When liquid begins to flow out of the filler hole through the top, this means that the required level has been reached. We tighten the plug, also without applying excessive force. We check for the presence or absence of leaks, first of all from the drain hole. If necessary, tighten the plug.

After completing the procedure, we check the used oil for the presence of metal shavings, crumbs and microparticles. If any, this indicates the need for transmission repair. We visually inspect the housing for cracks and leaks; if they are present, it is necessary to eliminate the detected defects.

If the waste is black in color, indicating that it is heavily contaminated, it is advisable to flush the gearbox housing before changing the oil in a manual transmission in a VAZ model 2106. For this procedure, you will need to mix 0.7 liters of transmission fluid and 0.3 liters of diesel fuel (you can use a ready-made flushing mixture sold in auto chemical departments). We pour the resulting liquid into the box, jack up one of the drive wheels, start the engine, and let the engine run in one of the forward gears for several minutes. Drain the flushing fluid and fill in new one.

To indicate the viscosity of all-season motor oils according to the SAE classification, an index consisting of numbers and letters is used. Examples of such markings are 5W-40, 0W-30, 10W-50, etc. The first part of the marking indicates viscosity values at low temperatures. Essentially, this indicator indicates at what minimum temperature threshold the lubricant will remain fluid enough for the oil pump to “push” it through the system. The second part of the marking indicates viscosity at high temperatures. Here the opposite is true: the higher the number, the higher the viscosity after heating.

To select the viscosity of engine oil for the winter for a VAZ-2114 or any other model, you just need to determine the temperature in different seasons. So, for northern latitudes, you should first of all be guided by low-temperature viscosity, that is, by the first part of the SAE index. If in winter the temperature drops to -30 degrees. For latitudes with a temperate climate, winter oil for the VAZ-2106 (in general, it does not matter which model) you will have to find a compromise so that the lubricant remains liquid in winter and viscous in summer. The optimal oil for such a climate is an oil with an index of 5W-40.

Depending on the prevailing temperatures in the area where the car is used, you should select the degree of viscosity of the material:

SAE75W85 - has an operating temperature range from - 40 to + 45 degrees C;
SAE80W85 - from - 30 to + 35 g;
SAE75W90 - from - 40 to + 35 gr.

These are the most acceptable viscosity characteristics, which are optimal for good operation of the unit in different climates, both for summer and winter. The viscosity designation is always indicated on the packaging and quality certificate. You should not use the cheapest and low-quality lubricants to lubricate the transmission, as this will worsen the gear shifting process in winter and can lead to increased wear of the gearbox.

Difference between 4-speed and 5-speed gearboxes

Since the 4-speed version was the basis for creating the 5-speed gearbox, it is quite possible to upgrade the 4-speed gearbox yourself at home, for which you should replace and add the specified gearbox components.

In general, the KPP-2105 is very reliable and can operate for a long time without any maintenance. In addition, it has good maintainability and repairs are not so difficult. Replacing the 2105 gearbox is usually done in case of wear of the bearing seats in the housing or if it is damaged - breakdown, cracks.

In case of other breakdowns (wear or damage to gears, bearings, shafts, etc.), it is possible to restore the functionality of the unit by replacing broken elements. Replacement can also be carried out in the case of installing a 5-speed modification instead of a 4-speed one, in the case when the unit was purchased assembled, and not just those elements that allow you to modernize the old gearbox.

But in any case, whether it’s a replacement, modernization or repair, nothing can be done while the gearbox is installed on the car. In any case, the unit will have to be dismantled, and you need to know how to remove the box.
