Currently, AvtoVAZ OJSC manufactures drive axle gearboxes for the following models for production vehicles and supplies them for retail sale:
  • VAZ 2101 (gear ratio 4.3),
  • VAZ 2103 (gear ratio 4.1),
  • VAZ 2106 (gear ratio 3.9).

The gear ratio is the result of dividing the number of wheel teeth by the number of gear teeth. You don't need to count the teeth at all. On the driven gear you can read all the necessary information.

For example, the marking “VAZ 2106 1143 4537” should be interpreted as follows:

  • “VAZ 2106” - gearbox model;
  • “1143” - 11 teeth on the gear, 43 teeth on the wheel;
  • “4537” is the number of the main gear set.

Therefore, the gear ratio of this gearbox is: 4311=3.9. As you can see, the manufacturer of the gearboxes introduced the name of the car model “VAZ 21**” into their markings. This fact often misleads the consumer. So, for example, owners of VAZ 04, 05 and 07 models, out of ignorance, are looking for a gearbox from a “four”, “five” or “seven”, and owners of VAZ 21063 cars (engine capacity 1300 cc) “safely” install a “sixth” » gearbox with gear ratio 3.9. And then they wonder why the car has become “stupid”: the acceleration dynamics have sharply decreased, and despite the fact that a high-speed gearbox is installed, it cannot be accelerated to a speed of more than 120 km/h.

Meanwhile, the marking “VAZ 21**” does not mean at all that this particular gearbox is intended for this car, for example: gearbox 2101 is for a VAZ 2101 car, and gearbox 2103 is for a VAZ 2103 car, etc. The overall and mounting dimensions of all gearbox models are the same. In other words, all gearboxes of VAZ cars are structurally interchangeable. But it is necessary to take into account a number of significant limitations associated with a specific gearbox and vehicle model. Let's take a closer look at these restrictions.

Description of design

The rear axle of the car is made in the form of a hollow beam, to the ends of which flanges with seats for axle shaft bearings and holes for attaching brake shields are welded. In the middle, a main gear reducer with a differential is bolted to the beam, and on the flange side, two axle shafts are inserted into the beam, transmitting torque from the gearbox to the rear wheels. The rear axle of all “classic” VAZ cars (except all-wheel drive models) is unified and, depending on the model, can be equipped with a gearbox with a gear ratio of 3.9 or 4.1.

The drive and driven gears of the gearbox are selected in pairs and if at least one of them is damaged, they are replaced as a set. The drive gear is mounted on two tapered roller bearings, and an elastic spacer sleeve is inserted between their inner rings. When the nut on the pinion shank is tightened, this bushing is deformed, providing preload to the bearings. An adjusting ring is installed between the drive gear and its bearing, which determines the axial position of the drive gear. The final drive gear is bolted to the differential housing, which is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The preload in these bearings, as well as the amount of clearance between the teeth of the drive and driven gears, are adjusted by ring nuts screwed into split bearing beds. Inside the differential housing, two satellite gears sit freely on the axle and mesh with the semi-axial gears. The axle shaft with its inner end enters the splined hole of the semi-axial gear, and with its outer end it rests on a ball bearing, which fits into the flange of the beam and is locked there by a plate. The plate, together with the oil deflector and the brake shield, is secured with four bolts to the beam flange. A cuff is installed in the bridge beam socket. Principle of operation

On a VAZ-2107, the axle gearbox operates in the same way as on all other cars with a classic drive layout. Why classic? The answer is simple: the first cars that were produced earlier had a longitudinal engine. Thus, first came the engine, then came the gearbox, driveshaft, and the final element in the chain was the rear gearbox. VAZ-2107 is built on the same principle. But the next model 2108 has a more modern front-wheel drive layout with a transversely mounted engine. It is believed that this design is safer in terms of getting the car out of a skid. But in this case, all the nodes are concentrated in one place (that is, in the engine compartment). In the case of the “seven”, all elements are placed evenly throughout the body. So, how does the VAZ-2107 gearbox work?

Defects in the gearbox

Increased REM play can occur due to wear on the differential planetary gear pin: if you take the driveshaft and turn it clockwise and counterclockwise, this play can be felt. Also, increased play can occur due to wear of the grooves inside the differential seat.

If you do not adjust the gaps in the main pair of gearboxes, a characteristic noise occurs when the car moves:

  • when the load increases (a sharp increase in speed), a characteristic howl is heard in the bridge;
  • When the gas is released the noise disappears.

The ZM can hum in different ways, but the feature described above can often be heard on classic VAZ cars. Worn teeth of the main pair are clearly visible on the planetary gear: they become rounded and often show traces of rust.

Oil

It is worth noting that the VAZ-2107 gearbox, or rather its operating principle, is based on the meshing of gears. Accordingly, with constant rotation there will be significant production. To increase the service life, special oil is poured inside the gearbox. It forms a thin film behind the teeth. On the “seven” you can use thick gear oil. It is perfect not only for the gearbox, but also for the rear axle. We also note that the lubricant has a certain service life. Experts recommend changing this fluid at least once every thirty thousand kilometers.

Some service issues

If there are no design differences in terms of the internal structure, they are encountered when servicing the rear axle gearbox. First of all, this is dismantling. There are no special problems with rear-wheel drive cars from Tolyatti. But with the Gazelle of early releases they appear: the entire rear axle was non-separable, forming a single unit with the gearbox. Although it gained in reliability, it nevertheless lost in service. There are no difficulties with vehicles produced in recent years.

Many car enthusiasts are interested in the question of whether it is possible to install gearboxes designed for cars of other brands on their cars. The answer from experts is usually clear: if you have never had to do this, then it’s better not to start. The fact is that the parameters of the rear axle unit are directly related to the characteristics of the engine and the design of the gearbox. If the “internals” of the VAZ-2107 and VAZ-2106 are identical, and there is no difference in such replacements, then with the Gazelle the situation is somewhat different.

It is possible to install a similar unit from the “related” Sobol on the Gazelle, and due to this the car will receive a certain “agility”, but the wear period will be reduced.

Having certain skills in servicing passenger cars, an experienced car enthusiast will be able to diagnose and repair the rear axle gearbox of the “classic” Volzhsky Automobile Plant without any problems. But with Gazelle it’s already more difficult. It is better to entrust all necessary manipulations to an experienced car mechanic. This is also associated with such a problem as removing the filler plug of the rear axle. Without special devices, even such a small thing turns into an impossible task.

Device diagnostics and maintenance

It is best to entrust the maintenance of any car to service specialists also because transmission oils, no matter what markings they have, are still quite liquid in consistency. If there are any problems with the rear axle gearbox, then it is also necessary to replace the gaskets and seals, check the breather, bearings, and so on. No one can do this better than a specialist.

Teeth Features

Just like a gearbox, it uses a pair of gears. The VAZ-2107 steering gear is no exception. On the “seven”, the driven and driving gears are located at an angle (that is, not straight, but helical). The main feature of the pair is less load on the teeth, smooth and quiet operation. The rear axle of the “six” and other classic VAZ models is designed using the same principle.

  • Cylindrical.
  • Conical.
  • Worm-shaped.

If we talk about the VAZ-2107 steering gear, then the operating principle here is based on a worm pair. As for the gearboxes themselves, they also include a hypoid gear. Here the gears, unlike bevel gears, do not lie in the same plane.

Signs of a gearbox malfunction

Many REM malfunctions can be diagnosed by the changed sound of the operating machine and the appearance of extraneous noise. If knocking, crunching and other noises are heard from the gearbox when moving, this indicates a malfunction or failure of any part of the unit. If extraneous noise appears in the rear axle, you should pay attention to the oil level in the gearbox and check how correctly the RZM is adjusted (especially if it has been repaired or newly installed).

Crunching sound when moving

If you hear a crunching sound from the gearbox while the car is moving, you should immediately take measures to prevent even greater malfunctions. The appearance of grinding and crunching sounds indicates that bearings or gears will most likely have to be replaced. If the bearings have not yet failed, but are already heavily worn out and do not rotate well, a hum will be heard from the REM side, which is not present when the unit is working properly. Most often, the reasons for the appearance of crackling and humming sounds from the gearbox while the car is moving are:

  • unacceptable wear or complete destruction of gears or bearings of the main drive;
  • unadjusted gear engagement;
  • broken hole for the pinion axle in the differential box;
  • low oil level in the gearbox.

Wheel jammed

The reason that one of the rear wheels of the car is jammed may also be a faulty REM. If the driver ignored the appearance of extraneous noise that was caused by the failure of the differential bearings, this may result in deformation of the axle shafts and jamming of the wheels.

Adjusting the rear gearbox of the VAZ-2107

It is possible to change the gear ratio of the mechanism only if you completely replace the main gear and install another one, with a different ratio. This modification can increase the torque of the car. The higher the gear ratio, the more traction. However, this parameter significantly affects the speed. If you increase the torque, it will be more difficult for the car to accelerate in the range of one hundred kilometers per hour or more. But from the start it will move much faster.

Higher or lower?

Often, owners of classic Zhiguli cars use replacing the main pair as one of the types of tuning their cars. Which gearbox should I put on the VAZ-2107? It is worth choosing the gear ratio based on the engine power. If you install a pair with a low ratio (for Zhiguli the maximum parameter is 3.9), it will be easier for the car to accelerate to maximum speed. But in the range of 0-100 kilometers per hour, it will lose significant time for acceleration.

Which gearbox should I choose, 2103 or 2106?

In the “nature” of Zhiguli gearboxes there are 4 types:

  • VAZ 2101 - gear ratio 4.3
  • VAZ 2102 - 4.4
  • VAZ 2103 “troika” - 4.1
  • VAZ 2106 “six” - 3.9.

The gear ratio is the ratio of the teeth, for example, in a “six” gearbox the large gear is marked 2106 1143. Therefore, to determine the pair, 43/11 = 3.9 is necessary. The larger the number of the pair, the more high-torque the car will be, but it will lose maximum speed. Most often, you can find two types of gearboxes in stores: with a pair of 4.3 and 3.9.

Please note: when replacing a faulty gearbox with a gearbox with a different gear ratio, it will be necessary, otherwise the speed readings on the speedometer will be incorrect.

  • We hang up the rear axle, drain the oil from the crankcase, remove the wheels and brake drums, and remove the axle shafts. We disconnect the driveshaft from the drive gear flange and move it to the side.
  • Using a “13” wrench, unscrew the eight bolts securing the gearbox housing to the rear axle beam.
  • Remove the gearbox assembly.
  • We install the new gearbox in the reverse order of removal. Apply sealant to the threaded part of the crankcase mounting bolts. After installation, do not forget to fill the rear axle housing with 75W-90 transmission oil. Crankcase volume is 1.3 liters.

How much does a new gearbox and replacement labor cost?

The cost of the work, as always, depends on where you decide to have the repairs done. If it’s a garage-type service, then Uncle Vasya will ask you for about 1,000 rubles to replace the gearbox, but in a “sophisticated” car service center, be prepared to part with an amount of 2 to 3 thousand.

Prices for spare parts. The kit, which includes a new rear axle gearbox 2106 (Togliatti), gasket and even oil, costs about 5-6 thousand rubles (Moscow and Moscow region, AvtoPasker store).

The price for gearbox 2103 (AvtoVAZ) is not much different from 06 and is about 5,000 rubles.

Using a gearbox, torque is transmitted from the engine to the wheels. The gearbox is a set of gears and includes two main blocks: a cross-axle differential and a main gear. When replacing or repairing this module, the question may arise as to how the VAZ 2103 gearbox differs from the 2106, which do not look identical in appearance.

In addition, the main transfer can be performed in other ways. For this purpose, transmissions are installed:

However, in most cases, it is the first type that is used, since its efficiency is maximum and its cost is relatively low.

What is the difference between the VAZ 2103 gearbox and 2106?

The main difference is the different gear ratio:

The gear ratio shows how many times the wheel will turn relative to the number of revolutions of the cardan. The difference between the VAZ 2103 gearbox and the 2106 can be clearly seen by the number of teeth on the gears. The “six” has 11 teeth on the drive gear, and 43 teeth on the driven gear, while the “three” has 10 and 41, respectively. To verify this, it is not necessary to disassemble the gearbox, just look at its markings.

Many motorists believe that a gearbox with a higher gear ratio is considered traction, and one with a low gear is considered high-speed, and they try to replace one type of gearbox with another, adjusting the car to the desired parameters. But to fully modernize a car, it is not enough just to know how the VAZ 2103 gearbox differs from the 2106.

Features of using gearboxes on all-wheel drive vehicles

For all-wheel drive vehicles, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same.

In everyday practice of car maintenance, quite often there are cases of installing gearboxes with different gear ratios on an all-wheel drive vehicle (Niva, Taiga). Most often this happens due to the lack of appropriate knowledge among those people who repair the car. These can be both car owners who repair the car themselves, and unskilled car service workers who provide services to the population to replace units.

When installing a gearbox with a gear ratio different from the required one on an all-wheel drive vehicle, the owner will not notice any disturbances in the operation of the transmission. The car will drive normally until the owner tries to engage the center differential lock. The fact is that this differential “works out” the difference in gear ratios of the gearboxes while driving.

A simple, but quite dangerous for transmission units, method of checking for differences in gear ratios in gearboxes is as follows:

  1. Place the vehicle on a dry, level road with a slight slope to move forward.
  2. Check the vehicle's ability to roll freely downhill when releasing the brakes in neutral. The slope should be small, but sufficient for the car to move on its own.
  3. Engage the center differential lock (transfer case) and allow the vehicle to roll downhill.

If the car rolls as freely as in the test according to point No. 2, the gear ratios are the same. If, with the center differential locked, the car is unable to roll in neutral, the gear ratios are different.
