21099 manual transmissions with motor oil, but with the proviso that the replacement will be carried out as in the engine - once every 10 - 15 thousand kilometers. But such measures were resorted to earlier, when gear oils were practically impossible to find. Now the range of these fluids is so wide that many, even avid car enthusiasts with extensive driving experience, get lost and take a long time to choose the appropriate transmission fluid. To avoid confusion and ensure you get exactly what you need, follow these instructions:

  • The basic rule is that expensive does not mean quality (when choosing, do not rely on price; usually, the more expensive the oil, the higher the likelihood of counterfeiting)
  • First of all, pay attention to the marking, the viscosity should be 80W-85 or 80W-90
  • The oil class must be GL-4 or GL-5, which corresponds to the domestic markings TM-3 and TM-4.
  • For cars of the VAZ family, there are transmission fluids specially designed for them, for example, Rexol T, Omskoil Trans P and Volonez TM4. If you come across these brands, purchase one of them without hesitation.
  • Purchase any oils only in specialized stores and from official dealers! This is very important to avoid counterfeits.

How to add oil to a VAZ 2109 box

Frequency of oil change in gearbox VAZ 2108-2109-21099

  • oil level indicator (dipstick)
  • 2 – breather

The frequency of oil changes is every 75,000 km or every 5 years.

Transmission housing capacity

It is recommended to drain the oil immediately after the trip, until the Lada Samara gearbox has cooled down.

Always keep the oil level close to the upper mark, but it should not exceed the upper mark, otherwise oil may leak from the gearbox. The lower mark indicates the minimum permissible oil level. If the oil level drops below this mark, the gears will not be sufficiently lubricated and the VAZ 2108 gearbox will quickly fail.

Unscrew the plug and fill the VAZ 21099 gearbox with oil using a syringe to the bottom edge of the oil filler hole.

Transmission oil serves to lubricate the mechanical components of the gearbox. Due to it, the structure lasts longer, is more reliable, and friction of metal elements from each other is prevented.

Today, various oils are used for gearboxes, each of which has its own characteristics.

Oil type

Peculiarities

The most expensive, high-performance gear oils. They ensure reliable, long-term operation of the box. But it is not advisable to purchase them for the VAZ 2109, since this oil is more suitable for expensive imported cars or more modern domestic cars

The optimal choice for VAZ 2109 and cheap foreign cars. This oil preserves the performance of gearbox gears and extends their service life. With a high level of quality, semi-synthetics have an attractive price for Nine owners. Change every 75 thousand kilometers

The cheapest gear oils, which are best avoided even for the VAZ 2109. To a certain extent, they perform their functions, but they cannot be recommended. If there is no alternative solution, you can use synthetics or semi-synthetics as a temporary replacement.

Quantity

We have determined which oil is best to pour into the Nine gearbox, now we will determine how much lubricant is in the gearbox of the VAZ 2109 model.

In many ways, the amount of oil you fill depends on whether you are replacing it completely or partially. The volume of lubricant in the gearbox is approximately 3 liters. Between partial and complete replacement, we recommend choosing a complete one.

When pouring lubricant into the gearbox, use the dipstick as a guide. The optimal filling of the transmission crankcase is the mark between the minimum and maximum levels on the dipstick.

Filling the gearbox with lubricant

Replacement features

Now we proceed directly to the procedure for changing the transmission oil. The task is not difficult, but it is not worth approaching this issue lightly.

To get started, check out the general recommendations:

  • Always have a dry cloth ready to wipe the dipstick when removing it from the boat;
  • Before checking the lubricant level, warm up the car and change 1-2 gears;
  • It is necessary to check the lubricant level before and after replacement;
  • If your VAZ 2109 is not equipped with a dipstick, use the lower edge of the oil filler hole as a guide. The liquid should reach this edge, but not be higher or lower than this mark.

Possible reasons why an oil change is necessary

It is worth noting that in model 2109 (21099) and others like it, the gearboxes are, so to speak, “indestructible”. But even such a reliable unit has periods when, for further uninterrupted operation, it is necessary to carry out maintenance in the form of replacing the transmission fluid. If rustling or other noises begin to be heard from the box, the unit produces strong vibrations, gears shift worse and are accompanied by unpleasant sounds - the time has come for an oil change. To begin with, check the oil level with a dipstick (if the replacement was made recently), and inspect the unit itself for leaks. Only then proceed directly to the replacement itself.

Recommendations for choosing and changing oil in the gearbox of a VAZ-21099 car

Changing the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ-21099 car directly affects the technical condition of the vehicle, the quality and life of parts, safety and driving comfort. Transmission oil fluid promotes smooth operation of the mechanism, reduces the friction of parts against each other and acts as a heat exchanger, preventing the gearbox from failing due to overheating.

The gearbox oil should be changed regularly.

Theoretical information

Before the replacement process, any car owner is interested in the question - how many liters of oil are in the box of a VAZ-21099 car. From the technical factory documentation it follows that the 5-speed gearbox contains 3.3 liters, and the 4-speed gearbox contains exactly 3 liters.

Oil change intervals

Based on factory documentation, the oil needs to be changed every 70–80 thousand kilometers, but at least once every 4–5 years with an average annual mileage of 15–16 thousand km.

In reality, the situation is somewhat different - weather conditions, environmental conditions, operating and storage (parking) conditions have a serious impact on replacement intervals. According to experts, replacement must be done every 35 - 40 thousand km.

, while in the interval after 30 thousand km. It is already possible that primary signs of violations may appear:

  • heavy and imprecise gear shifting;
  • extraneous noise;
  • vibrations.

If the above symptoms have recently begun to appear in your car, we strongly advise you to change the oil as soon as possible - this will reduce wear on gearbox parts and compensate for possible losses from breakdowns.

Which oil to choose

The manufacturer recommends the following brands of oil for the VAZ-21099 gearbox:

  • Volnez TM4” (80W-90; GL-4);
  • Omskoil trans P (80W-85; GL-4/5);
  • Rexol T (80W-85; GL-4).

Among experienced motorists, the choice fell on what they considered to be more reliable manufacturers:

  • Idemitsu;
  • Mobil;
  • Castrol;
  • Zic.

When making the initial replacement in a VAZ-21099 gearbox and lacking experience in using products from any manufacturer, it is worth focusing on the opinions of friends, reviews of car enthusiasts on the Internet and advice from reputable publications, which will ultimately allow you to make the right and informed choice. We advise you to fill the gearbox with oil made by Zic or Castrol.

Level control and required volume

While operating the vehicle, it is necessary to constantly monitor the oil level in the gearbox using a dipstick. There are two control marks (dashes) on the dipstick, indicating the minimum and maximum oil levels in the gearbox. The minimum mark indicates the need for topping up (usually the operation is performed every 4 - 5 thousand km), and the maximum mark indicates that there is no reason for concern.

Control is carried out as follows:

  1. At the gearbox, the dipstick is unscrewed or removed (the hole from it is usually used as a filler neck).
  2. Wipe the metal part with a dry, clean cloth.
  3. Insert the dipstick back and take it out again - you see the actual oil level in the gearbox.

The standard is considered to be the volume of lubricating fluid in the range between minimum and maximum, i.e. approximately in the middle of the marks.

Topping up oil

Oil is added to the “21099” gearbox only after checking the level and taking into account its tendency to a minimum. As a rule, from 0.5 to 0.8 liters are added to a 5-mortar, and up to 0.6 liters to a 4-mortar.

THIS IS INTERESTING: Frequently asked question: How to check spark plugs with a Tseshka?

It is important to use for topping up oil of the same manufacturer and the same viscosity that is currently used in the gearbox of your car; mixing is unacceptable and can lead to complete failure of the gearbox or its individual parts. Add oil using an oil syringe or funnel, then measure the level using a dipstick.

Typically, topping up is done in stages, periodically checking the level, since a volume in excess of the maximum will lead to squeezing out of the gearbox through gaskets, seals and drives, which will certainly lead to their replacement.

What is needed for replacement

For manual replacement, you need to prepare the following set of tools and available materials:

  • overpass, lift or pit;
  • socket wrench for 12 and 17;
  • filler syringe or funnel;
  • soft wire, flexible hose 25 - 30 cm long, electrical tape;
  • canister or other empty container with a volume of 4 - 5 liters;
  • 5 liter replacement oil;
  • dry clean cloth.

Before starting the replacement, warm up the car and take a short trip of 5–6 kilometers.

Step-by-step instruction

Having prepared the car and all the necessary tools for changing the gearbox oil with our own hands, we begin to drain the old lubricant and clean the associated elements.

Filling with new oil

If the gearbox is equipped with a filler neck, then the filling process is quite simple:

  1. Insert a funnel into the filler neck.
  2. Fill in 3 – 3.3 liters of oil depending on the number of gears in the box.
  3. Check the level with a dipstick.

If there is no filler neck, use an oil syringe after placing a flexible hose on it and securing the connection with electrical tape.

  1. Fill the syringe full (we track the final volume by the level on the canister).
  2. Insert the hose into the filler hole and use a syringe to pour in the required amount of lubricant.
  3. Tighten the filler plug tightly.

The process of changing the oil in a gearbox is complicated only at first glance and can take a long time during the first change; later you will be able to perform this operation in a matter of minutes and even with your eyes closed. The main thing is not to forget, or better yet, write down the mileage at which the last replacement was made.

Manufacturer's choice

We have already listed the brief characteristics, and now you can delve into the choice of oil manufacturer for the Samara gearbox. So, who does the best on the VAZ 2109?

Domestic manufacturers

So:

  • The gearbox oil declared by the plant is TM-4-12. Ideally, you should use it, of course. This oil was specially developed for the gearbox of this particular vehicle.
  • Using logic, we come to the conclusion that since it was specially developed, it must be the best. The manufacturer may be different - for example, Rexol.
  • For example, the M6z12G1 engine oil used in the VAZ 2109 gearbox falls slightly short of the TM indicators.
  • LukOil SAE 15W-40 is also a good competitor to specially developed oil, TM-4-12. The gap from it is only 4%.

Foreign manufacturers

We analyze the oil for the foreign-made VAZ 2109 gearbox:

  • The Castrol brand, and more specifically EP-80 and EP-90 oil, which according to the GL-4 class is undesirable for use in Samara gearboxes. Its properties are more suitable for sports gearboxes.
  • But the foreign company Valvoline, which produced DuraBlend SAE 75W-90 oil, distinguished itself with good performance for our car. This semi-synthetic oil is in second place, after the recommended domestic oil TM-4-12.
  • On the other hand, the same Valvoline, but no longer GL-4, and GL-4/5 is not suitable for high-quality operation of the VAZ 2109 gearbox.

We remember that the presence of extreme pressure additives has a positive effect on the overall performance of the gearbox. However, too much of them contributes to rapid corrosion of metals. This is because extreme pressure additives include sulfur, which corrodes gears.

  • From this point of view, motor oils are the best contenders (but we also remember about their other qualities).
  • And again, semi-synthetic Valvoline turns out to be close to the standard - TM-4-12. But synthetic, on the contrary, turns out to be the most destructive in this regard.

As for other manufacturers, it is worth paying attention to some points and studying the composition of the oil in detail. Pay attention to:

  • Viscosity
  • Oil operating temperature – pour point
  • Number of additives and their type

Changing the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ-21099 car directly affects the technical condition of the vehicle, the quality and life of parts, safety and driving comfort. promotes smooth operation of the mechanism, reduces the friction force of parts against each other and acts as a heat exchanger, preventing the gearbox from failing due to overheating.

The gearbox oil should be changed regularly.

How to fill oil into a box on a VAZ 2109?

:

  1. Kinds

  4. Dipstick Yes or not?
  5. Replacement steps

Transmission oil serves to lubricate the mechanical components of the gearbox. Due to it, the structure lasts longer, is more reliable, and friction of metal elements from each other is prevented.

Kinds

Today, various oils are used for gearboxes, each of which has its own characteristics.

Oil typePeculiarities
SyntheticThe most expensive, high-performance gear oils. They ensure reliable, long-term operation of the box. But it is not advisable to purchase them for the VAZ 2109, since this oil is more suitable for expensive imported cars or more modern domestic cars
Semi-syntheticThe optimal choice for VAZ 2109 and cheap foreign cars. This oil preserves the performance of gearbox gears and extends their service life. With a high level of quality, semi-synthetics have an attractive price for Nine owners. Change every 75 thousand kilometers
MineralThe cheapest gear oils, which are best avoided even for the VAZ 2109. To a certain extent, they perform their functions, but they cannot be recommended. If there is no alternative solution, you can use synthetics or semi-synthetics as a temporary replacement.

The main criterion for choosing gearbox oil is the class. Since the VAZ 2109 is a front-wheel drive car, it is recommended to fill the gearbox with GL3 or GL4 class lubricants. Imported oils have such designations, and foreign ones have TM3 and TM4, respectively. In this case, it is not recommended to use TM5/GL5 lubricants, since they wear out the gearbox synchronizers.

Dipstick Yes or not?

VAZ 2109 cars were produced from 1987 to 2011. During this time, certain adjustments were made to the design of the car, including gearboxes.

That’s why now nines are found both with and without a probe. Because of this, the procedure for changing the lubricant in the gearbox may differ slightly.

Earlier versions of the VAZ 2109 do not have a dipstick, but received a filler hole closed with a plug. To get to it, you have to crawl under the car. Later versions of the VAZ 2109 received a dipstick and filler hole located on top. To fill the lubricant, you just need to lift the hood.

Dipstick for lubrication in the gearbox

Replacement steps

The entire process of replacing the lubricant in the gearbox can be divided into three main stages:

  • Checking the lubricant level;
  • Draining old oil;
  • Pouring new lubricant into the box.

Let's go through each stage separately.

Level check

Checking the current oil level in the gearbox is not difficult, regardless of whether you have a dipstick or not.

If the dipstick is missing, we will check with our finger. This is done as follows:

  • Under the car, unscrew the filler plug from the gearbox;
  • If after this the liquid begins to flow out, the level is sufficient. If not, insert your finger into the hole. Having felt the liquid at the level of the edge of the filler hole, we can talk about the optimal amount of lubricant;
  • You can visually drain all the lubricant and, by its quantity in the container, determine how much liquid was in the system.

If you have a probe, everything is simple:

  • Unscrew the plug on which the measuring probe is attached;
  • Wipe it with a dry cloth;
  • Place back into box. In this case, the machine must be on a flat surface and at rest;
  • Take out the dipstick and see what the meter shows. It has Min and Max marks. It is optimal if the oil stains the dipstick up to the maximum mark, but not above it.

In order for the new lubricant in the gearbox to work effectively, the first step is to get rid of the old one. The transmission oil is drained quite easily.

Drain

To drain the lubricant from the gearbox you need:

  1. Remove the rubber plug from the breather, clean the breather with wire and close it with the plug. This will help equalize the pressure inside the gearbox.
  2. Unscrew the drain plug. In old and updated versions of the VAZ 2109, this plug is located the same way - at the bottom of the box.
  3. Drain the oil into a container of about 5 liters prepared in advance.
  4. After draining all the lubricant, screw the drain plug back securely.

When the engine is warm, the fluid from the gearbox will drain faster and more efficiently. But at the same time, follow safety precautions. After all, you are working with hot oil.

Replacement

Now we have reached the point where we need to fill in new lubricant. We have already determined which one.

  • Unscrew the filler plug located at the bottom;
  • Using a syringe, gradually fill the gearbox housing with fresh oil;
  • Add until the liquid is level with the edge of the filler hole;
  • Close the plug.

An important difference is the gearboxes on the VAZ 2109 with 5 speeds. They require approximately 300-350 milliliters more lubricant to be poured. Otherwise, when operating in 5th gear mode, the gearbox will experience oil starvation.

To add the required additional amount of lubricant to the five-speed gearbox, do the following.

  1. Use a jack to raise the rear of the car. This way the additional amount of lubricant will not spill out.
  2. While the machine is raised, add the required amount of oil.
  3. Close the plug and only then return the car to a horizontal position.

Filling through the engine compartment

Replacement via dipstick

Many people rightly believe that it is most convenient to change the oil in the box through the dipstick. The instructions for this case are as follows.

  • Raise the hood;
  • Unscrew the plug with the built-in dipstick;
  • Pour liquid into the hole through a funnel or using a syringe;
  • As you fill, check with a dipstick to see what level you have reached;
  • When you get the oil at the MAX mark, there is no need to add more lubricant;
  • Screw the dipstick into place.

Whether or not to flush the gearbox before replacing it is up to you to decide. Focus on the current state of the old grease being drained. Periodic washing will not be superfluous.

How to check the oil in the box of a VAZ 21099

VAZ 2110 How to check the oil in the box of a VAZ 21099

Replacing and adding oil in the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 gearbox with and without dipstick

Changing the oil in the gearbox on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 is not a difficult job; anyone can do it with their own hands. The first time will be longer than all the subsequent ones. Therefore, there is simply no point in going to the service for such a trifle.

The main difficulty of the whole work is to fill the gearbox with oil, since the design does not allow you to get to the opening of any container with new oil. We will talk about changing the oil with and without a dipstick, on carburetor and injection models.

But everything will be discussed in order in this article.

Many people ask: “When should you change the oil?” It all depends on the operating conditions of the car. If the car is constantly used in severe weather conditions (severe frost, heat, snow, dirt, dust, etc.), then we recommend changing the oil every 35 thousand km. In urban asphalt operating conditions, it is sufficient to replace it once every 40 thousand km.

Closer to 35-40 thousand km. mileage since the last oil change, the vehicle's transmission may not operate stably. You may feel increased vibration of the box, excess noise, and inaccuracy in gear shifting.

And if there are no problems with the clutch, then these are all signals for diagnosing and changing the oil in the gearbox on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099. Injector, carburetor, with or without a dipstick - it doesn’t matter, this applies to all models.

We recommend changing the oil in all components of a used car after purchasing it.

To change the gearbox oil with your own hands you will need:

  • New original gearbox oil. We recommend using oil recommended by the manufacturer, and also depending on the temperature conditions of the vehicle's operation (for example, 80W-85. GL-4432). Don’t forget that you will need 3.3 liters to change the oil in a five-speed gearbox, and 3 liters for a four-speed gearbox.
  • Spanners 12 and 17
  • A container for draining used oil with a volume of at least 3 liters.
  • Syringe for filling oil (for gearboxes without a dipstick), funnel (for gearboxes with a dipstick)
  • Hose or flexible tube 20-25 cm, electrical tape (for gearbox without dipstick)
  • Clean rag
  • Thin but strong wire
  • Pit, overpass or lift.

Before changing, be sure to warm up the oil by changing gears with the engine running or driving for several kilometers. It takes 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain completely from parts and mechanisms.

Let's move on to the sequence of actions. So

Changing the oil in a VAZ 2109, 21099 gearbox with a dipstick

This is what the VAZ 2109, 21099 gearbox looks like.

Step #1. Removing the cap and cleaning the hole (breather).

Remove the rubber cap, thoroughly clean it and the breather from dirt. Use wire and a rag for this.

Step #2. Draining used oil.

Using a key, unscrew the plug, place the prepared empty container, and wait until the oil is completely drained. Screw the plug back tightly.

Step #3. Adding fresh oil.

We take out the oil level dipstick.

Insert a funnel in place of the dipstick and fill in fresh oil.

That's all, as you can see, the process is simple and you can do it yourself. When filling or adding oil, be sure to use a dipstick to control the level.

In the figure we see what the minimum and maximum oil levels are.

This is what the oil level dipstick looks like in a VAZ 2109, 21099 gearbox.

Changing the oil in a VAZ 2108 gearbox without a dipstick

The design of the VAZ 2108 gearbox is slightly different, so you have to use a syringe to fill the oil. Otherwise the process is identical to that described above.

In the figure we see the location of the VAZ 2108 gearbox plugs.

We connect the flexible hose to the nozzle of the syringe and secure it with electrical tape. Using a syringe, pour oil into the gearbox. After this, tighten the plug tightly.

We advise you to check the oil level regularly (every 5 thousand km) and top up if necessary.

Make sure the car is parked on a level, level surface. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Make sure there are no oil leaks.

You need to know this when adding oil to the gearbox:

  • Add the same brand of oil that you used previously. It is forbidden to mix with others.
  • During operation, try to keep the oil level at maximum or 3-5 mm higher.
  • If the oil level is at the minimum mark or below, get ready for problems with the gearbox.

To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth and insert it back until it stops. Removing the dipstick again will show the actual oil level in the gearbox.

articles:

According to the regulations, the oil change in the VAZ 2109 gearbox must be done every 70 thousand kilometers or every 5 years of operation of the vehicle. But in Russian realities, many motorists prefer to change the oil much more often - approximately every 50 thousand kilometers. This decision certainly won’t make the car any worse.

There are two types of gearboxes on the VAZ 2109 - serviced and unserviced. The former differ from the latter in that they have a dipstick for monitoring the oil level, which makes replacing transmission fluid in such a gearbox much easier. In maintenance-free gearboxes there is no hole for the dipstick, so oil is often poured through the breather, using a syringe or through a filler plug.

What will you need if you need to change the oil in the gearbox on a VAZ 2109:

  • First of all, you need to purchase transmission fluid; 80W-85 is good for the 2109 gearbox. GL-4432.
  • Set of keys, heads.
  • Container for draining waste.
  • Funnel or funnel with a hose (if you have a gearbox without a dipstick)

Step-by-step instructions for changing gearbox oil:

  1. Before starting the draining procedure, it is strongly recommended to warm up the VAZ 2109 to 70-80 degrees - this procedure will make the oil more liquid, which will allow it to completely drain from the gearbox.
  2. Also, many car enthusiasts claim that with each oil change it is also necessary to clean the breather, well, this is not so difficult to do: remove the rubber cap from the gearbox, clean it, clean the breather and put the cap back in place.
    remove the rubber cap
  3. We drive the car into a pit, overpass or lift it on a lift.
  4. Now you should crawl under the car and place a previously prepared container under the drain plug.
  5. Carefully unscrew the drain plug so as not to get oil all over your hands.
  6. We wait for the old transmission fluid to drain, this may take some time, you have time to smoke.
    unscrew the drain plug
  7. After the glass has been completely drained, screw the drain plug back in and get out from under the car. But, if you have a so-called maintenance-free gearbox that does not have a dipstick, then you should not get out from under the car; new transmission fluid can be poured into the filler hole, which is located next to the drain hole, so as not to confuse it, see the picture:
    You can fill the oil into the filler hole

    You can only pour oil into such a gearbox using a special syringe or a homemade bulb.

    special syringe

  8. Now we remove the dipstick to determine the oil level, and insert a funnel into this hole into which we pour new transmission fluid.
    fill in new transmission fluid
  9. When pouring oil, you should monitor its level using a dipstick. The level should be located between the maximum and minimum marks.

That's all, changing the oil in the gearbox on a VAZ 2109 is complete. After the replacement, you will probably notice that the gears will change much smoother and the box itself will make much less noise.

Do not forget to change the transmission fluid in the gearbox on time and it will serve you faithfully for many years.
